Beautiful setting, but the service was soooooo bad! The owner popped her head into the dining area once in a while, but never came to our table to ask us if we needed anything. The food might have been good if it was not cold. It took over an hour to get our food and the server was scattered and apologized throughout the experience. I've had two horrible restaurant experiences in the past 3 years and this is one of them. Even if I lived in Perry, I would say it's not worth the drive. Bummer . . . I have not been to this restaurant for over 17 years so wasn't sure what to expect. The atmosphere is everything I remembered, such a good architechural renovation and the ambiance is great. Unfortunately, we had a very bad experience with the food. Our waitress was sweet but clearly new, she didn't ask us what dressing we wanted with our salads so we helped her by telling her incase she needed to put it in with our order. The house soup was beef and barley but when it was delivered it was a cheesey chowder type soup. When we asked for the soup we ordered we were told the soup of the day had been changed, I don't think anyone told our waitress. I ordered garlic parmessan dressing with my salad and got a red pickly thousand island looking dressing; when I asked our waitiress she said she was told it was the garlic parmessan. I asked for a change and the woman who brought it out put it on the table without a word, I am wondering if she worked the kitchen because she wore a purple glove and was not dressed like the wait staff. I ordered a hamburger cooked medium rare and received a piece of charcoal in the shape of a hockey puck in its place. They quickly made it right by replacing the burger with one that was properly cooked. the fact they let the first one leave the kitchen in the first place tells me that quality control is a low priority. Had dinner, with mixed results. Pork loin with mashed sweet potatoes were excellent, fried chicken was great, but the mashed potatoes had way too much salt, and the beef stroganoff had such a strong taste of smoke, we were done after a couple of bites. Tasted like it was doused with liquid smoke, but we were assured it was not. Waitress was kind enough to take it off the bill, and offered complimentary desert. Wow. The owner doesn't care about any Yelp! comments. My wife & I had the most ludicrous service there on Sunday, August 13th, 2017. at approximately 6pm. I am from the farm. Pretty hard to offend me. Food okay. Don't expect more than okay. Which is fine by me. Service was subpar from that if a truck stop on a busy Friday night might cater to. Was seated & waited for wait staff for OVER five minutes. Then waitress appeared without water or at least a drink menu. Waited another ten minutes. Should of walked out then. Ordered food & waited 20 minutes. Which is good if waitress stopped by to check in. She didn't. Food arrived & was serviceable. Don't kid yourselves...this is Perry, Iowa. Nothing you couldn't get in ANY sportsbar. Finished eating & ordered dessert. After waiting for 20 minutes, I tracked down waitress, on foot, & asked for ticket. Waitress said they were busy. At NO TIME were there more than twelve bodies in the restaurant. I inadvertently left the waitress a tip as I was so determined to get out of that place. A hefty tip that undoubtedly was not earned...nor by the atmosphere of this place appreciated. I did message the owner that night in lieu of posting a bad review. It has been over ten days. Here is my review: Go to Casey's...you will get better food AND service. For non-Iowans: Casey's is our favorite gas station. Which is really good. This place...meh. Arrived 1:25 on a Tuesday with a party of two; six people already in the dining area. Took 45 minutes to get our food. Server was making very loud noises the entire time clearing dishes and setting tables. My order was wrong and portion sizes were not worth the price. Water was disgusting. read more

We ate here last weekend and I'm still thinking about our experience. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant and hotel. The menu had a lot of delicious sounding options. We started with the Buffalo cauliflower wings. They were crispy and glazed with a honey/srirracha sauce that had just the right balance. If the cauliflower had been cut into consistently small pieces, this would have been perfect. My dining partner had the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin. It was very tender and flavorful, but was almost bordering on the rare side. It came with a VERY garlicky orzo. I had the scallop cavatelli. The scallops were woefully overcooked. They were dry and rubbery. The pasta had a great flavor, but the sauce had started to break and there was a puddle of melted butter in the bottom of my plate. Service was good. I'll give it another try, but my expection of this place won't be as high as it was for our previous visit. read more

Get the market fish anytime you are here! I've had it the last 5 times I stayed here, and have yet to be disappointed. With a talented Chef like the Hotel Patee has, you can't go wrong. Try finding anything more creative than this guy has to offer in town and you'll be spinning your wheels. Presentation, flavor, palatibility....check, check and check! This restaurant has both horribly disgusting dishes and items that aren't too bad. Everything is over-priced for the quality of food. My girlfriend and I ate here twice while staying at Hotel Pattee. The two experiences were very different; the first was horrible, the second was good. The first experience at the restaurant was absolutely horrendous. They were having a special of blackened tuna with rice and black bean salsa for $18. I ordered this and my girlfriend ordered the $28 New York Strip steak with seasoned veggies and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. I also had the split-pea and ham soup, and my girlfriend had a salad with blue cheese dressing. First off, none of the food was seasoned. There was no salt or pepper on anything. The blue cheese dressing was gross: all liquid and no blue cheese. The soup tasted burnt like it was scraped from the bottom of the pot. There was no ham in the soup, just peas and broth. Our entrees were even worse. The tuna was disgusting. I asked the waitress if it was seared and served rare like it is supposed to be served. When I got it, the tuna was not ahi tuna, cooked all the way through, and had absolutely no seasoning (rice included). My girlfriend's medium-cooked steak was undercooked and served rare with no salt or pepper on it. Her veggies also had no salt or pepper. Her "roasted garlic" mashed potatoes didn't have any garlic flavor at all. They tasted bland, as if they were boiled potatoes mashed with nothing else. When we asked the waitress about the lack of flavor and seasoning, she told us the chef seasoned everything when it was obvious the chef did no such thing. Our second meal was better but not what we expected from the reviews we read. We ordered Spinach Artichoke and Bacon appetizer and the Little Italy Flatbread. The appetizer tasted ok but did not have any artichokes. FYI, it has a bit of a spicy bite. The bread it was served with was crispy on the outside but soggy in the middle. The flatbread pizza was the best thing we ordered at the restaurant. The crust was thin and crispy and the toppings were not too thick. We took the leftovers and ate them later. For this restaurant, cheaper is better. read more

The hotel is very pretty and the art collection is impressive. We ate at the brunch buffet and the food was good but not very interesting. The service was good and the price was reasonable. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars but the atmosphere and the service pushed me over to four. read more

We ate there tonight. I had the sirloin which was delicious and cook just right at medium rare. I had my steak with the Oscar which was not worth the extra money. The lobster was tough and the hollandaise sauce was curdled and too salty. My husband's rib eye was tough. I loved the crispy brussel sprouts. We ordered the "hand sliced" onion rings. Very disappointing. Instead of nice thick onion rings there was a plate piled with a stingy mess - not a "ring" among it. Beautifully decorated dining room. I hope you like Frank Sinatra for that was the main music - but it was unobtrusive. (I did enjoy the occasional very early Bing songs.) read more

Had breakfast with the family here. Between all of us we probably had everything that was on the menu. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Probably the most favorite were the country fried steak and the pain Perdue (French toast). Nice atmosphere in a renovated "old timey" hotel. read more

My husband and I had an early dinner here tonight. We were so disappointed in the experience. Several years ago we attended a private party here at the Hotel Pattee and it was lovely. That next morning we had a very nice breakfast at the Diner. Tonite was a disaster. We each ordered a Manhattan. It was the smallest cocktail I've ever seen, full of ice. We thought, Ok, they just don't know how to make a Manhattan in Perry and chalked it up to that. We each ordered a glass of wine with our dinner. The salad, the soup, then the entrees arrived. The poor server kept apologizing saying she was sorry but the bartender was busy with a private party. Bottom line was, we never got the wine and the entrees were very marginal, and to top that off, they charged $10 each for the tiny Manhattans!! It was a disappointing evening. Unfortunately I would be hesitant to recommend the hotel or the diner. There seems to be no one in particular "in charge" with so well intended young people trying to do their best with an understaffed crew. I don't know who owns the hotel but I think they could have something great going on but I think they need to spend more time onsite to see how guests are being treated.
