    Fruit Tart

So eager to try this bakery around the corner from our hotel in Lisbon, but it was closed or super crowded every time. Finally had the chance and all the choices looked so tasty. Decided in the fruit test, which wasn't really sweet, which may be more of a Portuguese way of baking, since other pastries weren't sweet either.

First class pastry place in Lisbon. We were dazzled by the many choices and got carried away and ordered five best sellers. If we had room in our stomachs, we would have tried every single one of them. They all looked so appealing. The were all fresh and delicious! I highly recommend.

Popped in here for a quick coffee and pastry after walking in hilly Lisbon all morning. Service was quick and the pastry was delicious!

Really good pastries. So beautifully made and incredibly tasty. If you walk past this shop, I think it's a must to try something. Everything we sampled was delicious and very unique. They can package it up to go or you can eat it there.

Established in 1957 Pastelaria Alcôa takes a more in-depth approach to baking than many of its competitors in Lisbon, a focus on the Cistercian monks of Sta. Maria de Alcobaça and Cós yielding several items not seen elsewhere. Well-regarded across multiple locations, self-proclaimed "Masters in Conventual Sweets" suggesting premium prices at the small storefront on Rua Garrett, customer service is far less cordial than at Santo António or Mexicana while the Pastel de Nata is not nearly so flaky or delicate. Producing mostly products built around Egg Yolks, the Pampilho offering a soggy sponge swirled with Custard, better bites included a Sugar-shellacked Palmier and Almond-based Tart, though the only real standout was a "Torrao Real" that eats like Castanha Ovo beneath shards of crystalized Caramel.

The decor of Pastelaria Alcôa is classical and elegant, the display of their desserts and pastries is beautiful like art gallery. Most of their dessert were rewarded and simply made by egg or egg yolk which tasted similar to some traditional pastries in Taiwan. We had Coroa De Abadessa, the rewarded pastries in 2017, and the dessert was extremely delicate and we tried to cut it carefully but failed. It was also delicious with unique little salty and sweet taste.

I wandered into this bakery, after visiting, Bertrand, the oldest operating bookstore in the world. It's literally a just a few doors away, on the same side of the street. Simply put, this is a very attractive bakery with some really unique desserts, most of which I've never seen, but is what lured me inside. Of course, they have the omnipresent egg tarts, but there are so many other interesting dessert options. I got a little round orange ball with white paper wrapped around it. When I started peeling off the paper, the clerk told me that the paper was edible. I thought the young kid was kidding, but he ensured me he was telling me the truth. Lo and behold, the paper started dissolving on my tongue, as it was apparently made from sugar. I can't recall what it was labeled as, but it was just the little sweet pick me up I needed after lunch. (As Hubby parked himself at a coffee shop after our lunch so I could go shopping, I went "dessert shopping" instead). Not much seating, so most people just stand at the counters to enjoy their treats, but this place truly has some beautifully presented delectables.

You have to have super sweet tooth to enjoy the pastries here. Admittedly I am one, and this still borderlines on very, very sweet for me. Needless to say, my husband who likes to joke that his dentist pulled out his sweet tooth along with his wisdom teeth, was totally disappointed with his nata tart. Like most, we were drawn into the store while walking along Rua Garrett by the lovingly displayed cornucopia stand and the palatial interior. The desserts all look divine, meticulously crafted. Many of them were traditionally made in convents. Everything looks so attractive it's hard to pick one. I couldn't resist trying the Coroa da Abadessa, crown of the abbess. It's a dessert made with almond, hazelnut, egg and a ton of sugar and covered in a glittery nest of spun sugar. My complain is that there are only two little counter for you to eat standing up. We got our desserts and coffee (you can't quite skip the coffee when eating something so sweet and heavy) but there was nowhere for us to put them down. A kind couple let us squeezed in to share the space, but really, such beautiful dessert deserves to be eaten properly, sitting down and leisurely bite by bite.

Cute shop filled with so many egg and almond pastries! I highly recommend just grabbing a few that look good and doing your own little taste test. I think everything is a little on the sweeter side, but it wasn't a problem for me. Toucinho do Ceu - Almond cake made from pork lard. Really good. It was what was what was recommend to get here. Nata - Classic nata taste!

Clean and modern bakery with friendly service and beautifully presented pastries...but wow, the desserts here are very, very sweet. I made the mistake of sharing two desserts when I think ordering one would have been more than enough for two people. I tried their signature Cornucópia (recommended as Alcoa's most popular dessert), which is a light pastry cone with a custard-like filling made of egg yolk and sugar. I also tried their pumpkin paste cake and it had a very similar flavor to the Cornucópia filling, with just a thicker texture and a hint of pumpkin. Both were enjoyable, but super sweet. I was definitely was on a sugar high afterwards.

Pastel de nata ao yummy!! Abadessa dessert is to die for

Everything was absolutely delicious!!! I had the abadessa dessert and I am still dreaming with it. Totally grateful that I found this place

My custardy haul for the night. About 12 Euro for my selection, but the splurge was worth it

Pastelaria Alcoa was okay. The natas were decent, and their award winning and popular almond-based pastries may not have fit my taste buds.

That is exactly the "good" problem Landeau has as besides their famous chocolate cake, all they have are beverages, inadvertently making their sign outside with the proclamation "When in doubt, try chocolate cake!" kind of hilarious. Once you've huffed and puffed your way up one of Lisbon's stairmaster hills, the darkened and vintage feeling interior of this particular Landeau feels very welcome. Although there is ample seating for the size of this store, the ample line of people waiting to get in from the outside might make getting a seat difficult nonetheless. I do like the regular lattes here but let's face it, any beverage you get here is really meant to be a sidekick to the main star of the show, Landeau's famous chocolate cake. And it is indeed, the best slice of chocolate cake you'll ever have, and that is not hyperbole. Layered and textured, but pillowy and light, it's really difficult to describe what a beautiful heavenly experience eating a chocolate cake at Landeau is. It's like treating your mouth to the most sumptuous and comforting experience it's ever going to have when eating something and you never want to end. And for under 5 euros, it almost feels like a steal. I really do consider going to a Landeau one of the highlights of my trip to Lisbon and urge everyone to put it on their must eats here. Even yes, over the egg tarts.

I loved the patience of the server, who got confused when I told her I wanted to eat in but wanted to take water to go. Note to self...Portuguese folks want to have their "to go" as "takeaway." What I also didn't know was that there was no place to sit!! I scooted down the counter just like all the other folks to watch the bakers prep the next gozillion pastries for the day. That was interesting. Then, I didn't know how to bus my dishes. I just left them on the counter like all the other folks and went away. This means I can now say who made them best, and more importantly, why. The interesting thing is, I didn't think the pastel de nata here were particularly great, on any dimension - fairly flimsy, doughy crust, with a pudding-like, drippy filling that was too sweet and not quite eggy enough. Don't get me wrong, I'd still eat them any time someone offered, they were still tasty, you just have a ton of options nearby, some of them notably better than the ones here. I also tried one of their fancy-looking cookies, which definitely looked fancier than it tasted. Was just a cookie. Dessert-wise I was unimpressed. They were also always fairly busy, which made ordering feel a bit rushed. So why am I still giving this bakery 5 stars, and why did I come back here a couple more times, including to get food to-go the morning we left, to get food to take on the plane with us? For exactly one reason, and it's a weird one: oddly enough, the samosas here are the best samosas I've ever had, and by a wide margin. You'd think the best samosas ever would come from an Indian restaurant or bakery, but nope, they're here. The other small savory food items we tried were also pretty good, but the samosas are the juiciest, meatiest, most perfectly bursting with spices samosas I've had. Who knew? They also had pretty solid espresso and pretty solid free-squeezed orange juice, but those aren't hard to find in Portugal (I miss seeing inexpensive fresh squeezed OJ all over the city... especially *truly* fresh squeezed, to order, from whole oranges. Portuguese OJ definitely was the best. Though obviously not *better* than other places you can get the same thing around - probably indeed the same oranges. Definitely better than anywhere you can get fresh OJ for a few bucks in the US, though, if you can find such a place. :p)
