Visited as a family of five while in Santa Cruz. The food was fine. The burgers were good, and the shepherd's pie was decent. The meat and vegetables were hot and flavorful, though the mashed potatoes scooped on top like ice cream had an unusual presentation. What bothered me was the service and the surprise charges. The restaurant seemed understaffed and service was slow, although it was busy and we were patient. We asked if one of the TVs could be changed to a World Cup match and were told it couldn't be done. Later, another TV far from us was changed to the World Cup game, which made that response confusing and frustrating. I was also surprised to find an automatic 18% gratuity added to our bill. We were a family of five, which I would not consider a large group, and we were not informed of the charge in advance. The menu referenced an automatic gratuity for groups of six or more, which did not apply to us. I normally tip at least 20%, so this wasn't about the amount--it was about transparency. Overall, the food was okay, but the service and unexpected charge left me with a negative impression. I won't be returning. read more

Starting with the Pfiefer (9.6/10) this is your classic, all-American burger done right. American cheese, BBQ sauce, crispy bacon, and an onion ring stacked perfectly on top. It felt American in the best way. The patty was well seasoned and juicy, bacon perfectly crisp, and the BBQ sauce tied everything together without overpowering it. Honestly, the only complaint? I wanted an even bigger one. Now the real star! The Huckleberry (9.9/10). This one surprised me. Bacon, sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese, and horseradish sauce served on sourdough bread. The sourdough took it to another level crispy on the outside, soft inside, and packed with flavor. The horseradish sauce added just enough kick without being overwhelming. Every bite was balanced, savory, and rich without feeling too heavy. Easily one I'd go back for again and again. We ordered side salads (because balance) and they were actually amazing fresh, crisp, and not an afterthought like most burger spots. Our kids' grilled cheese was cold and the cheese looked burnt and not even melted properly. I think they just took a slice of American cheese and stuck it between two pieces of bread. The fries were really greasy and oily, and the BLTA did not taste good at all. The service was bad and we had to try to get the waitress' attention many times to get any service. I came here about a year ago, but after waiting to be greeted by servers for over 15+ minutes, my friends and I left. I wanted to give Parish Publick another chance, after hearing about it from several people around town. I stopped by on Sunday around 1:30pm, the restaurant (including outdoor seating) & bar were both decently busy. This establishment uses self seating, but once we sat down we weren't even greeted by anyone for at least five minutes (Gave me deja vu). Once greeted we were given some time with the menus, which has lots of options to choose from! My boyfriend and I stopped by specifically for Burger Week, they had three options to pick from. I got the "Tropic Like It's Hot" & my boyfriend got the "Fajita Bandida". We also ordered the "Lavender Sour" & "Pear-ish", drinks took about 10 minutes to come out and were decent. It took about 30+ minutes for my food to come out, at this time they told my boyfriend there was still a delay in the kitchen with his food. We ended up splitting my burger and by the time we finished asked for his Togo. The burger we split was yummy and the portions are big (for food), but we both left extremely disappointed with service. Our server also only checked on us once & was hasty while interacting. The food runner was helpful, kind and apologetic though. I can understand things taking a while when it's busy, but having to wait that long at a casual pub is ridiculous. I feel bad for the staff having the scramble around and feel that it is the responsibility of management to properly staff their business. Overall, their food was good, but I don't think I would come back after experiencing issues with service twice; there are plenty of good places in Santa Cruz that don't take as long to get a good meal. read more

Totally stumbled upon this bar during Happy Hour because my friends and I wanted a snack. We were lured in by the "3 for $12 tacos" deal, which was superb. There wasn't an extra charge for seafood, so I chose 2 salmons and 1 grilled shrimp (though fried shrimp was tempting too). The cocktails were great and served perfectly (ie, chilled glasses and dried fruit decor). I heard the draft beer selection was great and tasted fresh. We also got other snacks, but the tacos were my favorite. I have to return next time with an empty stomach because Parish has THE best burgers around! We sat at the bar to watch the game and mingle with other locals, so I can't speak to how good the table service is, but the bartender was wonderfully quick with orders, drinks and food. She didn't partake in any small talk, which could appear unfriendly to some, but I thought she was professional and diligent at her job, so I liked her! Also, this location is quite different than their Aptos location. This one has a pool table and is more bar-focused. There are some tables on the side by the windows, but not many. There was plenty of seating inside on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. They also have seating outside. My daughter ordered the Pfeiffer burger. She loved the burger with onion rings. Good but I probably wouldn't order them. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich with the garlic sauce and a side of garlic fries. The sandwich was a bit overcooked and I wasn't a big fan of the sauce. It's a spicy Asian style garlic sauce. My garlic fries had potential but were not hot. We both ordered sides of the ranch dressing for dipping our fries and onion rings. It tastes like it's homemade. I don't think I've ever had a sandwich with meat that was more over cooked than the Irish dip was here. Aside from that though, the food was good. The big bowl of au jus kept the sandwich edible and gave it some good flavor. The fries were beyond tasty, the ranch was great, and the portions were huge! Word on the street is that since their second location opened this one has become more about the bar and less about the food. With that being said, they had a good draft list and a few specialty cocktails, so I could see that being the case. The place gave off a sorta townie bar vibe, in a good way though. I ordered the philly cheesesteak sandwich. It was pretty good and def filling, though it has I think American cheese on it, and it would def taste better with some provolone instead. The American cheese just tasted a bit like fake cheese on the sandwich. The sandwich was the best part of this visit though. We sat outside and it was very loud with cars going by all the time. People from the bar kept coming outside to smoke and the smoke traveled to the tables, so I smelled cigarette smoke the entire time I sat there trying to eat. Dog etiquette is also lacking there. Some guy sat right next to my pup with his pup, when there were so many other tables open. And then his dog wouldn't stop barking at my dog, and kept barking the entire time I was eating my sandwich. The staff didn't do anything about it either. I ended up moving with Lilo to the other end of the table to get away from his unruly dog. My friend tried to order the roast beef sandwich. They came back like about 15-20 minutes later and told him they were out of the stuff for the sandwich and asked him if he wanted something else. He got a burger, but I finished my entire sandwich and his burger still hadn't come out. We just cancelled the burger order after that, since we were pretty much done. Our server also forgot our drinks and we had to ask a different server for our drinks. There was a large table that our server had to serve, so I get the delay on some of that. But the overall combo of being out of stuff, not getting our drinks, not bringing the burger out within a reasonable amount of time, the rude dog, and the consistent smell of cigarette smoke, makes me not want to go back again. read more

Holy cow this was delicious. MJA Winery recommended this place for our wine tasting break (lots of wine tasting rooms in area). Really large portions served with tasty fries! The philly cheesteak came with a really nice roll that held up nicely! We started with the pickle spears deep fried in beer batter - best fried pickle I have ever had - they were hotter than hot but I didn't care, needed to eat as fast as humanly possible, so delicious! It definitely appears to be a local hangout and they had a few different sports games on at the bar! I cannot comment on the alcohol choices as we just had arnold palmers which were lovely and refreshing! There were a few servers that would come by and check on us, Bryce was our main server and was very pleasant and helpful in offering recommendations!
