Inn At 835 - Delphinium Room

    Inn At 835

    $$$

I want to start with a couple of warnings to would-be customers of Inn at 835, then I'll move on to…read morepraise. FYI I was in the Delphinium Room. First, and most importantly, if you or someone you are traveling with is elderly or has limited mobility, please double check the room you've been assigned to. When I was getting in and out of the shower/jacuzzi tub combo, it occurred to me how difficult the leap over the edge into a slick tub would be for someone my father's age. (I did use and REALLY enjoy the jacuzzi, and the attached shower was fine, but it's something to note.) Also, shower before 8:30 if you want any hot water! Second, if you're going to Springfield for work and will need stable and strong WiFi, this is NOT the hotel for you. I was just trying to check email and could barely get enough signal to do that. The signal didn't seem to be any better in the cafe area downstairs. Third, if you need a hairdryer, be sure to bring your own. They don't have them in the rooms. Now, on to the positives! What a cute little hotel this was. Parking was easy and free. There was hot breakfast available, which I didn't try due to time constraints. But there were bagels (only blueberry, weirdly enough) and muffins and toast. Also, the coffee was fantastic! The room was clean enough, but I did notice some small crumbs on the rug when I arrived. There were a couple of holes in the sheets, but the sheets were certainly clean and the bed was comfy! There are some great little touches at this inn, such as the warm cookies that arrive each evening and the modest little happy hour in the afternoons. I would absolutely stay here again--it was unlike anywhere I've stayed before. And it was the perfect spot for touring around the Lincoln stuff and the Dana House and so forth.

Unfortunately the many positives (large interesting historic building, informed and personal staff,…read morewalkable area, extra touches like warm cookies) were overshadowed by one LARGE fail. BEDBUG bites after our stay. Despite convincing photographic evidence and a medical diagnosis the management denied the possibility, claimed pest control found no evidence, and dismissed our complaints. We are sadly still taking measures to ensure our homes do not get infested.

This is by no means a luxury hotel, but we weren't looking for that-we needed a clean place to spend the night, and this was EXACTLY what we were looking for! The staff is wonderfully sweet and kind and helpful too- would definitely stay here again as well as recommend it to anyone staying in the area on a budget!!

I genuinely do not understand how this hotel has such positive reviews. The photos online were…read moreextremely misleading compared to the actual condition of the room. Upon entering the room, I was immediately met with an unpleasant odor. As I started looking around, things only got worse. The bathtub in the bathroom was visibly dirty, the walls throughout the room had stains all over them, and there were crumbs left on the floor that made it obvious the room was not cleaned properly before my arrival. What really shocked me was how neglected certain areas were. Under the bed looked like it had not been cleaned in a very long time, and the area around the AC unit was covered in buildup and dirt to the point where it seemed like nobody had touched it for months. Even the mini fridge was an issue because the door would barely stay closed. For the price paid and the way this hotel presents itself online, this experience was beyond disappointing. I booked this hotel based on the reviews and photos, and I honestly feel misled. I normally do not leave negative reviews, but people deserve to know what they are actually walking into before spending their money here.

Rippon Kinsella House - Flat itchy towels probably procured when the Rippon Kinsella was built...?

My fiance and I took a relaxing getaway trip to Springfield over the weekend. Springfield was…read morewonderful and staying at the Rippon-Kinsella was icing on the cake! When we arrived Roger, the innkeeper, was gardening in the yard, which is beautiful with large trees, lots of flowers, a brick patio, and a little fountain. He quickly stopped what he was doing and gave us a tour of the house, showed us to our room, and brought us each a cold drink. Over the weekend, we got to chat with Roger and his partner Dave during breakfast. We even ran into them at another property they own, which they graciously gave us a tour of. Now onto the first "B" for "bed" My fiance's not into the "antique" and "victorian charm" style that I love, but even he had to agree that the house was beautiful, comfortable, and clean. We stayed in the Captain's Quarters which was spacious, decorated in a nautical theme, with lots of natural sunlight. The queen-sized bed was comfortable and the linens are super soft, I slept like a baby! Now onto the second 'B', breakfast! Roger is a great cook and he served us a delicious and filling breakfast each morning. We had pancakes with scrambled eggs one day and a biscuit with cheese omelet the next, both were accompanied by cinnamon raisin cake/muffin, yogurt parfait, sausages, and plenty of fresh fruit. The house itself is in a beautiful and quiet treelined neighborhood and conveniently located. Common areas include a den with a mini library and bar, living room, dining room, a large wraparound porch, and a foyer with a piano. It's walking distance from Lincoln's Tomb and the War Memorials, and only a short drive from downtown Springfield (Lincoln sites & museum, Frank Lloyd Wright's Dana-Thomas House, etc.). The Rippon-Kinsella is a true labor of love for Roger and Dave and they were wonderful hosts!

Whether you are lucky enough to eat breakfast on the charming verandah or the atmospheric dining room Roger will ensure that you leave for the day's sightseeing with a full stomach and his partner Dave is a source of excellent local information. My first room was clean and the front desk even called to make sure everything was okay (nice touch). The downside was the temperature. The room was uncomfortably warm, and after hours of trying to cool it down, I finally asked the front desk. They immediately moved me to a Jr. Suite to make up for it--which I really appreciated. The suite was spacious and had a microwave, but no fridge (even though there was an empty space clearly meant for one). My first room had neither, so keep that in mind if you're traveling with leftovers or snacks. The AC in the suite seemed better at first, but the room had a weird smell and by the middle of the night, it was back to being too warm no matter how low I set it. On the plus side, the bed and pillows were really comfortable, and the location is close to everything you'd want. On the downside, the "continental breakfast" was basically nonexistent, so definitely don't book this place for that. Overall, I'd maybe stay again if the AC issue gets fixed, because the staff and location do make up for a lot.

Anti-Black manager - hotel's comments claiming, "I was yeling" caused me to lose a job. Refused to…read morede-escalate. -Edited to address the manager's response to my initial posting. Manager claims they tried to assist me professionally. Yet, threatened to call the police because my voice got slightly loud? There was an entire lobby full of people I work with. The way you behaved, they really thought I was the initiator, but your video shows exactly what happened. Being a business I hope you are able to show why I'm false. Just because you make a claim doesn't mean it is an accurate depiction of events as they have enfolded in real time. Manager is not explaining how when he made this assertion I began whispering. He refused to continue speaking with me. After 1 perceived slight. The manager who couldn't be bothered to give me his name dismissed me. Sir, please note I am being detailed in effort for you to retract your statement to my former employer, since you are listed as a reason for the damage I'm going to experience from the lack of income. I want you to be advised I intend to use anything you say as proof of your campaign to defame me by not correcting yourself through the proper channels. This wasn't just a bad experience it was life changing for me. Does Aarti know you're making these bad decisions? Video shows manager coralling me to an area away from the front desk. I have 3 bags with me at this time. Manager had created this situation where it would be difficult for me to complete any request he made. With 3 bags and the hotel's key card in my possession, how is it possible to leave quickly? The manager could address the content of this message point by point, but since they don't appreciate the people trying to give them business, they're going to post some auto-generated response that absolutely disregards the events that occured, as they occured, and why they occured. You are new at this. You should love that people are trying to embrace you. I even know some Hindi. The other woman at least recognized that I was extending to her goodwill. Sir, you and your other teammate don't have her friendliness. She is someone who can do this work. You and the other person treat people like you yourself are so frightened. Whatever it is that you are feeling. It's not normal for this work. This is not something that anyone can control. That's why it's so baffaling that you think you need to "do" so much! Hope Aarti Patel is happy with how much money you are going to lose for him manager. Guess who gives money to Aarti manager? People like me. A 2.1 star rating on Yelp is pretty bad news. Your real job is to help Aarti Patel make money. All the dumb stuff you're doing is absolutely worthless. You should try engaging with your guests. Some would stay with you for decades. Yet you don't realize how to illicit this type of loyalty. Evernell does. People would book rooms just to hear her voice in the morning. That's how it really works. You should 100% step aside and let Evernell save this place for you. The woman who works the night shift occasionally actually is an accountant. Cheap labor makes cheap things. This place is in an excellent location. Owners of this hotel have obviously relied on that fact instead of putting money into it. Right owners this thing becomes Wonder Bread. Unfortunately, it's just another pop-up sucking some dollars out of people. Threating black staff, black guests, and doing fine! Sorry Evernell for them trying to bully you every day. That's what is normal I guess. - End Edit Evernell was amazing! The manager and staff working from 6-11 are absolutely irritating. Need a key card? Expect to also deal with check out. Question about nearest store, pharmacy, hospital? Expect blank stares and questions about check out, or something else you didn't ask about. I seriously thought they are using slave labor. Tried to express my frustration about not having requests acknowledged to the manager. As I explained my feelings on the several days of interacting with his staffer, he interrupted me to ask my room number. I ask him to please allow me to finish my statement. Because I'm a Black, when my voice modulated upwards. He immediately says I'm yelling. Tells me to leave the establishment. He threatened me with the POLICE. This was a ploy to direct the narrative. He then corraled me away from the front desk and into an adjacent sitting area. Since I was checking out, I had my bags. Me and my bags. We are navigating this and the manager thinks this is acceptable? The manager is running some type of campaign against Evernell who is beloved by all guests. Multiple people spoke about how her helpfulness and usefulness.

Everything worked great and we had no problem with noise or anyone else on our floor. We got the kind suite which included the king side bed and a full pull out couch (sleeps 4). There were only two issues we had while we stayed there. 1 - I booked a room for 3 people and they didn't leave pillows or blankets for the pull out couch there. A few calls and several hours later we were told to come down to get a blanket but they were out of pillows (they were supposed to bring it up to our room originally). 2 - the breakfast food isn't really restocked and every day we went there was a low quantity of everything. Luckily we didn't need much because girls didn't want to eat heavy and I was snacking most of the day at the BOS center, but it would've been nice for guests not to just wait around for stuff. The kitchen is also super small where everything was. Overall I'd say we had a great stay and the good outweighed the bad. I felt safe there and that was what I was most worried about. Parking was also super close.

The Springfield Hilton Garden Inn is not a luxury hotel by any means but it held its own as a nice budget friendly option. Free coffee downstairs in the morning, a fitness room with old but serviceable equipment, a pool if you were looking for that, and a six-day a week restaurant if you wanted to eat in. So the Springfield Garden Inn had everything we needed. If they wanted to change it up vis-a-vis the competition, they should consider converting the full service restaurant into a free continental breakfast place ... that would set them apart. But all in all we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
