Delicious coffee, perfect. Obviously. BUT, Toby's please bring in a no lap top rule for the weekends for the round tables. People just camp there, sitting on their laptops for hours and hours taking up a place meant for three people whilst groups of people, holding their quickly dying espresso drinks, wait for somewhere to sit. Not impressed with this place. coffee is ok, not great. Funny... for all its pomp and pretense, the coffee is just decent. Baristas and vibe of this place are douchiest of the douchiest, more so than any other coffee shop I have been to. Decoration and vibe is generic/corporate looking which is not my favorite, maybe some people dont mind that because they are just there to work on their computers. Bleh, blue bottle is comparable with much nicer down to earth staff so if I had to grab a coffee in this immediate area, I would go there instead. read more

It's a bit nuts on the weekends, but honestly this is the best cup of coffee in the hood. I've been in Brooklyn 18 years and this is my favorite cup of coffee so far. It's expensive, so I wouldn't go there every day, but you're paying for the 5 mins it takes to make a pour-over coffee. I'm a black coffee drinker, so I have no idea what it tastes like with milk and sugar. But black, this coffee=Yum. read more

I give three stars because the place is not well-managed when they get busy. The lines get long because they haven't figured out how to efficiently manage their staff at the counter. The coffee is good, and I like how they have classes (cupping, etc.). But the service is sometimes great, sometimes awful. If they could just improve their service, i would come here a lot more often. read more

I never quite feel welcome at Toby's Estate and - in that sense - it is rather similar to Blue Bottle Coffee down the road, though the quality of the fare at Toby's Estate is unarguably superior. On all my expeditions to this coffee haven, the staff have been friendly and helpful in assisting me with my coffee decisions, though I'm very much susceptible to the power of suggestion and it is amazing how the most expensive coffee on the list always appears to be the one that comes highly recommended. Oh well. With regards to the coffee, they usually have a selection of approximately four single-origin drip coffees from which to choose, which is more than enough for my purposes. So what is the problem? As other reviewers have indicated, the place is like an Apple store in which people are bedecked in the garb befitting of their Williamsburg station, typing away on their laptops in earnest for hours on end, occasionally forcing their heads from the screen before them, only to throw you a dirty glance as though you don't quite belong in their office space. There is a level of snobbery in this establishment that is almost unparalleled in this area and it certainly detracts from the experience. This is a [insert your favorite expletive] coffee shop, it is neither your office nor is it a daycare center for that matter! However, it seems like a good place in which to be seen and - with a wall of windows - that is necessarily the case. While I wouldn't come here specially for the food, I have tried the sourdough toast with ricotta, slow-roasted tomatoes and herb-walnut pesto, which was surprisingly good. Needless to say, there is a decent selection of pastries and sandwiches from which to choose and they are of a good standard should you need something with which to accompany your coffee. Conclusion: The coffee, though perfectly good, is unaffordable for the product being offered (and I'm not averse to paying a premium for good coffee). Of course, I'm not a coffee aficionado by any stretch of the imagination and I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between a $3 and a $4.75 variety, but I have a feeling that good ol' Toby is having the last laugh on these sales. Furthermore, it is often difficult to find a seat on account of the extreme hogging taking place (one would think that people would have outgrown this behavior after their library-camping days during college) and - even if one were to find a seat - best you embody one of the hipster/yuppie with child/miscellaneous stereotypes people like to throw around because this area is so cliquish. However, if you are looking for good coffee in its simplest form, there is salvation: Black Brick, Gimme! Coffee, Oslo, Sweetleaf, Upright, Variety and so on and so forth are all within walking distance. read more

I have moved to this neighborhood three years ago, in the beginning, this was my "go-to" spot! Not only did I enjoy the ambiance but also the espresso bean was just right. I used to bring all my Williamsburg guests to this place. However, somewhere along the way something happened and all the aromas and flavor of the espresso bean I have enjoyed so much have changed. The cappuccino was not the sam, not any more...I continued to come by every once in a while, hoping that maybe I just had bad luck and came across bean batches that didn't hit my palette right...sadly the tastes continued to deliver the same. In my experience, this new quality level steered the shine from this this spot and my joyful experiences faded away. I know. I was bummed. I am bummed. I give it a three star because I have connected strongly initially and now I can not go back. Still love the interior being an interior designer myself...but I had to venture out on a new journey to finding the right spots to get the my fix. read more

Coffee at Toby's is great, don't get me wrong. This morning, the music they are playing is so loud that you cloud nearly hear your own mind and once again, their free wifi is down. Yes, I said once again. As for their coffee, I like Toby's coffee and they are a close second to Oslo, in my view. The place on North 6th though, is awesome with the huge windows letting the sunlight in. But the music and the finicky wifi, dude, is not cool. Just sayin'. read more

So disappointed! I am a serious toby's fan and have been countless times for breakfast and coffee. Today, however, we wished we had spent out $20 on something else. We ordered two egg sandwiches and both were schockingly below par. They were cold, bland, and wholly unappetizing. Had a misunderstanding this morning during my first visit to Toby's. I'd ordered several 12-oz bags of coffee online and stopped by to pick them up. The cashier went in the back and couldn't find them, nor could a second rep. Their reaction after that puzzled me: They said that either they or I needed to speak to the rep that had called me to let me know the order was ready. I didn't have that person's name, and the counter person essentially stopped helping me at that point. I stepped to the side and began listening to voicemails to find the one in question. After a minute, the woman who was helping me came over and said, "Just take whatever coffee you'd ordered off the shelf, that's fine. And it'll be fresher." I appreciated her offer, but again, puzzled that her retail approach was to have someone take $60 worth of coffee off the shelf while unwilling to dig a little for a previously placed order (and surprised that they don't have a better system in place). Finally, I found the voicemail, the rep called her colleague, and the bags of paid-for java were produced. The counter rep graciously swapped out the week-old roast for fresh. I left with this important take-away: This location is geared toward retail--sit, sip, and linger. If you order coffee online, have it delivered, or else just stop in and pick up a bag off the shelf on post-roast days. With so many other legit coffee options online and in the city, a maiden experience like this leaves me unlikely to hit Toby's again--and from the looks of their massive retail loft space and $12.50 Toby's tote bags for sale, they won't miss me. read more

Anyone who lives in Williamsburg knows that there are plenty of good coffee shops every corner you turn. However, none of them are as good as Toby's Estate. Originally a Starbucks fanatic, it was hard for me to try other coffee spots and I was reluctant when a friend told me to try it. So on one cold winter day, I decided to try it. As soon as you open the door, it's like you've entered a whole new world. There are always people sitting at the tables chatting with their friends and also people who are just working. The decor and overall vibe of the place makes you feel right at home. The first time I went there, I did not know what to order and the people who work there were super nice and friendly when I asked them for a recommendation. Service is super quick and if you're in a rush, you'll be out in no time. This is a good place to meet up with friends and to socialize. But if you're someone like me who works best in silence, this place may not be for you because of the noise. I would definitely recommend anyone who is new to or loves coffee to give this place a try. read more

great place to write/think. great light. servers are kind. one question about drip coffee: since it already takes forever... why weight water and reset your timers/using electric scales when you can just look at the liquid in the glass carafe? it is pretty obvious to all when the coffee reaches the right quantity (+ the clear containers you use have indentures/notches for quantity: one notch = one cup to stay, a little more = a cup to go!). it looks preposterous and waste of battery (time? objects? gestures? energy? brain?) that you need to use a scale. it looks odd and not intelligent. glass exists for a reason! sorry if this sounds pedantic. it is very frustrating to wait every morning for something that feels useless. if there is something I am missing, I apologize. read more

Was excited to give it a try as my wife is Australian, but alas, I'll stick to my neighborhood favorites. The coffee here is more expansive than most around (save maybe for Blue Bottle), but not any better. Also the counter staff were..., not hospitable shall we say.
