If the rude staff isn't bad enough... If the staring as you walk through the aisles isn't uncomfortable enough [was it my cargo pants?]... If having to bag your items really fast while the butt-faced cashier starts ringing the next customer isn't unhelpful enough... If the ridiculous price hikes soon after COVID (that's when I stopped going there) weren't pinching your wallet enough... If none of these things turn you off, the putrid frozen items should! I came home with not one, not two but three large packs of MOLDY rotis/chapatis. I live 15 minutes away from the store. I picked it out of their freezer and it was in mine in 30 mins tops. I opened it the next day to a slimy, foul smelling 24 pack. Same with the other two. Looks like they tried to pass off thawed, ruined, frozen-again rotis to me, an unsuspecting customer. What a depressing Patel Brothers compared to NYC and NJ. You'd never know these are the same parent company unless you get only packaged products. Produce here is not as fresh, the store itself is small, run-down like a 2002 Chevrolet beater you let the winter salt eat on, no parking lot, no happening music, no enclave of neighboring desi fast food spots, no VIBES for the customers. We came from Boston to check this place out but the shopping experience was abysmal. Given the substantial population who would buy their products, the company should open a proper showroom/flagship location with its own parking lot closer to Boston. Patel Brothers has to close for two weeks due to price hike violation. Their NJ stored hiked up prices 3-times higher and someone complained. They also had to pay a $ 250,000 penalty. Whenever I need vegetables, milk or Indian groceries, I shop at Patel. Although the place can get really hectic at times and they do not always have the freshest produce, going on a "good day" can save you a lot of money. My only complaint is that I saw a staff member organizing samosas in a container while squatting on the floor. The fact that I purchased some earlier made me quite disgusted and I've never eaten anything "fresh" from them again. read more

I've been in a few Indian markets but I am appalled with the service in this one. I watched the cashier rudely argue with my friend on her choice of payment when my friend offered up her credit card to pay. I'm okay with a "do you have cash?" question for a reasonably low charge at a small business. But this place accepts CC and is a chain grocery store... and it's not the question so much but the RUDE part. A couple years ago I had a really bad experience outside the store. A clerk purposely rammed into me on the sidewalk with a GROCERY CART because I apparently would not move. I had headphones in waiting for the bus stop minding my own business, I couldn't hear anything. So here's the deal; if you eat, drink, sleep Indian food or are Indian, you will LOVE this place. Unlike other Indian stores, this one is clean and extremely well organized. They actually turnover their stock really quick and there is never any question of food products beyond expiration (Yes, it happens at all other Indian Stores, make sure to check). I like their prices, food choices, cheap/fresh veggies and they also carry many vegetables common to the Indian sub continent. And in the corner frozen section near the registers, they have fish from India, "Bangda or Paplet" anyone? They have both fillet and whole fish. Mr. Patel and his wife are extremely friendly, courteous and accomodating. On some occasions, I have had to take things back and Mr. Patel has taken them back or exchanged them for new one's no questions asked (unheard of at other Indian Stores). The other staff is friendly and helpful too, some are rough on the edges or seem brash, its not because they mean to be that way, its probably due to their lack of English skills or the cultural difference. Go on a weekend at your own risk, there will be hordes of Desis, all getting their weekly groceries and you will be fighting for space, I personally prefer a weeknight. read more

This is one of my weekly grocery stops. They have a great selection of both produce and Indian packaged foods, typically for the best prices around. But you should be warned about the "hidden costs" of shopping here: Once you get home with your bags full of fresh oranges, jicama, bell pepper, and whatever, you'll cut into one of them to find it's rotten and black inside. In fact, this happens to me almost every week. (See the photo below.) You'll want to exchange it for an edible one, but you're out of luck: produce is BUYER BEWARE at Patel's. So you'll have to factor in the cost of rotten produce from those hard-to-believe prices. And I can guarantee that there will be some. Nevertheless, I continue to shop there and enjoy it. It's a bustling and rough place -- a lot like shopping in a local market overseas -- which is a lot more interesting than your standard, sterile American supermarket. read more

I LOVE going here on Saturday afternoons. I am not of Indian decent and I do not cook Indian food, but they carry a lot of the produce that I use often in my cooking at CHEAP prices: 5 heads of garlic for .99 cents, HUGE bunches of cilantro 2 for $1 and the avocado's are always .99 cents. They have a great selection of spices, frozen goods and rice. I must admit, that I still buy my Samosa's a few doors down, they are best around. read more

As an Indian Malaysian, walking through Patel Brothers was like walking through an Indian grocery store in Kuala Lumpur. Their selections are pretty impressive from cheap produce, to great frozen dinners to snacks and raw spices and ingredients. Due to a large Hispanic population there, they also have a great selection of Mexican and South American food items. Their staff are also very helpful. If you're Indian and missing your food and culture, hop on that 70 bus and come down to Moody street. Waltham is my favorite city in MA because of its sheer diversity, and it makes me feel very happy and sentimental to see such diversity flourishing in a place like this. read more

Great inventory - TONS of spices, bulk grains etc. Anytime i need spices, rice, basic produce, or nuts - this is my first stop. It helps that it is right around the corner from where I live. Service has been hit or miss, usually on the lackluster side - but for some reason this doesnt bother me much, I just chalk it up to language barriers in many of the cases. It is indeed kinda cramped as others have noted, and a bit dimly lit. But their bargains make up for it in my mind. And they have fresh samosas for 60 cents each, and other delicious homemade treats. Naan is a bargain and I wont buy it anywhere else now. They also sell vita coco by the crate, which is really nice! Downsides: As I already stated, staff can seem a bit unapproachable and unfriendly at times but I honestly do not feel they are rude, just very busy and perhaps uncomfortable with the english language (keep in mind this is NOT every staff member here). Also it can get CRAZY busy late at night and on weekends. I went once on a saturday and high-tailed it out of there because I was getting rammed with a shopping cart every five feet. They also accept credit cards and debit cards but can give you a bit of an attitude at times if its busy or if your making a smaller purchase. I always go in with cash to make it easier. All and all though, I do love this place. read more

Between the two Patel Bros. markets, I still prefer the one in Shrewsbury. This location feels more congested, though the goods are mostly similar. There seems to be slightly more selection in Shrewsbury... except that here, they offer samosas ($.60), items that looked like a pakora of some kind, and similar snacks at low prices where Shrewsbury does not. This location is also much more packed, with the store 2/3 the width and length of the other location. There are 4 aisles here as opposed to 5 at the other store, but the aisles are much tighter. Lighting is also dimmer, which adds to the illusion. However, overall, it is still a very good Indian market in terms of overall quality, selection, and dangerous impulse buys. Either way, at Patel Bros., they are good for finding certain items for me. Chinese eggplant here is consistently better than I've seen at the Asian markets, generally. Cilantro is MUCH better in quality here and generally $.50 a bunch. Yogurt, curry leaves, and spices make up my other staples while I occasionally try a guilty pleasure of a snack every so often. Parking here is a little more annoying, needing to use the municipal lot each time, but it's only a quarter for me each visit. Lines at the end tend to be more of a CF than Shrewsbury, due to the lack of linearity between the checkout and aisles. read more

Just drove out of my way on Sunday just to visit Patel Bros. Last weekend my Indian in-laws and I stumbled upon the Natick location, and we were all pleased with the cheap produce and spices, clean and bright interior, and variety. Waltham location was a lot more crowded and a bit smaller, but I was still able to find everything I needed (their layout, unlike most Indian groceries, is actually pretty intuitive). Best of all, I scored another box of great, perfectly ripe mangos for $7.99! Breakfast for a week! I heart Patel Brothers. read more

I almost always like coming here. I buy produce, raisins, and nuts here and I'm not disappointed with the products. Occasionally the tomatoes are kind of sad, and I've spotted mold on strawberries before, but as long as you're inspecting the food before you buy it, there's no problem. I did have a fairly unpleasant experience in which one of the cashiers swiped my debit card as credit and told me it was declined. She then swiped again as credit, and finally after instructing her to let me just enter my pin, it went through. Turns out the charges actually did go on my card the first time, so I was charged $60 for a $20 purchase. Then that money was locked up for four days until they resolved it. I went to speak to the owner when it happened, and he didn't even let me finish telling him what the problem was. He was rude, pretentious, unaccommodating, and unapologetic. He refused to listen and refused to even look into the issue for me. I can say with confidence that I was extremely friendly about bringing the issue to his attention, but his attitude was just too much to handle. I ended up walking out and had to wait until the $40 was put back in my account (which sucks when you're working a shit job and living paycheck to paycheck). The cashiers and the manager are terribly unpleasant, but on more than one occasion one of the men who stock the shelves has been extremely helpful and kind. I'll keep going back because they have some of the items I regularly buy at a lower price than the other grocers on Moody, but Waltham India Grocery has better staff, is less nuts on weekends, and sells walnuts for a lot less than Patel. read more

Wow first to review!!! Don't I get a gift certificate or something? Patel Brothers is one of several Indian groceries on Moody Street in Waltham. If you like to cook Indian food, and to peruse its fascinating ingredients, Patel Brothers is where you want to be. It has the vibe of a neighborhood grocery store, meaning that there are lots of shoppers and therefore it's easy to get advice and recommendations. I talked to two shoppers that made suggestions on brands and recipes for making sambar. As for what you can buy there, it's primarily dry goods, frozen and prepared (refrigerated). There is a dairy section, deserts, and some very interesting produce if you're not from India. For example, I'd never seen turmeric root before. It's a fun place to go if you cook Indian, or want to learn more about the cuisine. I'll let you know how the sambar and rasam turn out, but I would encourage you to try it yourself by visiting this great food market. Update 7/12/10: I think folks are catching on to Patel Bros. Patel Brothers is a great place to buy your groceries. It can be vegetables to spices to milk, all with low prices. The quality of the produce is generally good, however, I have noticed that the vegetables tend to be much better quality during mid-afternoon weekdays. This place does tend to get very busy during the weekends, so be prepared to wait. Again, I would recommend going during weekdays, just because there are less people and you can shop more calmly. read more

1 star is plenty for the DISGUSTING customer service at this store. If I could give a rating of minus 5 stars, I certainly would. What the heck do this particular store owners / the staff at the billing counter, think about themselves? Stores don't do any SERVICE to the customers. It is the other way around. You people are not giving away anything free of cost. So, NO NEED to be rude to the customers. NEVER again will I shop at this horrible store again. GOOD RIDDANCE. Bought a pressure cooker gasket (which was not even properly sealed in the first place). I assumed it might have been that way because of improper handling and storage during shipping because they all are shipped from India to these stores here. The gasket did NOT fit the model PC we had, as mentioned on the package. So, this week, we visit the store again to return it (as exchange for something else at the store). They had very few gaskets (seemingly old, worn packages again) already and none of those seemed to fit the PC what we had. So, after buying groceries worth $65, we tell her (a lady at the billing counter) that it did NOT FIT our model of PC, so we need to return it and that we showed her THE RECEIPT from the last week (Their store policy says "returns within 7 days with receipt"!!). She looks at it and says they don't accept "opened" items. We had to tell her that is how it almost was. We did not even try too much to open it. It was just "sealed" in the center of the package. Then the other girl was examining it as if they are selling shiny brand-new-looking products and the ones we returned was probably used! Then after muttering among themselves, she started billing our groceries by throwing things around as if they are doing a HUGE service and favor for us by accepting a return for a product worth JUST $5.99. DESPICABLE folks! When will they ever realize that it was OUR MONEY in their pocket which they are so fussing about giving back? Did they give it to us for free? WHY sell something ill-fitting when you cannot accept its return? If you cannot stand behind your products, QUIT selling. The store is NOT even well-stocked or big enough to move the cart around. LEARN some customer service. If this is the service these bugs provide here in the USA where other stores have generous return policies and reasonably good customer service, imagine the customers' plight in India if they have stores there. read more

I come here all the time with my husband. They're much better than India market (down the street). The prices are good, selection is good, service is fast. I'm indian, so I get all my spices, flours, indian vegetables here. The dairy is expensive, so I go elsewhere. This place is great! The prices are so low on spices that they are almost giving this stuff away. I get my cumin, cloves, cinnamon sticks, etc., here at all time because it is one tenth the price of the same items in grocery stores. Plus their produce is pretty inexpensive as well. Same with the prepared foods. Not sure how they can sell stuff so cheap but it certainly works for me! Some reviewers have complained about how rude the owner and cashiers are; I have never had an unpleasant interaction with any of the workers there so far. They have always been very helpful. Maybe because I go there during the day when they are not very busy? Conclusion: definitely worth a trip for the variety and prices on Indian food and spices. read more

I compared apple to apple and for each thing price difference was 29 to 50 cents piece. They have everything you need from an indian store, Mr. Patel is awesome in customer service. It's always a great bargain and for the most part all of the materials I have received have been fresh except for 1 time where the flour had insects in it. Maybe it was due to the summer heatstroke though. Other than that I have had a very positive experience and recommend this shop to others as well. read more

So let me begin by saying Mr. Patel is awesome. He is always there to assist and make sure you get whatever you are looking for. Now you wonder why 2 stars - Their customer service sucks. The leader of suckiest service pack Miss AMITA is a joke! I asked her about some item and her response "its in the aisle" wow! I didn't know that. I paced back and forth the suggested aisle unable to find the item. I asked her again (stupid me) and yet again she doesn't even bother walking with me to the section to guide me. Finally, I was able to find the product I was looking for. Point being I will find the product after 10 minutes however if you know a customer is looking for something and you can find it in 30 secs then why not help? If you see AMITA next time - do tell her to learn to help people since she is so ugly the only thing in her favor would be her helpful nature ( just looking out for her) at this point she has nothing in her favor.
