Cascais is, unfortunately, quite far from the heart of Lisbon, but I was thankfully planning to make a trip out there as part of a tour group (shoutout to Buendia's Sintra / Cascais tours) so had the perfect opportunity to check out Sacolinha's giant pastry case. My mom and I decided to split an assortment, which included two mini bola de berlim, as well as two different types of castanhas de ovos. The bola were lovely; they were super soft and pillowy, and the fillings (one was egg custard, the other nutella, I think) were both great. They were a smidge too sweet and did slightly remind me of American donuts, but they were a bit softer and less overwhelmingly sweet than their US counterparts. My favorite, though, had to be the castanhas de ovos. I already love chestnuts, so having the world's best nut translated into a dessert was a dream come true. They were so delicious that my mom and I had to come back to buy a box of six to bring home with us. The store itself is a pretty simple, but large pastaleria. It tends to get pretty crowded, but there's, thankfully, ample indoor and outdoor seating. You order up at the counter, and then they'll log your order onto a standard card, which you can later take up to the register to cash out. It's a bit of an odd system, but honestly makes the ordering way more efficient, since you don't have to wait for everyone's credit cards to process or cash to get counted, and you can go up to the register to pay at your leisure.

Staff were generally friendly although the cashier muttered something in Portuguese at me when I paid with $50 bill for 2 pastries. That's the only bill I had left as this place is cash only. I tried a beef empanada and a ham and cheese pastry. Honestly I felt it was underwhelming and the ham and cheese one was not good at all. Perhaps I should have tried something sweet. In anycase location and ambience were nice and easy access given located right on the main road.

The staff's English is limited; we lucked out by being there when the most English-proficient waiter was working. That said, a few words and a lot of hand gestures will easily get you by. The real plus to this bakery is its location. If the weather is nice, grab a coffee/pastry and sit out on the front patio in the morning to read a book, skim the morning paper, or simply people watch. The patio is perfectly positioned to get the most out of the morning sun while also being far enough from the main hustle of Alameda Combatentes da Grande Guerra with its market and many shops. They keep your tab on an RFID card that they'll drop on your table. Just go up to the counter with it at the end to pay. There are public/free restrooms in the park if you need them but I imagine they also have them inside.

My favorite spot. Honestly it's one of those spots I don't want to write a review about, because I…read morewant to keep it a secret. But here goes, because "sharing is caring". Food/drinks are self-service here, which means you straight walk in to the cafe and order to your left. You'll take your drinks (coffee, etc.), and they'll bring the food out to you. They have a menu in both Portuguese and English, but the menu isn't always visible so just ask them for one and they'll pull one right up from the counter. I like their Dutch Sandwiches (I think those were what they called it), which is basically like flatbread sandwiches. The sandwiches and salads are prepared onsite, surprisingly - you wouldn't think they can actually cook much in such a small kitchen/counter space. Their pastries are ok too, but I don't think the pastries are prepared there. Note that "cafe" in Portugal basically means an espresso. You can also order your coffee decaf, but it'll still be an espresso. If you want something milder, like the American cup o' joe, ask for an Abatanado - I didn't see it on the menu in this cafe, but usually other Portuguese cafes have this option. They do have Garoto, which they call "latte", but really it's just the same espresso with maybe three teaspoons of milk (atleast it tasted that way) - don't expect to find the typical latte you would get in the States. If you're okay with very milky coffee (milkier than the standard American latte), order a Galao (usually about three quarters of the cup is milk) or Meia de Leite ("Half Milk" = half of the cup is milk). The cafe is pretty small, about 5~6 picnic tables outside, where you can see the Dune and the Ocean from afar. They always keep a bowl full of water for dogs, and hence my family calls it the "dog cafe". They also have indoor seating, but it tends to be a little warmer and a bit stuffy. Still, nice natural colors. Parking is a bit tricky here, especially the way out - which is typical of parking lots in Portugal, since they seem to have smaller individual car spaces than the ones in California usually do. Be careful not to scratch any other car on your way out! Tip: You can walk down the dune from this cafe. Just follow where the people are going, or follow the signs! It's a narrow walk, but quite nice. Many people either jog or walk with their dogs.
