We were staying in Times Square and were looking for a cool spot with live jazz. What luck that the Rum House was just a few blocks away! Tucked into a very cool art deco hotel, the Rum House is a tiny little oasis amidst the insanity of Times Square. There was a guy at the door asking about reservations. We did not have one, but we were admitted regardless, and a friendly server / hostess informed us of the 2 drink minimum and seated us right near where the musicians were set up. The drink menu is a ode to rum. All kinds of rum; spiced, dark, overproof, high end. Most of the cocktails are tiki cocktails, but do not be turned off if you don't like sweet drinks! It's a myth that tiki cocktails are all sickly sweet. A properly crafted tiki drink will be a great balance between alcohol, sugar, mint and acid. These drinks were properly crafted! I honestly cannot remember what Larry and I ordered but all four of our drinks were delightful! You really can't go wrong with any of their rum cocktails. We were with Larry's brother, who is not much of a drinker. He ordered a whisky sour made with Crown Royal. The whisky sour was a surprising standout! The sour mix is house made (of course), which elevates this drink from an overly sweet attempt to cover up cheap whisky to a complex beverage that can be savored. The jazz was great - they had 4 musicians (kind of a lot in the small room) who played 2 songs before breaking and returning for another 2 songs, etc, etc. The short sets were welcome as they allowed for conversation between the entertainment. Been wanting to check this place out for YEARS... I finally have. It was really small. It looked so much bigger to me in pictures. This is not a bad thing, I was just surprised. Regardless, I love the dark decor. Its not loud or anything, just a more relaxing environment for drinks where you can actually speak to each other. They have a huge selection of drinks, not too much to eat but there's plenty of restaurants in the area to handle that for you. The popcorn did smell good though. It was also the end of Happy Hour when we arrived. My husband got the 'Hot Buttered Rum' and I got the 'Escape' which was Bacardi 8yr Rum, Coconut Crème, Pineapple Juice, Sweet Vermouth. The drinks were STRONG. They are also pricy but the Hot Buttered Rum was part of Happy Hour so that helped. The service was super friendly, knowledgeable and quick. Got the hotel nacional which was just a lovely level of sweetness - some pineapple and apricot and a mixture of light and dark rum served with lime and a luxardo maraschino. So classy. My wife and I love this place a lot. It's a great place to get a cocktail before you have to go to a show. They also have some small bites like a pretzel that was like holy crap. That was so good. Met a friend for cocktails. Although it was Happy Hour we chose off the main menu. We were happy to see the selection of Bacardi products. I got a Grey Goose dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives and she got a daiquiri with an aged Bacardi rum. After a bit we got some snacks including olives and popcorn. The place had a nice vibe to it and I liked the low lighting. Music was perfect volume. There was also live music later in the evening (9:30pm?) but we were not staying that long. My daughter and I dropped in for a couple of digestif drinks after dinner and had a nice time. It was a little late so they weren't crowded. It was comfortable - perhaps a little dark, but it wasn't smoky or hot. The wait staff were friendly. The drinks were tasty and reasonably priced. She had a classic daiquiri and I had a bourbon Manhattan (photos). There was a band playing live, but they were nearing the end of their set and there wasn't a cover charge. I can't say this is a place I would want to hang around for hours, but for a "drop in, have a drink, and move on" kind of bar it was juuust right. Recommended. I would definitely go back. read more

The Rum House offers a great selection of Rum, great live music (Jazz) and a fun ambience. I've come here several times, I've yet to be disappointed. The service was great - friendly, helpful, fast. And the cocktail menu was great. They're obviously known for their rum cocktails, but I tried one of their exclusive cocktails that doesn't include rum - the Mango Cart Mezcalarita (Banhez Mezcal, Giffard Mango Liqueur, Ancho Reyes Verde Chile Liqueur, Pilla Select Liqueur, Lime Juice, Pineapple Juice, Two James Dr Bird Pineapple Ru). There's little to no food options but it's a great selection of drinks. I visited when I wasn't too crowded and just walked in and they let us have a table for an hour. A nice cozy place to just chill. Also since it's mostly drinks they have tipping at 3,5,7 percentage since they really just bring your drink to the table and call it a day. Some girl friends and I came here for some drinks before dinner. On a weeknight, it was busy but slowly died down by the time we left around 8pm. It looks like many people come by for happy hour after work nearby. Even though there were lots of reserved tables, we were able to easily grab a table for four. While many drinks are rum based, there were many other options as well. I opted for the Rum Old Fashioned with The Real McCoy ($19), which the server recommended over the other Old Fashioned. First went to the Rum House because of the convenient location and have continued to go due to the good drinks and amazing service. The happy hour is a good time and you never know what conversations you'll have (or overhear!) at the bar. They do have non-rum drinks, but why would you come to the Rum House if not for rum! I went to the Rum House in the past (pre-pandemic), and I witnessed several acts with diverse band members. My favorite being the late, blues singer, C, Honey Smith, (passed away Feb 2024) who had an amazing pianist, Lucy Galiher on the piano. It was a diverse band, So I am looking to bring a few friends visiting from London , so I checked the calendar of music acts at the Rum House... I was surprised to find that there were 10 Jazz Ensembles, but there were NO black Jazz musicians in any of the bands, This is shocking since we are in New York City, not Idaho!. It takes a lot of screening to have 10 different Jazz & Blues bands where there are NO BLACK MUSICIANS. This speaks volumes about the management, I am embarrassed to bring my friends who are anticipating a real New York Jaazz music experience with absolutely no black musicians. read more

I sat at the bar, and the patrons there were friendly and the bartenders were extremely helpful. They can make a number of drinks, both off menu and the carefully crafted menu drinks. The atmosphere is dark with low tungsten lighting at night. A great spot. I'll note that Yelp lists as one of their most popular drinks the "Hemingway El Dorado White". That drink does not exist. If you ask for anything related to Hemingway, you will get a daiquiri. El Dorado White is one of their light rums and that alcohol can be combined with any mixers to make a delicious drink but the Hemingway El Dorado really isn't a thing. read more

Came on a Wednesday after their HH finished at around 6:30 pm. There were reserved signs on all the tables, but apparently it's just a placeholder-- I stood around for a bit until someone helped seat me. Servers were generally friendly and nice. You can order at the bar or at the table. I personally don't like rum, so I got a mezcal based drink that was pretty solid. Prices are standard at around $18-$20 a drink. The space is relatively small overall and dimly lit but in a good way. Would I go out of my way to come back here again? Nice little spot near Times Square We managed to visit The Rum House twice during our stay in NYC, both times around Happy Hour. We were seated promptly and told about the Happy Hour Specials. The Rum Punch was very good, as was the Daquiri, just know it's a traditional daquiri recipe and not a frozen monstrosity from Applebees. The ambiance is lovely, dark and warm, you feel like you're in an old Jazz club. The servers are well-dressed and friendly, and our drinks didn't take long to come out each time we ordered. We didn't get any bites so I can't review the food, but I very much enjoyed the Rum House and will likely return when next I am in the area and have a bit of time to kill, or just if I want a tasty beverage. read more
