They know what they're doing and everything taste great from the Pandeja, Pastele, Lumpia, Ganduri Rice. I could do without the tomato onion and the little cupcake but it does complete the plate. I recently developed an allergy to pork (amongst other things). Yes, pork guys....which means no more kalua pig...no more carnitas...no more lechon...no more chili verde...I could go on and on. This also meant no more pasteles. Rough life huh?! Well, my lovely friends at Pastele House have solved my problem! They make vegetarian pasteles, and they're delicious! So if you're a vegetarian or just trying to cut your meat intake, please message them! They're filled with tofu, garbanzo beans and olives and you can order them by the dozen (regular or spicy) . I have finally succeeded in getting my hands on the panadeja from the little green house! Albeit, I only got one & it was the spicy variety since well... that's all they had left. I'll take it! They're usually open on the weekdays when I'm at work, so I had to send my husband on a special mission to get me some lunch from their trailer. Bless his heart. Tip: follow their Instagram account to find out IF they're open and WHERE to find them. Sometimes they're at the Harbor. Other times they're at the Shell Gas Station. So about that panadeja (Puerto Rican version of an empanada).... the crust was perfectly cooked to a flaky golden brown. The inside -- filled with meat, olives, & possibly some other ingredients -- was absolutely delicious. Oh my gosh. I don't normally like spicy food, but this had just the right amount of spice to add that extra layer of flavor. Yum! I can't stop thinking about it. I also got a mild pastele plate which comes with gandule rice, a cupcake, & tomatoes since it's their namesake and I've never had pastele before. I was already full, but took a few bites and what I did have was also good. The cupcake was yummy and the gandule rice had a generous amount of meat mixed in. They do offer a few other things on their limited menu and I really want to try the mild panadeja (hopefully more than one, lol) & the pastele lumpia next! This is truly a FAMILY run business and it's one of the best and kindest families on the island of Maui. They are located at the Wailuku food trucks lot at 1960 Main Street in front of Maluhia Collective and next to Dolish and Like Poke. They also do a lot of events so you can find them all around maui town. You can often see their kids helping and working (taking orders etc). The food is excellent but I am also here to talk about acai bowls. It's a weird thing for them to have on the menu since it doesn't match with the theme of the truck but oh my gosh, it's a MUST. I've told at least a hundred people about it because I am an acai bowl connoisseur. This is one of my favorites on the island. They don't add apple juice to thin out the base. It's a solid thick base that doesn't melt immediately after you order it. It comes with however many toppings you want to add at no extra charge and it's a huge serving. After staying on Oahu and driving past lots of roadside pastele spots on the way to the airport, I got a craving for my favorite Puerto Rican comfort food. But when I landed on Maui, I could not find ANY pastele spots and especially none that were open. So I had to ask google and up pops Pastele House. I did a drive by and couldn't find it. I even texted them to ask if they were hiding, but unfortunately they were not parked on a Monday (granted it was Labor day). They said they'd be there the next few days so I said alright, I'll come back. Thursday rolls around and I finally find them parked on the side of the road. That bright green truck calling my name! I ordered the pastele plate (1 pastele, some arroz con gandules, some side salsa and what I'm guessing was dessert-a yellow cupcake). This hit the spot! The pastele was HOT and had good chunks of pork in it. Maybe it's a Hawaiian thing but they used black olives instead of the spanish olives. All good, I like all olives. The arroz was pretty good too. Had a good amount of stickiness to it. My only regret was not getting 2 or 3 more pasteles. I was blessed to try their pastele plate and was happy to see them at Maui Sunday's. They were super quick and friendly. Both great factors when you're hungry. The plate surely cured my pastele fix! The plate was just the right size for me. First of...the main star of the show...pastele. The masa wasn't dry, it was moist and flavorful. Don't laugh...but I was a super happy camper when there was more than one olive. Gandule rice was sooooo delish. And there was gandule beans!!!!! Do you know how many times I've had other "gandule" rice and was disappointed to be eating rice with just a little achote in it. The Pastle House DID NOT disappoint me! I had just enough room for the cornbread cupcake. Again. Not dry and flavorful. I had a little for myself before the little looked at me with puppy dog eyes for the rest. Ok. That's about the only thing I shared from my plate. The only downfall to the whole plate was the bacalao salad. Mines had no bacalao so it was really a tomato onion salad. Pastele House, now regurlarly located in Wailuku, offers AMAZING customer service - they are so warm and incredibly friendly, for that alone, I will be a life-long customer. They took over the acai business from AlohaKettleCorn (when they moved) and the bowls are SOLID, like "two thumbs up", 10 out of 10, 5-star rating solid. My freezer is always stocked with their pasteles!! We order them hot by the dozens and freeze what we don't eat. You can steam them once frozen and they taste just as delicious. Stumbled upon this food truck while looking for another and glad I did. Pros: - Seems silly but these people season and salt their food! Seems so rare these days unfortunately. - The panadejas were AMAZING. Dough was flakey and crispy and the meat was tender and packed with flavor. - The rice was perfect and I wish I could eat it with everything everyday. My family and I were recently on the hunt for the best pasteles in Maui. As former SoCal natives, we grew accustomed to having tamales at our leisure. Now that we're in Maui, pasteles are the closest thing we can get to a tamale. It's our island tamale! Pasteles aren't something you can find at every corner or in any restaurant. Majority of the best ones we've one found have either been at a fair, sold on a street corner (yes, really!) or sold out of someone's garage! Several Maui locals have claimed to hold the title of the best pasteles maker but in my opinion, this title belongs to Pasteles House Maui. Prior to ordering from Pasteles House Maui, we've searched near and far and have had several different versions of this Puerto Rican staple. But alas, Pasteles House Maui blew us away! Although they don't have a store front, their yummy pasteles can be picked up in Waiehu Beach at their home. They also have several pop up events from time to time. We ordered our first spicy dozen during the holidays and received a free batch of cupcakes (thank you!). The pasteles were not only very fresh when we picked them up but they were super moist and tasty as well. While I'm no pasteles expert, I can say that these definitely stood out compared to the other pasteles I've had on the island. They had the perfect balance of meat and masa. You can tell that they make these often and put a lot of every effort into making them just right. We were too anxious to try these yummy pasteles hence no pictures! I live in Lahaina and there are no Pastele over here(that I know of) but I remembered driving past this green truck by Kahului Harbor a few months ago. I called them up and they set me up with a bunch of individually packed, frozen pasteles. Picked them up on my way to the airport.
