Worst haircut experience ever! I decided to try this place based on positive reviews, but the stylist that worked on my hair was simply lazy. For starters, she didn't wash my hair. Every salon I've gone to has always washed my hair so I was shocked when she didn't. She just immediately started chopping my hair off in such a sloppy manner. It felt like she just wanted to be done with my hair as fast as she can and really didn't care with how it would turn out. She just chopped my hair off and finished it off with a flat iron and didn't even use any hair product! And by the way, she didn't bother to show me how the back of my hair looks either and now that I've had a chance to take a closer look at the layers I can see why. It's a mess; my husband said the back of my hair looks like a mullet. Needless to say I will not be coming back and would not recommend this salon to anyone. read more

When I arrived, she was in the back room and I was not greeted or checked in for 10 minutes. I had called earlier that day and asked the price for a women haircut for long hair and she said $50. I went there because that's along the price of other hair salons in the area and it had good reviews. I had come after work so I assumed she would have washed my hair or at least ask but she did not. I was happy with the haircut but when I was being checked out, she charged me $65. $65 for a 20 minute haircut and 5 minutes of straightening. I had a mid back length hair and I got an inch trim with some layers. I was tired and I just wanted to go home so I just paid the bill and left a 25% tip. The more I think about it, I feel like I was almost ripped off. I am satisfied with the haircut but it was disorganized and not worth the money. I do not think I will be returning. read more

Review on hair cut only. Ok, the place looks pretty bad and it looks like only 90 year old ladies would come here. When my stylish gf recommended this place, I was actually pretty shocked. She looks like the type of person who would only cut her hair at a fancy salon. So when she recommended me to this small and dated hair salon located next to a bathhouse, I was really skeptical at first. I've always had long hair, and I've had it butchered by many hair salons in the U.S. Yes, it is really hard to find a good hair salon that handles Asian hair very well. Annie's hair design gave me the best hair cut I had in VA, so I have to give her a 5 star despite some imperfections. I went to another salon after Annie's and then my hair got butchered again (and it has over 4.5 yelp raiting!!!), so I am growing it out till I can get a decent hair cut. My hair currently looks horrible with weird edges, so this time I will return to Annie's. I read a negative review about washing and drying hair before cutting it. This is a normal procedure in Korean hair salons. In fact, I always look forward to getting my hair washed and blow dried before getting a cut. The reason is, since the stylist water sprays your hair anyway for a cut, why not wash it and give a little head massage to make both client and hair dresser feel good? I am sure no one would like to touch dirty hair either. She does seem to like using razor to cut your hair, so if you don't like the style, you might not like it. For me, she only used her scissors to cut chunks, and then used razor for a detailed cut. I personally really liked it, and it was probably one of the best hair cuts I got outside of Korea. Annie is a magician with her scissors. I have super thick, coarse, unruly Asian hair and seriously, most don't know how to cut or style it (even at other Korean salons). Annie barely needs an explanation and knows exactly what to do. She's meticulous and skilled at what she does. I recently moved to the area and wanted to find a decent hair dresser. I saw some decent reviews on yelp and figured she would be a good choice. I waited a few weeks before posting this review, I was hoping my frustration and disappointment would lessen. It hasn't. It's a nightmare haircut. It takes me forever to grow my hair out, so I explained I wanted to keep it long and kept expressing to her how much to take off (showing her with my hand how much 1-2 inches is). Annie had someone shampoo AND DRY my hair before she started cutting it. I have never had a stylist cut my hair while it was dry. "Annie" cut off SEVERAL inches from my hair when I only went in for a "trim" asking her to trim 1-2" max off the ends. I repeated this to her many times after I saw the massive amount of hair dropping. I was thinking maybe there was a language barrier. After still feeling super uncomfortable, about the 5th time of telling her that she is cutting more than I asked, she was very dismissive, calling me "picky." I only wanted a trim; I liked my last haircut and wanted to freshen up the ends. It takes me soooo long to grow out my hair and I walked out with a bob looking cut. :( After she butchered my head, she began styling it and I said "I don't style my hair that way and that I don't need you to style it." She insisted on styling it, saying "she will do it her way" and if I don't like it that I can change it after I leave. What a mess. I left with a bouncy bob with the ends curled under - nothing at all what I asked for. After washing it the next day, the ends are all different lengths, nothing matches up at all. It's embarrassing. First of all, I have to state that I've had way too many bad haircuts to ever right a review, and a good one at that, so you know she must have done an awesome job! I am new to the area and this is my second haircut I've had in 2 years (again, too many bad haircuts to trust anyone). I am also notorious for last minute haircuts. I called in the afternoon to see if there were any available appointments and as I figured, she was booked. Understanding, I told her I'd check my schedule and call back to check her schedule. However, she offered to take me in as her last appointment before closing, anyway! That's customer service! I had hair that was slightly past my shoulders that had a year old balayage ombre growing out. All I needed was to keep the length and get layers. Annie is the type of hairstylist that takes her sweet time to ensure you are getting what you want/need! My hair feels so healthy and light while closely maintaining its original length! She did such an amazing job! I wish I had a before and after but as a reference: I went from looking like Immortan Joe from Mad Max to Posh Spice in 30mins! Annie is pretty good at what she does. I have gone to her for a few years for haircuts, Japanese magic straightening, and a digital perm. When I get a digital perm, I have frizzy/unruly hair so we had to Japanese straighten the top portion and perm the bottom portion. It took a few hours but when I got home I noticed the top portion wasn't slick so I called Annie. She was very accommodating and told me to come back in the next day. I went back and she redid the top portion.. which I'm not sure was a good idea because of all the chemicals. Plus, it ended up looking about the same. I paid $45 for women's haircuts and $300+ for Japanese straightening/digital perms (pretty standard considering I have long/thick hair). I would give her 3.5 stars until this incident.. I even brought my boyfriend here for a few haircuts. There aren't that many places that cut his hair to his liking so I scheduled another haircut here for 6pm one day before we had to go to an event later that day. We were on a schedule so we were glad we could squeeze in a hair cut before the event. When we got there at 6, she was with a client and there were people waiting. I told her I made an appointment and she told me we had to wait 30 minutes meaning we would be late to the event.. She was overbooked and was taking walk-ins before us...... not thinking of the customers who made appointments, only of making more money. But on one instance, I went for a haircut and Mi&Mi was fully booked for the day (my fault for not calling ahead). Not wanting to drive back to DC, I yelped again and saw that Annie's Hair Design had good reviews and is just across the street. So I walked in and gave it a try. I suppose not many people have discovered this gem of a salon (yet) so they were able to accommodate me. But let's just say I was so happy with my hair that I have been going to Annie's ever since. I came here about a week ago & I was very pleased. I think my hair cut was great. It was thin like I wanted & both the ladies there were kind. However, the lady that did the shampooing was super cool and I really enjoyed whatever she put in my hair. My hair still feels soft from it. Anyways back to the wonderful service they have, they go a long way to make sure you feel comfortable. Another plus is that I called in the same day and was able to get a haircut the same day. Annie's Hair Design in Annandale is a hidden gem. First, your stylist is likely to be . . . Annie. For any of us who have been to a hundred places and once in a while find someone we want to return to, you will recognize the "It" factor in Annie on your first visit. I have thick, coarse, curly hair and go to Annie for chemical straightening (on her website it's called "Japanese Magic"). I have had Japanese Liscio reconditioning at other places, but she has a treatment/conditioning process that leaves my hair in better condition and smoother than I've had before. She also has an intuitive sense for how to cut hair. My thick, coarse hair is also long, and how to cut the ends can be tricky and often has ended in disappointment. Usually, any form of feathering results in even larger, more unmanageable ends, so before I've gone for straight-across cuts as the lesser evil. She's figured out how to soften the look without puffing out the ends. read more
