Actually was quite pleasantly surprised that we liked the Venezuelan food. The lady at the counter was friendly and helpful. Lots of plant based options. Beans were well cooked and flavored. So was the rice. The bananas/ plantains added good sweet flavor to the whole meal. The coconut cheese was interesting. Never had that before but it did taste like cheese and added flavor. The jackfruit arepa sandwich that we had, could have had the jackfruit, cheese, plantains mixed together better. The jackfruit bowl was better as it was easier to mix everything and get all the flavors together. Pretty much same as the sandwich but a little more and easier to mix (so would recommend the bowl over the sandwich). The sandwich seemed to be made of rice. We also had a mango and a coconut slushie drink. The mango tasted like the mango concentrate from Costco (sugary) and the coconut was a little more original/ different. We liked both though. The only thing I didn't like was that the price was a bit high though in my opinion but I guess everything in Maui is that high priced. Update: went back and got a coconut slushie drink again :) and tried the plant based mushroom and cheese (coconut cheese) and fish empanada. They were delicious with the mushroom being our favorite. The chipotle sauces and cilantro onion sauces were delicious as well! The empanadas are not made to order (they are premade so you cannot seperate out the cheese from the mushroom but it does not have a strong flavor). I also liked the coconut slushie by itself vs mixed with mango. Note: The empanadas come in 2: when you eat in house, a red Chipotle sauce and white cilantro onion sauce are given with it (as well as with the arepas); there is another sauce for vegans (think it's a cilantro/ oil/ spice sauce). We liked the white sauce better than the vegan sauce. The empanadas are not made to order (they are premade). If you order to go, you are only given once sauce. If you want more than one, you need to just add it on before you leave with the big dispensers. Otherwise, you only get one sauce (not sure why you can't just add white and red sauce in the same to go container but we weren't given the option). And, to make things worse, the lady said curtly she would charge me next time for 2 sauces "due to the plastic". well, thank you for not charging me but the statement was unnecessary IMHO. Note for improvement (and for this, I was tempted to drop the star rating): we came here multiple times and gave your business a lot of our dollars (about 135.00), yet the above statement, I don't think was necessary if you are trying to provide good customer service. You should gladly offer extra of the sauce or even, as I suggested above, allow customers to add the sauce themselves if they want more than 1 sauce and you don't want us to "use up your plastic containers". If you really like arepas then maybe you'll like this place, but I don't really enjoy them. We tried a chicken arepa, a shredded beef bowl, and a mango smoothie. The food was okay but not very big portions for the price. The best thing was the smoothie for me. My wife really enjoyed the food but I would pass if you had to pick one place to eat while on vacation. It's an order at the counter type place and they bring the food to you. There was no air conditioning at the time so outside seating was hot but inside was hotter. Made the meal a little less enjoyable. If you end up checking it out, I hope you enjoy! read more

The filling for the arepas was very tasty. We tried the Hawaiian, carne asada, and the Reina Pepiada (chicken salad w avocado). The arepas are very generous in their filling. We also tried the arepitas fritas (plain cheese). Not sure if it's due to the size, but the arepitas (smaller ones) were way better - fluffier, while remaining crunchy. The larger ones were, again, generous in their filling and VERY tasty - but the arepas themselves were flat and not consistent. Their drinks (lilikoi & Jamaica) were SUPER tasty! The inside offers communal seating as well as two tables (all high tops) the outside has a few lower tables with chairs. We arrived at Miss Arepa, a cute Venezuelan establishment in a strip mall on Lower Honoapiilani Road, past Kaanapali, around 9:30 a.m. We drove thru a rainstorm from Makawao to try their food. Unfortunately, lunch didn't start until 11 a.m. So me and my significant other sat outside deciding what to do for 1-1/2 hours... The waitress came out and told us the cook said they could make our order if we'd wait a little longer! How thoughtful!!! I give this restaurant a solid 5 stars! We came here two days in a row because it was that good. My kids loved the empanadas--they tried the shredded beef and cheese, and both were delicious. On our first night in Maui, we were looking for some highly rated local spots and decided to try Miss Arepa. We had heard a lot about their famous arepas, but after reading a few reviews mentioning that they can get very stuffed and messy, we decided to try their bowls instead. I found this when searching best food in Maui so we decided to give it a try. Just as other reviews have said, it is a refreshing change of pace from tacos and fish dishes on the island. We ordered the Pabellon and wanted the Reina Pepiada but that one was out so we did La Mexicana instead. The food came out pretty quickly and very hot. The arepas are very juicy and more of a fork situation than what we thought it would be. It was actually hard to eat all together and the masa bread encasing was not my favorite alone so I used it as a chip and it was a bit better. The fillings and sauces they give you to add were both fantastic. The beef and chicken were well seasoned and full of flavor. Miss Arepa is an easy 5 stars - it was one of the cheapest dinners we had in Maui, but one of the most satisfying. We got there in the last hour before closing and it was still full of people, most seemed like locals. You order at the counter and then find a table to sit at. We ordered the shrimp bowl that came with rice, beans, and plantains and did 3 mini arepas with beef and cheese fillings. We also got a side of tostones and salad. The arepas were sooo good too, crunchy on the outside and able to hold up to a lot of fillings. The side of tostones was a bigger portion than we expected, and we were happy to get to take some home. First, a shout out to the Yelp community for coming through with some spot on rec's for Miss Arepa. Having been coming to Maui for years, my wife and I love to find small places that are away from the heart of the touristy areas. Some such places still slip into the category of "overrated and underwhelming". Not Miss Arepa's!!! A true gem nestled into the same strip center as another of our favorites - Fish Market Maui - Miss Arepa's is a small shop serving up, to steal the descriptor from another review, true flavor bombs! On this most recent trip, my wife and I were looking for a non-seafood option as we had been gorging ourselves on the outstanding Hawaiian seafood over the previous 5 days. Arepas sounded good, and it has been quite some time since we had had those back on the mainland. We trusted in Yelp and made the drive over to Miss Arepa's. From the moment we walked in we knew we were in for a treat. The woman working the front of the shop was so amazingly pleasant she set the tone for the meal. She cheerfully helped my wife navigate the menu to find an option that did not have garlic (food sensitivity). And she was quick to mention that the shrimp, in general, was a great choice We settled on the shrimp with tomatos and bell pepper salsa for my wife, and, I caved and opted for the garlic shrimp (after receiving special dispensation from my wife, of course). And then, to share we added one Hawaiiana (Kalua pork and pineapple salsa) We grabbed a table outside to enjoy the cool midday temperatures and in very short order our three arepas were brought to us - along with two sauces (a chipotle spicy aioli and a garlic aioli). The arepas were visually stunning and after a brief moment admiring the presentation we hungrily dove in. OMG. That's it. That is really the review. The depth of flavor in each bite was simply amazing. The shrimp - fresh, perfectly cooked. Flavorful. The sauces. Bursting with flavors. Not too heavy on the spice. Balanced and paired so well with the rest of the dish The arepas. Hot! Very hot! Fresh! Very fresh! Crispy outside. Tender inside. Delicious And the kahlua pork. We've had kahlua pork in dozens of dishes in dozen of restaurant across the islands and none, and I mean none, matched this. Smoky tender morsels of pure gastronomical delight. The only downside to this experience. We leave tomorrow and won't have time to return to try all the other items on the menu. Definitely a strong option! We ordered two pabellon bowls, chicken and steak, and both were actually fabulous. The steak wasn't overly chewy or all fat; it was juicy and flavorful. The chicken was also well seasoned and moist. The rice was a little bland for our taste, but they offered a mayo-heavy yet fresh-made cilantro sauce, chipotle sauce, and fresh-made chimichurri sauce. I also wish they gave thicker plantain pieces, but the taste was great. It is counter service, but the register staff were very nice. They let me sub beans for salad. I'm so happy I discovered Miss Arepa! This restaurant is absolutely excellent and is a true hidden gem. I ordered the Pabellón arepa, and it was incredibly delicious--packed with flavor, perfectly prepared, and one of the best arepas I've had. Everything tasted fresh, and you can tell a lot of care goes into the food. I'm already looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu. If you're in the area and craving authentic, flavorful food, Miss Arepa is definitely worth a visit. They have VERY generous portions especially for the box size! It was so filling I could not finish it myself. The yuka fries have such a perfect crispy texture and I appreciate the salty flavor. This is my first arepa and I am a big fan! I could see why they have so many returning customers! Perfect for a quick lunch on the go! Everyone is so friendly and kind! They greeted and helped me out with such a genuine kindness. Service took only about 10 min in and out. The restaurant is spotless and clean with lots of casual seating. read more
