I was here looking for fountain pens, and they have a decent selection (back of the shop, left side, in the cases). The staff weren't super knowledgeable about the items, and they didn't have what I needed, but it's a good shop. Come here if you are looking for Parker, Sheaffer, Cross or Lamy fountain pens. Oh my god! Do you have any idea how long I have been looking for a stationery store like this?! Seriously, I was thrilled like a kid when I stumbled upon this shop today. They have such a wonderful variety of all kinds of eclectic and practical stuff you'd want. I particularly loved their huge variety of loose single sheet letter writing papers and envelopes. This is just a fabulous, well-stocked, go-to store for the majority of your office needs. It also carries a surprising array of household items like key covers, travel equipment, and unique personal gift items. You may even find hard-to-track-down old school or variant sorts of merchandise. Ask yourself, "Just how many types of paper protectors ARE there in the world?!" Help is consistently friendly, never pushy, don't be put off by thick accents. However, I will always love them for having Palamino pencils in stock after my post office lost them and did not give one flying intercourse! This place is like Super Longs: they have (nearly) everything you didn't even know you needed: graph paper notebooks, pens and pencils galore, handsome certificates if you wanted to make a gag gift for a friend, cards, paper, and random goodies. The upstairs "accordion file" room is life-changing. Do you have an accordion file? No? Where do you keep your "SAVE THIS IN A FIRE" papers? Oh, you keep those in a safe? You are no fun. After making some cards of my own, I went out in search of envelopes and ended up here! The moment I walked in, I was greeted by a very nice woman who immediately offered her assistance. I asked her about envelopes and then she instructed me to go upstairs where I would be helped by someone else. I went upstairs (yes, this place is surprisingly big!) and sure enough I was helped by another kind lady. After leading me to look at their selection, she patiently waited for me and then rung me up. All in all, this was such a pleasant and efficient experience. It is truly a hidden gem in the city with a wide selection of office supplies, cards, and all sorts of stationary needs! Plus, everyone is so kind and it definitely gives off a mom and pops store kind of vibe - this makes me even more inclined to support them. Came here a couple years ago, In search of some decent "not-made-in-China" pens. Well, I will say their pen selection was decent, at first, but as I kept looking (and only finding mediocre and common "fine" pens), I soon realized that their selection was "limited" - for lack of word(s). I then sought out the services of the nearest sales representative, but to no avail. I told him: "I'm looking for your finest, needlepoint pens, preferably Japanese or German made". He was kind and polite, but that was it. He went on to show me average Pilot/Uni-Ball/Pentel .07 mm ( I did say "finest" - less than .05mm)! What's more, they were all conical, and not needlepoint (like I had requested). I did not want to be crass and rude, so I thanked him for his help, but I knew then that this place did not have what I wanted. At last, feeling disappointed, I continued my search, looking for directions to the Maido stationary shop in Japantown. At least there, there is a tea shop next door! read more

Why all the 4-5 stars . . sentimentalism? Save your time & money and either shop Staples, Office Max/Depo or online. This place is like an over-priced, under-stocked wax museum, where the workers seem to have traveled through time from 1974. OK, fine, the employees are fettered, the inventory over-priced, and "selection" redefines the word . . but it's a local merchant, right? And we should look past the warts and kiss the frog because our cup-o-guilt wouldn't taste the same unless we did, right? lol! The time you spend reading this yarn, and the time it took me to write it, will start paying dividends immediately. 1. I get off BART at Montgomery. I want to get a pencil sharpener. One that works, instead of breaking the lead and making a mess. Note: Yes, pencil sharpener . . I appreciate classic writing implements, paper, notebooks, etc., as much as the next guy/gal - so, Patrick's is a natural . . disaster, yes! 2. I think, "Hey, Patrick's probably has the best selection for some dated thing like this, plus, they're bound to have the coolest, latest one that all the pencil-geeks worship. Looking around, I notice Patrick's has the same selection as any where else . . no awesome Palomino, nothing pencil-geeks would look at in awe. However, since I'm there, and they have an electric one from X-Acto (yes, they make pen-like knives too, red flag #1) for $30 . . what the heck, I'll take it (file under "seemed like a good idea at the time"). 4. Walk 5 blocks to the office. 5. At my desk, discover the sharpener doesn't work. 6. Check everything: Battery orientation of the "+" and "-" marks, ensure the "safety feature" isn't preventing operation, check the "receptacle" cover, etc., all to no avail. The X-acto from Patricks (formerly known as "Hell"), doesn't work. 7. During the time (formerly known as "Lunch"), I walk the 10 block round-trip, but am told to come back later because the manager is at lunch - must be nice! a. (that's right, any of the 8 wax museum look-alikes can take your money, but none can refund it - this is like Hotel California). b. (why not stop by on the way home? They close at 5:30 - the only people that leave the office before 5:30, no longer have jobs). This sick joke gets even ironic, because there's a Staples 2 blocks from my office. I bought a SD card for $80 a month ago, and returned it later that day without question by a kid with tattoos and acne. Patrick's combined employee age exceeds the average tree in Muir Woods, but they can't refund $30 for a broken pencil sharpener either. lol! Don't listen to the sentimentalists. If you want to see Patrick's future, look no further then next door, to the long-closed, boarded up "Grant's Tobacco". . . . chapter 5, chapter 6 . . . lol! read more

Frankly, I'm surprised to see so many 5 star reviews of this place. The "help" (I hesitate to call them that, since they dont..) is fairly knowledgeable, but getting any info out of them is like pulling whale teeth.. (impossible) To top it off, I went in today looking for a Rhodia Webnotebook and after searching the store I found the rhodia stuff in front (they moved it) and they actually had the notebooks.. But, and this is a HUGE but, they are charging $5 OVER MSRP!!! Asking $25 for a notebook (rhodia competes with Moleskine) is just dumbstupid. The MSRP is $20 and you can get them online for $18.. In an age where the B&M M&P stores are competing with the online vendors, they need to learn that its NOT OK to charge more than MSRP on a product.. Considering that we're in an economic slump and SF/California charges a ton for taxes (yet still can't figure out how to not screw this state up...) its easier to get these online, you can avoid tax and in come cases get free shipping.. Their attitude and high prices are going to kill their company.. And I won't feel the least bit sorry.. I tried to support a local business and walked away feeling like I need a tub of Vaseline after their royal reaming. read more

Always a pleasant experience at this lovely store. I work at a law firm and our stamp requests are typically rush and custom. The staff at Patrick & Co. have always been very patient and accommodating and understand the client's needs. No request has been too difficult to tackle. Aside from the stellar service with a smile, your inner stationery geek will certainly feel giddy while browsing through their incredible selection of office or school supplies. I dunno know about you but I just love a good pen. And this store had plenty to choose from. Moleskin notebooks, folders in all the colors of the rainbow...I'm so glad the company I work for sends me here! Oh and Sharpies and highlighters in odd random colors you won't find just anywhere. Okay, if you are into pens, like every other OCD Type-A Freak, this place has two full sections of open pens for you try and buy. If they are out of something she WILL get it for you as soon as possible, you don't have to wait for stocking day, she will specially order something for you and you don't even have to ask. Several Yelps have mentioned that walking into this store is a bit like walking into the past, and I agree. The only things missing are creaking floorboards. I dropped off an order for a rubber address stamp to these people because when I called a nice woman told me they would have it ready in three or four days.. two weeks later after sending my assistant down to inquire because nobody seemed to have any idea on the phone.. they tell me that the rubber stamp person has been sick for SEVEN WEEKS!!!. why not tell me that before I place and pay for an order??.. I have called and spoken to the "master printer" who says he will try to get it made today, but he told me he would call back in 5 or 10 minutes.. that was an hour ago, so I thought I'd kill some time and write a review.. stay away.. this place is a joke!! read more

I went to Papyrus today in search of 'old school' place cards for a special event. I was disappointed with the 3 pricey yet bland Crane options they had available, so the saleswoman kindly directed me to Patrick & Co. I must have walked past this place dozens of times and never knew what lay inside. Wow! It is a veritable treasure trove of all things office and stationery. I'm not sure how old the place is, but the store does show some age. That said, the staff was perfectly helpful, the selection extensive and the prices reasonable. I also really loved the option to buy single sheets of card stock/envelopes/etc. Stores like these are a dying breed in a technologically-advanced world. But I'd choose P&Co for office supplies any day over Staples. And for those out there who still appreciate tangible methods of correspondence, this is your place. read more

That being said, I found what I needed both times I went in and the pen refill section is pretty extensive. I'm a bit surprised at all the high ratings on here. I work right around the corner and have stopped in a few times when in desperate need of supplies, but personally I would not recommend this place. First, maybe it's just me, but I find this store quite drab. I normally like browsing in stationery stores, but this place seems a bit depressing to me (maybe it's the lighting?). Also, this place is way overpriced. I was in there yesterday looking for a plastic accordion folder. All they had were thin paper ones, with a pricetag of $18! Are you kidding me? Who in their right mind pays $18 for a folder? I ended up walking around the corner to Daiso and found a better folder for $1.50 ($1.63 after tax). Everytime I'm in this store I wish I could be inside a Target store instead. read more
