My boyfriend surprised me with a tour of Pasados for Valentine's day and I was super excited because I love animals and supporting organisations that care for them. Our tour guide Maddie was super knowledgeable and was able to tell us how every animal came to the sanctuary. She was super upbeat and articulate in a way that showed deep care for the animals. The tour is a lot of hills and I appreciate that they provided a golf cart for the people in our tour group with limited mobility. In every aspect of our experience it seemed Pasado's put accessibility first. But the tour itself is so heartbreaking. The first thing my boyfriend said when we got back to our car is that this is the most depressing animal sanctuary experience he's ever had. And I agree, it was hard to stay upbeat and have a cute romantic experience while our tour guide essentially described horrific cases of animal cruelty for two hours. I learned so many great things on the tour and I'd definitely love to come back here to adopt a cat or volunteer. I just think it definitely wasn't the romantic Valentine's day experience we were looking for. read more

Pasados "sanctuary" and vet team has had a lot of turn over and unfortunately leaving unqualified individuals caring for farmed animals. Recently the vet team allowed four day old baby goats and sheep to be dehorned, a practice that is known to have severe complications and is completely unnecessary. We can compare it to declawing a cat. There are meat eaters running this "sanctuary." May I ask would you hire a dog eater to care for your dog? read more

Another wonderful animal sanctuary! Good variety of cooking classes, and we left with wonderful, healthy recipes to try at home. The goats are so sweet! Gift shop items are a little pricey, but it is for a good cause. There was plenty of parking when we got there. They have compost in addition to the trash and recycle bins which is great! One thing I might suggest changing is making the restrooms fragrance free so more people can experience the sanctuary. Their directions in their email were very helpful and easy to understand. We just took a vegan cooking class here and had a lot of fun. This is not a restaurant but they have plenty of cooking classes and one that jumped out to us was a vegan cheese class. They did four types including cheesecake, Mac and cheese, a cheese spread, and a nacho cheese. All of them were good and it's always nice to know how to make them on your own especially since cheese trends to be a hand thing to give up when people transition to eating more ethicaly. While I don't write reviews much, I felt like what I experienced might help balance some of the other reviews here because when I was ready to take my dog here I happened to look them up on Yelp. It made me suddenly nervous unnecessarily. My first interaction was via email. The office staff was very helpful in getting my dog placed in an appointment for a mobile neuter clinic when the online form didn't function properly for fitting my dog's size to the kennels available. One negative review mentioned that you need to be prepared to stand in the rain. Well, yes, you do. And the info email I received warned me about that and suggesting I bring an umbrella. My friend used to say we spend either time or money. If we get a good deal, we usually spend time. If we don't want to invest that time, we spend money. In this case, for people like our family who don't have the money to spend, it is somewhat of a given that you're going to invest time. This is pretty standard for low cost clinics. This isn't Pasado's fault and doesn't deserve a negative rating. Pasado's staff at the mobile clinic was well organized and efficient. The gal in charge was polite and friendly while not wasting time. Yes, we did stand a bit. We also chatted amongst ourselves about animal experiences. We saw cute little puppies whose mama was there for a last litter spay. And the staff did a great job of letting us know when we were free to go back to wait in our vehicles for a few minutes until we were called back while they organized the next step. When they loaded the dogs, each dog was brought one at a time. A second leash was added so the dog transferred hands with two leashes on. If the dog was unsure, the owner was asked to lead the way into the truck so the dog could follow and the owner stayed in as the dog was placed in the kennel. The door was closed each time a dog was lead in before loading into the kennels. This process was repeated with every animal so you can see it would take a bit to load them all. I saw nothing today that lent toward negligence in the safe handling of the dogs. Quite the contrary. They did their best to keep the dogs safe and secure both physically and mentally. One of the first dogs loaded today was a young, high strung lab who was barking incessantly. I was concerned because with that kind of anxiety or excitement, it can create a lot of stress for other animals. My dog doesn't do well around that kind of barking. The staff continued the boarding process but before they got to my dog, they had already determined that for all the animals involved, a mild sedative would need to be administered to help the lab calm down. They even caught the owner in the parking lot to let him know the situation, although they didn't have to do that because when you sign consent to treat, you sign consent to treat. So again, that took a bit of time. But if it was my dog, I'd have appreciated knowing they didn't leave him in there in a state of stress. On picking up the dogs, (which, incidentally was right on the minute they asked us to be there) yes, the staff did repeat a touch of the recovery instructions that had been handed out but no, they didn't treat us like idiots. Mainly, the staff went over the pain med instructions and cleanliness instructions. But here is one reason this needs to be repeated individually. Individuals have individual circumstances. Today, the paperwork said to keep my dog calm and quiet for 10 days indoors. My dog hasn't been calm and quiet since the day he came home to us! He's a higher than high energy dog. He also hasn't been able to figure out potty training at all so hasn't been allowed throughout the house. So I needed specific attention from someone knowledgable to know how to handle the specifics of our situation. The whole process did take time. But if you need a low cost option, this is an excellent choice. Oh. And my dog's sutures look great. read more

They are doing their best to keep this out of the public eye but that is unacceptable. We won't stop asking until we get answers. I fell in love with a kitten at an adoption event, immediately put in my paperwork to adopt her. The volunteers told me that after a home inspection, the kitten would be mine within a week. Then the runaround began. The adoption coordinator told me wait and be patient because the kitten wasn't ready to be adopted. After continually following up for the last 3 months, I just found her listed up for adoption with not one word to me. When I reached out, I was told that I would not have the opportunity to be considered to adopt her. I asked my vet for advice, she advised to not work with Pasado. I won't share her comments, check with your own vet, but it says a lot to me when my cat doctor says to stay away from an animal shelter. read more

I have waited quite a while to write this review and then realized I am selfish for hesitating as animals shouldn't have to suffer the way my poor dog did and I have the responsibility to warn others. We utilized Pasado's Spay Station to fix our female dog who we rescued right as she went into her first heat--being that she had already been abused, we didn't feel an unwanted pregnancy would benefit anyone plus there are so many uncared for animals in the world as it is. Anyway, the day itself went smoothly and exactly how they said it would on their website. When I picked my dog up she had fecal matter smeared on her and was crying and whining in the most pitiful way. The crying went on for longer than I would have expected so I took her to a vet to be checked out (as previous people have stated nobody answers the phone when you call pasados, even the number they gave out at the spay station). To make a long and very emotionally draining story short-- 5 days of worrying, a major surgery for my already traumatized pup, a long recovery and $5,000 later...my dog recovered from Pasado's completely botched procedure. Now granted, after the vet who did the second surgery called and asked the Pasados vet wtf they did, they paid for the surgery, however this didn't cover the costs of X-rays, ultrasounds, lab work, and visits that were done. Bottom line-- save your money and have your animal fixed in a real facility. Your pet should be a family member and I am embarrassed and ashamed that we utilized this service for our dog. read more

When I read the reviews I was taken by surprise, then I looked at the dates and noticed that most of these horrible reviews were from 2 years ago. My experience was quite different so if these were true I can assure you this is not the case in present time. To make a long story short I recently started fostering a Foxhound from Pasado's. Chuck was one of 72 Foxhounds that were rescued partly from Pasado's. These dogs lived in terrible conditions and were neglected and abused. Chuck will never be a "normal" dog but I'm sure going to work with him and make him the best he can be. Pasado's has spent thousands of $$$ rehabing these dogs so that they can be placed in home. If you have ever been there the place is huge with so many different animals all from different situations. It probably cost a fortune to keep things up. To give you an idea of how much these people care, for me to take Chuck home it wasn't as easy as going in talking a couple hours and walking out with a dog. It took about a month for the process to go through. First off I was interviewed and they explained what I was getting into. Then I was introduced to Chuck and I came to visit several times so he would get used to me. Pasado's came to my home and did an inspection to make sure Chuck would be safe at my home. The day of arrival to my home Chuck was checked by the vet once more and lightly sedated so he could make the trip to my home. They provided me with food, 2 kennels, a harness, and collar. They never once asked for any $$ from me. They were so happy that I was opening my home to him. I have personal cell phone numbers that I can call at anytime if I have a problem or question. This hardly sounds like an organization that doesn't care for animals and are using funds inappropriately. As for Rio, I can't answer to what happened and why. But I can tell you that there is always two sides to a story. Unfortunately, there are people out there that stretch the truth to make the story more shocking. And I would never listen to what an unhappy employee or volunteer has to say. Maybe Pasado's was cleaning house and decided that some people no longer fit in with the program. In closing I highly respect the people at Pasado's and what they stand for. I'm so happy to have Chuck at our home. Please consider adopting your next pet from them you won't be sorry. I started following Pasado's Safe Haven on Facebook several months ago. Because of my affection for animals, my long-time interest in animal welfare, and my admiration for what I could see of their work, when I began looking into new volunteer opportunities, it was natural that they would make the short list. The same day I applied online to volunteer, I found an announcement about an upcoming sanctuary tour and immediately registered, thinking even if I wasn't selected as a volunteer, I would love to see the work they're doing in person. I didn't check their reviews here until the day before the event (unusual for me), and for obvious reasons, even with their 4-star rating, my stomach sank. Some of these reviews aren't just negative, but positively *scathing*. All the positive reviews and the age (and in some cases, quality) of the negative ones helped a bit; if the organization had gone through a dark period, it seemed, at least, that it was back on track. Still, I was concerned... and glad that I'd registered for the tour before I heard back regarding my application. The verdict? I could gush on this for awhile (and I did to my family... for two days straight), but in a nutshell: I spent 2 1/2 hours moving about a beautiful, well-tended property, falling in love with a community of healthy, lovable, and very, very lucky creatures, and talking with a remarkably informed, articulate, compassionate group of staff and volunteers that any similar organization would give their eye teeth for -- and that I'm now so excited to know and work with (yep!) I could positively *squeal*. (Well of *course* pun intended. Don't judge. You know it was there.) It bears mentioning that I was particularly impressed by the way staff and volunteers at PSH educated visitors about the conditions that exist for animals raised in the meat and dairy industries, and the impact of our consumption of meat and dairy products. Each in her own way, caregivers for the different animals addressed these topics with evident passion and with candor, but with humility and diplomacy, as well. No one could leave the sanctuary without something to contemplate, but no one will leave feeling demonized for not (yet, at least) sharing the organization's values and views. If you tour, you'll leave having had a relaxing time among good people and sweet animals... with a little more knowledge than you had when you arrived. *That's* how you forge new and unlikely alliances and keep the welfare of animals at the fore; *that's* how you contribute to the progress of a cause to which you've devoted yourself. Kudos to Executive Director Laura Henderson and her team for making it happen. Let's sum it up. Fantastic place, lovely people, a great way to spend a few leisurely hours on a Saturday loving on animals and learning how to make a difference in their world. Also (and this is important because we love food) the end-of-tour-lunch is a little yum-fest. Register for a tour, grab your comfy boots and the kids (and the kid inside -- trust me), and go. I WASTED my time trying to take my dog to get spayed. I showed up 2 mins late EVEN THOUGH I had an appointment and told me I had to RESCHEDULE. The spray station gave me some excuse that they were too booked to get her spayed. When I tried to call to reschedule, the phone was disconnected. TERRIBLE service and TERRIBLE appointment booking. I wouldn't recommend this service to anyone. Just go to pets mart and pay a little more for better customer service and better appointments. I would give 0 stars if I could. read more

We went at 7:45 in the morning on Saturday and had three kittens spayed/neutered, given vaccines, flea treatments, and microchipped. I walked out paying $130 for the services. When you call around vets a regular kitten package for 1 kitten is usually over $200 around the tune of $225-$250 and doesn't include spaying or neutering services and microchips. Needless to say this saved us hundreds of dollars using Pasado's Safe Haven. We were never expecting to have three kittens in our lives. We had rescued a kitten from the side of the road in Kansas over the summer named Quincy (white/orange tiger kitten). We paid hundreds into a kitten package that didn't include a microchip. On Halloween he got startled and ran outside. We never saw him again. We looked for weeks but finally we found an ad online for some kittens in a barn who needed a warm home in the winter. We took them all in and our daughter fell in love with all three of the kittens, thus, we kept all three. Pasado's allowed us to keep all three and fully vet them in our budget. It was a wonderful experience. Our kittens did great too and their surgeries went well. Within an hour or two after coming home they were all three back to playing! Now they are microchipped too so they have a better chance if they do get lost. I can understand reviews about the charity's use of money and funds. On Charity Navigator Pasado's is listed with over 18% of their profits going to admin fees and over $100,000 a year going to the CEO alone for FY '12. It is at 79% of their revenue going back out while that isn't bad it isn't the greatest either. It looks like they did improve since some of the older reviews came in. I don't know where else I would have taken these kittens to get shots and fixed but I am glad that someone was there to help with the costs to fix the kittens and the cheaper costs for shots and microchipping. Hopefully, in the future Pasado can migrate funds from the CEO and admins into more help for the animals in the community. Thank you though for what you do, do. read more

I attended Pasado's Safe Haven farm tour on August 22 and was very impressed. The volunteers were very friendly and shared each animal's story with us. We toured the entire farm, which was beautiful. All of the animals seemed very happy and had plenty of room to roam and play. At the end of the tour we were treated to a vegan lunch. It was one of the best days I've had in awhile and I want to go back again to spend more time with the animals. read more

I rescued a mother cat and kittens from the emergency vet I worked for, and because I'm a vet tech and make sadface wages, I needed access to low cost spay/neuter services. Everything went well with the drop off, surgery, and discharge process. Bonus-the cats all had teeny tiny incisions-much smaller than my cats fixed at my regular vet. Healing was also much faster. This is such an invaluable service for low income clients and their pets. The staff are professional, patient and take their time to answer questions. You can tell they are dedicated to the mission of spaying and neutering to save lives and reduce euthanasia in the shelters. They treat everyone with respect and are gentle and kind with the animals. I found a stray male kitty who was in desperate need of a home. Before finding him a home I wanted to make sure he was neutered (in case the new owner decided not to for some reason). I brought him here and they neutered him at the lowest and fair price imaginable. They even offer vaccines and dewormers. It was extremely helpful, especially because I wasn't going to be giving this little man a forever home, so I really appreciated the fair prices. They were very compassionate and helpful towards me, and I didn't encounter any problems with the experience. read more

She was a completely nasty jerk for no reason when I questioned why my elderly neighbor's pregnant cat was turned away due to limited space even though the website states pregnant animals TAKE PRIORITY. She was disgustingly rude for no reason. "I know your cat is pregnant. I saw it on the card. I told you there was no room. Two days now and I have heard nothing back. You shouldn't have to harass people to adopt a pet.. Low cost spay neuter mobile clinic. Free for low income owners or $35 for male cat. Be prepared, it takes forever as you wait in the rain. Almost 2 hours for the dropoff in the morning and at least another hour tpick your pet back up. Seems like a good idea, but just make sure you don't have anything else to do.The staff treats everyone like idiots and repeats the aftercare directions over and over even though you already have a printed handout. Not only does the "bus" have great techs and assistants, but they have a doctor who's heart and mind is dedicated to providing excellent care. The group does great work at prices anyone can afford.
