If you are concerned about dentists 'upselling' you and finding many more problems than you thought were possible.. Dr. Murphy is here to save the day! Her and her staff are informative, efficient and only do what is needed. She switched my xrays to once every 2 years so I wouldn't have to pay for unnecessary xrays, and they gave me whitening trays at no charge when my Zoom whitening didn't turn out how I had hoped. Going to the dentist has been a very traumatic experience for me. I'm skeptical of the way the practice has gone, and have left a number of dentists feeling upsold and deceived. I went most of my life having no cavities and after leaving home for college went several years without seeing a dentist. The hack I went to told me I had 13 cavities. Fortunately, I sought a second opinion before letting him excavate my mouth. My next dentist told me I had one cavity but gum disease and had me coming in frequently. His assistant was constantly trying to sell me expensive treatments so I went elsewhere, where the new dentist told me I had 7 cavities. To get such wildly different counsel from professionals shattered my confidence and trust in dentistry. I can't begin to share how grateful I am to have found Dr. Murphy, who has rebuilt my trust in knowing there are competent and HONEST dentists. She will tell you what you need and perform no unnecessary procedures on your teeth. She does not default to tearing up your mouth, so you know if she does tell you that you need something done, it's because it's critical to your oral health and will be beneficial to avoiding worse damage in the future. She is conservative in her approach and frank and honest in her assessments. Her and her staff are very professional and kind and the office is pristine. Wow! Am I ever happy that I changed dentists and am now a patient with Dr. Murphy. My prior dentist told me I needed to have extensive work done that would have cost well over $5,000. That is when I decided I needed another dentist. After reading the positive reviews on Yelp about Dr. Murphy, I decided to make the change. My first appointment included a full dental exam and a cleaning that was done by Dr. Murphy. Her office was able to secure my dental records from my prior dentist. She concluded my teeth are in great shape, I should continue my current dental hygiene, that I have no dental problems, and to come back for a cleaning in another six months. Thank goodness I left the prior dentist and didn't waste thousands of dollars on unnecessary treatment. Dr. Murphy and her staff are friendly and competent. I had a full exam and cleaning, I usually leave the dentist feeling sore and in a bit of pain. Not this time! I was referred to Dr. Murphy by another dentist when I moved to San Diego from Los Angeles. From the first time I saw her Dr. Murphy wanted to crown one of the molars that I had been warned would need a crown at some point in time. I declined to have this crown done, but a year later I experienced a hot/cold-induced pain in another quadrant. Dr. Murphy said I needed a crown on the molar which had a large amalgam filling and was located at the site of the pain. I consented to having this crown done, but weeks later, even after placement of the permanent crown, the area was just as temperature-sensitive and painful as before the crown was done. Dr. Murphy told me the crown was too high and she needed to grind it down a bit. Weeks later the pain was still there so she then suggested I try Sensodyne toothpaste, which did help ameliorate the pain. I was not happy. She'd markedly rounded off the edges of the top of the gold crown. I asked her why she didn't recommend trying Sensodyne both before doing the crown and/or before grinding the crown down. She said the crown needed doing, blah, blah, blah. She kept wanting to put a crown on the other molar, but I already had the sense that she liked to push crowns so I kept declining. Then I started experiencing an intermittent dull ache in the area of the crown she had done. This discomfort appeared to be localized to the tooth in front of the crown. Dr. Murphy proclaimed this tooth to be hitting too hard against the corresponding tooth on the upper jaw. She wanted to grind the bite surface enamel of this tooth down, but I refused. I paid for a consultation visit with my previous dentist in LA. He checked the gap between the crown and it's mating molar and demonstrated to me that there was a significant gap. He advised me that what Dr. Murphy was trying to do was the equivalent of sawing off each of the legs off a table, one at a time, to try and stop it wobbling. The teeth all work as a unit, he explained, and what she's done was grind too much of the crown off so that now the adjacent tooth was hitting too hard against its corresponding tooth on the upper jaw. My previous dentist said I only have two options, either (1) continue to live with the discomfort or (2) he could remove the crown and redo it. He recommended to me that I live with the discomfort until it becomes intolerable and then I will have to have the crown redone. He advised me to find another dentist. Having found another dentist I asked his opinion. He essentially mirrored what my Los Angeles dentist had said, i.e., the crown that Dr. Murphy wanted to do was unnecessary at present and the large amalgam filling was in good condition. He also said that grinding the enamel off the bite surface didn't make any sense because the teeth would adjust over time even though too much of the crown had been ground off. read more

Dr. Murphy does a great job at providing skilled dentistry without the "hard sell". But what drove me to write this review was an experience I had last weekend. A crown popped off when I was flossing Friday night. I called Dr. Murphy at about 9pm to ask what to do. I didn't expect a call back until maybe the next day, but five minutes later she called to give me all the info. She asked if I was in pain, and told me that if it was bothering me she could meet me at her office over the weekend to fix the crown! But it wasn't hurting so I told her Monday morning would be fine. She made me an appointment for first thing on Monday then and there. The office itself is very customer friendly, with a fully stocked fridge of water bottles, tons of different magazines (which are always organized), and very comfortable and cute furniture.
