I'm a fan of a documentary or indie movie. I'm a member of a chain spot so it's been some time since I've been here. So why was I here after a long hiatus? LUTHER VANDROSS!!! Amazing DOC!!! The seats were spacious and the rows were spacious. This place has a no frills but clean vibe. I'm not use to paying for a ticket...why is it so expensive?! LOL! It was definitely worth it to see Luther. I will definitely go back for another great doc.

I love this movie theater so much. You'll see indie films and documentaries that chain theaters don't tend to carry. They also often rerelease older films. They don't do reserved seating so get there early to choose your seat. In addition to snacks the concession stand also sells totes, shirts, and other goods celebrating directors and film.

Such a fun and iconic theater, amazing to have seen a classic movie here and have a little talkback with the creators. Staff was welcoming and I love the actual movie theater vibes as opposed to these conglomerate theaters which just seem like fast food restaurants. IFC for the win.

The IFC has tiny theaters inside. It was very intimate, my date and I enjoyed our experience here. We loved the Luther Vandross story. I laughed and cried. The service was excellent and the place is very clean. They also have gender neutral bathrooms. I would surely visit here again.

I adored this arthouse cinema! We don't really have many where I live, so I was thrilled to see all the options in NYC. I appreciated their merch as well as their tiny movie poster exhibit. The atmosphere and vibe are amazing. The bathrooms can be found in the basement. There are quite a few movies that play here. The theater room I went in, although smaller, had a great screen. The seats were comfy and a bit retro. I'd highly recommend visiting The IFC Center to all cinephiles and movie lovers. They rotate through a lot of great films.

I love movies, and over the past few years I have found myself seeking out classic and new films to gain new perspectives and experiences. I am particularly fond of independent films, which was only augmented by COVID lockdown where the majority of my time outside of work was spent watching them. A place like IFC Center really speaks to me, since they intentionally show independent, arthouse, and limited release films - but I had never been here prior to the other night since there are other arthouse theaters closer to me. My brother and I really wanted to see the new film Memoria, and the only theater that was playing it in NY was IFC Center - so I took this as an opportunity to check out the theater while seeing this very limited release film. Formerly called the Waverly Theater, IFC Center is located on 6th Ave in Greenwich Village - close to the B and D trains and right by NYU. I can tell the theater has been around for a while - it was well kept but had an older look and feel to it. As of the time of this review, they have temporarily stopped selling concessions and require you to be masked at all times while in the theater - proof of vaccination is also required. We were seated in theater 1, which was right in front of us beyond the box office. It was a decent sized theater - the seated weren't tiered but the screen was somewhat higher than normal so there was no obstruction of the screen by the people in front of you. The seats were fine - they auto-reclined via spring action with slight pressure, but they were slightly tighter than what I've experienced in other theaters. I'm blaming it on the age of the theater, rather than the potential/definite holiday weight I gained ;-) Staff was friendly, and overall I had a great first experience at IFC Center. They provided a comfortable environment to view a film, and followed all protocols to make sure we stayed safe and healthy. While it's not in my backyard, I would definitely return for an independent or limited release.

Always love this place for an indie film. It's the quintessential place to see a movie in NYC. Spend a day here with the Oscar shorts during award season.

Good old style theater, no frills theater with great indie showings. Stopped by for the Oscar nominated shorts and ordered the large popcorn w large soda combo for $12! Tickets for the movie were $17

The screen really isn't big enough, but I like the movie tho. Tix feel expensive after staying indoors for too long.

Hate to say this bc I've been to IFC for years and now it's a time that independent cinema needs support the most, but here we go ... Let me be clear I'm not a person who cannot live without a free bathrobe or any free gifts in general. However I hate the fact that I, along with all the other audiences who purchased the ticket for 2021.08.07's Annette Q&A screening didn't receive the free bathrobe that the audience from the previous day screenings received. We literally bought the same kind of tix but we were treated differently. Almost wanted to believe the conspiracy theory that the cinema already knows it beforehand but don't want to mention it on the website for fear of potential negative impact on their box office - because it's fine if no one knows it, but ppl won't be happy if they know they are not gonna have what other ppl might have. Let alone the fact that they used the same scheduling technique again: hunger marketing. Release two slots first and then add two additional ones several days later by "popular demand". There are two possible lessons learnt from this incident: Either 1. I work extra hard to go to see newly released film on the "opening night" to maximize my chance of getting exclusive merch, or 2. realize how childish this whole thing is and not gonna buy all those mentioned above again, I deserve sth better. And I choose the latter one.

Indie theaters FTW! As avid movie fans (I'm also an online film critic), we've read about the IFC Theater many times and decided to go catch a flick while we were in NYC. This isn't a fancy nor a state of the art theater, but it's a true arthouse cinema in the greatest sense. This theater shows true independent films, so expand your horizons and check out a movie that you've never heard of. The screens are tiny and the seats old school and uncomfortable, but our audience was comprised of fellow intellectual filmgoers who were quiet and polite (nobody talked during the film -- shocker)! The theater has cool exhibits that rotate so be sure to check them out. On our visit they had incredible David Lynch vintage movie posters on display. This place isn't worth a trip out of your way unless you're big into movies. It's not a showy movie palace but it's a great venue for cool indies.

Branded by IFC, the cable channel, this indie theater fits right in with, say, the Hershey Store - but in a good way.

When he checked our tickets, he surprised us with an upgrade that truly enhanced our evening. After the movie, we expressed our gratitude and were deeply impressed by his professional and humble demeanor. Travis also took the time to tell us about special events at the Speakeasy and even allowed us to take some photos. His exceptional service made our visit memorable, and we will certainly make IPIC our primary theater moving forward.

The staff came across as nonchalant and not very engaged, which set the tone right away. The food didn't help either--the spicy tuna was completely flavorless, not crispy and the drinks were underwhelming. We also weren't told ahead of time that you have to pick up your food and drinks yourself, which was surprising since we're used to full service at your seat. On the positive side, the popcorn and truffle fries were decent, but everything else fell short. The seats were just okay--not particularly comfortable. The bathroom situation was also frustrating--it's located upstairs near the restaurant and wasn't well maintained. There were no paper towels, and overall cleanliness was lacking. Overall, this felt like a subpar experience, and I won't be returning. My cousin mentioned the New Jersey location is much better, so maybe it's just this one--but based on this visit, I wouldn't recommend it.

(Click on my Substack for more Baumbach thoughts including my brief interaction with the auteur, as awkward as many of his finest scenes). You may have heard about the successful company that helped destroy movie theaters by pivoting to "content" meant to promote purchases of high-end TVs and nice couches. (Related, I went to Best Buy and didn't recognize anything. Is that a thermostat? A stereo? A smart garden hose?) This company was so successful, that after Knives Out was heralded as single-handedly reviving non-Marvel film, its sequel was withheld from the theaters it allegedly saved. (BTW, if you were planning to tell me to watch the amazing 53-part Quibi streaming series about The Golden Age Of Hollywood, don't bother). But after Netflix helped destroy theaters, it did a nice thing. It's one of those ironic moments like the purse-snatcher scene in Jay Kelly. It signed a lease that helped the Paris avoid the fate of the Ziegfeld and a million others, in a world where the AMC theaters that destroyed all the independents have been suffering themselves. So, while it was vile that Netflix thought Roma should be seen on TVs, it was nice of them to show it at the Paris, especially for the unusually vibrant sound. I saw Train Dreams Saturday. I suppose, like the kid in Squid and The Whale, I am a philistine. I wish I could praise its morose existentialism but I'm not quite on board. However, I did appreciate the majesty of the northwestern fires and falling trees in this venue. There was no assigned seating; not sure if this is just temporary, but if they keep that policy I might be obliged to overlook Netflix's evil and upgrade to 5 stars.
