My mother has moved all across the country 5-6x in the last 10 years. I've dealt with some pretty great and some pretty terrible movers in that time. When it came time for my wife and me to move cross country, we did diligent research, read reviews, looked on the better business bureau and concluded that Paula's Movers were the right choice. We had extensive conversations with a service rep who seemingly disappeared for days at a time (red flag one), who ensured us our move would be smooth and easy, would be delivered on the day I needed it, and that they didn't use third party movers - they themselves moved all the items cross country. I was quoted a price for 40 boxes, 4 TVs, bed, and desk... We ended up with 21 boxes, 2 TVs bed and desk - nearly half the items we thought we'd be bringing. This somehow resulted in the final price being 700 dollars greater than the original price, with a forceful 300 tip. When asked how this was possible, I was told my mattress (a normal king sized mattress) was larger than expected. But I was assured everything would arrive on time and I didn't need to purchase 3rd party insurance. I kept in continuous contact with the lead on the move (whom I've found out from online reviews and NYS tax forms is a coowner of the business), via phone and text. We have text messages where I communicated (again) the day needed and he ensured that it would arrive that day. When it DIDN'T arrive, he yelled at ME about it, sharing that he assumed I meant that was the first day he could deliver and not the final and that he legally had up to 4 weeks to deliver it. (red flag 2) Upon delivery, I realized this was a different delivery company - US Movers, not Paula's Movers - a third party. These guys were nice. Except all my boxes label FRAGILE - bright and red were smashed and smushed. Also, my mattress - the same one that was apparently oversized - had been forgotten somewhere. Amazing that something so "large" could be misplaced. (red flag 3). Walls scratched, items just left. Upon unpacking, here's where all hell broke loose. Nearly every item my wife and I packed labelled Fragile survived the smashes and smushing. Nearly every item Paula's Mover's packed that was "professionally" packed, didn't fair so well. Smashed in TV, my wife's 1-of-1 custom painting:destroyed, scrapes and bruises on various items. And when I called the owner, his response was "well, we only insure .60 per pound, so it doesn't make sense to claim for these items." (Final red flag) Luckily I bought the insurance. That was the only saving grace. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY IF YOU WANT YOUR ITEMS THE WAY THEY WERE ORIGINALLY PACKED. AGAIN, if you'd like broken items, unique pieces destroyed, and lack of piece of mind and continuous heartache - use Paula's Movers... otherwise, go somewhere else. read more

I hired Paula's Movers to move between apartments in Brooklyn. I was able to get a quote the same day which was substantially lower than others. After providing David, the owner, with contact info he made all the arrangements with my new building. David and his crew showed up early on the day of my move and got right to work. They were friendly but also quite efficient. All of my belongings arrived safely to my new place. The moving crew was even nice enough to help me put together some items I had shipped to my new apt like a cat tree which made my two cats very happy :) I would recommend Paula's Movers for their value and for the care and attention they took with my belongings. read more

Recently I hired Paula's Movers for an 1,132-mile major move. The owner, David (his Israeli name is Ronen), began conversations with me in a friendly, almost begging manner, since he needed the business. His company's estimated cost to me seemed reasonable and I had added a 20% cushion to my inventory list in order to assure the cost quoted would remain as quoted. I hired them because David convinced (conned?) me into believing he'd be perfect for the job. On moving day, David arrived with a crew of three other men and almost immediately began yelling at me for the cubic feet my possessions would occupy in their 26-foot van. I was dumbstruck by David's rudeness and insolence--that he would dare speak to (yell at) a paying customer as he did. He was crude, vulgar, and insulting--and his crew was embarrassed by him. They told me so. By day's end, they had packed his van with all my earthly belongings, and on the street, at the back of his van, David screamed at me that he refused to make my move for me at the price they quoted. He wanted to double the price, which would have added thousands more to my bill. (p.s. Everything must be paid in cash or by Zelle. They do not accept credit cards.). He informed me--with great hostility--that if I didn't pay his new price, he would offload my possessions and I could make other arrangements with a different mover. What choice did I have? I paid the new price. I later learned that after leaving my apartment that day, David & his crew returned to his warehouse, offloaded all my possessions, then contacted a third-party mover from Chicago who happened to be near David's warehouse and with whom he contracted to have the delivery made across the 1,132 miles. When these new movers arrived in my new city, I was surprised to learn they were a different company from Paula's Movers and therefore knew nothing about the fragile glass, porcelain vases, priceless artwork, and other extremely FRAGILE items--which I had gone over in great detail with David. Several of these valuable items were smashed or seriously damaged somewhere along the line, but the second group of movers had left my new home before I could wrap up final details with them. One of their crew stole a crucial bottle of prescription medication I had left on my kitchen counter, in the morass of boxes everywhere, and this risked causing me a serious health crisis. What's more, they did not assemble my bed or my office desk or many other items that I'd contracted with David to assemble. (He referred to his "exquisite" moving services as truly "a boutique product" (read: very few employees) for V.I.P.'s (I am not a V.I.P., just an ordinary person who values trust, honor, and extreme carefulness with other people's property). This second company of movers, while lacking in excellence, were infinitely friendlier and more eager to do a good job than Paula's Movers. For this reason I won't name them, but they had picked up two of their crew in the parking lot of Kmart from a group of illegal immigrants who knew nothing about how to move furniture..... or how to speak English, as in: "Please move the table about one foot to the left," a request greeted with a blank stare by the non-English speaker. It has taken me weeks to get PAULA'S MOVERS out of my system and I urge potential customers NOT to hire them for your move, since they will let you down in almost every way. I have text messages, emails, and taped conversations to verify all I've written in this sad review. I cannot imagine who the people are who have given PAULA'S MOVERS 5-star reviews, but I'm suspicious about their connection to this nightmarish "company." read more

I heard and read all the horror stories about moving companies that take advantage of customers so I was super wary about hiring professional movers for my recent long-distance move.
