We had our church Christmas dinner last night.(12/13) For the SD Full Gospel Church. We had 20 pounds of brisket and we did not have a lot left over that's for sure!! Meh. We were lured in because we were in the area and had a BOGO coupon. It's quaint enough with the standard look of a BBQ counter and seating. Pix of the poor animals who would be killed for our meal hang around the dining area. The folks behind the counter were friendly and engaging and took our order quickly and explained how the BBQ sauce bar worked. The food however was average at best. The pulled pork didn't have a lot of flavor and needed the sauces to punch it up. It was not full of fat which was nice. The brisket, however was fatty and also didn't have a lot of flavor. The sides were disappointing too. My green beans tasted like the tin can they came in. No seasoning was apparent and I added quite a bit of pepper. Same for the baked beans. It didn't seem like they added anything except a bit of liquid smoke to give it something. The Cole slaw we were split on. I liked it, my husband did not and thought it needed more flavor. Maybe it was an off day. We noticed there was a flyer on the door for a special dinner this night with some very swanky sounding stuff, so maybe they were distracted by that. But, seeing as the average review here is I'm guessing this was a pretty typical experience. read more

Would leave 0 stars if I could. My husband and I were visiting the area,and I tried to enter with my service dog. The girl running the register shook her head at me and told me no. I then explained he was a service dog and she questioned me again, shaking her head and making a disapproving face and said " is it?". Once I argued and offered to get his paperwork she reluctantly stopped. My husband and I were made to feel extremely unwelcome and just left. Customer service is obviously NOT a priority of this restaurant. Oh and we drove 20 minutes out of our way to try and go to this establishment. I Do not recommend this place. As you can see from my profile l don't write reviews, but I didn't feel this should be ignored. My husband and I have worked in restaurants for years and would never treat a customer like this. What a bargain! The BBQ was excellent and the service was excellent to boot. I had the Hot Dogs stuffed with BBQ and coleslaw with fries and a large Iced Tea for 8.00 and some change. My buddy had BBQ sandwich for around $5 and we were both full. Who knew?! read more

Sooner BBQ, if then pace to go if you want a good Homecooked style dinner, lunch, and/or dessert. These ladies are super friendly, helpful? And hard works. We 3 got the pulled pork dinner with Mac and cheese, and green beans. I rate it at 15, on a scale 1-10 it was so yummy. I highly recommend to get the North Carolina sauce on the side, it has a vinegar base and is super yummy. The restaurant is country chic, which I really enjoy seeing!! Stopped in for lunch, excellent food and service. My wife and I both had the pulled pork sandwich with fries. The pork was fresh and piled high. My wife had the mild sauce, I tried both spicy and the golden sauce, all were good. REALLY enjoyed the fries - appeared to be hand cut, thin, almost a cross between fries and chips. Nice sized portions and prices. I've tried about half of what's on the menu and have no complaints about anything. Potato salad is a crazy potato/dill/egg/veggie combo that is both unique and delicious. Miller's locally made bakery rolls are more than up to the task of holding a sandwich together under the rigors of slaw, sauce and slow cooking. Staff is very friendly and the service is fast and accommodating and every table has a bottle of hot, mild, and Carolina style. Plus, there is always some Texas Pete if you want to heat it up even more. Great VA barbecue. read more

Both the beef and pork barbecue here are excellent. They are not pre-sauced so you don't get sloppy joe style. They cook on real wood in a smoker right in front of the store. First, they have a dedicated gluten-free fryer! Yeah! They do try to carry gf buns, but were out. Our favorite gf place in the area closed, so we were glad to find this place. Sooner is a small, clean place, located in a strip mall. The smoker is in the parking lot. The staff were helpful and friendly. The food was prepared quickly. The bathrooms were clean. My husband had pork bbq with fries and beans. I had the chicken. There were two sauces on the table. One was labeled mild, but neither was spicy. We really like spicy. The food is mediocre at best and the customer service is terrible, most of the employees are nice it's the owners that are rude!

This is my first review and ill be frank. The food was dry and flavorless. I bought brisket and chicken and nether had any flavor or moisture. I have never felt that i have wasted my money on food like i did today. And worst of all was the poor customer service, i requested green beans and when i looked at my food i had a whole 6 green beans. I would advise that sooner bbq employees and owner work on improving this absolutely poor excuse for food and customer service. read more

We were very happy to find Sooner BBQ and that they have plenty of Gluten Free options -- including dessert! Happened to be there on "Fish-fry Friday" and because they have a separate GF fryer, my celiac daughter was able to enjoy her fried fish as well as I could. Delish! read more

Dry tasteless bbq, sauce is a must have. Fried Oreos we so greasy soaked thru 2 paper towels. The fried pickles were pretty good.

The pulled pork looked and tasted like leather shoelaces, the cold slaw was bland, and the "rolls" were hamburger buns. Perhaps the new employee scraped up hard edges of the pork, but the woman supervising her didn't pay attention to what she was giving me for my $20. Had lunch there today. Very satisfied with the cooking of the ribs and pulled pork. They have added Carolina sauce. Sides menu has expanded. They have added collard greens since my last visit. The owner is rude. Over heard him tell employees he was tired of all the fat people in Virginia whining and complaining. Well maybe if it didn't take 20 mins to get a pound of pulled pork when I was the only one in the store people wouldn't complain. Ordered the brisket dinner and it was quite large and came with two sides. Brad, the owner was very pleasant and told me that he made the potato salad fresh daily. I noticed that they have fish fry on Fridays and next time I will order that. I like the fact that the rolls come from Miller's Bake Shoppe, a local enterprise. I found everything to my liking and they had huge portions. I did not try the sauce so I cannot comment on that. read more

We ate here last night and were really disappointed. I ordered the sampler plate, brisket and chicken. For sides I had the Mac and cheese, and French fries. The fries were hot, the Mac and cheese was obviously not homemade. The only saving grace on my plate was the cornbread. Husband and friend both got ribs, and brisket. Brisket again so dry it was hard to get down. The restaurant was clean, that is one star, and the cornbread which we all did like is the other. We will not be returning. read more

Great food! I don't understand the poor reviews, this place is great. My husband had lunch here a few weeks ago and raved about the food so we went back for dinner tonight. He got a full rack of ribs (thinking it would be maybe 8 ribs) and was surprised by the large serving be received (we didn't count but it was probably 10-12). I had the pulled pork and it was so flavorful it almost didn't need sauce. However, I did add sauce because their mild bbq sauce was delicious. The coleslaw and Mac and cheese were also awesome. While we were eating we overheard the owner (who was very friendly and helpful) talking with other patrons about their gluten free menu. They have an entire separate menu and go to great lengths to make sure the items truly are gluten free. I heard mention of gluten free mac and cheese and gluten free hush puppies (advanced notice is required of you want those). Check this place out! read more

Sooner does not know how to cook ribs. I have called them out on this time and again and they never listen. If I want pulled pork I will order it at $10.00 a pound. When I order the pricey $26.00 ribs they fall apart when I try to cut them. Just a mess. They would never win a rib competition. You need tender with chew. Stopped by there to eat today. Got the brown bag special (BBQ, slaw and bagged chips). I honestly didn't get a great taste from the meat, it was bland, the cole slaw just didn't have a great taste. I'm sure you can spice it up if you put some BBQ sauce or ketchup on it, but that wasn't what I had in mind when we got it. Maybe adding some seasoning would help. I've eaten at Sooner twice this month and highly recommend it. The barbecue is hickory smoked,on premises and couldn't be better. The current owner, who bought the business about a year ago, has made a lot of positive changes to this business. The service is friendly, food top notch and prices very reasonable. Also, Sooner is now open for breakfast. It's a bit of a drive for my wife. However, though we have many choices, it's worth the drive to get some really good barbecue---pork, beef brisket or chicken!
