I wanted to give 2 stars, but considering other American optometrist, I raised it to 3 stars [before the update]. to be honest, it may well be that, by American standards, this place is 4-5 stars. the optometrist seemed knowledgeable PROS: they explained my insurance benefits clearly, and correctly quoted me the prices, unlike other optometrist I tried before everybody was polite the optometrist accepted in good grace I did not want to put drops in my eyes CONS: I asked for no reminders, they called to remind anyway I felt like I was sitting through an infomercial since the receptionist, optician and optometrist all tried to get me to do a test not covered by insurance (it was suggested a total for 5 times, even before they checked my vision). it seemed to me the opticians were chatting with one of the optometrist while I was waiting to pick frame and lenses, after the eye exam. they might well have been working, but perhaps they could have taken care of that after I was gone instead of making me wait. the eye exam was way too long, with flashlights in my eye multiple times, I was exhausted afterwards, would not do again. in the end I got the same prescription I asked for, that I've been using for years. I don't understand how Americans put up with mandatory eye checks every year. in other countries you can buy contacts with no prescription. the patient form was asking a lot of unnecessary info, like my work place address? I struck through those. pretty standard in USA, but still quite a bother UPDATE: I got my glasses, and they were crooked, so I went back to fix the frame, but they couldn't. they are cheap glasses for backup, and it's probably the insurance lab's fault for inserting the lenses and bending the frame, but still the optometrist should make sure the customer goes out the door without skewed glasses. read more

I am writing an addendum to the initial review....I will not be going back here and will not be referring anyone here...I had my sister cancel her appointment also. When I had the lenses to my glasses filled here....was told that he would allow me to redo the lenses if i wasnt happy....that it was not a problem just come back and they would take care of me....made it sound like I could test it out and not to worry about cost of replacing it....because i was very hesitant to add something new... Well I had to take it back next day to have the lenses redone because I couldn't tolerate it ...was making me very dizzy....they allowed me to test the lenses at my expense which I would not have agreed to if I had known....he implied it was free of charge but instead he is wanting 90.00 to redo the lenses. He wasn't upfront about the cost. Btw he offered to refund me a small portion of it which was 25.00 if i removed this review after he saw it.... read more

I always leave happier than when I came in... if thats even possible for a visit to the eye doctor. i decided it was time to switch doctors because i wasnt getting the results i wanted (see: http://www.yelp.com/biz/pasadena-optometry-center-pasadena#hrid:1DAv9bqWllUj9cJh2sLX2Q). apparently Dr. Wong worked at my previous optometrist's office, but now hes a one man show. and rightfully so! first, the ladies at the front counter (you'll have to excuse my job title descriptions, theyre horrible) know what theyre doing, and they do it nicely and quickly. i actually felt comfortable sitting thru all the initial eye tests. they always explain everything i need to know, and answer any dumb questions i may have. never snooty and never rude. Dr Wong is awesome! when we talk about my eye health, he doesnt talk down to me because i didnt major in medical science... i actually feel like understand a lot more than i should by the time the exam is done. there arent any stupid eye doctor jokes or uncomfortable small talk. he makes it clear that my eyes are important and what i should do to ensure that it stays that way. ive been back a few times, for both glasses and contacts. both times they were willing to work with what i could afford. ive received plenty of new eye drops and solutions free of charge while my eyes were healing from infections and other painful issues. the service is just better! the employees are helpful and knowledgeable. my insurance (for once) actually covers all my appointments and exams. its located right off a main freeway exit (and my work). and i always leave with goodies. smiley faces all over the place. read more

They have a decent selection of frames (but it could be better). I found 2-3 frames that I liked and chose the cheapest ones. My glasses were ready in 4-5 working days, as expected. Recently, I was looking for a new eye doctor in the Pasadena area for me and my hubby. The thing I didn't like about our previous optometrist office was that when we would go once a year, we were never assigned the same eye doctor. It was a larger optometry office, with at least 20 eye doctors working there. I think that even if you set up an appointment and asked for any one specific eye doctor you liked, you were never guaranteed an appointment with him/her. I mostly hated our old office because it was always a different eye doctor every year. So "bleh" to that. I did some research on Yelp, and discovered Dr. Wong's office on Lake Ave. I spent some time reading other customer reviews about this office, and noted they were mostly positive reviews. I was even more enthralled by the fact that this office was a "one eye doctor only" type office. Exactly what I was looking for. Scheduled an appointment in October for me and my hubby. Since it was an appointment for 2 people, the next available date they had was in November. I would have to wait about one month from the time I called. I did book my appointment on the day I called, and verified with the friendly lady on the phone named Emily that we had VSP. One month later, we were there at Dr. Wong's office on a late Saturday morning. We easily found parking in their lot, shared with another business as well. We walked in, and were greeted by a friendly staff at the counter. We were given paperwork to fill out, and once we were done, only had to wait a bit till we were called. The office is a nice size, not too big and not too small. The waiting area is very tidy and clean, with comfy chairs to sit on while you wait. To the left of the office is where they keep the vast assortment of eyeglasses and sunglasses. They had a pretty nice selection of eyeglasses there. The first 2 routine eye exam checks were done thoroughly by one of Dr. Wong's staff. She was really upbeat and a friendly lady to chat with. After that, she brought me to a waiting room where Dr. Wong would give me a more extensive eye exam and contact lens fitting. Dr. Wong turned out to be a very knowledgeable, courteous, and caring eye doctor. He definitely took his time with my eye exam. I never felt rushed as I did with my previous optometrist office. Dr. Wong patiently answered any questions or inquiries I had. He definitely makes you feel like you are being treated as his valued patient, and not like the next person in line at the DMV, if you know what that is like. Since they only had 3 out of 8 boxes of my contact lenses in stock, one of the nice ladies working there assured me they would give me a call when the last 5 boxes arrived so that I could come by to pick them up the following week. Surely enough, I received a message on my phone the following Tuesday that my contacts had arrived. Now that to me is awesome service! After a few decades here on your planet, I finally sprouted some eye issues. I had some strange eye infection in January (all healed up- I'm good now- and single.) Then In April I scratched my cornea, lord knows how. I went to Dr. Wong both times and within hours, pain, redness and problems were gone. He was extremely knowledgeable, told me what the treatment was going to be, and how long before I was fully recovered. He answered every question I had to my satisfaction. He was 100% accurate with his diagnosis and estimated recovery times. He was very professional and his staff is always polite and friendly. I booked my first appointment at Pasadena Eyecare Optometry about two years ago. The reason I picked this place? Saturday appointments. The office is open from 9-1 on Saturdays - how convenient is that? Though my reason for selecting this optometrist had little to do with actual patient care, the reason I came back was rooted in the great service and attention to detail provided by Dr. Wong and his staff. Prior to moving out to California, I'd only been to one eye doctor. And since I've been wearing glasses since age 8, I was pretty close with my old optometrist back in Connecticut. The office felt comfortable like home and the staff friendly and caring, like family. Frankly, it was an environment that I didn't think could be matched. But Dr. Wong and his staff are GREAT! The office is in a tiny strip mall and from the outside, doesn't look like anything fancy. But once you're inside the place is warm and inviting. I've always had little-to-no wait (though it's so comfortable in there I really wouldn't mind if I had one). And every single member of the staff is so friendly, helpful and nice. Dr. Wong gives a very detailed eye exam, and definitely knows his stuff. He's so nice, too. We spent a little time talking about my soccer and his family - he seems like a genuinely nice dude and is certainly someone I am happy to have as an optometrist (just the second person I've trusted with my eyes in almost 20 years). I also always order my contacts straight from the office. They seem to always have my prescription on hand - usually it's ready for me to pickup in less than a day (although I always wait until Saturday when I can swing by without worrying about missing work). VSP forwarded me to Pasadena Eyecare, which wasn't a problem for me in the slightest, as the foothills are the best kept secret in all of LA in terms of escaping the dilapidation of the majority of the city, and the burdensome crowds. The two gals that work up front (Yesenia and another who's name escapes me) are very sweet and helpful. Most offices throw paperwork at you and fill the atmosphere with negativity, however this is far from the case here. Everyone is very chatty and pleasant. On to the exam itself. Dr. Grace Wong is very nice, silly and eager to help in any way possible. She is an excellent listener and quite knowledgeable in her arena (thank God). The tests are very basic and virtually the same here however they offer a new eye scan that eliminates the need to dilate your eyes...EPIC! I'd been looking for a new optometrist and eyeglasses source for over a year, after unsatisfying experiences with two local options (one a chain, one not). I'm so very glad that I chose to check out Pasadena Eyecare. The entire staff is friendly and professional -- there was no pressure to opt into additional recommended tests or glasses options/upgrades. I particularly appreciated the exam by Dr. Grace Wong. She's extremely patient, friendly and kind, with an exceptional ability (and desire!) to explain, in detail, the various findings of that day's tests. The exam didn't feel hurried -- Dr. Wong spent a lot of time answering my many questions. My eyesight had changed very little from what my current glasses addressed -- she made it clear I could continue without new prescription glasses at the time or get a pair made and use the old glasses as a spare set since I had good insurance coverage. It was up to me. Again: no pressure! There were a good number of glasses brands to choose from, and I was pointed to the ones my plan covered and was told exactly how much of the cost would be mine to cover, which helped me not waste time trying on brands outside my budget. I just had to review this wonderful place to get your eyes checked. I made an appointment for my husband based on reviews I read on this site. Was I pleased to find they were all right on target. As soon as the paperwork were completed my husband was soon called to be seen. I also go to an optometrist in Glendale where the wait is usually around 30 minutes or longer. I'm seriously thinking on switching doctors. My husband was very pleased with Dr. Wong. He liked that he explained the process of the examination to him. Just had my first visit here today and it was great! I moved from the Bay Area last April where I would go to UC Berkeley Morgan Meredith Eye Center for years (since i was in grade school, I am now 34). When I arrived they took my previous prescription that was a year old, my insurance card and handed my a few forms to fill out while I was checked in. I got seen right away and everyone was so nice. I saw Dr. Wong and she was great at explaining what she saw in my eyes and what kind of contact I could get. She broke down my cost of current contacts that are worn for two weeks vs. a contact I can wear monthly. They didn't have my new prescription for a trial pair but were ordering it today and contacting me when they come in by the end of the week. She didnt want me to order something new and have them not fit properly. They informed me of what the cost would be just for my exam and then the cost for my eyes to be dilated and fitted for contacts. I proceeded with the full exam since the last time I had dilation done was almost 1.5 years ago. I got home and my aunt was visiting and she said she was just looking for a new optometrist. I wanted to wait until the end of my annual contact with the center before I write my review...so here it is. The staff and Dr. Wong are courteous, and the doctor made me feel comfortable and did not rush through the visits. The receptionist did not schedule my first visit appropriately, but I was still able to keep that appointment. My visits are all during the week-day and unless they said that I might have to wait (about 15-20 minutes), I was seen almost instantly. When I called to re-schedule, they did not charge me. Also they gave me a copy of my presciption (for both glasses and contact lenses). I decided to order my contact lenses online because it's about 30% cheaper than ordering through the office. They did not have a lot of selections on eye glasses, and since they don't have a lab on-site, getting a pair is more expensive. Overall, for someone such as myself who works in a medical clinic, I enjoyed being a patient there for your routine visits. If I still live in the area next year, I would go back to them for my annual check-up. read more

Great! I went in for my appointment, lots of parking, looked like no one else was in there! they have a little room of glasses if you want to order straight from them. I was taken into a side area where they made me look at pictures of white picket fences in a big machine (was it scanning my eyeballs?) I'm not sure was it did, but nothing was uncomfortable! The doc came after a while in the room, I read all his certificates and diplomas by then ahaha. He seems well qualified, from UC Irvine i think. The room was long and had strange mirror placements but it was okay :) The usual test, reading the chart, the yellow eye drops etc. I found out i have a slight astigmatism, and he had no problem asking his assistance to give me my PD reading so I could order glasses online. They didn't tell me that the prescription wouldn't be the same for contacts (which I also order online). When I called back 2 days later, they said I'd have to come back for a separate contact fitting, another $70... I guess I just assumed they'd do it with the exam, since my old doctor did. over all, nice place, nice doc. read more

I was hoping this would be the year for Lasik, so I made an appointment with Dr. Mike Wong to do my regular visit and my Lasik visit. This office felt a little different then the eye doctors I've been to before. All the other offices I've been to are setup with a large open floor full of frames. The exam rooms usually tucked behind/to the side of the front desk. Here though it is more like a traditional office. You sit in a small waiting room and you are then taken back to the exam rooms. The only downside I saw to this was that you couldn't peruse new frames on your leisure. The exam itself went very well. Dr. Wong took his time to talk to me about everything, explained all the tests and their results thoroughly, and generally had a great beside manner. He also was a great help with my lasik consult. Sadly my eyes changed again this year, so I am not eligible. However the change the was small, and he said that I could come back in 6 months for a free lasik evaluation to see if my eyes had changed again. I really appreciated that he took the time to explain to me why I could go forward with lasik now, but that it wouldn't be a good idea. It made it clear to me that he cares about his patients. I think the only thing that slightly bugged me was the lack of help with frames and the such. I'm used to getting my new prescription at my old places they have someone talk to you and show you frames. I also got a paper copy from my old place for my prescription, which expedites the ordering process on 1800 contacts. They might have a frame process here, but I didn't get a chance to check it out. I moved to the SGV area a little over a year ago and I needed to find a new eye doc (I desperately needed to update my eyeglass prescription...). I decided to visit Dr. Wong after reading yelp reviews, and am so glad I did! Dr. Wong is super nice, friendly, knowledgable, and flexible when I experienced a few issues. I ended up needing to come back and try a few trial lenses for astigmatism, and then one box I bought ended up having a manufacturers issue where the contacts inside were causing my eye intense irritation. The whole office worked with me to make sure I was taken care of promptly, the contacts were exchanged, and the issue was resolved! It was always easy to book an appointment that worked for me and I never waited long to be seen. Would highly recommend this office to anyone in the market for a new eye doc :) read more

I had an eye infection from surfing 2 days before and I thought I was going to lose my eyess it was all blurry and painful. Dr. Wong helped me out and gave me some eye drops that fixed it up that day. I had to pay out of pocket because my insurance didn't kick in until a week later. Saw Dr. Mike and he was very patient and kind, and he asked if there were any questions about anything at all after the exam, and he really took the time to answer all questions and not just rush you out the door after the exam is over. I saw Dr. Grace for three times in a three week span. She is amazing, very knowledgeable and very patient with me. It really helps that she speaks some Mandarin- even though I am fluent in English I still needed some terminologies to be explained in Mandarin Chinese. I got a very comprehensive eye exam which is covered by insurance with a $10 co-pay (VSP). She then scheduled me for a pupil dilation exam to look at the back of my eyes and a contact lens fitting because I need to get new prescription for contacts. Even though it was during the holiday season they still managed to squeeze me in. I really like that they send email and text message reminders the day before the appointment. A couple of times what they were busy I still only had to wait until five minutes after the appointment time, which is no problem at all. All the staffs there were accommodating and super nice. They explained my insurance benefits to me in detail and were very transparent with the pricing. As long as I still live in the LA area next year I will go back! read more

After moving to Pasadena, I searched around for an optometrist with good reviews. Since Pasadena Eyecare was nearby, I thought Id give it a try. Yelp did not lead me astray -- this is the best eye care I've ever had. Dr.'s Grace & Mike have both been great with my contact needs. As I am a pilot I want to be certain both my vision is good and I'm following FAA medical rules, and both Dr's have listened to my concerns. Never had to wait more than 10min for a scheduled appointment and often am out in 45min. read more
