I was a faithful client of Paul for approximately 15 years. I was 15 minutes late one day & I had no good excuse. I somehow managed to get confused. He threw a hissy fit & I apologized twice. I even did my roots at home & texted another sincere apology. He's not my friend. He is someone I pay to do a service but we were friendly . I was never late. This day was an exception. Hooray! Salons are open for service again. I always go to Cindy M. at Paul Milina Salon. You can book directly with Cindy by calling or texting at 510-207-6687. Cindy always has the right touch with my hair. Today's visit was a colour touch up, conditioning treatment mask and style. My grey hairs are perfectly concealed once again, yay! I usually rotate my services. My next visit will be colour touch up, trim and style. Cindy is professional, kind, efficient and skilled in her profession. She handles all clients, women, children and men. The salon is following COVID safety protocols. Masks are worn by clients and staff. Hand sanitizer is provided. Everyone stays 6 feet apart (except client and stylist). There are dividers between stations. Staff sanitize areas after each client in any chair or area. I felt safe and taken care of at all times. In the reviewing of this hair salon I will say that Paul is great with color and average in style. I've been a client of his for awhile. I just want any potential new clients to know that he is very judgmental and sensitive-if you have a different outlook on things in life. He gets upset very easily if you have a different opinion than his. I've never been treated so badly and unprofessionally in my life. I think he is ready to retire and just has a depressive bad attitude about having to keep working. I'm going to suggest that you find someone else that you can converse with and have an enjoyable experience with. He's obviously an unhappy person and it makes it hard to look forward to your appointment. His rules are don't talk about anything he doesn't like. And when you don't he accuses you of doing so. Well, I got a haircut 4 weeks ago and at had time made an appointment for 4 weeks.later Well Badie never texted me when my appointment was. This salon has recently brought on a new stylist, Sadi. I highly recommend booking an appointment with her whenever you are in need of absolutely any type of hair service. Sadi specializes in every area, and she's got a gift for touching up any mistakes previous salons might have thrown your way. I was highly impressed with not only Sadis work, but also the atmosphere of this salon-affordable, professional and comfortable, rather than most hair salons you walk into which typically have an instant level of snot nosed owners and stylists who have a skill set in gossip rather than hair. I really wish my former stylist at a different salon had not left to be a stay at home mom but I get it, I was one for 10 years, but sadly for me, she did retire and I am having a terrible time finding someone talented and reliable enough to touch up roots and do tape in hot heads extensions. I began looking for a salon in Castro Valley that did both color and hot heads tape in extensions. I called this salon in late January and was told one person there did extensions. She and I made an appt. I had already purchased my hot heads extensions from my retiring former stylist and picked them up a week before this new salon/stylist appt. My first time at Paul Milina Salon I waited for 20 mins for the stylist and I left with lemon yellow roots. When I asked the stylist if she had toned me (I did caution her in the beginning that I will need toner because my hair pulls very warm tones and I even brought my own Wella toner) she told me she toned me. I asked her when that happened because I had been bleached (no foils..btw), then rinsed and extensions were put back in, there was no point in which I was toned. She claimed and charged me for it too. I was not at the sink for 10-15 mins for toning like EVERY other time I have been to a salon since I started coloring my hair 27 years ago, longer than she has been alive, so I know my hair and quality. She was oddly fixated on the fact that I brought a purse and a bag of things that I need with me. I am disabled and also have a child so naturally, I travel with a bag of my medications, snacks, books, paperwork, an ipad, and other items that will not fit into a purse, these are things I need for my disability and as a mom. She brought it up to me about 5 times and I found that bizarre and it made me feel extremely uncomfortable, enough that I took a picture of my black purse and my cute tote for other items. Nothing was hanging out, it was all neat and tidy like me, but she sure did want to latch on to something it seemed. Maybe she was having a bad day? She mentioned that she was 26 years old, we chit chatted a bit and then I left unhappy. She told me that she didn't have time to fix it and did not offer to fix it free of charge for another date?!? After a few days of bad headaches, I noticed 4 huge wefts of extensions came out with my hair and the root attached! The extensions were put in improperly and were too high on my root/hairline so they ripped my hair out. So..that 1st appt. I left with my hair bright white at the hairline and about 2 inches of yellow after that and it did not blend in at all. I could not stand the yellow roots and when I asked her to fix it please she was always busy so I went to a different salon for toning. I didn't want to do it myself so that it was a perfect match to my extensions. Despite my gut feeling, I went back. This appointment was to again to remove extensions, root touch up and toner and then add new extensions. My autoimmune disease flared up with new medication so I told her no extensions this time. I didn't want her applying them too high on my roots again and getting breakage/bald spots. When I told her that I had to remove a few of the wefts myself because she put them too high up she said she had been doing hot heads extensions for 10 years..I said "really? so you were doing this at 16 years old licensed???" I do not abide liars which is precisely why I am writing this accurate account of what happened with Sadi. So May 2018, I arrived exactly 9 mins late, I had texted her letting her know that I was stuck in morning traffic. I had to get a taxi because I am disabled and cannot drive. When I arrived and sat down in the chair the first thing she said to me was "you were 20 mins late so I don't know what I can do for you". I explained it was actually 9 mins and she was very late the last time I was there and she kept arguing with me and I finally had to stop the nonsense and say "can we just get this going instead of being rude to me and I will find another stylist". She disappeared for 15 mins and then came back, removed the extensions, applied the bleach and then left for a very long time again. I had to go and find her to get the bleach off my hair as it began to burn my skin. Again she did not tone my hair at all and I noticed quite a few dark lines and a brown hairline in patchy areas. I flat out told her I will not pay for the services until she fixed it, I am tired of leaving there with subpar hair at a premium price 300+ per visit. She ran off to talk to the owner Paul. I went up to him explained that I have had to have other stylists correct the color Sadi has done, she was rude and I wanted my hair fixed before I paid for a half-done service. He said "yeah well you can just leave". GLADLY Paul, gladly. I would not recommend this salon to anyone with standards. The whole place is always empty, not surprised. read more

I've been jumping from salon to salon trying to find a hairstylist that can color my hair without the harsh damage and will not overcharge me. I would dread getting touch ups because they would cost me a fortune, not to mention a full color if I decided to go for a new look. My co-worker referred me to her hairstylist that she's been going to for many years. Her name is Rosario and is currently working at Paul Milina Salon. I was hesitant to go because I live in San Francisco and it would take me about 45 minutes to get there. Since I've been having so much bad luck with finding a hairstylist, I gave it a shot. Thank goodness I went to Rosario. She knows exactly what she is doing. I've seen her about three times now and she hasn't disappoint. She listens to what you want and she will add some ideas as well. Her ideas just made so much sense that every time I came to see her, I just let her do anything she want with my hair. And she's been hitting the jackpot every time! She also plans out what type of hair style you want in the upcoming season so that she can prepare your hair for it to decrease any damages it may incur. That's one of the things I really liked about her and made her stand out. None of the previous hairstylist I've seen before ever told me how the chemicals would ruin my hair or would even care enough to plan out what I wanted to do later on. After meeting Rosario I feel like the hairstylist I've had in the past didn't care if my hair got damage, they just wanted my money. With that said, I will be keeping and will continue seeing Rosario even if it takes me 45 minutes to get there. I highly recommend her. My hair grew so fast that I needed another haircut. I thought my previous cut was ok but this time I was looking for a little bit more as far as style so I decided to give this place a try. I called to make a same day appointment and Kat was available so I went in with pictures in hand to show her the look I wanted. Got my first haircut in a while here last night. I've been bouncing around for a few years now never really happy with my haircuts...until now!! Liza is AMAZING and so sweet! My hair is thick and was about half way down my back with a weird shape and grown out layers. When I walked out my hair was light and bouncy with great volume! I would highly recommend Liza. She really listens and I got the sense that she really tries to do what her clients want. The salon is very clean, spacious and everyone is very helpful and personable. I've been to this salon several times when visiting family, I wish the stylists in this salon were in Sun City West, AZ! From what I see of the stylists at this salon, a person cannot go wrong with any of them. My sister-in-law has her hair done by Rosario who has graciously accommodated me every year at this time for the last 6 years or so. I've had my hair cut and highlighted by Rosario and it is the best cut and color I have ever had. She is the consummate professional who takes an interest in her clients and what gets done with their hair. She shows a high degree of skill and flair, is up-to-date with modern/trendy styles; if asked, she will suggest cuts and styles as well as color that will compliment the clients facial features, skin tone, etc. This salon is not a hack shop, be prepared to spend at least an hour getting a fabulous haircut. this review is for Diane. I went to her twice. The first time I was asking her to help me with a bad haircut, with a careful trim. She did a decent job. I went back again to get highlights. I asked if I could email her photos of what I was wanting. I told her that it had been years since I got highlights and was nervous about it. She said to send them in a text instead. I thought it might be a bit hard to see, but did what she asked. I sent her 5 or so photos. She put the highlights in and the color seemed okay in the salon but when I got into different light it seemed a bit brighter. Then I noticed within that first evening that there was a definite line where the highlights began and seemed to be about 1/4 inch from my scalp. This is not what I expected from a $130 highlight job (which included an $18 tip). So I texted her, assuming that she preferred texting since that is how she asked me to send the photos. I should note that in that first evening, two of my trusted friends both told me that the line of the highlight was very prominent. I decided to ask Diane if I could come in and have her put toner on it just to blend it a bit. I also asked her what this would cost. Diane got defensive in the text and said that she thought that she had done a beautiful job and did exactly what I requested. She said that I had been pleased with it as well. I told her that yes it was a beautiful job but the line where the highlight begins is so harsh and I would like to tone it down. The way the highlight began abruptly made it look like it was already growing out. Diane asked me to wait a week. At first I said I would, then throughout that night I would get up and look at the highlights and just cringe. It was just brassy and harsh. I texted her again that next morning and asked if I could please come in to have her put toner on it. I couldn't bare to go a week with the way it was looking. Diane snapped back at me the following: I'm sorry that I haven't been able to please you. I used the color you chose and it came out as expected. This constant communication is not included in the service. I will be sending you a refund and please find another stylist to help you. I did not expect such a response. I have never had a stylist be so unempathetic, moody and defensive with me in my whole life. Obviously she gave no regard to the fact that I told her how it had taken me years to get highlights again, and I trusted she would work with me. All I wanted was some toner. I already had 3 friends that were going to make appointments with her. I warned them that she has a nazi-like attitude when it comes to her clients and their satisfaction with her work. You either like it or you are out. I told her that I wished her well and that I was hoping she would work with me. I never asked for a refund. As far as the texting, I guess I should not have assumed that this communication would have continued to be okay with Diane, but since she is the one who invited me to text her the photos initially, I thought this was what she preferred. I personally would prefer email since the photo details would be more seen. But she is the professional, I assumed. I also would have thought being a professional that she would have told me in a cordial way to at that point use another means of communicating besides texting. I would have gladly done so. The main thing is that Diane got defensive instantly and that clouded her whole perception of my wanting to put toner. I ended up going to a stylist in Alameda. He said that the line was too harsh and agreed toner would blend it to look more natural as he said. He and his partner kindly worked to get it to look natural and for a fair price. I was very grateful. It looks natural now. Especially after paying $130, no person should have to bear an entire week of brassy unnatural looking highlights (especially when the fix is easy with toner). I have never experienced such harsh defensive customer service. She discarded me as a customer, and as well the 3 friends that I have that were going to make appointments to have her style or cut their hair. I hope Diane feels better soon. read more

Wow - sorry to spoil the party with this review but either I was assigned to the wrong hair stylist or the other reviews were faked by family and friends of the owner. Summary: This is a supposed salon that charges salon prices but is located in a dumpy strip mall next to a laundromat and lube place. The color and cut I received were on par with Super Cuts...wait...at least Super Cuts didn't charge me $150. There was never a receptionist at the counter either time I went so I sat for 10 minutes before being acknowledged. No wine, no cucumber water, no offer to take my jacket, no nothing at this "salon". I found this place via Yelp and was excited to give it a try due to its rave reviews. I had two visits with the same stylist whom I won't rat out online because she is really nice, just not a great stylist. Her color technique was basic at best. I thought the color looked "flat" without a lot of dimension - like something you would get out of a box if you did it yourself. Considering the high cost of getting color plus hi/low lights, I was expecting more. I have thick short hair that needs to be razored and texturized or else it falls flat. It looked flat while I was sitting in the chair so I asked her to please textured a bit more because I was unable to get any volume. I swear she looked at me like deer in the headlights. Her response was that I'd get more volume after it was washed. What - if hair doesn't look good when you walk out of the salon, it never will! Don't ask why I gave her a second chance. This review is for Cindy Miller. I came in on Friday 11/22/13 for a cut and color. I was very specific with what I wanted. I wanted the same color that was on the ends to match my roots. I came in with a copper/bronze color on my ends that I really liked. I also wanted to cut the length off. I wanted a lower maintenance hair cut however I still wanted face framing layers and I wanted the back to fall into a "V". Cindy said it could all be done. We agreed to cut the length off and agreed on "boob" length and the back would reach my bra strap. FYI Cindy low maintenance doesn't mean lame! My hair ended up above my shoulders!! I was livid and wanted to get extensions! My bangs look awful!The color turned out to be black! I NEVER wanted to go back to dark, I lightened my hair color for a reason! I'm stuck with the horrible hair cut, if I get it fixed it will only take more length off! The salon is clean and the décor is lovely. However, my experience with Cindy was awful! Avoid this salon unless you want to look like your head was weed-whacked. Very disappointed with the last cut I got here. So disappointed, I won't be going back. After the stylist cut my hair completely differently than what I asked for, I asked her why she didn't cut it the way I described. Worst response she could have given? "I didn't hear you say that." Then, when I asked her to correct it, she made a few minor adjustments. After telling me it was done, she said I should call her if I decided I didn't like it after I got home. Meanwhile, her next client was sitting nearby, telling me it looked fine and was making it very clear that they both wanted me to leave. In the "don't let the door hit you on the way out" sort of way. So I went home, washed it, styled it, tried out the haircut overnight to see if it would lay differently. Nope. When I called the stylist back, she told me she wouldn't be able to fit me back in for 4 more days. So instead of waiting those 4 long days and having everyone in my life thinking I looked like a Pomeranian with bedhead, I went to another salon who fixed the terrible haircut. I'm sharing this now because I'm angry that she didn't listen to what I wanted, refused to correct it while I was in her chair asking for the corrections, blowing me off when I called back to come back in... Castro Valley has more hair salons than stoplights. Every middle aged woman has hi lites and acrylic nails. Every salon has someone I went to high school with working there.. and its always awkward. THIS salon, is a breath of fresh air. I will disclose that I once worked for a hair salon as a receptionist in high school, and I first found out about Paul Milina Salon when one of our stylists- Cheryl- moved over here. I usually cut and dye my own hair, partially because I'm neurotic, and partially because I"m cheap. When a haircut or color goes wrong... my answer is Cheryl. She is not just a hair robot who follows pictures and guidelines, she is a true artist, if you let her be. My mom, grandma and aunt now go to her as well, for all sorts of things ranging from haircuts to permanent makeup. The second portion of my review is dedicated to Juta. My mom got me a gift certificate for a massage shortly after my dad passed away in hopes that I would 'loosen up'. My stubborn ass waited ONE YEAR to use it... Juta said that stubbornness doesn't expire and took my gift certificate anyway. She worked mainly on my left shoulder and upper back, took care of a few knots, stretched a few muscles, and cracked a few joints. I left feeling very refreshed. The salon as a whole is hip, bright, spacious, and always smells good for some reason. Marilyn at the front is a doll, always friendly and always confirms your appointments. I need to review this hairsylist because she was SO amazing. Kat at Paul Milina Salon took words like "make it a little shorter, but mostlly more fun." and knew exactly what to do and she did it in RECORD TIME. She really listened to what I wanted and asked questions about how I like to style it. She was great with my 10-year-old daughter as well (who started off as an impatient sourpuss, but left as an interested observer), asking her questions and including her in our conversation. The person answering the phone was very nice and was able to find me a slot of a cut and color today! I was really nervous as I had never been to this salon before, but my hair was long overdue for some care and today was the day. I was given an appointment with Rosario and she was AWESOME! She looked at my hair, asked me what I wanted to do and gave me her advice. I followed her advice and I am not disappointed! The color is fabulous and the cut is great too. Ok....so I've been putting off cutting my hair for the longest time. I'm pretty lazy when it comes to maintaining my hair....I'm content with just slopping it up into a bun or ponytail most of the time. But I'm going to a wedding tomorrow so the scraggly dried mess that was my hair was simply unacceptable. Anyhow, I really didn't feel like heading into the city to my usual spot....too far...too much $$$. Paul Milina's is down the street from me! Why not support a local business? Terrified, I walked in not really knowing what to expect. De Anna was friendly and *gasp* asked me what I wanted! I'm used to being told what will look good on me and just having my locks chopped off without a whole lot of input from me. She did a great job adding in layers to my hair, cutting off the dead stuff and even styled my hair! She showed me my new do and I probably didn't oooh and ahhh as much as I should have but I truly do love my haircut! And all this for $40.00! WHAT??? Crazy. I'm used to spending at least $130.00 on a haircut. Seriously this was a bargain. I'm sure that I'll be back the next time I need my haircut. Once again, Cat from Waxcraft gave me another amazing recommendation. When I asked her about hair color, she immediately suggested Kat at Paul Milina Salon. I wasn't sure what I wanted, I just knew I wanted to lighten my hair color, drastically. Also, I had some old black dye in there from who knows when. I wasn't sure how or what to do to achieve lighter hair. I decided to have a consult with Kat first. I explained what I wanted and she immediately whipped out her iPad, "like this?" She understood exactly what I was saying. She knows products, which if you are going to get your hair colored, you want your colorist to know about products. She also made a really good point: someone like me with naturally dark hair would be in a salon every month or so to get touch ups. Her suggestion of highlights and an ombre would allow for me to not be in the salon so much and it would grow in nicely. I appreciated that I was willing to do whatever she said and she didn't push expensive procedures with brutal upkeep. Kat is also honest. She created an action plan and we made an appointment for the next weekend. I was there for three hours, she told me to be prepared four hours. She works fast and knows her stuff. Her knowledge of products allowed for the black hair dye to be removed and I could actually see my natural hair color without my hair getting fried. I was seriously impressed. During the lightening process I was thinking, "what in the world is she doing?" but afterwards the results were perfect and exactly what I wanted. I spent three days afterwards looking in every mirror I could find. While I can't speak for everyone who works at Paul Milina Salon, everyone I spoke to was nice and complemented my hair as I walked out. Kat as a colorist and hair stylist is amazing, talented and knows products and is a cool chic to spend an afternoon with. Her prices are very reasonable for the services you get. I have long, thin hair. I went to Kat after reading her reviews ~ I am THRILLED with what she got my hair to do. She asked what I wanted and how I currently wear it. Within a few minutes she got to work and ..... perfect. I have received many compliments and really feel pretty/sexy when I look in the mirror or run my hand through it. I waited a week to right this review to make sure my initial 'love for my cut' lasted longer then a few days. Just a quick note on the first review you might read... the salon is way current in its look. It has cement floors, simple, mod light fixtures and is very spacious between stations. The colors are warm and rich. I think yelp needs to work on how long posts are up because the place does not even look like the description. I have been going here for a few years now; ever since Kat started working for Paul. Their new location is awesome! More spacious and better lighting. Paul and everyone else there is incredibly nice to everyone who comes in. Kat had been doing my hair for about 5 years now and I would never dream of going to anyone else! Cute Salon. I have lived in CV forever and have never been in this salon before. Very spacious. But truth be told this review is really to sing the praises of Tara Lynn. Tara does fantastic work. I have never been happier with a stylist. She does an awesome job. I recently was in for high lites and a style. As, I left feeling fantastic and looking good. Sweet little salon and well decorated. And surprise surprise! They do kids cuts withe shampoo for only $18. Treated my son like a little King too. I went there because my boyfriend has been going there to get his hair cut since the beginning of time... and even to when they were at a different location. My son was thrilled with his cut, I enjoyed the atmosphere and cushy couches to sit on while waiting. The women at the front desk were super friendly and I felt very at home. Great place. I decided to try the place because its so close to my house and it had great reviews. I was going to another place in San Leandro for years and I wanted to try something different. Well I've been very happy! The place is clean and spacious. The employees are pleasant too! But the real "gem" is a lady named "Kat" who is such a delight to be around and gives a great hair cut. My hair is simple without color or highlights but I still want a good haircut. I've been so happy I brought my two teen girls there also. It's about $100 dollars for the two including tip but you get what you pay for. I'm very pleased! Also, she's always on time...I've never waited! read more

I have very natural curly hair and have found it hard to have a hair dresser understand that and know how to cut my hair accordenly. I got referred to Donna and for the past 6-7 years I have been in hair bliss... DONNA is the best, she is a little hard to make an appointment with so i book her through out the year so I never have to worry about it. She is always down to screw around with my hair and never gets huffy (which some stylist have done) when I change my mind on the color I want to do my hair, she cuts hair amazing too, I hardly let her touch my length but the time I did was drastic and she did an amazing job, but she cuts my mom's hair and it turns out perfect. I just wish I liked short hair more, I always cut it then grow it our for 3 years before chopping it again. But I just recently moved to Brentwood and still make the drive to Donna!!! read more

This review is for Kat! I want to start this off by saying that I have very thick, very wavy, very long hair. Most of the time when someone goes to work with my hair, their eyes bug out of their head and I can almost see them crossing themselves. (Yes, it's THAT nuts.) Having said that, you can imagine that it's difficult for me to find someone with the skill and patience to work with it. Most people can't. Except Kat. She is the ONLY person I will trust to go near my hair! She's extremely skilled, and has never made me feel like I was a chore to her. I go to her because she's always done right by me--she works with my ideas and makes them even better, and I always leave happy. And she's good with all different types of hair, as well, not just mine--I've seen her do long hair, short hair, thick hair, thin hair, funky cuts, outrageous colors--and every time I'm blown away at how good the results are. As far as pricing goes, she's extremely fair. Other salons I have been to charge outrageously for their services and don't deliver near the amount of results she can, and whereas Kat is not Supercuts and Paul Milina Salon is still just that--a salon-- she doesn't break my bank account either. Hooray! Also, she's a great conversationalist. Too many times I've sat in a chair and have either waited in silence or struggled through uncomfortable, forced dialogue with the girls who have done my hair in the past. Either they've carried a "holier than thou" attitude or they have acted like they couldn't wait to get me out of the chair. Kat carries on conversations like she's known you forever, and I always leave feeling like I've had a visit with a good friend. So I have to start by saying that I LOVE LOVE LOVE the chemical queen TARA...she is absolutely the best!! I have been going to Tara for about 3 years now and I followed her over to Paul Milina from nothing, not so welcoming, salon! She is amazing...I have curly, extremely thick hair and was skeptical about letting someone touch my hair but she knew just what to do. She calmed my nerves the first time I was with her and she has been my stylist ever since.
