Midtown between 5th and 6th is mostly sad salad chains and tourist traps, so Valerie is doing more work than it should have to. Went today, pre-theater crowd already forming at 5. It's better than it needs to be, which in this neighborhood counts for a lot. The room is the star. Brass, smoked mirrors, marble, wallpaper with burlesque dancers, very Gatsby cosplay but done with actual money. Think the Campbell at Grand Central, minus the $28 martini attitude. It's also LOUD downstairs. Ask for upstairs if you want to hear your date. Gin is the program here and they take it seriously, house-infused bottles paired with specific tonics, not an afterthought. My G&T was legitimately well built. Food from chef JC Colón is better than cocktail-bar standard: truffle fries in duck fat are worth it, the lobster mac at $31 is rich and fine but you've had it before. Skip dessert. The steak frites at $48 is where I'd tap out, that's real-restaurant money for bar food execution. Here's the move though: weekday happy hour, 4 to 7. Dollar oysters and $13 cocktails in a room this pretty is one of the best deals in Midtown, full stop. Service was warm and fast even slammed. Not a destination, but if you're near Bryant Park or seeing a show, this beats everything else within five blocks. Book ahead, walk-ins were getting turned away by 5:30. read more

Our server was fantastic--friendly, helpful, and highly efficient. The cocktail menu leans heavily into gin, but they are happy to mix up whatever you like. I ordered a margarita and it was excellent! For dinner, I went with the steak frites. It was absolutely delicious, and the portion was so generous that I actually had to push myself to finish it. It had such old New York speak easy vibes! we came in time for happy hour and enjoyed some drinks and an app at a discount. They don't have a lot for vegetarians unfortunately but I got the ramp angniolotti and it was very good. We also enjoyed some salad to split and some fantastic drinks. The Gimlet was outstanding. My wife and I took our kids (10 and 16 year old boys) to this place on our last evening in NYC. We were looking for a place that had a nice ambiance and good food. Ambiance: This place has a nice ambiance, definitely very "New York" -- dark (you can't see how dirty the floor is) and loud music (maybe too loud). We sat upstairs (we had a reservation) and of all the people on the top there was a party of 4 (us), a party of 8 (all dudes celebrating something) and the rest of the tables were on a DATE - which I thought was funny. Service: We were served by Ann-Marie who was so delightful. She was kind, super nice, and took the time to speak to us (which is basically how we figured out she wasn't a native New York City person). She gave us good food suggestions and we were very happy with our selection. Food: Here is what we ordered * Steak Frites: My two boys got the steak frites and I have to say the steak was awesome! I had a bite of each of theirs and they each ordered it differently (one Medium Rare/Medium and one Medium) and they both were prepared PERFECTLY. The fries were overflowing. * Caeser Salad with Salmon: My wife got the salad with Salmon (they only have a few salad options) and she enjoyed it. * Prawn and Crab Risotto: I got this and I have to say it was VERY bland. I wouldn't get this if you are looking for taste. I had to put salt and pepper on it to make it have any semblance of taste. We had the fried chicken Benedict and the crab cake Benedict. I was a bit confused when I saw that each Benedict dish only had one poached egg - shouldn't it always be two? I guess that's shrinkflation (plus inflation) for you. That bent said, the crab cake was actually really big and filling. The side of potatoes were really delicious. Lovely place to chill with some friends after work and I would definitely come for their happy hour as their oysters are so good for $1 each! Not a fan of this place. We came for lunch, and the ambiance is great, and it feels very cute, but the dish I ordered was not good. I got this pasta type gnocchi dish, and it was so underdone, the sauce it was sitting in was like water, and the peas even felt undercooked and unseasoned. Brings about a very 1920s vibe, with speakeasy cocktails. Great interior and vibe, with a location that clearly brings in a lot of folks for an after work happy hour meet. I had read a couple of reports that happy hour was dying but it's alive and well here. And for good reason. The cocktails are phenomenally well done. Mixology is on point, making a deceptive drink that doesn't have any hint of alcohol. The food was also great. Had the New York Strip Steak Frites, which was cooked perfectly to the temp I wanted (medium-rare), described as "10oz grass-fed brandt steak, hand-cut french fries, peppercorn compound butter, green garlic chimichurri", and the dish delivered. The chimichurri, and other condiments are in small dishes as sides so you can choose them or not. I gave it a try bu the steak didn't need help although the chimichurri was good. The fries were crispy but not overdone. Service was also good, especially for the crowds, the team served well and without being overbearing. Came here for a slightly early dinner after a Broadway show with a party of 4 on a Sunday evening. We had a reservation, but it didn't seem like we would have needed one, but I suppose better safe than sorry. The ambiance feels straight of the golden age, which is an aesthetic I'm certainly a sucker for. Even their robust cocktail menu fits the bill and is one of the prettiest menus I've ever had the joy of perusing. Staff was able to sit us a little bit ahead of our reservation which was also much appreciated. Wait staff was also very helpful and attentive, I don't think I've ever had my water glass so topped off! Starting off with cocktails, this place is a gin bar through and through and you'd be making a mistake if you didn't try one of their many options. I went with the 10,000 words, which you simply just give a spirit of your choice (I picked gin of course) and whether you antes) wanted your drink shaken or stirred and the bartender does the rest, so a bit of a surprise! I wound up with their version of The Last Word which was delightfully citrusy but I was hoping I'd wind up with something a little more adventurous app things considered. My girlfriend got the blackberry G&T, which was not only very pleasing to look at but delicious to boot. For food, we started with splitting some zucchini blossoms and beef cheek bao buns (both come in portions of 3). Both were tasty, but I love a good bao bun and these were so light and pillowy, I could have just went for an order of those for my main course. For the entree I went for the roasted half chicken, perhaps the most unassuming choice on the menu but this was maybe the best roast chicken I've ever had. Prepared perfectly, cooked to perfection, excellent portion size, and the kicker of it all was the stunning gravy that I was tempted to lick my plate for. Chicken is very easy to screw up, and they nailed it on all fronts here. My girlfriend went for the Valerie Signature burger with white cheddar and this thing did not mess around! A very rich patty, cooked to her temperature of choice served alongside some garlic truffle fries that made an American classic feel just a little more elevated. Our experience was delightful and I'd love to comeback here again, especially to check out more of the cocktail menu and soak in more of that golden age aura the place gives. read more

To be able to see the band, you need to sit downstairs in the front section. You can also sit upstairs at the upstairs bar and position yourself to see the band. There are also a couple of cozy rooms in ther rear of the downstairs. Shrimp and grits highly recommended by my husband, I had the Greek omelette twice and it's delicious! The hostess told us we could sit at the front window but that there would be no server and we'd have to go up to the bar to order. I love the name of the restaurant. Inside, it's beautiful. The lights are dim. It's like being in an old school movie. Tristan was our server and he was great. He explained the wide array of drinks and gave us recommendations. The food was delicious! For appetizers, we ordered the crab cake and octopus. We made reservations for 10:30 p.m. after a show, and our kids arrived a bit earlier, the staff seated them even before we got there, which was already a for me! They had a nice table for six ready. It is a bit loud inside, so conversation can be a challenge, but the energy is great. The food was really good! We loved the truffle fries, the flavor was excellent, though after the first few long fries, most were small pieces, so they were a little harder to pick up. My daughter's burger fries, on the other hand, were perfectly long and crispy. I had the tuna tartare and the beet appetizer for my meal, both were super good! Based on a very memorable brunch with my sister in 2023; I knew that I wanted to bring my son here during his first trip to my hometown (he is not a city guy, but i have a plan to make him fall for New York). Valerie, tonight was a part of my plan to win him over.Cocktails here are inspiring , the menu is fresh and flavorful with attention to detail, amazing versions of classic dishes with so many fresh unexpected ingredients that reading menu descriptions of the cocktails and the share plates, one may order cautiously: Indeed the kitchen comes right to the edge of "gilding the lily" on dishes like the tuna tartare and my very favorite the grilled octopus. Each condiment is chosen with care and used with restraint to make each ingredient shine and achieve balanced near perfection. Portion sizes are generous for the proteins and the accompaniments are fantastic ( smudges of kewpie mayo and tweezed micro cilantro as well as a seaweed AND blue corn chips for the tuna and the harissa , heirloom tomato for the octopus. I love that the octopus is served in smoky barely charred slices instead of one longer tentacle. The temperature of the ingredients matter with the tuna cool but not icy and the octopus warmer than lukewarm but not by much. The warm harissa spices and room temp avocado make this my number one favorite version of this small plate that I almost always order when I see it on a menu at home in SF. , perfect ripe avocado ( just a little )and easter egg radishes shavings make the octopus shine! I was midway through the starters before I settled on a cocktail. My Lime Ricky was sweet, but not overpowering and the clear liquid looked deceptively plain. I love sparkles and for my mouth to pucker from citrus!I It was a fun aesthetic to have the one long ( phalic) ice cube and both a plump olive and a twist of lemon. The cocktail menu is in and of itself, a tiny book of whimsically and mischievously illustrated very short stories... made with "Gin Mare & Gin Mare Capri, clarified lime, lime cordial, soda water ​Bright - tart - force carbonated! " J'adore! I was tempted to cancel the shared signature burger and order another of each of the seafood starters, but it was the best burger I had had in years.. You can keep your crusty smash burgers. I love a medium rare, thick and juicy piece of meat. Again everything arrived to the table perfectly composed ( the bun was fantastic and branded( nice touch.)It was cut in half ( look at the cross section!) The french onion marmalade was sweet, acidic and gooey- thanks to the white cheddar cheese. It was a knife and fork situation for sure. French Fries were perfect, not thin, not too thick not overly salted and oh so crispy. The goldilocks fries of my future dreams. I kept a running joke with my kid that I was " the quietest girl in New York". He was amused, and even more impressed than I was ! His first night out at Valerie in NYC is going to be hard to beat!- even with tickets to the Yankees home opener and the musical version of his favorite book , " The Outsiders". As you enter you got the bar then a little ahead you have the dining area, which is beautifully lit. I started with the house made raviolo with wild ramp ricotta and black truffle, absolutely outstanding. I also had the heritage pork chop and this was hands-down the winner of the night.
