It was easy to talk with her and I sought her advice about an ongoing problem I experienced with a particular midwife. (Since she both volunteers and gives massages at ABC, she's well-known there and familiar with its routines/rhythms. This put me at ease because I was a new client.) Margaret's post-partum help with tricky nursing issues proved equally invaluable. Margaret's a skilled licensed massage therapist who specializes in Arvigo Maya abdominal work. I was bigger this time around so the last trimester was tough. Having weekly massages in my last month was such a treat. Her massages were restorative, relieved me of the constant pain and worked to center me. The birth of my 2nd son was highly unusual but through the expert knowledge and skills of Margaret and the rest of my birth team, I experienced a safe and empowered natural birth. My son was born at 10 lbs and face first, quite a rare and challenging presentation. His labor was long and slow (3 days). Once we learned his presentation, we required a transfer to the hospital. We all worked together as a team to make his birth go smoothly and safely. Throughout all of this Margaret remained calm, focused on my well-being, supportive of my decisions, patient, positive and helpful. She answered many questions I had and provided documentation up until delivery day. Let me tell you how happy I am she was there. She was a trooper. From 12pm to 6:30a.m the next morning. she was by my side supporting me and my husband the entire time. My epidural left me with a hotspot across my lower abdomen that was not reached by the epidural. The pain for me was intense. She stayed by me offering breathing guidance,rubbing my back and offered peppermint oil as I kept becoming very nauseas from the pain. I had a very hard time and could not have done it without her. Eventually a c section had to be done as I stalled in dialating enough and could no longer take the pain. Ashley was there again after the c section checking up on me and baby. I appreciate her so much and will be forever grateful to her.

Our visits leading up to it she answered all my questions, she listened to my concerns but more importantly made me excited about birth even after having a traumatic birth with my previous child! She made it very clear this was my birth and wanted the birthing plan to be everything my husband and I wanted! However the one thing that ment the most is she took time out to check on us not just before upcoming appointments she kept track of but after our miscarriage we had to deliver out sweet baby boy. She wanted to know every detail that we were willing to share and was ok with the ones we wanted to leave out. Janisa gave me emotional support, she encouraged me to do a photoshoot! She set up everything did my make up picked me up dropped me off fed me lol! She also gave me tools to deal with all of my emotions. I had a phobia of hospitals because of the high death rates of black women giving birth and my own mothers passing. Just a lot to unpack. She not only was my doula, she was my photographer, hairstylist, makeup artist (she's really great btw!) she set up my nursery, she was accessible when I had meltdowns and baby daddy issues she helped me navigate everything and provided resources. She gave me homework to do to protect my peace and prepare for my baby to come earth side. Janisia worked with my midwife and chiropractor, and gave me topics to ask my doctors because I had dual care. This was extremely helpful because you don't know what you don't know and during a pandemic so many things were new and scary! Janisia also did Soo many things to help me mentally prepare for the baby, how to use my stroller. This was huge I didn't know what I was doing lol she was a big help! Natural remedies for heartburn. Janisia also helped me learn how to put the baby in abs out of the car seat and operate my stroller. She wasn't able to physically attend my birth and had a backup I was nervous about that and was kinda sad but she and the replacement were there. Janisa was on FaceTime checking in every step of the way and her back up was amazing as well!
