Honestly, I was surprised how smoothly it went -- that's a lot at once. But he and his entire staff are very professional, friendly, and understanding of how nerve-racking this can be. I was referred to Dr. McMahon's office for a consultation on a bottom tooth that needed an extraction and implant in July. This particular tooth needed to go years ago, but of course I put it off. On September 12th I had an extraction on an upper tooth in preparation for a bridge (less costly than an implant), anyway this caused a severe infection on that bottom tooth. It was time for me to face the fact that the time has come for this tooth to also go. I called Dr. McMahon's office on the 17th and they got me in on emergent basis for the 23rd. I did not realize that I would also be getting the implant and extraction the same day, but to my surprise that is what happened. Dr. McMahon and his staff are stellar!! It is the next day and I have hardly any pain. The procedure itself was done in less than an hour and Dr. McMahon even called to check in on me that night which was a very nice touch. I was referred to Dr. Tiernan's office by my dentist for a tooth extraction and bone graft. I went in for a consult. Dr. Tiernan and all his staff were friendly and welcoming. The lady who did my x-rays saw I was in pain with my tooth. She was kind and got me medicine to make me comfortable during my visit. Dr. Tiernan even provided me gauze and clove oil to help with my tooth pain in the meantime until I was able to be scheduled for the dental work. He was very informative and answered any and all questions that I had regarding the first phase of my dental work. The front office staff were able to answer and provide information for financing and insurance coverage. I felt the pricing was very reasonable and broken down to easily understand especially with this being my first experience with new dental insurance. I left feeling very confident and with a clear understanding of the dental work that was going to be done. Yesterday I went for my tooth extraction and bone graft. Dr. Tiernan and his staff who did my work yesterday were efficient with the IV, sedation, and dental work being completed yesterday. I felt nothing, and they were set up and ready to go, so I barely had any time to think or get nervous. They estimated an hour I was done within 45 minutes. I have experienced very little pain or discomfort. Dr. Tiernan even called me yesterday evening to see how I was doing. I go back in a few months for the next phase of my dental work to get an implant. I look forward to returning and feel at ease with the high level of quality dental that they provide. I will recommend Dr. Tiernan and his staff to everyone I know. He gives patients access to be apart of their dental choices and knowing what options they have. I choose Dr. Tiernan due to his extensive experience and his recommended approach. Surgery went great! Billing was very straight forward. I paid out of pocket for my surgery given my insurance didn't let me pick my Surgeon. I valued the quality of Surgeon over the cost. They gave me a quote at my consultation. We were referred here by my son's orthodontist to have a tooth exposed and a bracket attached to said tooth. The Ortho sent all information and x-rays and we made the appointment to have the work done. We show up and are told that it is only a consultation. Dr. Teirnan glances in my sons mouth for about 10 seconds, repeats what our orthodontist already told us, and sends us on our way. At the actual appointment, weeks later, we pay our copay which is a couple hundred dollars, my son has the tooth exposed and that was that. Or so we thought. A couple of months later we receive a bill for another couple hundred dollars. Dr. Teirnan's billing department then tells me that our initial co-payment was only an estimate. I have never had a dentist or doctors office not be able to tell me exactly what our share of cost was going to be before the appointment. Never. The inability and refusal of this office to make a phone call to our insurance company and go over each service and how much will be paid is incompetence at best. They also made sure to bill an additional $100 for that 10 second, completely unnecessary, "consultation". After calling to discuss these charges and being spoken to like I'm an idiot, I put the check in the mail. This was less than 3 weeks after receiving the first bill. A week later I received another bill with an additional $3.15 of interest for being over 90 days late. How can I be 90 days late when you only sent the bill for the first time a few weeks ago?? I will send them their $3.15, but I will never use this business again and I hope this review prevents others from going there and having to deal with their rude and dishonest business practices. read more

Dr. Tiernan and his staff are very well organized, adhere to all safety and CDC/local and state orders. His staff are very helpful, clear communicators and explained timelines and processes. The procedure went very well. His dental nurse reviewed the post op orders, home care and provided the supplies needed at no additional cost. Worst managed dentist office I've ever been to. Not to mention the fact that they quoted me $3000 and then all of a sudden I'm faced with a $6000 bill. Appointment was made for a certain time and they called and asked if I could come in early, arrived early and waited until almost the original appointment time before I left. Yes, dr tiernan likes to talk about all the property he has and what a good father he is all the while ignoring his patient's needs. Will ask my dentist for another referral to finish the work! In my opinion, this dentist is horrible. We considered going to him to have him remove our teenage daughters wisdom teeth. A dentist had referred him and I called to find out about talking to this person about the surgery. I was encouraged by his staff to come and and talk with him. In the consultation about his race cars and race track at his house and how much money he has. He proceeded to insult my referring dentist too. (She doesn't refer him anymore, as I understand) He had us sign forms that said "these negative things could happen" and then proceeded to tell us that those things wouldn't happen. When we left the "consultation" we were told the amount it would cost to have him remove our daughters wisdom teeth. Didn't make us feel comfortable at all. We decided not to go to him and found a wonderful Oral surgeon. A month later, I get a bill from Tiernan for a consultation. I was not informed of this cost before the consultation. I spoke to their office manager and she says they don't inform patients about the costs, the amounts or that there will be costs, period. I asked how they decide the amount that they will charge for services, since they had not spoken to the customer, prior to charging them. They said they do now and have always charged what they charge as if the customer had insurance and the amount that they would charge insurance. I asked her if there is not agreement, a meeting of the minds, or the patient is not informed of a price to "meet the doctor", how do they feel it is okay to do this . I was told that it wasn't open to discussion, it is the patients responsibility to know that the doctor is only available for hire and if they didn't like the amount, they should think to ask before they talk to the doctor. I explained to that he had not preformed any service. I asked to speak to Tiernan and he refused multiple times. I went into the office and he refused. Early on, I had asked the office manager about their public relations and how they felt about having such an unhappy customer, I was told " we don't have to worry about it, there will always be plenty more kids who will need his wisdom teeth pulled". They don't have to worry about their being more customers. They were willing to take that risk. I was told if I didn't pay the bill immediately then they would take action. I told them that my attorney said it was not legal bill. They said they didn't care, they would send it to collections if I didn't pay it that day. I told them that would effect my credit so I felt like it was blackmail, she said, oh well, pay it then. So, I got to pay to have Tiernan tell me all about his miserable life. Unbelievable. I am planning on suing for the return of the fee I was forced to pay and any other charges. I wouldn't send anyone to Tiernan. read more

I had an emergency tooth extraction ten days ago. My dentist recommended Dr. Tiernan, saying that he was one of the best oral surgeons in the region. He was right! Dr. Tiernan was funny, engaging and vivacious. He didn't talk down to you. We had a great conversation before and during the procedure. I felt no pain even though I was awake, had very little bleeding and was on my feet and functioning immediately afterwards. Granted, having a tooth removed isn't exactly fun when you're awake. It can be very loud.. but I certainly didn't walk out traumatized and was really impressed with the kindness of the staff. They are clearly seasoned, yet kind, professionals. He inspired so much confidence that I've scheduled to have my wisdom teeth removed later this month. Another oral surgeon didn't want to touch them but Dr. Tiernan took a new, high resolution xray that showed exactly the roots were not wrapped around the jawbone like the first surgeon said. The job shouldn't be nearly as challenging as the first surgeon though it would be. I'll past again after the big job! Update - Dr. Tiernan removed my wisdom teeth a week ago and, again, I have no complaints.. in fact, I have no memory of the experience at all other than walking into a procedure room, sitting in a chair, Dr. Tiernan walking in and talking briefly and then, whammo, I was waking up the procedure over and done. I was home 90 minutes after he began, resting comfortably and, thanks to pain medication, feeling little discomfort. Now, granted, I've never had an extraction like this.. and I have to say that my mouth is still fairly irritated and uncomfortable at times. I definitely needed several days off work because talking was uncomfortable. But, honestly, the easiest part of the whole procedure was walking into Dr. Tiernans office and having the teeth removed. The hardest part is just eating soft foods afterwards and getting used to the weird gaps in my mouth. So, again, I have to recommend him highly!! read more

I saw Dr Tiernan twice, each time for an infected wisdom tooth (I'm terrible about getting them pulled) Each time he was courteous, reassuring, and amazingly quick. The partially impacted tooth took maybe 10 minutes to pull and the gums were intact. I was mystified. I DO still need to get my top wisdom teeth pulled but I'm dragging my feet on that (No offense to the dr though) read more

Dr. Paul Teirnan is great. He has performed surgery to remove wisdom teeth for both of my sons and now has removed 2 collapsed teeth in my mouth. I called his office and they set up an appointment for me. Before I ever came to see him, one tooth became infected and my face began to swell. This was on a Friday afternoon and my appointment was not until Monday. I called his service and he immediately called me back and placed me on antibiotics. He followed me through the weekend and texted me to see how I was doing and if my condition had changed. I sent him an image of my face and he reassured me that the antibiotics would help and he could relieve the problem on Monday. After one day the pain was gone. Truly a great dentist and caring person! read more

I came to Dr. Tiernan 9 months pregnant with horrible wisdom tooth pain. I originally wanted to wait until I had the baby to get them pulled, but the pain was too intense. I was very nervous for the pain during the extraction and especially the pain after because I couldn't take any strong pain killers because of the pregnancy. Dr. Tiernan did such an amazing job during the extraction. I just had local anesthesia and the whole thing took about 10 minutes and didn't hurt at all. I didn't even have to take any Tylenol for the healing period. My husband has to get his pulled and he will definitely be going to Dr. Tiernan. read more

I got all four of my wisdom teeth out this morning! I don't remember a thing! Woke up confused that they had finished already. I've read some comments about Paul being rude or boasting about money but that is completely not the case. I struggle with severe anxiety and Paul put me at ease right away. He's extremely nice and amazing to talk to. I took two advil's when i got home and haven't had any pain! I was actually up and about all day today and feel completely fine. I was out all surgery so I did get nauseous twice at home but it was super little and felt fine right after. My mouth stopped bleeding after a few hours and it actually looks like one of the holes is completely closed. I had little swelling in the cheeks and that went away in a few hours. There was also a comment about him not telling you about the extra x-ray but again that's not true, he tells you right away that it is optional and you're insurance will not cover it. I did the x-ray because my teeth were pushing on a nerve that could cause numb lip and chin and in some cases it can be permanent. Did the x-ray and he was very happy because it helped him a lot! Would rather pay a little extra for an x-ray then deal with a numb mouth for the rest of my life! Overall would highly recommend Paul to everyone!! Him and his staff are wonderful! He called the same night to check in and see if everything was okay. Couldn't be happier :) p.s- i also told all my friends about my great experience and they were all jealous because their recovery's times were at least two and a half weeks and had to deal with horrible symptoms the whole time. Several days before writing this I awoke to a dull, throbbing pain emanating from the rear of my mouth. My regular dentist in SF retired and since then I have moved to Santa Rosa. I read some Yelp reviews and scheduled an appointment with a dentist who had great reviews close to my house. Went in, X-ray and exam indicated an infection in my right upper wisdom tooth and extraction was recommended. The "new" dentist did not perform this procedure and Dr. Tiernan's office was called to set up the referral. First available appointment was 6 days away, I took it with the hope something would open up sooner. It did and the next day found me in Dr. Tiernan's office. Affable and exuding confidence my options were clearly explained to me. I was concerned as the tooth to be extracted was all the way back in my mouth. Some Novocain and nitrous oxide and he had that tooth out! No pain! If you need the services of an oral surgeon Dr. Tiernan gets my highest recommendation. read more

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and went to a BBQ on Saturday where no one could tell what my mouth had been through the previous day! My experience with Dr. Tiernan and his staff was the best I've ever had - and I hate getting my teeth worked on. I opted to only use local anesthetic and the worst part was the shots - which wasn't even that bad because they used a numbing cream beforehand. His technique for administering the shots (as well as everything else) was perfect. Yes, it hurt, but nothing I couldn't handle. As far as the oral surgery itself, he is really good at telling you what's going on as he's doing it - Like, "this is what the drill sounds like so it doesn't surprise you", "you'll hear some cracking right now", "get ready for a lot of pressure". It made it SO much easier to endure because I knew exactly what would happen before he did anything. He and his assistant during my procedure were both very good at asking me if I was ok, if I needed any breaks, etc. The communication between them and to me was exceptional. His staff is so sweet and answered all my questions about after care in depth. Dr. Tiernan even called me that night to make sure I was ok! Barely any swelling at all, I didn't anything stronger than Advil after the first day. I did one of the pain regimens they recommended: Got home, took 2 Ibuprofen and drank some broth, then two hours later I took 2 pain meds and drank more broth. I alternated between the pain meds and Ibuprofen every 2 hours until I went to bed that night, and ate mashed potatoes and drank broth each time. I also iced 20 minutes on, 10 minutes off from 12pm to 4pm. I had VERY minimal swelling that only my husband noticed and had no upset stomach or pain. I would send anyone to Dr. Tiernan. Side note: One of the other reviews mentioned an xray that isn't covered by insurance and the patient was saying how the office never told them about it... Well, I had that xray done and I was told from the very beginning that A) it was optional, B) that no insurance would pay for it, and C) the exact cost that I would owe if I opted to do it. Obviously this person was not paying attention when Dr. Tiernan and/or his staff explained how it worked. Yes, the extra $385 out of pocket sucked to pay but I'd rather pay it than risk my jaw going numb for the rest of my life because my nerve was wrapped around my root. I also called my dental insurance to make sure and they said it was correct, that they do not pay for this type of xray. Sorry, rant over. This dental office is superb and anyone who says anything different is a nut job. read more

My mom came there on a referral from an endontist and waited for 45 minutes to be seen and thenwas seen and thought the dr was very nice,He told her he wanted an xray that goes around her head to see more detail of the area she was referred for. At no point did anyone tell her how much that would cost and then just took that xray and when she went up to front to check out was told "your insurance wont cover that xray and its $385!!!!!!!" never offered to bill which they should have She was shocked but the girls up front were rushing her to leave because they were working late because he wanted the xray she paid it and left but was upset about it. I work in the dental field and we always have to tell the patient how much something is before we just do it!!! and when I called to ask why they hadnt billed her insurance they said "we dont bill for those because they wont pay for them. I requested they bill it and the lady was rude and said I would need to hear that from your mom so my mom called and told them to bill it and requested the CD image he took. This office is very shady and doesnt handle business very professional! DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU WANT TO BE TREATED WITH RESPECT!!! read more

I recently had a tooth extracted by Dr. Tiernan. I was very nervous about having my tooth extracted, but was put at ease immediately when I called to schedule the appointment. I was able to get an appointment in a timely manner. The front office staff was pleasant and reassuring. Dr. Tiernan's assistant was frieindly, comforting and sympathetic about my fears and concerns. Dr. Tiernan was friendly, listened to me, and explained all that he would be doing during the extraction. He said, and continued to say during the extraction, that I could take a break at any time, and to be sure that I told him if I was in any kind of pain. The cream which was used to numb up the area before I received the injections worked like a charm. His technique for administering the injections was pure perfection. His demeanor at all times was calm and caring throughout the extraction. Kudos to him for that because my tooth just did not want to cooperate about coming out. I was sent home with instructions -- both verbal and written -- about what my recovery would be like and how I was to care for all involved. Dr. Tiernan called me that night to check up on him.
