I really wanted ice cream and like the coffee shops we explore in small downtowns, we also love to find local ice cream shops. At first, this one disappointed me. They had a lot of good-looking flavors and even some vegan ones. I'm not vegan (anymore), but I still like to limit my dairy intake, so I got excited at first when I saw oat milk based ice cream... especially in my favorite flavor - peanut butter & chocolate! BUT... they display their gorgeous waffle cones... FULL of gluten and crumbs... right on. top. of. the ice cream. I think the guy behind the counter saw me start to panic a little when he asked if I'd like a taste and I responded with, "I can't - these are contaminated." I was ready to choose a flavor in another cabinet where there weren't any cones, but the cones probably get moved around in those cases... so I wasn't sure if I could trust any of the flavors. He was a little hard to understand over the noisy patrons (kids ‍), but eventually I realized he said they keep each flavor in the back in clean containers for those with severe allergies. Cue HAPPY FACE!! He went to the back and got the oat milk flavor, then he even washed off the scoop before scooping mine out. I REALLY appreciate the extra effort! So if you have allergies, don't panic... gluten, dairy, nut, whatever it is... just let them know and ask for the good stuff in the back. Ever since I moved to Valparaiso, I have discovered there are 2 homemade ice cream parlors that might have a rivalry between them. I even ask people when I meet them to break the ice, "Pat's or Valpo"? I like Valpo but I'm all in on Team Pat. There is a sign outside that says this is the best ice cream made in Wisconsin because it is made with rich Wisconsin Cream. The first time I had her ice cream, I thought it was among the best ice cream I've ever had. I went with the Zoreo, which was the Zanzibar chocolate mixed in with Oreos. That's like the perfect ice cream for me! Today, I had to try the Zanzibar chocolate shake! It's like a rich, dark chocolate. It was pretty exquisite at $5.50. Pat took my order and she was very friendly and interested in me. She asked me my name and we connected a little bit over my career and her son's career. They use too much milk or not enough ice cream, depending on how you look at it. If you're looking for good ice cream, you won't go wrong with Pat's. Pat's has been part of the community for years and I wish her many more years doing what she enjoys.. handing out smiles one cone at a time. The ice cream there is freakin amazing, I definitely have my favorites, however any flavor you may choose will be delicious...and be aware Pat's will spoil you for anything you're going to find available locally in my opinion & definitely not going to get this quality from the supermarket. I had emergency surgery a year or so back & God Bless her, she was closing for the season but stayed late so I could get my ice cream to keep me happy throughout the winter months ahead. She even sent a bag of cones free of charge to help consume the deliciousness! Visiting my sister in Valpo where it's crazy hot and humid so I was really craving some ice cream and popped into Pat's and really enjoyed myself! The staff is suuuuper friendly and patient with our sampling, and they even told us to bring our dog inside and fed her treats! I ended up getting the passion fruit ice cream, which was really tart and refreshing (perfect for summer weather!) and my sister got the key lime pie ice cream which she says was a little tart and creamy. This is a staple in downtown Valpo. As mentioned before, they have an interesting selection of flavors. My husband can't help but order Fat Elvis, being a fan of the flavor and the musician. They have all the necessary flavors that kids gravitate towards. Why do I prefer Pat's over other local options? I tend to choose flavors for what I consider the mature palate. For starters, the ice cream here is decent (but nothing special) and the service was fine. However, the place has a creepy, cheap vibe, condescending and ancient signage and paper clutter everywhere. They also appear to be selling old sunglasses left by customers which is both disturbing and unhygienic.The decor is a bunch of strange, Hobby Lobby-esque paintings which do not go with ice cream parlor decor at all. Additionally, there is an additional charge for credit card purchases under $5 which they are technically not allowed to do according to the credit card companies themselves. The explanation for the disorganization, other than the amateurish POS situation, is because the customers are getting randomly served without order or reason. Example: As Pat was taking our order, she started taking another order from a second customer, then she handed her second order off to another emoloyee, who was already serving someone else entirely. Get some signs that say "line starts here" and "pay here" Then server 1 person at a time, like every single place in the world.. Also, outside of the ridiculous accusations, let's talk about the icecream. It is not made in house. I understand if you think that's not a big deal but, why would you ever go to Pat's when 2 blocks away is Valpo Velvet, arguably the best made icecream ever. I went there and they told me there is a $5 minimum for cards but before I paid for mine my friend paid for hers and her total was $3.50 ish and she paid for it with a card. Then it was my turn my total was the same and they told me I couldn't use my card because of the "minimum" so I had to buy more then what I wanted. Then my other friend was after me and his total was $4 ish and boom the minimum wasn't there anymore and he could use his card. This is the only ice cream I will eat at Valpo. I am super sensitive to any additives that are so popular to sneak into ice creams and this place honestly puts nothing in that doesn't belong in there ( unlike Cold Stone and Dairy Queen). It is going to cost a bit more but unless you're an everyday triple scoop type of customer, it won't break your bank. And if you are that customer... well...there are more serious issues to deal with than paying too much for ice cream.
