Campground looks nice, but our group did not camp- we rented kayaks and did the 6-mile float on the beautiful Black River. Except... the float wasn't 6 miles, but only 4.3 miles. We were pretty peeved that this trip was advertised as something that it wasn't. Not sure if the takeout point was moved up or if the float has always been just 4 miles and no one has spoken up about it. read more

Average campground as long as you don't have any special situations or issues. My friends and I have been camping and canoeing here for years, but this year we had a couple experiences that will keep us away for good. the good: mostly friendly staff; showers, flush toilets, and sinks available; easy river access; always available canoes; rental office open late and has lots of supplies the bad: terrible customer service; poorly maintained campsites and grounds; unsafe canoes and kayaks This place has all the basic things you'd want from a campsite and canoe/kayak/raft/tube outfitter - basic amenities, basic goods for sale, etc. but this year we found out fifteen minutes into our float that one of hte kayaks had a breach and was filling rapidly with water. We tried to patch the breach and considered towing the kayak behind one of the canoes, but it was taking on so much water that it wasn't possible. we had to ditch the kayak on a gravel bar and move on. Our phones had no signal, so at the end of hte float we notified staff of what we did. Staff returned to the spot where we left the kayak, and they told us the kayak was missing. This is actually not the first time our group has encountered this, but this was the most serious occasion - we've always been able to manage in the past. The guy with the kayak had to ride as the 3rd person in someone else's canoe. What if he had been floating alone? Not only would the outfitter not refund the kayak rental (a rental that we did not get to use for more than 30 minutes), but they then suggested they should be asking us to pay for the loss of the kayak. If the kayak had been water-ready, none of this would have happened. The owner directly told us that she did not care one bit if we ever returned, despite the huge amount of business we've brought to them over the years. Meanwhile, the group camping next to us blared very loud heavy metal music literally until dawn both nights, but the staff did nothing to stop or deter them. They did, however, make a point of patrolling the riverfront to make sure no one was hanging out down there past sundown. We went there loyally for years (instead of numerous other outfitters and locations) and the first time we have something go wrong, the owner told us that our business didn't matter to her at all and suggested that we should in fact be paying her hundreds of dollars more. My group has already talked and won't be coming back here. read more

The lady at the office was exceptionally nice and friendly. We rented a canoe on Aug. 12. We set off at about 11:00 am for a six mile float. She said there would be someone at the pick up location until 5 or 5:30pm. A young man was waiting for us at the canoe to put in. He asked if we could hurry to make it back to the take out spot by 2-3pm, because he didn't want to wait around all day for us. Then my husband asked if their were life jackets in the boat. He said No, you won't need them. I said, aren't they supposed to come with a canoe rental? In fact, isn't it the law to provide them? He reluctantly threw a couple in for us. The guy waited till we shoved off, then he speedily drove his truck up to the next sand bar, presumably to watch and see if we were able to avoid a spill on the first rough patch. Disappointed I am sure, he drove off. He was rude and smart mouthed and un-accommodating. Based on him, we would give him a zero star, but the office lady was nice enough for the stars to meet in the middle at a three. read more

It is hard to give a one star review to a place your family has been going to and recommending for 15 years, but an unfortunate event this past weekend culminated in one of the most horrible examples of customer service I have ever witnessed -- by the owner of the campground, nonetheless. For years we have been taking groups of people 8-15 people for floats from Park's Bluff Campground. This past weekend we had 8 people; 3 canoes and 2 kayaks. After leaving for our float we discovered, about a half mile down river, that one of the kayaks had a significant crack in the bottom of the stern. It looked like it had been dropped off of a trailer. After trying several different things to patch it, and after trying from 3 or 4 positions to call the office, we made the decision to leave the kayak on a gravel bar and move on. I had to ride in the middle of another canoe for the rest of the trip. It was kind of a bummer but I guess such things are occasionally to be expected and I expected to get a refund for the broken equipment; afterall our group had just spent nearly $300 with this campground and we have been visiting for 15 years. When we took out at the end of the float we told them what happened. Everyone from our group offered an account of what happened and where we left the kayak. Later on that night they came to our campground and claimed they could not find the kayak. The next day, when I asked the owner for a refund for of the kayak rental cost, she informed me that the kayak appears to have been stolen from the gravel bar we left it on. She said, "I can't believe you would ask me for a refund after you left it somewhere." I told her that was unfortunate but that didn't change the fact that they rented broken equipment; had they checked the equipment (part of running a rental operation) they would not be out a kayak. I informed her that the group had been coming there for 15 years and that I had worked in rentals myself. I told her that, when you rent broken equipment you make it right, no matter what, and hope you don't loose a customer. Her response was, "If you don't come back then you don't come back but I'm not going to refund your money." Upon pressing the point she told me again that she wasn't going to refund my money and that she wasn't going to argue with me anymore. Their facilities, like their gear, have become somewhat run down over the years and their roads are terrible; even in an SUV. They do a poor job of enforcing their noise rules for the loud people next to you who will play crappy cockrock all night long while telling stories of how they ran from the cops while eating all the drugs in their car; but they won't let you go sit by the river to escape this idiocy. Take the owner's advice and don't visit this place. There are several other Ozark rivers that are in a better ecological state that the Black is. If you do want to visit this river then you should try a different Lesterville area campground. read more
