Visited as a family of five while in Santa Cruz. The food was fine. The burgers were good, and the shepherd's pie was decent. The meat and vegetables were hot and flavorful, though the mashed potatoes scooped on top like ice cream had an unusual presentation. What bothered me was the service and the surprise charges. The restaurant seemed understaffed and service was slow, although it was busy and we were patient. We asked if one of the TVs could be changed to a World Cup match and were told it couldn't be done. Later, another TV far from us was changed to the World Cup game, which made that response confusing and frustrating. I was also surprised to find an automatic 18% gratuity added to our bill. We were a family of five, which I would not consider a large group, and we were not informed of the charge in advance. The menu referenced an automatic gratuity for groups of six or more, which did not apply to us. I normally tip at least 20%, so this wasn't about the amount--it was about transparency. Overall, the food was okay, but the service and unexpected charge left me with a negative impression. I won't be returning. read more

Searched for a place near our hotel to eat an early dinner. We had eight people, including three kids in our group, so we needed a place that could accommodate a large group and had a vast menu. Yelp came through again with this recommendation! They have a great menu and great beer variety. All dishes we ordered were great. Kids loved the hot dogs and hamburgers, adults loved the tacos and sandwiches. They had some Irish dishes (stew and Sheppard pie) that sounded great, but I was in the mood for tacos. Starting with the Pfiefer (9.6/10) this is your classic, all-American burger done right. American cheese, BBQ sauce, crispy bacon, and an onion ring stacked perfectly on top. It felt American in the best way. The patty was well seasoned and juicy, bacon perfectly crisp, and the BBQ sauce tied everything together without overpowering it. Honestly, the only complaint? I wanted an even bigger one. Now the real star! The Huckleberry (9.9/10). This one surprised me. Bacon, sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and horseradish sauce served on sourdough bread. The sourdough took it to another level crispy on the outside, soft inside, and packed with flavor. The horseradish sauce added just enough kick without being overwhelming. Total douchebag bartender with terrible service except for to his douchebag Brad and Chad friends. He wouldn't let me order two drinks at once, "drink some of your beer first" am I five years old?! I'm a middle aged man that looks like I can handle my liquor. I almost left after the beer because of that but he showed up with my old fashioned after I downed my light beer in a few minutes and I didn't want to be an asshole and refuse it. I always order a light beer and an old fashioned together at every bar. It's called a chaser. What bar does that? Yet the woman who was a regular next to me was way over served and he comped her last drink wtf I hope she wasn't driving. I figured I'd stick to my guns and order a burger like I came for and try his old fashioned that the wasted lady next to me was raving about. And his old fashioned was average, not bad but not special. The rest of the time he was inattentive while hanging with his local bros. Burger was good flavor but it was cooked more well than medium and bun was soggy and fell apart. Garlic fries way too strong. I had to keep waiting to get his attention when I needed something because he wasn't checking on me regularly. I had to ask the barback who looked like she was in a daze clearing my plate for my check. That didn't help so I still had to wait for him to check on me for ten minutes to get it. I should've trusted my gut and not showed up to the pretentious looking place. I'll never come here again. My friend and I took our daughters to this place. Would never go back there again. It took over 40 minutes for our order for a weekday lunch. Our kids' grilled cheese was cold and the cheese looked burnt and not even melted properly. I think they just took a slice of American cheese and stuck it between two pieces of bread. The fries were really greasy and oily, and the BLTA did not taste good at all. The service was bad and we had to try to get the waitress' attention many times to get any service. I came here about a year ago, but after waiting to be greeted by servers for over 15+ minutes, my friends and I left. I wanted to give Parish Publick another chance, after hearing about it from several people around town. I stopped by on Sunday around 1:30pm, the restaurant (including outdoor seating) & bar were both decently busy. This establishment uses self seating, but once we sat down we weren't even greeted by anyone for at least five minutes (Gave me deja vu). Once greeted we were given some time with the menus, which has lots of options to choose from! My boyfriend and I stopped by specifically for Burger Week, they had three options to pick from. I got the "Tropic Like It's Hot" & my boyfriend got the "Fajita Bandida". We also ordered the "Lavender Sour" & "Pear-ish", drinks took about 10 minutes to come out and were decent. It took about 30+ minutes for my food to come out, at this time they told my boyfriend there was still a delay in the kitchen with his food. We ended up splitting my burger and by the time we finished asked for his Togo. The burger we split was yummy and the portions are big (for food), but we both left extremely disappointed with service. Our server also only checked on us once & was hasty while interacting. The food runner was helpful, kind and apologetic though. I can understand things taking a while when it's busy, but having to wait that long at a casual pub is ridiculous. I feel bad for the staff having the scramble around and feel that it is the responsibility of management to properly staff their business. Totally stumbled upon this bar during Happy Hour because my friends and I wanted a snack. We were lured in by the "3 for $12 tacos" deal, which was superb. There wasn't an extra charge for seafood, so I chose 2 salmons and 1 grilled shrimp (though fried shrimp was tempting too). The cocktails were great and served perfectly (ie, chilled glasses and dried fruit decor). I heard the draft beer selection was great and tasted fresh. We also got other snacks, but the tacos were my favorite. I have to return next time with an empty stomach because Parish has THE best burgers around! We sat at the bar to watch the game and mingle with other locals, so I can't speak to how good the table service is, but the bartender was wonderfully quick with orders, drinks and food. She didn't partake in any small talk, which could appear unfriendly to some, but I thought she was professional and diligent at her job, so I liked her! Also, this location is quite different than their Aptos location. This one has a pool table and is more bar-focused. There are some tables on the side by the windows, but not many. We have come here about 5 times since returning to Santa Cruz. Service has been horrible! The atmosphere is loud and prohibitive of conversation. My biggest issue is with the food service. I have a reflux issue, I can't control. Fat makes me regurgitate my food, throw it up! I am careful to tell the staff that my bacon must be crisp, not bendable and of course I don't want it burnt. My first BLTA the bacon was half done. I pointed it out and a plate of bacon was brought to me and thrown in front of me. I was able to pick through and get enough for a half of a sandwich. We could not get staffs attention. Which is a big issue here. I like rubens, but again, I asked for no fat. It was mostly fat. I complained and was told it was what it is. I picked through and got maybe a half sandwich. The next three times I got a cobb salad, it was actually pretty good. Again food was sat infront of us and staff split like they were on fire. So this last time. Again I explained my issue with fat and ask if I could get my bacon crisp, but not burnt. I was told sure. The girl sat the plate down and asked anything else. I responded ranch. She reach inder the counter and while I was checking the bacon took off. I called after her as she started to walk away no response, just kept on walking. I waited until anyone at the other end of the bar looked my direction and held up the limp bacon. The man who took my otder came down and chastised me for waving food. I explained I had been ignored by the girl who dropped if off and he again told me not to wave food. After he took my sandwich I asked if my fries would be cold. He said it wou have fresh fries. He did bring back my sandwich with mostly crisp and not burnt bacon. one piece was chared. I ate my sandwich. Fries were warm not hot. I was not charged for my beer, I assume as reparations for my meal. We will not be returning! Too noisy and staff is not at all helpful and acts put out. read more

Came to this place because it mentioned it's dog friendly and they have dog menu! We gave our little dog the beef patty which peas and carrots. The beef patty was actually really good (when I tried it). I think they use good meat, or at least ones that have a little bit of fat on it. We weren't expecting much because it was a small place at the end of the plaza, but I absolutely loved the food here! In fact, I would want to come here again when I'm back in Santa Cruz! It's a spicy Asian style garlic sauce. My garlic fries had potential but were not hot. We both ordered sides of the ranch dressing for dipping our fries and onion rings. It tastes like it's homemade. I don't think I've ever had a sandwich with meat that was more over cooked than the Irish dip was here. Aside from that though, the food was good. The big bowl of au jus kept the sandwich edible and gave it some good flavor. The fries were beyond tasty, the ranch was great, and the portions were huge! Word on the street is that since their second location opened this one has become more about the bar and less about the food. With that being said, they had a good draft list and a few specialty cocktails, so I could see that being the case. The place gave off a sorta townie bar vibe, in a good way though.
