Over 10 years ago Dr. Walton was able to save my left shoulder, where I had sustained various injuries - he was the only one who could help me and the shoulder has been fine since. I started seeing Dr. Walton in 2009. Even though I had been seeing a chiropractor right up until this time I agreed to be seen three times in the first week. In the first adjustment one of the things Dr. Walton did was make sure any of my ribs that were out were put back in place. This alone will allow an adjustment to last where it otherwise wouldn't. I had been in a vicious cycle for years with my previous chiropractor where I needed to be adjusted continually as the pain would always return. Dr. Walton also has many tricks in his bag to make sure that you leave adjusted properly and doesn't just give up when the adjustment is not an easy one. By the end of that first week I was flying and the pain that had always come back within a few weeks has pretty much subsided. While I have always been impressed with Dr. Walton, and continued to see him when I could after moving to Santa Barbara, It's only in the last year that I realized what a god send he really is. I had broken my wrist a year before and when I mentioned it during our visit he immediately took my hand and adjusted the bones in my hand and then adjusted my elbow. The results were amazing! After hours of expensive hand therapy, that still left me without full function of my wrist, Dr. Walton brought me back to the upper 90 percentile in literally less than one minute. While it had never occurred to me to see him for this I later realized that I should see him for a knee injury that was still causing me pain over a year later. I drove back up and he found that my knee cap was twisted (it was a worker's comp injury but their doctor never found anything wrong and eventually blew me off). Dr. Walton is worth his weight in gold and I can't recommend him highly enough. Sadly I have been unable to find anyone in Santa Barbara who comes close so I hope Dr. Walton never retires. I read some of the previous reviews and he does say goofy things but that is only to distract your mind so he can actually do his job. Adjust your spine. He is highly educated, a professor of chiropractic, trusted with UC Berkeley's athletes and a fine human being. I have totaled four cars and a motorcycle. I am a professional horse trainer and in my younger years I started horses. I have been kicked, crushed, stepped on, bucked off and face planted into the ground. I've been a patient since 2003, and over time, my whole family and several friends have become patients as well. When choosing a chiropractor for your family, consider their experience. Dr. Walton is one of the best trained chiropractors in the state. He teaches at Life West, and for 20 years lent his sports medicine skills to Berkeley Cal athletes with weekly visits. My son, who played varsity basketball, was seen for several injuries, and was given great advice on rehab, and how to avoid future injuries. It's always a bummer when I injure myself working out, but Dr. Walton showed me proper form for yoga, Pilates, and weightlifting so I don't repeat my mistakes! Chiropractors that insist on seeing you three times a week and always perform the same 5 moves never helped me get better. Individualized care and self care advice so he can see you less often is Dr. Walton's approach, and that earned my trust. I first came to Dr. Walton with an injured tailbone. He was very sensitive to my pain, and rather than just focus on the tailbone itself, he also discovered and treated my uneven pelvis, which after a conversation, was found to be a result from a broken leg in childhood. (I landed on my back with my leg bent behind me). After a handful of visits, my tailbone pain went away, and my pelvis straightened out, and for the first time in years, I was able to take the lift out of my left shoe. No other chiropractor caught that connection in 25 years. In the many years since, I've been seen for various injuries, and no matter how obscure, bashing my head on the side of a rock cliff while attempting to escape a wave comes to mind, Dr. Walton knew how to treat me. Then, there are the everyday aches and pains that tend to plague me as I get older. I get treated, but then Dr. Walton teaches me how to do things better to avoid neck and back pain, like how to properly hold my cell phone, sit at my desk chair, even walk! Now that I can work remotely, from anywhere, I still wouldn't want to be too far from Dr. Walton's office. Dr. Walton is good at giving very strong adjustments (perhaps the reason I kept going back untill now). Unfortunately, he is also full of unsolicited crazy talk, strange advice, and possibly accidental sexism. He spends all the appointment time talking about completely unrelated BS, and does not listen or hold onto memories of past adjustments or conversations. The following are just a few examples of things he has said to me: "Women have bad posture because they have been taught to be creatures of prey..." "You should buy expensive bras from Nordstrom because you probably have cheap ones and that is making your posture this way..." "You should let go of the shame, let go of whoever thought you to be ashamed of slouching..." "People are so sensitive. I thought my joke about the office having menopause was funny..." "Let's try something new..." (About an adjustment he gave me regularly) "Well not that you remember..." (When I say that whatever he is talking about does not fit my experience) "Lay down on the table with your breasts over that part of the table..." ( Does he tell men to line up their bodies with their balls over specific areas of the table!?) And on and on and on He is strange and condescending to the female family members of his that have worked the front desk too. He's so knowledgable, and a total delight to talk with about pretty much any subject. But what puts him into the highest category is his genuine desire to help each patient, regardless of their special needs. For example, during the shelter-in-place when I had a painful issue with my feet, Dr. Walton told me that if I could get there he would set up a table in the driveway so we would both be safe. I am now more than 2 year removed from my treatments with Dr. Walton. I am still dealing with the same pain that occurred during the very first adjustment he performed on me. I have been in chronic pain ever since and have had to undergo extensive treatments with upper cervical specialists trying to correct the injury that occurred during my treatment. Dr. Paul Walton healed me. Over the past 25 years I've been under the care of some excellent, compassionate, care giving chiropractors, acupuncturists, masseuses, and MD's who helped me along my road to recovery following a sacroiliac sprain suffered in my twenties. Ten years ago, my condition was so severe, I'd developed neuropathy in my big toe and a neurologist referred me to an orthopedist with a recommendation that I have spinal fusion surgery to prevent further nerve damage - I didn't. I spent tens of thousands of dollars during this time on treatments that helped, but never healed me. I was referred to Dr. Walton by a lovely masseuse and healer at Bernardus Lodge in Carmel Valley who had heard about him from other clients. During my initial exam, he listened patiently as I recounted the origins of my injury and history of treatments. I learned that he instructed one of my former Chiropractors at Life Chiropractic College West where he's still teaches. He mentioned that sometimes while doing initial examinations, he finds problems others have missed. Sure enough, he discovered that my symphysis pubis - pubic bone joint was misaligned and adjusted it. I continued to see Dr. Walton for several months (3 times a week initially / tapering to monthly) during which time he helped my spine settle in and return to its natural alignment. I see him only occasionally these days for a "tune up". I wrote this review to help both Dr. Walton and you. I am a very big guy, 270 lb. 5 years ago I suffered a sport injury and my disk is bulging since then which at times the pain is unbearable and I can barely stand, sit or walk. I have seen many different chiropractors in my life but never felt that any of them took the time to really investigate and really discover what is going on with my back and on top of it explain it to me in very plain language so I can understand what is going on with my body. I always felt that they wanted me to continue seeing them rather than them trying to fix the problem. About couple of months ago I was reffed to Dr. Walton through a good friend. I walked into his office in so much pain looking like The Hunchback of Notre Dame. When the treatment was done I was in tears because finally I was able to stand straight and I was able to walk with barely any pain. Dr. Walton has been so helpful over the years helping me recover from various injuries, and even more important, he teaches me how to change my training and lifestyle to prevent injuries and more quickly heal. Not only is he an outstanding generalist in the chiropractic field, but he is the most knowledgeable and skilled person I have seen in sports injuries and training. He has helped educate me on my training regime so I was able to recover and not end up under the knife. For example, I was having a problem with my achilles tendon and he helped me figure what I was doing in my training that was irritating it, and I was able to change my routine and had a complete recovery. I have been treated by Dr. Walton for over ten years. He's a somewhat miracle worker and quirky in a benign, interesting way. Having seen numerous chiropractors over the last thirty years, all which either hurt me such I never went back; barely relieved my symptoms and wanted me back 2-3xs a week in perpetuity; or whom made me feel better for a week but required bi-weekly visits to ensure I didn't revert to original pain and discomfort. I've sent two people with severe, extended back pain to Walton. They were under a several year treatment by other chiropractors and resisted change until neither could hardly get out of bed. Each said they were better than in a year after one visit. Both said their lives dramatically changed after a few months of treatment. To say that this guy is amazing is the biggest, hugest understatement of the year. Any year. Pick a year. I dare you. Long story short: In May 2005, I dislocated a bone in my foot while running. I went to a guy in Piedmont who works with all of these celebrities and sports teams, who is supposed to be really good. The treatment there was informal and quick, and he couldn't diagnose what was wrong. He never fixed the problem. Then I went to a physical therapist through Kaiser. She was terse and rude and told me that I was "just too sensitive to pain." Then I saw a very nice orthopedist at Kaiser, who, nice as he was, told me that I'd just have to wear an orthotic for the rest of my life. I saw two other chiropractors, neither of whom could fix my foot issue. Fast forward to June 2007, when someone tells me about Dr. Walton. I go in, and he's not only familiar with my incredibly rare brand of dislocation, but he freaking fixes it within 5 visits. TWO YEARS of hobbling around and seeing at least 4 different doctors--and this guy fixes the issue in 5 visits. Now I just see him for maintenance on other various body parts. Today, I am running again (!!!!!!) after thinking that I would not be able to do so for the rest of my life (after all of those negative doctors). Dr. Walton combines chiropractic maneuvers with some light fascial/muscle massage. He's positive and upbeat, while realistic. He teaches at Life Chiropractic College in Hayward, and his office is decorated with multiple teaching awards. He understands Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and while he's not an acupuncturist he'll talk about that perspective (if you want him to). Finally, a huge testament to him is that whenever I talk to other chiropractors about him, they squeal as if he's a celebrity, saying things like, "Ohmigod! He's so amazing! You see him?" His offices are just off of the Orinda BART. Totally do-able if you don't want to drive up to Orinda. And if you do drive, there's plenty of free parking. Last and not least, the office visits are $50 out of pocket. The man is a genius and yet he keeps things affordable so that people can see him. I can't say enough good things about him. Until you've had an injury that won't resolve itself and know what it's like to have your life limited in that way, it will sound overdramatic to say this, but--this guy gave me my life back. read more

MRI revealed my ailment as spinal stenosis, a constriction on nerves in the lumbar section (lower back). Dr. Walton was my sixth medical practitioner interview. He reviewed my xrays, MRI and history in order to discuss conservative options. I better understand what stretches / exercises can be considered and which should be avoided- No one ever discussed avoiding stretches with me! Dr. Walton explained that IF surgery was the final corrective action, I needed to understand the difference in how Orthopedic surgeons and Neurosurgeons go about their work. His explanation was critical and pivotal in my learning curve. He selflessly explained with mock ups and pictures the details of how and why each profession does what it does. I continue the path of conservative treatment for now and thanks to Dr. Walton have raised my level of understanding and decision making to a higher level. It is still early on my path to healing, it has only been one year. I find it incredibly difficult to make such an irreversible decision (fusion surgery) when one is not a subject matter expert. Dr. Walton coached me in questions to ask of future doctor visits to better comprehend the risks and rewards. Even if you are under the care of another DC and especially if the corrective action you are facing is an invasive surgery (6 month recovery), make the time to visit with Dr. Walton. I saw Dr. Walton about two years ago because I had two problems: neck pain from a car accident, and a three year old upper back injury. He is certainly an interesting guy but he couldn't figure out what was wrong with my back, and he did not make it better. I remember one session in which he had me breathe in, and then out before he pushed down on my spine. The pain was immense, but fortunately it went away after a few minutes. I told him that it hurt really bad and he replied, "Did you expect this to be painless?"...Now, if you think that is a professional way of adjusting someone's spine then by all means give Dr. Walton a try. But somehow I think that it is more appropriate to tell the patient before one administers a distressing amount of pain. At another session I was waiting by his reception desk and from behind the door of his operating room I could hear him treating a female patient. She said "Ow! That is really painful." And a few seconds later she raised her voice and said, "No, stop! That really hurts!" And I heard him laugh. A minute or so later they both emerged and she seemed apologetic about refusing further adjustments. She shouldn't have been. It seems like Dr. Walton has patients who don't speak up and routinely return to his practice hoping that he will eventually get something right despite painful and ineffective procedures. I would encourage anyone who is planning to visit this practice to question every adjustment before he does it--especially anyone with back pain. Ask what he is doing and why, because he WILL perform adjustments without telling you what he is doing or why he is doing it. He only explained to me what he was doing to my back after he did it, and he was very vague. Make him give you specifics, make him explain the medical terminology involved before he does anything--and if it sounds like it will be needlessly painful, don't let him do it without first consulting another doctor or outside professional opinion. Doc Walton in person is the dead opposite of what you might expect from a chiro who gets such high reviews. His office is no frills, he's very direct & no nonsense, yet a child of the 70's who often describes the therapy in understandable metaphor. But I've come to him twice after trying other chiros who were closer and more convenient, and I won't waste my time any more, as twice he's performed his everyday miracles, with an arsenal of adjustment tools that go way beyond virtually any other chiro I know. ONce for my wrecked knee and now the latest for the pinched nerve in my neck - the worst malady I've ever had. 2.5 weeks after therapy started with Doc W, the nasty neuro-pain is gone, and the muscle spasms and aches are subsiding. PLus you never leave his office AFTER treatement with nothing, he equips you with great advice for lifestyle changes (e.g. posture) that you can use for correcting stuff on your own. The highest possible recommendation I can give. I first saw Dr Walton on recommendation from a friend in 1999. He corrected my issue almost immediately. He did not recommend 6 months of treatment, or try to convince me to schedule visits I did not need. I have had other neck and back issues during the following years. Since moving into San Francisco from the east bay, I have tried 3 other doctors because of convenience and scheduling, and each of the three recommended repeated treatments over longer periods of time for issues that Dr Walton routinely corrects in only 1 or 2 visits. I first saw Dr. Walton after open heart surgery. I was having neck, back, you name it radiating pain & discomfort. Someone who had worked with him for sports injury suggested he could help. He was so good as a healer during that time. And quickly and within a few visits my pains were greatly diminished and I was getting good mobility back in my torso and other areas. I really wanted to have a good experience here. I came to Dr. Walton in hopes of recovering from an injury which has affected the quality of my life. Dr. Walton seemed gifted at doing adjustments but he was very impatient and rude to me and huffed and rolled eyes when I tried to tell him that I wasn't comfortable with certain adjustments. I always left his office with my self esteem taken down a notch but I returned because his credentials seemed so good. I should have trusted my intuition that his personality was really going to get in the way of any healing. I could never fully communicate with him because he was always angrily speaking over me and interrupting and ignoring me when trying to communicate my own bodies wisdom. Every visit I found myself focusing and praying that I would be able to blurt out at least one sentence of communication without angering him before being interrupted or dismissed. The one time he did actually kind of listen to me I experienced some healing which made me very hopeful, yet on subsequent visits I was disappointed to find that his poor attitude and dismissive behavior returned making the healing process impossible. I always felt scared to say the wrong thing, being able to communicate openly with a practitioner is so important. He refused to perform the treatments which I found effective and did a lot of adjustments to my spine and other areas even though I told him that they were painful and I didn't have issues with my spine, I really felt he had a major power trip going on. It seemed to severely irritate him when I had an opinion about what was going on with my own body. Now I am creaking and popping from my neck all the way down to my lower back which I have never experienced before, I feel terrible and I have no idea what to do about it. I've had to go to another Chiropractor and look into massage therapy to try to fix this. I thought he had the training and skill but if he cannot listen to his patients and provides such a poor environment then it's useless. read more
