They have wonderful pastries and breads... but the sandwiches have gone so downhill. A month ago I ordered a French dip ( which I used to get all the time) and last time they really cut down on the meat. It looked like bread only. I asked and they said it was the right amount but it was two very thin slices. Today I ordered the turkey sandwich and knowing they now skimp so much on the meat.. I ordered it with EXTRA turkey meat and paid 4.25 extra on top of the 12.94 price of the sandwich. I was SO disappointed. I got two pieces of turkey and then scraps on my half. Again I really couldn't see the meat. I paid 4.25 more and they couldn't even add more meat. The staff said they did, but if that's true ouch..... This place for lunch was great but portions of what you order are tiny ( even if you pay for more. ) so sad. read more

Nearing the end of an enjoyable visit to Carson City, we had one final stop: Paul Schat's Bakery, which my son had noticed was highly recommended on Trip Advisor. Located at the back of a mall, we never would've found it if we had just been driving around. But we rolled in with only a half hour left before closing, but were pleased to find many sumptuous items still available. Both of my sons had a tasty latte; meanwhile, the friendly manager offered us an offer we couldn't refuse: 12 items for $12.95. Everything we had from that deal was delicious! We also purchased an Apricot Coffeecake which made for a wonderful breakfast the next day. I only wished we lived closer to take advantage more often of this wonderful bakery! Coming home from South Lake I was craving a sandwich. I thought about a few places and then Yelp guided me towards Paul Schat's. I've purchased their pastries and loaves of bread from their farmer's market appearances but I have never been to the Carson location. I found ample parking in the lot and walked right in. There was no line at the sandwich counter, but I wasn't too sure - based on layout - how to properly get into a line had there been one. The woman at the counter was quite patient as I looked through the menu and toyed between a few options. I made a choice on a sandwich for myself and one for the wifey. I asked for them both to go and right before paying I added on an order of fries. The woman was super polite when I snuck in the last minute fry order. She was quick to accommodate the addition and had the new charge ready to go before I could get my credit card out of my wallet. While waiting for my order to be finished and packed up, I went over to the pastry area. Despite being later in the day, the selection was still good. I grabbed a few pastries and a few sweet treats. While I waited for my to go order, I wasn't sure where to sit / stand. I was trying to be out of the way but felt like I was in everyones way no matter where I stood. This was the only downfall. The confusion while in the store was quickly forgotten when I arrived home and bit into the sandwich of my choice. The sandwich was perfect and the pastries were scrumptious! read more

On line menu says they have turkey salad. Yet they wouldn't make a Turkey salad wrap. If they don't have Turkey salad, they should update their website to be accurate. The Turkey wrap I got was terrible. I do NOT recommend this place. read more

Ordered a puff pastry with purple sprinkles, a slice of tiramisu cake, two Swiss chocolate chip cookies, one fudge chocolate chip cookie and a veggie sandwich. Also bought a loaf of their bread... it's so fresh! Oh, and I got a white chocolate mocha with soy milk which was really tasty! The food is not what it used to be, now it's like a ugly fast food dish. I ordered the salad with apples and pecans. They literally just chopped the apple in big chunks with core and seeds in them, and only 3 or 4 pecans, and hardly any blue cheese, it was a very small salad compared to what it used to be, and the price went up. The baked goods are ok... not as good as Schats in Bishop, although they have many of their other goods. I stopped in on Christmas morning because the Google hours said they were open. I was hesitant, but desperate, as I was making my way up to Renown to visit a friend who had been hospitalized for a while. I pulled into the parking lot and realized the hours on Google were incorrect, they were definitely not open for business. God must've been looking out for me, because the owner happened to be there setting out proofers racks of pies out for the community to take for free. They explained that they would be closed until after the new year and they didn't want the pies going to waste! I chuckled and declined at first, saying that all I really needed was some coffee. The owner said, "how does a latte sound?" I told him no way, I'll just swing by Starbucks. He insisted he would make me a latte. Y'all I cried. How generous to fire up his espresso machine for me! As he whipped up the latte I grabbed a few pies to take to the wonderful staff in the Renown cancer center. The good; Carrot cake is AMAZING!! Customer service is always 5-stars! The bad; Reuben was blah, very little sauerkraut and sauce. The onion rings were disgusting! So greasy I sent them back for a fresh order, but they came out just as greasy. All their loaves come pre-sliced thin. They also have sweet treats (assorted cookies and cakes), jams, oils, and teas; and there's a full cafe that serves sandwiches and coffee beverages. read more

Short and sweet. Their "ciabatta" loafs for the sandwiches they make them on are world class. We bought a bag to bring home and I'd honestly drive from Reno to Carson to get more. They are deadly good. We had the French dip and cheeseburger. French dip was a total slam dunk, but also on their amazing "ciabatta". Burger was just okay and overcooked, hence the star loss. I'm not sure they're making their own patties among other things. If they are, they are over-pressing and over-cooking them. Quick side note, I am saying "ciabatta" because their bread doesn't remind me of any ciabatta I have had before. It's much less dense and more airy, but I'm clearly saying this in a good way as it was amazing! We would come back just to buy more of it. read more

If you ever wanted to see what would happen if you left a few kids unsupervised running your store drop by Schatts around closing time. There were two young girls working the display / pastry section at 5:30pm. Neither knew how to act with paying customers. One girl appeared to be training the other in how to be incompetent. Simultaneously, there was an adult male from the kitchen area playing 'grab-ass' games with lots of laughing and hollering. As we wanted to purchase about 6 selections we were surprised to see the one 'supervising' girl telling the other one how to put the items in a bag. The girl would put the items in a bag and walk over to the register expecting us to follow her. This happened 4 times. We had to tell both of them that we were still selecting more items. About this time the 'supervising' one tells us "we are closing in ten minutes" while they incompetently shuffled around taking waaay too long to 'weigh' the pastries. The one girl had to weigh one bag 4 times to get it right. After this ridiculous half-assed amateur experience we will not be back. read more

I've know this to be a German Bakery but it's so much more. On a recent trip from South Lake to Reno, I stopped in for Breakfast and shopping. Black Cherry Jelly - about $6 a jar. Spendy perhaps but it goes great with the bread! Dark Rye - it is the closest thing I can find to Pumpernickel here in NV. The gal behind the counter might try to talk you into the Swirl being the closest thing they have to Pumpernickel. Not true, in my world, the dark rye is dense, earth as Pumpernickel should be. Lemon Poppyseed Loaf - good. Too sweet and not enough poppyseeds for my taste. Breakfast Green Chili Burrito - eggs and chorizo burrito with a side of green chili. Next time I might as them to cook the green chilies into the burrito. Tasty! Portion so big I skipped lunch. The service is nice. There will be a line when you get there. Yes. Come here! Coffee is exceptional...just a straight up cup...French toast and omelettes were amazing. And the breakfast burrito with chorizo made in house is spot on. The homemade tomatillo salsa is perfection...order extra. When you leave...make sure to bring some baked goods with you...elephant ear, cookies, loaves of bread. You order at the counter and then seat yourself...so don't expect to be served...but the service is friendly. Also...clean bathrooms with hooks for purses.
