Stopped in for lunch while antiquing in town. This place is one of those places you need to try if you're in town. I had the catfish po-boy which was crispy and full of flavor. My husband had the catfish & shrimp combo plate he asked for the fish to be cut tint thin strips and they were more than happy to do that for him. If you think eating at Sam's Club is fine dining, you will love breakfast at Paul's. My husband and myself stopped in for breakfast. The hash browns were like the ones served at McD's but not as flavorful. The eggs were cold and the sausage looked straight out of the box. Ok. They get two points for cool atmosphere and decor. Breakfast. Now understand that biscuits and sausage gravy is not a highly spicy flavorful mea. It is on the milder side of the spectrum. This place gives a new meaning to bland. The gravy had no semblance to sausage gravy. It tasted like flour and water. Thank goodness for the side of sausage I added to it and the liberal dose of salt and pepper. The husband got an egg sandwich. We each had two cups of coffee and a glass of ice tea. Nothing to write home about. We had the check on the table before they even bothered to ask if we needed anything else. Husband wanted another cup of coffee. While we were finishing up the meal a waitress with out an excuse me or pardon me started filling the sugars and salt containers making me feel as if we were being rushed in and out. As a matter of fact I spent less time in this establishment the. I have in a fast food place. The icing on the cake was the ladies restroom. A one seater. On a closet about 3ft by 3 ft. And a 6 inch step up to sit on the throne. Being temporarily handicapped and my leg in a brace. Unable to bend it at the knee. The facilities were definitely not conducive to my needs. A lot of locals dining here, says it all. I love Paul's. In 2014 we were heading from NOLA to St Louis, Mo and just happened to pull off I55 at the right exit, to have lunch at Paul's. Now, Feb 2018 we find ourselves back in Ponchatoula, not even remembering we had ever been here. Again, looking for lunch, we find Paul's. I immediately remembered and how much we had enjoyed it. Sure enough, same place, same great atmosphere, food, service. Glad we are going to be here for a month, so we can try breakfast, and all the other items on their very varied menu. Ok, first let me preface this by saying I go to Paul's every time I'm in the Ponchatoula/Hammond area. It's charming, friendly, and generally tasty. My usual choice is a poboy or sandwich with a Strawberry Daiquiri. My food is always very good. However, today my husband and I both got the specials- him red beans and rice and the roast beef and rice with gravy for me. Our food came out within a minute (yeah specials!) and we got to eating. My husband said his was good, not great, and my roast beef was disgusting. I mean bad. It was flavorless and tough as nails. The rice was ok, a little undercooked for my taste. I just sat there with my full plate and when the waitress came to bring our dessert (chocolate pudding, meh), she didn't ask about why I had a full plate I wanted taken away. To be fair, the place was the most crowded I've ever seen it, and she was young and maybe scared to ask. I would definitely go back, because every other time, it's been delicious. My husband and I were heading through towards the Causeway and stopped for breakfast. He had been here once when he lived here back in the late 80s. The pancakes are big and tasty. One was a little underdone, by overall, the breakfast was great. Friendly people and got to see Old Ironhide outside. I would recommend this place. read more

The strawberry daiquiris are absolutely the best anywhere. Paul has now retired and one of his seven daughters is running the business very well. They have a very good breakfast and lunch, closing about 2.00 pm. Down home type food. read more

Paul's Cafe was packed at noon on Sunday so we sat at the counter which we love to do. The service was quick, friendly and efficient. Paul stopped by a couple of times to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. Great customer service. I had the red beans, rice, and sausage and split a bowl of gumbo with partner. Partner had the beef and gravy over rice. Everything hit the spot. One of the better meals on the road. Asked about the daily specials and already planning to go back Tuesday for the fried chicken. I gave is four stars because the service is great and the prices are great! I came here for the yelp reviews and some were right on point. The biscuits were delicious. Denver omelette pretty good. Pancake, large, burnt and tasteless. Don't get the hash browns as they are the mcdonalds type. I think if you stick to eggs and biscuits then you are safe. So yes I'm a fan as you can't beat the service and prices. It's hard to mess up a pancake but it may be the worst I've ever eaten. Oh, and the tip is, use the restroom somewhere else. If you are handicapped, elderly or have a difficult time with small places then it will be difficult to maneuver. read more
