Good stuff at a decent price. Nice little small town cafe. This place can get packed to the rafters on the weekends. Apparently they have the best strawberry daquiri in teh area. Ordered one Monday from the breakfast menu; I'm vegan so there was an extremely limited section. The taste and speed were there but they need to add more fresh veggies to this menu. I popped in to Paul's with two friends for a Sunday lunch during a trip to Ponchatoula. I thoroughly enjoyed my platter with red beans and rice, rice with gravy, yams, and a piece of cornbread. Everything was amazing. I couldn't be in the strawberry capital and not have something strawberry so I ordered a strawberry daiquiri that was the cherry (strawberry??) on top for this meal. Serving sizes were large and if I'm ever back in Ponchatoula I will definitely be back and will probably split a dish so that I don't leave quite as stuffed. read more

Classic small town diner, in every sense. Good home-cooked comfort foods, friendly service, reasonable prices, filled with locals, etc. I've had lunch here twice, and most recently, breakfast. I'm more of a fan of their lunches, which is why I made the drive up on a Saturday morning for breakfast. Lunches are great. Fried chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, black eyes peas, and the likes. All very good and excellent prices. Oh, you get a free ice cream, too! I'd come back for lunch, but sadly wouldn't waste my time on breakfast, as the sausage gravy was just mediocre and the hash browns are clearly of the frozen food service variety. Traveling around Louisiana we stumbled apon gold Paul's Cafe. Tucked into a small town called Ponchatoula, Paul's was one of those places portly Australians only read about in books. Down right Southern Hospitality here! The place is clearly popular as it is busy! When tables empty they are quickly filled! We had no wait time whatsoever! I had the shrimp gumbo! Oh my it was mouth watering good! You are served a good size portion with plenty of shrimp and sausage! The staff ensures everyone is doing well and tended to. The owner walks around to make certain his customers are pleased and goes as far as to serve a cup of coffee if a refill is needed! Five stars for food, price and service. I had the red beans, rice and sausage and my husband had a hamburger. The hamburger was no frills, but had lots of flavor. My husband really loved it. The beans and rice were great as well. Simple good food at a great price. My entree came with a dessert. We chose banana pudding. Again, great. We left pretty stuffed. It seemed like one of those, "Where everybody knows your name" type of places. The staff was very attentive and kind. It reminded me of being back home or visiting my friends who had the dads who really want to make sure the food is good and everyone is enjoying themselves. We'd definitely go again. read more

Went with my boyfriend because we wanted to try something new and it seemed like a 'hidden gem' or something- plus the raving reviews. We get there for breakfast, and I don't know if they changed the way they do things but it was.. awful.. Just dreadful. I got a traditional breakfast. The hash brown was one of those oval things that McDonald's has for its breakfast. The bacon literally looked and tasted like microwaveable bacon (chewy and tasteless). The eggs were edible with lots of salt and pepper. I had to say something to our (awesome) waitress about the bacon- and she said her and her husband don't even eat it. I could tell she didn't want to rag on her place of employment, but she admitted to it being reheated. My boyfriend got biscuits and gravy, which he didn't like, but he said that it was more how they made it- not actually bad. His hash brown, eggs, bacon, etc were the same as mine. I'm giving this place 2 stars because our waitress was great, but man, this is 'Paul's old town cafe'! I was expecting a home cooked southern breakfast... I do not recommend. I stopped in for lunch and ordered one of the daily specials: roast beef w/ rice and gravy, corn, and candied yams. Having the corn and candied yams taste like lightly seasoned canned goods, while disappointing, is par for the course- It was the roast beef that shocked me. I am convinced that I was just served sliced deli roast beef with canned beef gravy. Paul's cafe both looks and tastes like a tourist trap. read more

Great food and great service. I've been there a few times. Paul (I assume it's Paul, he looks like he's in charge) is always there and walking around. He'll point out customers to his servers that need something or even help out himself. It seems like it would make me nervous if I worked there, but I don't, so it's all good, ha. He doesn't chew them out or anything, just makes sure his customers are taken care of. It works because the staff is great. Friendly guy, makes you feel at home. He cares about his customers and his business. Food has always been perfect, biscuits are more than perfect. Low prices, no complaints. Check this place out. read more

I love this little cafe. The Western omlet is Lage and fills the entire plate, filled with sausage, ham, bacon and onion. The atmosphere is very laid back with a lot of local flare. Memorabilia on the walls from earlier days. They also have a variety of wine from a local winery. I would have to say the blackberry is my favorite. As far as pricing goes , two people can eat a large breakfast for under 25$. The one drawback is the bathrooms are like 2 by 2 foot spaces. No joke tiny. We stopped to eat at Paul's Cafe while antiqueing in Ponchatoula, La. The atmosphere is nice and homey and very clean. What's most impressive is being greeted by the owner when you walk through the doors. The wait staff is friendly and efficient. The food is delicious and tastes like it's made from scratch like your Mom or grandmother would make. I ordered white beans and rice with sausage and fried eggplant and mustard greens. My husband ordered a bacon cheeseburger and fries. Everything was delicious and though I'm not a huge fan of mustard greens, these were the best I ever tasted! They had no bitter bite or aftertaste and were delicious! The portions are just right. I was expecting a piece of french bread with my meal but the cornbread though small was tasty too. There's a great relaxed feeling in this cafe and is frequented by locals for good reason: good food at very reasonable prices. Would very much recommend this restaurant. read more

Fantastic little full service breakfast place--table beside me had bloody marys--that is obviously a local gathering spot. Family owned and operated, and the owner will talk football with you. Paul's makes the BEST homemade strawberry dacquiris from real strawberries, not from a flavored mix. You can pay an upcharge for an extra shot of rum. An interesting side note for visitors not from around this area, you can get alcoholic beverages "to go", and no need to order any food at all. We always get the large that comes in a tall plastic, jug-like container with a super size straw. Super YUMM! The food is good with typical southern style breakfast, lunch is good as well and often features jambalaya, red beans and rice, etoufee, etc. Decent prices on the food. The restaurant is very family friendly. We love Paul's and always stop during our trek to New Orleans. read more

Stopped by this little café on our way back from New Orleans. All I can say is this is one of the best café's we have stopped at. Not only was the food amazing, the service was tops!!! My bf had the roast beef po boy and I had a cheese burger. His sandwich was HUGE! My burger was amazing! A typical diner type burger. The friends and onion rings were so good as well. The prices are very good! If you are ever passing through this area it is definitely worth the extra time to stop and eat there versus going through a drive thru. read more

My wife and I drove to Ponchatula, from New Orleans, to go to some antiques shops. We stopped in for lunch and were very surprised. This is a famous location.
