Very arrogant. Guy tells me he's been on this business for 30 years. Tells me he'll look at my car for no charge. Then he tells me I need several things done. I was gonna tell him that I'll come back for the other things. He gets mad and tells me to come take my car. Then I said what the hell and I got one of the things he told me done. I used Paul for my repair needs from when I moved in to Astoria in 2005, until I moved out in October. Always quality service from him and his employees. After you dropped car off, he would call you 30-60 minutes later, telling you what you would need, with pictures sent to you. Used layman terms to explain any issues he found. He would also be honest, and tell you that your car is in great shape, and only needed an oil change. Prices were reasonable. Repairs were always done when he said they would be, and I never had to go back because a problem came back, or wasn't resolved. read more

TL;DR: I have never been treated this well by a shop - even ones that I love and have been going to for years. This was above and beyond service. I got stranded in Astoria (I live in Brooklyn) on a Saturday when my car's (2011 Mini Cooper) alternator died on me. After googling a few places to take it, I came across Paul's and while they couldn't look at it that day, they were able to take it into their lot and they promised to look at it on Monday morning. The shop opens at 8 am so I figured I'd call around 9-9:30 to see if they had a chance to get it in. At 8:15am I got a call from Paul where he explained, in detail, his diagnosis for the car, what he thought needed to be done that day, what could wait, and very fair rates for everything. (I had already anticipated some of the work and looked online to see what it might cost). Throughout the day, Paul sent me multiple video updates explaining what they were taking apart, why, and showing me the new parts. He was kind, efficient, knowledgable, and was even able to get me my car by the afternoon so that I was good to go back to work the next day. read more

Paul is the absolute best. He is honest and communicative and he and his team do great work. He's accommodated my schedule every time - even once squeezing me in for an inspection and tune up at the last minute even though he was fully booked that day. The shop is also connected to a gas station, so you can drop off and pick up your car until pretty late, well after the shop has closed, which is really convenient. The prices are reasonable and I've never once felt that he pushes anything I don't need. He'll talk you through any questions you have and although he is obviously very busy he manages it well and makes himself available to you. I've never felt rushed to decide about anything I didn't understand. I like Paul so much that I left my family trusted mechanic of over 40 years! He was good, but Paul is better! I've been coming to Paul's for years. I've brought 3 different vehicles of my own, all older vehicles (10+ years), all with various mechanical issues when I brought them to Paul. He's always been a straightforward businessman and mechanic. I know enough about car mechanics to know when he shows me an issue, he's not feeding me a load of crap, and he's got enough integrity not to do so. He always take the time to actually show me the issue as well, without ever requesting to see it for myself. He's great with scheduling, and keeping me updated with any possible changes to the timeframe that he gives me on when the car will be ready for pickup. Great shop! My Honda needed a decent amount of work and Paul could not have been more attentive and accommodating, telling me which repairs were more urgent and which were ok to wait on. And I know he is honest because it was the more expensive thing that he told me to wait on. Also, the car was taken in immediately. No waiting around. Then he called 30 mins later with the full assessment, and everything was done within a few hours! I'm honestly blown away by the service here. Paul and his crew are really helpful. I've been going to the for past 8 years to get my yearly inspection done. Unfortunately for NYC and newer strict tint laws, they informed me they couldn't pass my car after I had already dropped it off. They didn't charge me the failed inspection fee and told me just to bring it back with the tint removed. Paul was very helpful and explained to me the new restrictions and procedures that NYC was putting in place in regards to the tint laws. I was able to get my tints removed and he happily passed me without issue. About two or so years ago, I had a small flat that occurred right before a road trip and I was in a rush to get it fixed. I brought my car to the shop to get the leak plugged. They pulled the wheel off and pressurized it in the water tank to find out I actually had an crack in my wheel. They don't offer wheel repair service but recommended a shop down the street that could help me out. Again, he didn't charge me for checking the wheel and helped me find another shop. I have used other Mechanics in the Astoria area and never felt very comfortable with the outcome. the explanations and cost always seemed to leave me asking, " Am i getting screwed?" Paul's is different. From the moment you walk in you have a sense of family and community! Other patrons come in and greet Paul like a well known friend. Paul is very detailed in explaining what is wrong with your car and what he can do to help fix it. His estimate is spot on and within reason. His labor prices are fantastic for the quality of the work you get so I had no complaint there. My repair was within what I expected to pay and the service was outstanding. Paul is like a friend I never met. You need to have your car repaired here ! We could not have selected a better shop and I would go there again and recommend Paul's to my family and friends. Paul sent two narrated videos showing the work being performed, the failed starter motor, his staff and super clean shop decorated for Christmas. I have brought my car here a few times to this shop. It was conveniently located for me. From day one, I didn't always feel like they were being honest about what the car really needed but instead, just trying to sell me on more repairs. I took it in recently bc I got a flat Tire (2nd time). The tire was not good this time, according to the shop, and I had to buy a new one. Ok. No problem. They offered me to have them ordered through them, but it would be more expensive (which they did make clear), so I said no, I'll find a different place to save on cost. Then I came to pick up the car, and they had put on the spare tire, ok great. However, charged me $10. I thought this was weird, bc the one time before, when they fixed the Same Tire that is now not good, they charged me $15. Fixing a tire is a lot more work than putting on a spare. So you almost got the same amount of money for less work done. I would have returned to this shop if he had said "You bring us business, so I am not going to charge you for just putting on the spare tire", just go find a better deal on a new tire so you are safe to drive." But no! that was not what I got. And the mechanic kept asking me "its fair right? its fair? The $10? If you have to ask, you clearly know it's not. Not coming back. It's the little things that count. I know Paul for many years, His shop has the most important quality any auto repair shop could have, honesty!

I used to live down the block from this repair shop. Being a auto mechanic who takes care of his vehicles, it was hard to trust someone maintaining my vehicle. I brought it in for an oil change. Shortly after I got a phone call that the engine needed to be flushed out and the vehicle had a special oil filter that needed to be ordered. It was a cartridge shouldn't of been any more than a conventional spin on. I was charged an additional $22 dollars for that in a pinch I needed it done so it cost me $52. Shortly after due to my bitterness and alternate side of the street parking I brought it to Paul's and told him I had a flat. Left it for 2 hours until I was able to get a spot. Go back expecting to pay nothing and he attempted to swindle $15 out of me. I had told him he had repaired it the week prior and let it go for free. Never again avoid this rip off and go down the block on newtown rd. Honest mechanics. read more
