On a recent visit to Little Havana in Miami, I visited this bakery with a walking food tour group. Our guide recommended two items specifically: croqueta and guava pastelito. We were given an opportunity to try both. The croqueta looks like a fat fried mozzarella stick, but softer and not as crusty or crunchy. Inside is a creamy, whipped potato filling. This is a savory item and slightly salty. The guava pastelito is a bit like eating layers of flaky, buttery croissant almost like a filo crust with a bright red, sweet guava jam filling. Both were tasty, but this was one of the last stops on our food tour. We were all pretty stuffed at this point. There were several tables and chairs for people, but not enough for our group. People coming in were guided by a velvet rope line so they could order, put items in their tray and then slide their tray down the rails to pay at the register. Decent place that had a real chain type feel to it. You could tell the women working here hate their job as the place seems like it must be busy most of the time. No hustle whatsoever for anyone working in the place. Sigh. So, saying that, it took us a good 20 minutes to get our 2 Cuban sandwiches and a couple of pre made pastries. The line moved very slow and they only had 1 women taking and making orders at a time and 1 other woman working the cash register. The food we ordered was fine, but totally forgettable. I've been here a few times and the service has been some of the best in the area. Not sure why their rating is so low but the food here is pretty good. Pastries are always fresh as well as the sandwiches and prices aren't inadequate for the quality and portion size. This bakery is one of the better ones in Calle Ocho. I've tried several pastries that were delectable, the breakfast sandwiches are really really good especially the omelette sandwiches. I've also tried their shakes and I've had no complaints. The Cuban coffee could use some work but I think is more of a brand issue than the art of making it or the equipment for that matter. There's plenty of parking in the area so that's not an issue and the place is nicely decorated so not sure why they're not a solid 4 star rated bakery but what can you do, everyone has an opinion and a unique experience when visiting an establishment. read more

A friend and I decided to explore Little Havana on our recent trip to Florida and stopped here to try the infamous Cuban Guava and Cheese pastries. When we walked inside, the place looked like a commercial donut shop... not an authentic Cuban place or some place to write home about. The pastries were reasonably priced and looked like they all would taste good, but again looked very commercial (like they churn them out left and right.... or that they order them in). Not wanting to order just one thing... we ordered the coconut pastry as well and decided to each eat half (of each of the pastries). The guava cheese was pretty good, but the coconut was bland and disappointing. If the place was a bit more authentic to the area, I could've gotten past that as a trade off but really just wasn't impressed. The pros is that they have a large selection, the best prices on the street and they are clean but the cons are that you don't have anything that really ties the place to the area and the pastries taste like something you can pick up at a grocery store. read more

Friday, January 2 at about 10:40 am, waiting in line saw a female employee drop a "papa rellena" on the floor, she picked it up and placed it on the display counter for sale. I stopped here unintentionally. I was initially just captivated by the live chickens walking around the bushes outside the bakery. After admiring them I kept walking and was drawn to their sandwiches. I did have plans to eat somewhere else on calle ocho but I couldn't resist their Cuban sandwich. I ordered one and it came out in about 7-10 minutes. It had ham, pulled pork, cheese, mustard, and pickles all inside Cuban bread. Ordering was easy and all the staff were super helpful. The sandwich was a good portion (approximately 8 inches long, then cut in half). It filled me just enough. The cheese was melted perfectly. The bread was toasted to golden perfection, no burnt spots and crunchy. The ham and pulled pork were very tasty and although it didn't have too much of each ingredient, I sort of preferred it that way so I could taste everything equally. I think it was a bit flatter than most pictures I've seen of cuban sandwiches but because the ratios of everything was about equal I was happy with the taste. I know this is not customary to the Cuban sandwich but some Mayo would've been excellent. I did think it was a bit dry which was the only critique I have. Overall I enjoyed every aspect of my visit; the staff, the chickens, the ambiance, the bakery items displayed, the cleanliness (including bathrooms), and the price ($7-$8). read more

A good number of customers inside also signaled good things for sale. "Follow the crowd" and "Look for the lines." Staff were hustling to wait on customers and taking time to answer questions, but not all staff spoke English- like the sweet lady who waited on me. She tried to get someone to tell me what a certain pastry had inside, but I ended up just "going with my gut" and getting what caught my eye. I just pointed and got two of each and upon tasting while waiting for Café Americano one was a fantastic, flaky croissant dough with custard cream inside and turbanado auger outside giving it a delicate crunch/ chew of flavor. Love this location so much! Its so much needed on Calle Ocho. On Calle Ocho there are many locations that have traditional cuban pastries. But none that are truly dedicated to making it with the quality of a world class bakey. This location changes that. You can tell as soon as you come in and see the set up that they are serious about their craft. I've come here several times in the past few weeks, ordering an assortment of things and usually spending $20 - $40. The pastelitos and croquetas are pretty much the same as in any other Cuban bakery - 'good enough.' (The meat in the pastelitos is a bit too pink but that is sometimes found in pastelitos and varies by bakery.) Don't let the lines fool you -- it seems to me that about 90% of its customers are tourists. It has business due to its location, not due to its product - i.e., a tourist trap. Still, the product is good enough and the desserts are tasty. Well, today was an eye-opener. ***If you want croquetas that are FREEZING COLD IN THE CENTER and INEDIBLE, this is your spot.*** As part of my order today, I ordered 12 croquetas de jamon (ham croquettes). The wait was longer than even usual (did I mention the employees here are often conversing and joking with each other and seem annoyed to have to stop chatting and take your order? Good luck even getting their attention). They finally then mentioned the long wait because they were frying the ham croquetas, as they had run out. No problem. So I waited and ultimately received my order. I then sat down outside to have one of the croquetas before driving away, and... I honestly want to throw up even thinking about it... the center inside FREEZING COLD inside and HARD... (i.e., NOT READY FOR CONSUMPTION). Picture a TV dinner that you didn't leave in the microwave long enough and the center is still freezing. I tried not to gag. I went back in and, discretely/politely (so that other customers would not hear) informed the cashier (whom I'd paid and tipped),"I think the croquetas weren't ready. They're freezing cold in the middle." Hang on for the best part -- SHE TELLS ME THAT'S WHAT CROQUETAS ARE LIKE! (Hm, I'm a Cuban American who's been eating croquetas her entire life. No, croquetas are not 'cold' in the center. This is like telling someone a steak that is freezing cold in the middle is totally normal and "that's how it's served." Only after I insisted did she begrudgingly tell the lady who was deep-frying... to fry them some more. That employee had nearly as bad an attitude (awful) and was giving off the 'Hm, just eat your croquetas freezing cold and hard, lady' vibe. When she gave them back to me, she just merely pushed them towards me on the counter, without any "Sorry, for giving you disgusting, frozen, inedible food." So anyway, if you like your meat freezing cold and hard inside, definitely order here. Also, if you like the worst customer-service imaginable, you will enjoy this place.
