We truly enjoyed our visit. We brought my mother-in-law visiting from out of the country and she thought it was one of the coolest stores on her travels. We felt it was such an authentic experience walking through the store and the staff was so great, working with us to find the right hat and fit, even for a family member not there. One of the staff members hand-stitches her own designs into some of the hats or you can request something and she will try to come up with something for you. Visited this hat store after being recommended here to find a specific Stetson. Didn't find the hat, or even any recommendations or a sales experience to find another one - all we got was very unwelcome vibes and behavior from two of the staff who seemed to judge us on how we were dressed, or the non English language we were speaking within our group. Do NOT shop here! This establishment is a run by awful folks. I'm a LOCAL and a Reality TV Celebrity, and i stopped here this afternoon to purchase a hat as a gift. Let me just say, these hats are way over priced for their quality, and they take advantage of you because you're in a tourist area. I walked in, i showed the gentleman the hats i was looking at based off their website, they were so cheap made - you could buy these hats for much less at your local Target or Outlet Stores. After i picked one, i told him it was a gift for a birthday and asked if he had any boxes for it, he said "Yes, I'll find one for you". As i got to the register, he tried to charge me $10 more, i told him and showed him the website and said it shows $79.00, he asked the "owner" a heavy set middle age woman with a bad attitude and she agreed but tried to make a stink about it "oh i haven't changed the prices we have been so busy"...ok that's not my problem that's yours. So he rung me up, and then asked the owner if we had a box, the again middle age over weight rude woman stated she doesn't have a box for the hat it doesn't come with box, i could take a bag with their company branded logo on it (remember this was a birthday gift, not very classy) and i stated i understood but he said i could get a box, i wouldn't have bought it if i couldn't get a box. She again with attitude and rolling her eyes she doesn't have one for THAT hat. Okay we'll find a box for a different hat, geez! Don't shop here, they'll treat you like car salesmen, they appear as greedy white trumpers, and the older woman omg wears so much makeup she looks like a clown. Luckily i was able to call my credit card company and stop payment on the purchase! Do NoT shop here, and if you do... make sure to check your items, make sure you get what you asked for before they ring you up. Horrible business practice! So I finally got to Paris Hatters. I had always wanted a cowboy hat, a Stetson, but living in Southern California there was not much cause or opportunity do get one. I, like many, discovered Paris Hatters on the Antique Archaeology show. And while visiting the lovely city of San Antonia, a town of great history of which Paris Hatters is part of, I had to go. Entering the store is a step back in time. It is something of a retail museum with old school display cases, and product and photos and memorabilia displaying the history of the place everywhere. Salesman Gary was very approachable and informative. He explained the varying degrees of quality and steered me, (pardon the expression) , toward a mid-range Stetson, black of course, and after a brief rummage about the stock room he even was able to find a size that accommodated my rather large, size 8 head. And I got to meet the owner Abe, a very approachable fellow, who despite the rumors is not as old as the antique cash register he rang me up on. Gary then deftly steamed and shaped my purchase to a perfect look while I watched. All in all a great experience that I am still talking about. Now I see the reviews where people complain about the no touch the hats policy, or try to run a herd of unkempt youngins through the establishment, and it is clear to me that they simply do not understand or respect the place. Ask yourself why they would want your Dorito stained fingers handling the pristine hats? Or your hair gel, cologne or perfume damaging the product? Why would they want your heathen kids running about and disrespecting the merchandise? Where do these people think they are? A FootLocker? Paris Hatters is simply iconic. A living museum of western wear that still manages to stay relevant in the 21st century. This is a place where small talk is still encouraged and customer service lives. To buy a hat here is to take part in a time honored ritual that so many have experienced before you. And damn I look good. I went to college in Texas and always regretted not picking up a Stetson when I was in Texas. I had the opportunity to go back recently and could not miss out on a second chance. I went to the hat shop as soon as they opened and picked out a felt hat that would do okay in the PNW rain. They shaped it and trimmed it down for me and I absolutely love it! The Response to the Manager - Your response is very illuminating. Your defensive stance demonstrates a lack of empathy for your potential customers. Instead of trying to see the situation from my point of view you immediately decide to respond testily. I am disappointed. Here are my counterpoints: 1) I do not recall anywhere in the store a sign that says purchasing will take one hour or longer so don't bother coming in an hour before closing. 2) The employee did not offer to help. The employee asked if I had any questions after I said I wanted to buy a hat. I do not know what I do not know. Follow up questions would have been nice, a suggestion, or even being pointed out a section to consider would be helpful. 3) I failed to state this in my original review. I was the only customer inside the store. There were two employees. One was playing a game on her tablet. The other was on her phone - not talking, but commenting on social media posts. On that particular day your store was not short staffed. 4) Incorrect assumption on my reviews and how I rate businesses. Out of 27 San Antonio businesses that I reviewed 23 of them received stellar star ratings of 4 or more stars. The 4 that didn't had nothing to do with wait times. Multiple factors go into why a store or restaurant receives the rating they do. In your store's case it was - the lack of interaction - the lack of recommendations - the lack of follow up questions - playing games on the sales floor in line of sight of customers (unprofessional, at least go behind a desk to do that) - playing with her cell phone on the sales floor - both were sitting on stools not doing anything work related so one would think one of them could have interacted with me, asked questions, tried to make a sale or even did exactly what you said in the beginning - "You need more than an hour to buy a hat, why don't you come back on another day and we can help you?" Perhaps it was simply an off day. People have them. I am willing to consider that. But I will never know because I have no intention of coming back. No loss to you, manager, but please don't respond in another four months. Your energy can be focused elsewhere like encouraging employees not to play tablet games in line of sight of customers. read more

Funny I grew up in San Antonio but never knew about this hat store. It is on the street level and a hidden gem. I found about this place from watching a tv show and had to visit this shop. From the outside it looks very old with 1950s signage. As you walk in the place is definitely old school and greeted by a nice salesman. They are a little pushy but know their cowboy hats. I think their main customers are tourist who want to dress up as cowboys. However they do sell very expensive hats. They educated me all about hat qualities and what the numbers mean. I was not interested in getting one today but do need a black cowboy hat. I probably come back later with time allocated to decide on one and shape. They do sell cowboy boots too. read more

My husband and I just visited Paris Hatters. We had been looking forward to visiting this family business, as we live in SA and have never been. We decided we would walk from our home in King William. Upon entry we were greeted warmly. Although the saleswoman remained seated. We let them know what style we were looking for and that we had ordered one similar from Stetson on-line and that we had found it fit oddly. We were hoping a hat shop like theirs would be a better place to find what we were looking for. When we inquired about the style we were told they had little inventory. It was a felt hat style, and I understand it IS summer. We asked if they had ANY inventory in this particular style, hoping to get a feel for the style or try some on. The saleswoman rudely said, "just those" and pointed dismissively to a small section on the wall directly behind me - as if I should have KNOWN where the hats I was asking about were located. This was our first time in. She proceeded to say that they would be "much too small for my husband". As if she could tell his hat size from looking at him. One of the hats was a 7-1/2 and my husband wears a 7-1/4. She proceeded to tell us she was there to make money and would sell us a hat if she had one. All the while not bothering to get out of her chair. I run a family a business with my father and he would have been mortified if I treated a customer the way this young lady treated us. My husband and I have many hats, custom made and name brand and each shop we have visited across many states has been warm and welcoming, helpful and knowledgable. This is my favorite hat in my collection - in large measure, becuase of my experience... I will be back! PS - I went back to the store this afternoon becuase I got an ink-stain on the brim. This store was established around 1917 and it treats Latinos like we are still in 1917. The employees there, at least the 2 females I had the unfortunate experience with, claim to be Mexican American. However, their behavior towards us make me wonder if they're ashamed of it. The service at this store is extremely horrible. It's unfortunate that the ladies at this establishment make every attempt to give credence to the term 'dirty Mexican'. I recommend that anyone who wants a hat to just order it online. You may not get to try on your online order, but at least you won't be made to feel like a criminal. I'm going tell a little story. Unbelievable as it may be, this is the God's honest truth - no embellishing, no exaggerating. I have friend from Albuquerque who asks me for my hat size so he can buy me baseball cap. I have no idea. But later in the conversation, he mentions Paris Hats and I HAVE to go there and all that. So I decide to accomplish both things by going to Paris Hats for the first time. I go in. There are two ladies, one older one younger sitting in chairs. I explain I have a really good friend who lives in Albuquerque and asked for my hat size and said that I really need to check out your store. I was hoping you could measure me for my hat size. The older lady (probably the mother) says "we don't do that here. Everything is custom made and two hats that might be the same size are different numbers or something like that. And we can only measure you if you are going to but a hat." So I say, "So wait, you won't measure me?" The older lady says, "No!". Then the younger one goes into this whole diatribe about sizing hats for 5 minutes and at the end, she says, "If you go on our website, there is a video where you use a string...". So I'm thinking, "Great! Very nice". I said, "That's great. Thank you." And I turn to the older woman and say, "You know, I'm from Rochester NY where people are NICE. I'm really not used to this. How hard would it have been to tell me to go to the website and you can learn there". And with that, both women start screaming at me and throw me out. Guess they didn't like being told the older lady wasn't being nice. And you know, the younger me might have questioned whether any of this was my fault. But at this point in life, at 66, I'm confident in who I am and the kind of person I am. They lose. Jerks. Edit and update: I'm not even going to comment on their reply to me. But know what's so funny? My friend from Albuquerque who's visiting me in a month was going to forget the baseball cap (as a gift for staying with us) and just told me he was planning to buy me a real cowboy hat from this place where he purchased his favorite hat 10 years earlier. They didn't stock that particular hat but offered to start with a blank one and customize it just for me. I of course jumped at the chance. My head is big (LOL) and I am extremely selective about the quality, look and feel of my hats and they did not disappoint! The young gentleman in the photo was really patient and though young he has been blocking hats since he was a teen. He even hand-stitched a grosgrain ribbon on! I first wanted to say I NEVER write bad reviews. As a business owner I post good experiences but this needs to be said. I came in with my family to buy a hat, and was working with a very knowledgeable sales associate. When he wasn't available any longer I walked to the other side of the shop where a women immediately walked over asked me to not touch the hats and to tell my kids not touch anything (which they were being good for once). I asked to see a fedora and the same lady told me I'm sure you know that's $135 dollars. Not sure, why this needed to be addressed as I was looking at $500 plus dollar products. Not only did she make that rude comment, but she asked to switch us with a different sales associate, because she seemed annoyed with us . At that that point we just walked out. If your looking for a good experience buying a hat I would recommend asked for one of the guys. The women lost them a sale and a customer. I'll buy my hats elsewhere. So disappointed! We live in Houston and drive the few hours to buy our hats here. Last trip was a great success when the old man (owner I believe) helped my wife out. He found the perfect hat and fit and the other gentleman shaped and steamed it to perfection. Well some time has past and we made the trip again to buy another hat and to have another steamed and a small adjustment. The original guy was there and eager to help us but the old lady ( I'm assuming the owner) was very rude . She was very short with everyone inside the store. She definitely looks stressed out. It takes a lot to get my wife upset and she had her biting her tongue from giving her a piece of mind. After snapping at us for touching a not so expensive straw hat, the very aragonite sales lady who acted like we interrupted her day, sat down and enjoyed a diet soda. My beautiful girlfriend and I came across this hat shop on a whim and we were absolutely blown away!! The owners here were kind and patient as they went out of their way to help us get fitted with hats for our stay in Texas. They were even nice enough to help us ship our hats back home in California for a very fair price. The fact that they have pictures on the walls showing history they have and the business they've provided throughout the years made the experience feel extra special to us. Very rude staff and unwilling to help. I was told I couldn't look at a hat because "it probably wasn't in my price range". That was my first interaction with the lady. She had no basis to make that statement. She literally looked at me and said "what do you need" very bluntly. When I asked if I could look at a hat (because EVERY hat has a sign that says "don't touch the hats") she basically told me I couldn't afford it and should look on the other side of the store at the Stetsons because they are *more in my price range* Then as she walked around behind the counter to take me to the stersons she made a comment to her co-workers about **musician types coming in to look hipster**...... Bought a Stetson black wIth a Texas star hat band. Alex took care of me wonderfully. I wore it that evening for drinks with co-workers that evening, plenty of fun reactions. As I got back to my room it seemed like it was tight or sore on my forehead. I called the next day and they said come in we'll take care of it. Tried the next size up definitely too large so I explained where I was sore. They steamed and stretched the front and there you go turns out my head is oval shaped, who knew. Today I bought a 10x black Stetson cowboy hat from Abe. He sized me up as I walked in the door. Size and style to fit me saved a lot of time wondering thru a store with so many Good lookin hats! I was asked 3 times by 3 different people how the hat felt on my head we decided to go one size bigger and it was the right choice feels great. I didn't catch the name of the man blocking hats but I felt very comfortable talking to such friendly people and smart too Alex is a Tech Grad! Wreck Em!
