When people think of whiskey in Indiana's Brown County, they might think of that other place. (You…read moreknow the one.) But there is another distillery quietly making small-batch, high-quality spirits in Nashville, and that's Bear Wallow Distillery. Located just outside of downtown Nashville, Bear Wallow Distillery is one of the only female-owned distilleries in the country. They create their spirits in a traditional copper pot still, which I learned is unique. Inside the tasting room, you can enjoy a whiskey tasting or a flight, or sip a craft cocktail and relax in the shop. I chose to enjoy a "Call Me Old Fashioned" standing up at the bar, while chatting with the guy who made me my drink. My Old Fashioned was well balanced, not too sweet and made me feel all warm inside, as a good Old Fashioned should. Those who are interested in learning more about the whiskey-making craft can go on a Farm-to-Fifth Tour, which takes you behind the scenes to learn about the history of whiskey and see the full production process. I did, and I found it very informative! I had a new appreciation for the kind of whiskey and spirits they are making here at Bear Wallow Distillery. From the ingredients they choose to the barrels they use, they really put their foot in it, as they say. If you like whiskey, or just like to try local spirits, this is a good place to visit in Nashville.

The guy working was so nice and explained everything so we knew what the different whiskey's were. We loved it and I would for sure come back here. Depending on how busy they are, you may have a short wait for a table, and your food might take a little longer to come out--but it's well worth it. Don't stop at just the restaurant. Take some time to explore the beautiful grounds, browse the merchandise shop, and walk out to Hard Truth on the Rocks, where you'll find a spacious outdoor deck overlooking the property. During the warmer months, they often have live music, making it an easy place to spend a few relaxing hours. The cocktails are excellent, the staff has always been incredibly friendly, and there's plenty of Hard Truth merchandise if you're looking for a souvenir. I may or may not have left with a t-shirt. Whether you're visiting Brown County for the day or just passing through Nashville, Hard Truth is more than just a restaurant--it's a destination that's absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.

I ordered the spinach salad and it came out perfectly. I had grilled chicken added to it. The flavor was great and there were sun-dried tomatoes, bacon, and walnuts on the salad. The dressing was light and tasty. The room was huge and a bit loud but I could still talk with my friend. I definitely recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

There are within sight of each other. The store is basically stocked to support the campers but also the people renting boats who may have forgot some critical needs. For such a tiny store they have managed to stock just about every need one could think of. And no matter how prepared you think you are, it seems you always forget something or run out of some supplies. This store has been a lifesaver for us. We needed a smaller styrofoam cooler to take on a boat instead of our full size cooler on wheels - check, they had it. We needed something to go on a sunburn - check, they had it. And it was a great product, an aloe gel with lidocaine. We forgot to bring the cereal, brought the milk, but forgot the cereal - check, they had eight kinds to choose from including our favorite, Frosted Flakes. Last year when we brought the granddaughters, they had all that weird packaged candy they like. And of course, they have three giant freezers of bagged ice. At $2.50 a bag, I think that's pretty reasonable all things considered. Some prices are high but fair for being remote. Kroger is six miles away. They aren't gouging you like some places outside the State Recreation Area.

(And the lake isn't as busy) As someone who has boated on Monroe my whole life, jet skis created a whole new experience of the lake. I had never driven one, but it was super simple. Next time I'll rent one for longer. :) No complaints in regards to the staff. It's never a bad idea to take photo/video of the jet ski or boat before you head out on the water though. They were very thorough with us and I felt prepared! You may want to note that a $7 fee is required to get into the park where they are located- unless you hold the state park pass!

Honestly it didn't seem horrible to me,of course that could be because we were told to arrive once the boat was secured for the day. When my husband and I arrived the computer system was down so the attendant said we were to enter free for the day since he couldn't take payments. The day just got better from here. Our friend, whose birthday it was only had a short wait, but to him it seemed long he said. Once he got to the front he was told we had a wait of approximately twenty minutes. During this time, my husband and I found front parking next to our friend's car, thanks to his wife. When we got in touch with our friends car he had us to bring our coolers and sunblock and we all met up at the restrooms where there were a few picnic tables as well as an awning to block the sun. We took the wait time to play a card game and snack. After a few hands of cards we were called back to check in and we got our life vests and saw a short video as well as signed waivers. Nikko was very helpful in getting us onto our boat and with a 'have a great time!' We were off! Peaceful waters for the day and we even saw friends which was a surprise as they were put with their sailboats. All in all it was a great way to spend the day and we would definitely go again!

Signs were posted with Marion County covid rules and said if you are unmasked then you must stay six feet away from people when outdoors. People seem to be obeying and each group kept their distance. You can rent single or double seat kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, paddle boats, Jon boats (a fishing boat) and pontoon boats. Even though a pontoon boat costs $175 minimum for 2 hours folks were renting them. Kayaks were the most popular rental and they had more than enough of them to not run out. We rented a Jon boat at $50 for the first hour, $70 for two hours. It comes with a Honda 10 hp outboard motor. These boats are brand new and so are the engines. Yes, you have to pull a cord like a lawnmower but being brand new they start on the first or second pull. Real easy! Our boat came with a paddle and seat cushions for all three occupants. Plus life preservers are provided free of charge for everyone renting a boat or board and being out on the water. The only thing missing was an anchor so drifting with the engine off became a little bit of a nuisance. The reservoir area from the Marina to the Bird Sanctuary has a ton of yellow buoys marking lanes for row boats. You don't have to stay out of the lanes but just be aware it is something you have to navigate around. They also rent electric bikes for $20 an hour. But they are not allowed on the trails. Check out their web site for discounts and coupons because I missed out. All of their staff was friendly and helpful. And they take into consideration many people are doing these things for the first time. I heard, "take your time" often. Safety was a priority with them.

We had…read morenever been on a boat together before, and I was kind of wondering what I had gotten ourselves into when we stepped aboard. The thoughts running through my head included: How the heck does a boat work? How am I going to shuttle us along safely when I've never driven a boat before? And other anxious boating thoughts. But luckily, Paradise makes it easy to rent a vessel and take it out on the lake, even if you've never driven a boat before. First, when you book your reservation, you are directed to watch a long video about the dos and don't of boating on a lake. Then, the kind people at Paradise go over the rules again when you're there before you shuttle off. It turns out that boating isn't super difficult, as long as you follow some common-sense rules! And also, always wear a life jacket! We rented a pontoon, which is great if you have kids with you because this vessel has a canopy that provides lots of shade. Kids can't be in the sun all day, you know! The pontoons also have lots of storage space so you have places to put all of your snacks and extra supplies. We spent about three hours out on the lake, and by the end of the journey, I felt like I was almost a boating pro! Renting from Paradise was a great experience from start to finish, and I'll definitely be renting from them again the next time we want to spend time boating on Lake Monroe.

They require you watch a video online about boat safety and take a test to record the results proving you watched the video. After three years of these tests I finally scored a perfect test score! The staff is always courteous, friendly and very helpful. The boats come fueled and clean. You do a quick walk around and makes notes of any prior damage so you don't get dinged. They always go through all of the features with you, tell you some tips for safe handling and take the time to answer all your questions.
