This past Sunday, I caught a screening of Kid Koala's Space Cadet at the IFC Center. It was the East Coast premiere of the animated film during NYICFF. I always enjoy going to the IFC Center to watch movies, but this was the first time I went there during a film festival. It was a cool experience to watch the movie, and also vote on the feature and short film shown beforehand. IFC consistently has interesting and diverse programming and collaborations for people who love movies and movie-making. read more

There was an apparent cultural clash at today's Veteran's Day screening of "E.T." When a guy yelled "sit down!" and subsequently "turn the light off and sit down!" I reckon he was more from the "you didn't even know that the Angenieux lens in Jaws was an homage to George Melies?!" camp, and didn't welcome the 8-year-olds who had a day off from school. Or maybe it was his own kid, which is awful in a different way. But a 10:55 movie starting at 10:55 can be a shocker in today's AMC-ized world. You can't blame IFC for that, but they need better internal consistency on starting times. On the plus side, where they have been hiding Theater 3? I usually wind up in the broom closet-type screens but this was a good one, with beautiful sound for the John Williams score. As many conspire against the theatrical film business including the industry itself, I appreciate IFC's well-chosen stash of oldies and its quirkier newer offerings like Secret Mall Apartment. And I'm also on Team Unassigned Seats. read more

I'm surprised I never updated my review for this theater and since the previous review is one of my bad ones back from 2015, I might as well post this. There's a few issues here and a few fantastic things and I think the easiest way is to list them by category. The Bad: -Like others, I agree that the seats unfortunately are not that comfortable here. This is by far the biggest issue here and it should have been addressed years ago and I doubt it will be soon -They still show the same extremely annoying metal band shirt advertisement with flashing lights that is annoying every single time I go here -The staff here aren't the nicest but it's a movie theater so I can deal with it The Good: -If you're looking for independent films and foreign films, this is one of if not the best theater to go to -The occasional Q&A I'm able to go to such as most recently for Eephus; which was an excellent existential baseball movie; and the Ukrainian documentary Porcelain War last year are always entertaining and interesting and they don't cost more so I would recommend them -If you're looking to see some form films to fill out your Letterboxd Oscar list or perhaps the shorts or something, they show virtually all of them here -They have some fun midnight screenings and other things such as the obligatory The Room and Rocky Horror Picture Show of course There's a few other theaters that I like going to more but there's occasionally films that you really can't find anywhere else. Combine that with the fact that this place is so convenient that I deal with any of the issues here. If they fix the seats, you can preemptively switch this to five stars but for now, it's a four. read more

I'm a fan of a documentary or indie movie. I'm a member of a chain spot so it's been some time since I've been here. So why was I here after a long hiatus? LUTHER VANDROSS!!! Amazing DOC!!! The seats were spacious and the rows were spacious. This place has a no frills but clean vibe. I'm not use to paying for a ticket...why is it so expensive?! LOL! It was definitely worth it to see Luther. I will definitely go back for another great doc. read more

I attend this art-house theatre, IFC in NYC, every so often, for years I have. But I have to complain, come summer season the air conditioning is often so uncomfortably cold. It's felt even more so in the smaller auditoriums. Tonight (6/04) I asked if they could make the a.c. less cold in that auditorium. At the time I was the only one in there. Shortly after 4 other people came in. A woman, as she went to her seat, said to her friend how cold it was in there. So it wasn't just me. The usher I had asked mentioned it the the manager, (the older bald man​) who did nothing about it. The whole time we were so uncomfortable in that room. In past summers I've had the same experience, the a.c. on so uncomfortably cold, and when it's not really so hot outdoors. We shouldn't be paying to see a movie and not be able to enjoy ourselves, feeling cold the whole time. They should adjust it some if we ask and not ignore us. That is no way ti have a good movie and theatre experience! I won't be attending and spending my money there at IFC during this summer season again. There are other art-house theatres to enjoy. I never complain but this theatre group is already at an disadvantage because the conditions of the theatre are not the nicest I attended a showing today and the temperature for some odd reason was set to cold I complained to the box office staff and returned to the show still no change ! So because I was so uncomfortable to the point I was getting a headache from being cold, I then left and went back to the box office to ask for a refund or rain check they said they don't offer that for shows that have already started which tells me they don't care about guest services or customer loyalty, so no I will not go back there again I'll go to Angelika or film forum! read more

One thing I miss about New York is the abundance of theaters that offer indie movies. We had a decent independent theater near our new home in Florida, but it closed down unfortunately, never recovering from the economic damage of the Covid pandemic. Anyway, the IFC Center in New York stands out as a cinematic haven for movie enthusiasts seeking an eclectic mix of indie and international films. Boasting a diverse, well curated selection, the programming at IFC Center showcases an amazing assortment of movies that you just can't find anywhere else. I always make it a point to check out the showtimes when I'm in town and when I do catch a movie here, it always hits the spot. Beyond its remarkable film selection, the IFC Center offers a cozy and intimate atmosphere that really takes me back. While I do prefer the luxury recliners and waiter service you can now get in many mainstream theaters, old school theaters like IFC really do have an unmistakable charm. I adored this arthouse cinema! We don't really have many where I live, so I was thrilled to see all the options in NYC. I appreciated their merch as well as their tiny movie poster exhibit. The atmosphere and vibe are amazing. The bathrooms can be found in the basement. There are quite a few movies that play here. The theater room I went in, although smaller, had a great screen. The seats were comfy and a bit retro. I'd highly recommend visiting The IFC Center to all cinephiles and movie lovers. They rotate through a lot of great films. read more

I love movies, and over the past few years I have found myself seeking out classic and new films to gain new perspectives and experiences. I am particularly fond of independent films, which was only augmented by COVID lockdown where the majority of my time outside of work was spent watching them. A place like IFC Center really speaks to me, since they intentionally show independent, arthouse, and limited release films - but I had never been here prior to the other night since there are other arthouse theaters closer to me. My brother and I really wanted to see the new film Memoria, and the only theater that was playing it in NY was IFC Center - so I took this as an opportunity to check out the theater while seeing this very limited release film. Formerly called the Waverly Theater, IFC Center is located on 6th Ave in Greenwich Village - close to the B and D trains and right by NYU. I can tell the theater has been around for a while - it was well kept but had an older look and feel to it. As of the time of this review, they have temporarily stopped selling concessions and require you to be masked at all times while in the theater - proof of vaccination is also required. We were seated in theater 1, which was right in front of us beyond the box office. It was a decent sized theater - the seated weren't tiered but the screen was somewhat higher than normal so there was no obstruction of the screen by the people in front of you. The seats were fine - they auto-reclined via spring action with slight pressure, but they were slightly tighter than what I've experienced in other theaters. I'm blaming it on the age of the theater, rather than the potential/definite holiday weight I gained ;-) Staff was friendly, and overall I had a great first experience at IFC Center. They provided a comfortable environment to view a film, and followed all protocols to make sure we stayed safe and healthy. While it's not in my backyard, I would definitely return for an independent or limited release. read more

Excellent cinema in Greenwich Village. They screen a variety of independent films, arthouse cinema, retrospectives, international releases, and a slew of one-offs, rarities, limited runs, etc. The reels are always in rotation; what's showing this week may not be back next week. Offering a saner and more humane alternative to the big chain AMC and Regal theaters, IFC dispenses with tacky gimmicks nauseating advertisements. Refreshments are surprisingly affordable. Like, it's cheaper to get an adult beverage here than at many of the bars in the area. The screens are a good size and the sound systems are booming. The membership options are appealing and priced attractively. I also like that the theater is clean and has nice bathrooms. If you're at all interested in film, the IFC Center is a treasure. read more

My wife visited recently with our daughter and some friends to attend a showing of It's A Wonderful Life. Experiencing the film on the big screen a few days before Christmas was very much wonderful, especially for my daughter's friend who is originally from Australia and who had never seen the movie. Then, while all in the audience were still absorbing the touching and emotional ending, the mood was shattered. A woman came charging out, virtually screaming about how everyone had to exit immediately because PEOPLE ARE WAITING TO GET IN. A few moments later, while my wife and her group were waiting in the lobby while my daughter visited the ladies' room, a man confronted them, ordering everyone to get out right now because PEOPLE ARE WAITING TO GET IN. If people who choose to arrive far in advance of a showing are complaining about waiting, management should advise them to be patient rather than taking things out on the prior audience. If the theater isn't allowing sufficient time for the changeover in audiences then they obviously should adjust the show times by a few minutes. But under any circumstances, pushy, rude behavior is totally unnecessary, inappropriate, and is bad business. It's a shame. This could have been the start of a charming annual holiday tradition. But we'll never be back. read more

Hate to say this bc I've been to IFC for years and now it's a time that independent cinema needs support the most, but here we go ... Let me be clear I'm not a person who cannot live without a free bathrobe or any free gifts in general. However I hate the fact that I, along with all the other audiences who purchased the ticket for 2021.08.07's Annette Q&A screening didn't receive the free bathrobe that the audience from the previous day screenings received. We literally bought the same kind of tix but we were treated differently. Almost wanted to believe the conspiracy theory that the cinema already knows it beforehand but don't want to mention it on the website for fear of potential negative impact on their box office - because it's fine if no one knows it, but ppl won't be happy if they know they are not gonna have what other ppl might have. Let alone the fact that they used the same scheduling technique again: hunger marketing. Release two slots first and then add two additional ones several days later by "popular demand". There are two possible lessons learnt from this incident: Either 1. I work extra hard to go to see newly released film on the "opening night" to maximize my chance of getting exclusive merch, or 2. realize how childish this whole thing is and not gonna buy all those mentioned above again, I deserve sth better. And I choose the latter one. read more

I went to watch a small Indie film and I was the only one in the theater. It was nice to have the theater to myself, but the screen was definitely smaller than a regular theater so I wish there was a discount for that - the ticket costs $17 per adult which feels pretty steep. I didn't really like the one I watched so next time I go in would be when I'm closer to 100% sure that I would like the movie. read more

Indie theaters FTW! As avid movie fans (I'm also an online film critic), we've read about the IFC Theater many times and decided to go catch a flick while we were in NYC. This isn't a fancy nor a state of the art theater, but it's a true arthouse cinema in the greatest sense. This theater shows true independent films, so expand your horizons and check out a movie that you've never heard of. The screens are tiny and the seats old school and uncomfortable, but our audience was comprised of fellow intellectual filmgoers who were quiet and polite (nobody talked during the film -- shocker)! The theater has cool exhibits that rotate so be sure to check them out. On our visit they had incredible David Lynch vintage movie posters on display. This place isn't worth a trip out of your way unless you're big into movies. It's not a showy movie palace but it's a great venue for cool indies. read more

Came here since they were showing Weathering with You (天気の子), Makoto Shinkai's newest movie release. If you've seen Your Name (君の名は), you'll understand why there was so much hype around it. IFC fortunately was showing the movie, as they show International and Indie films, which I appreciate. What I didn't appreciate were the uncomfortable seats and how close the rows were to each other. It was also $16 for said uncomfortable seats. While I am glad that I got to see my movie of choice, I think I may opt for a more comfortable theater if I can. If you can rough out about 2 hours and IFC is the only theater that is featuring your movie, I'd say it's worth it. But if there are other theaters nearby, I'd opt for the other theater over IFC. NOTE: snacks and popcorn are also pretty pricey. Since this theater is in a prime location for bars and restaurants, I recommend eating a meal before coming in. read more

I went for an exclusive Shudder screening this week and really enjoyed the experience. The theater is small and intimate, clean and cozy. I didn't buy from the concession counter, but it seems they offer the usual movie theater fare. The restrooms are in a dark, sketchy hallway in the basement, but were well kept. It was a fun experience and I would definitely return again in the future. read more

On the positive side, IFC is always playing something worth seeing. They play older movies, indie stuff, and their studio ghibli marathons were always pretty great. For me, they have the absolute best selection of any theater in the city. On the negative side...the actual theaters are awful. The theater floor is flat, meaning that there's a good chance the head of the person in front of you will block your view. The seats are very old, noisy, uncomfortable, and sometimes just plain dirty. The rows are smushed together in a way that feels unsafe during covid and is just annoying during normal times. Their website for ordering tickets is clunky and hard to use, especially on a phone. To top it all off, tickets to IFC are EXPENSIVE. A ticket for a friday night cost me 17 dollars. This is roughly the same price as seeing a movie at the Alamo Drafthouse, which is the absolute most comfortable, cleanest theater I've ever been in. This is unacceptably expensive for a theater that feels so rundown. read more

If you sell a ticket for a show at 12:10 am on Friday 11/17, that is 10 minutes after midnight, Friday morning. However, according to the condescending man working tonight, everyone who arrived 20 minutes before show time is actually a day early. This is false advertising. I love this movie theater for having obscure films and hosting things like the Iranian Film Festival. That's not very common! However, the customer service is truly awful and such a time-waster. They need to get their shit together because paying movie-goers deserve better. The girl selling tickets in the booth is literally on her phone non-stop. It takes her effort to look up and answer questions. And when she does, she knows the answer to literally nothing. She will even sell you tickets to a showing, not knowing how many seats are left or if the remaining seats are next to each other. What is the point of this, then? Get some technology that will make this process more efficient. To counter this, you have to buy the tickets, go inside the theater, look around awkwardly, find possibly remaining seats, and see if they're next to each other, and if they're not, you have to go back downstairs and get a refund. How does this make any sense? On top of that, the ushers are so rude! They make it seem like you're inconveniencing them by attending a movie there or asking any questions. They also stand there as if they're guarding the president. It's not that serious, guys, it's a movie theater in the West Village. Because of their silly antics, about thirty minutes of my time is wasted each time I go. Not appreciated, and definitely not returning. read more

This is a no frills about it true and tested art house theatre. My best friend and I used to go to many an indie flick near our hometown when we were teenagers, and we decided to hop on board again with that, this time by watching the Oscar-nominated animated shorts. We got really excited watching the previews as there were some upcoming films we hadn't heard about that seemed very interesting. The theatre puts a lot of thought and care into their curated catalog. The theatre staff was nice and helpful in directing us to the screening room. I was a bit taken aback by the fact they weren't pretentious as some of the staff at my hometown art house theatre gave off that vibe on the regular. The actual screening room itself is lackluster and in all honesty, felt a bit grimy more than the usual movie theatre, however the picture quality was good and despite my love of Netflix, nothing quite gives you the experience a movie theatre does. read more

Small old school theater in Greenwich Village offering a variety of new and classic indie films. I recently came for the first time and was surprised that the seating in the theater is pretty limited, so if you come with a larger group, be sure to come early to sit together. I was about to run to the bathroom before heading to the room, but was very thankful that we were advised to grab and "secure" our seats first. The theater itself is nothing fancy - there's none of the lie flat or reclined seats here, but it has everything you need, including a solid concessions stand with a good amount of offerings. Ticket prices are also about the same as other big commercial movie theaters in NYC, but IFC Center has the advantage of showing independent films that you likely can't watch anywhere else. Definitely worth checking out. read more

I don't know anything about this theater except that they were showing Parasite at a good time while we were visiting NYC. We attended a show around 4:30 and were surprised it was sold out until we saw the theater- it held 35 people, no joke. It seems like an impressive theater due to the kinds of films they get, and the director q&a opportunities, but the chairs weren't that comfortable and the bathrooms were a hike from the seats. Glad I checked it out, maybe for New York this is normal, but I'm just used to a little more comfort for the price. read more

Such a small theater! Of course, this should be expected for an independent theater. However, this was my first time going to one so I was surprised. There isn't any room to sit on the first floor but they do have a seating area upstairs. There's about six theaters and the one I was in literally had four rows of maybe 12 seats each. Despite the close quarters you're required to have with fellow moviegoers, the people around me weren't disruptive during the film. With the theater being so tiny, I was surprised to find the concession stand had many unique options. They offer desserts from Ovenly, including a vegan option. They also have Sigmund's soft pretzels. I stuck with a medium bag of organic popcorn, which cost me over $7, but I figured it was worth supporting an independent theater. Especially since they were one of the only ones playing the movie I wanted to see. read more

I am more of a sunshine movie theater goer, but this spot is nice. I do like the down home "living room" feel to this place. - I have seen a few movies in the past here and got the chance to see the you know director in attendance for Q&A type stuff. One was the movie "ON THE OUTS" from a few years back, I love the movie and was very interested in hearing some stuff from the director after the film. Anticrist is here, oh snap, Might be time for another visit. -Only complaint I guess is that it is really small and is still expensive like 12.50 or $13.00 for a movie. Also I don't have discount passes for this theater as in the cases of most of the other ones: I get at least some kind of discount in ticket prices. read more

This place is a cinephile's paradise. Homey, and fun by a staff of film buffs who really know their stuff. Their programming lineup really can't be beat! Midnight classics, indie up-and-comers, whimsical family fare, and LOTS of special guests. They've got some of the best popcorn in town - as well as other speciality concessions. And a well-curated assortment of films and merchandise for sale too. Also, their Christmas showing of "It's a Wonderful Life" just can't be beat! read more

The IFC Center is so much more than a "movie theater". It is truly a cinematic experience. Years ago, and I mean YEARS ago, I knew there was something very special about this place when they put up a poster of "Rushmore" at the time of it's release in a place of prominence (1998 Sic transit gloria), and NEVER took it down. Any and every interesting/off beat/indie movie you might want to see is screened at the IFC. They also have a Ton of Q&A sessions with filmmakers and actors on opening weekends. In between new releases, they also screen old and cult classics. Just this weekend they are showing the original Hairspray (DIvine), followed by a Q&A with John Waters! Their snack bar has quality options, their bathrooms are clean, and yes, there is a water bottle filling station on the way to the bathrooms if you want to save $. read more

If you're one of the most prominent theaters in NYC why have you still not replaced your horribly uncomfortable seats? Also, sound was not immersive and was low in volume. Sucks that this theater got the Memoria release instead of Metrograph which has much more comfortable seating and an immersive sound system. Step it up IFC! read more

Garbage theater. Dirty. Employees rude. Uncomfortable seats. Dumb policies. Incompetent staff.

They are once again open. They have a lot of good independent and classic films from the 1930s all the way through the 1990s that they screen. However no concessions are being sold at this time. You are required to wear a mask inside any of the screening rooms. Not very pleasant and every other theater in new York city outside of the city in New York State Connecticut Pennsylvania and Massachusetts DO NOT Require mask wearing when eating or drinking. Hopefully this whole mask thing will be over in the next six months as most people will be fully vaccinated. I certainly will not be coming to the IFC Film Center until they start Offering concessions popcorn etc. and having no freaking mask requirement during a movie but who the hell wants to spend 15+ dollars for a ticket and we required to have a suffocating mask on your face during a movie. (Obviously they're not gonna have people coming in when the movie is screening and flashing flashlights around to see if you have a mask on)During the movie people are not talking interacting or standing close enough to each other and talking obviously. The action of breathing out really won't spread droplets enough to infect anybody. They should have proper ventilation systems anyway and I know they've upgraded them as a requirement of re-opening. So in conclusion if you want to be able to have something to drink and popcorn to eat wait until they actually start offering concessions and the mask mandate inside the theater while the movie is screening is dropped.. no need for them to be so overly cautious virtue signal. The Paris theater was giving out free popcorn and bottled water for the recent great screening of Goodfellas and 35 mm. read more
