BEYOND ANGRY AND DISAPPOINTED!!! I ordered a cake from there, go pick it up today and it's NOTHING like what I asked for!!! It was supposed to look like a birch tree, and I got piped brown lines all around a cake!! I could have gotten better from Walmart! 100 + $ and this is what I got!!! After, several phone calls, I thought this was not a daunting task for such a "high quality" bakery, the supposed owners daughter was BEYOND RUDE when having spoke with her. I was told 3 different prices, then told i could pay when picked up, then called back again a dogferent day saying the order wasnt complete bc they needed payment, which was fine, i paid the entire thing over the phone, just very fustrating! EDIT: Owner did call to apologize, which was very mature and I appreciated. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I understand that this is busy wedding season, but that is no excuse to speak to a customer by yelling at her and making her cry! I am not one to leave bad reviews, especially for local businesses! But, after being yelled at on the phone by the owner for 5 mins (after which he asked if I still wanted to order a cake) I have to leave a review so that others do not end up crying after talking to him like I did. I have never been spoken to (YELLED AT) in the way that the owner spoke to me. We had been in contact for months about this cake and he told me to call the week of to get it ordered. He told me to fill out the online order form and he would email me a price quote. I never received an email. When I called, the person who answered said they were NO LONGER taking cake orders for this week! I told her that the owner and I had been talking about it, so she transferred the call to him, to which he proceeded to cut me off every sentence while I was trying to explain the situation. Finally, I said "please let me finish what I'm trying to explain" because he kept talking over me and down to me. He then said, and I quote "OH NO LET ME TAKE THIS OUTSIDE." He took the phone outside and yelled at me for 5 mins straight about how he has so many cakes to make, how I am interrupting his cake making, etc. I have never, EVER been spoken to that way in my life. After he yelled at me for 5 mins, he asked if I still wanted to order a cake from him! I would not recommend ordering from here due to the lack of respect for customers. My husband and I got married over a year ago, and we STILL talk about our wedding cake from Cocoa Bean to this day!! Not only was the cake beautiful and exactly what we envisioned, it tasted incredible and the service from beginning to end was impeccable. The cake tasting was so special to us, and Anthony made us feel super comfortable and walked us through all our different cake options. My husband and I had no idea what we were doing, but Anthony and his team made the process seamless and fun. Many of the cakes were given different names (black & white, wedding, etc.) but sadly they all tasted almost exactly the same. Even with different fillings. The cake was thick and had very little flavor. The icing was also very thick and like the cake, had little taste. The chocolate caramel was the best of the choices we tried, but over all we were very dissatisfied. Had expected much better after reading the reviews. read more

I love this places because of its lunch, not so much for its cakes. I love their sandwiches and they have great soups to go with them. They do have some good desserts and pastries, but I've just never had a cake from here that impressed me. They look awesome and have great craftsmanship, but the taste is just okay. Family member getting married had extremely difficult time trying to get in contact with the bakery attempting to place a cake order. After multiple contacts attempts over an anticipatory five month span, she was finally able to contact the bakery and they said only a week's notice was needed to place the cake order. When my family member called to place the order with the owner Anthony a week in advance of the wedding, she was met with shouting and cussing from Anthony, stating she was interrupting his cake decorating to place an order in peak cake season with no where near enough time in advance. He did not allow her to explain the information she had been told by the bakery's employees, and continued to yell at her until she hung up. Anthony did call back to apologize for yelling over the phone and offer making the cake for her, but we unfortunately had to decide against this bakery because of the original phone call and unsuccessful contact attempts. read more

Between the delicious cakes/pastries, the reasonable prices and the absolutely adorable and kind staff, it's always a joy coming in to pick something up. And look. I'm from New York. Best bakery in Hammond! Nestled in a quaint yellow "house" , Cocoa Bean has become a staple on the Northshore! Their quality is consistent, and they do a wonderful job decorating as well. I have 3 favorites from here: fresh strawberry shortcake, wedding cake, and the chocolate caramel cake. The latter is to D-I-E FOR!! If you love chocolate, caramel, and chocolate buttercream icing (I'm drooling as I type this), you must try this cake! They sell cake by the slice here, so depending on the day, you can stop in and try any of the ones I previously mentioned without buying a whole cake. Cocoa Bean also has a cafe that sells great lunch items (soups, sandwiches). I've trusted them to do some of the most important cakes of my life :) they've never failed me yet! Birthday, graduation, husband's birthday, etc. See my pics for some of the fabulous cakes they've done. Now the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because the customer service can be spotty at times. I usually ask for Chef Anthony when I go so I don't have to deal with the cashier/assistants' sometimes short attitudes. I went in for lunch, yes lunch! They have a small menu which is perfect because you know they have to master those dishes. I got the spinach artichoke panini and it was AMAZING. The flavors, the feta cheese, all the spinach and artichokes with the sauce was just perfect. I also got a full order so it was pretty hefty but I can eat just about any portion so it was perfect! A friend recommended Cocoa Bean for our wedding cake and all I can say is...wow. Cocoa bean surpassed my wildest expectations. From beginning to end, my experience with Cocoa bean was nothing but wonderful. The price was SO. REASONABLE. for a cake that was SUPERB. First thing first - My biggest fear was paying through the nose for a wedding cake that tasted like sugar-y cardboard. Yeah, I wanted the cake to look good...but my biggest concern was taste (although the simple design we went for ended up being PERFECT). The chef is very hands on and personally sat down with me to discuss all the details. We went through the tasting session together at the shop - he encouraged me to be honest with how I felt with the flavors and helped me figure out exactly what I wanted the cake to taste like. I had control over how much sugar went into the icing. We even had fun experimenting with mixing different flavored icings. After talking through the number of guests, and what flavors we liked, we ended up going with a two cakes in one!: the base was white cake with almond buttercream icing, and the second tier was a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. The top tier was a combination of the two so my husband and I can have both a year from now! A week before the wedding they called to "touch base". The cake would be ready to go! I had a bit of a change of heart on the flower decorations on it and we talked through if the cake would look good or not (it did!). They gave great honest advice but ultimately said "your cake will look good no matter what given your base design". They delivered a perfect cake ON TIME at a venue an hour away from their shop. Chef Anthony is INCREDIBLE! We had cocoa bean design two cakes for our wedding: a traditional wedding cake and a fun cake that incorporated both me and my husband. We met with Chef Anthony a few months before our wedding to do a cake tasting and discuss style. We weren't sure what we really wanted and he walked us through everything step by step and had so many incredible suggestions and ideas that really helped us find exactly what we wanted. The traditional wedding cake was beautiful and absolutely delicious. We were SO so so incredibly impressed and floored by the fun cake though!! We gave Chef Anthony six different tv shows/books that my husband and I are big fans of and he helped us figure out how to get them all on one cake without it just looking like a bunch of stuff thrown together. All we had were ideas and he took them and created something so unique and exactly what we didn't even know we wanted. I loved and adored it so much and it came out exactly like we wanted and like we asked! My dad picked up my birthday cake for Monday. Mind you, I have been getting cakes from here for over twenty years. I'm not the one who gets a birthday cake from here. I buy at least 4 cakes a year from the Cocoa Bean. My complaint is the rudeness of the manager. I opened up the chocolate covered strawberries (on the side until Monday) and there was 7 haves of strawberries. For that amount of money you think I would get the whole 8 halves of 4 strawberries. I'm boggled by how much a strawberry cost and I have less than 4 strawberries. Did you keep them? I called to complain about the lack of strawberries on an almost 60$ cake. I spoke with the manager and he actually raised his voice at me. He stated that they make their own whipped cream and it was 8.00 of whipped cream in my cake. So flour, eggs, and butter are 42.00? That's a huge mark up. I love their cakes and never had a problem until I realized how much money they have been getting from me and I feel like they just don't care. Definitely not worth being yelled at. I will never get a cake from here again. No respect. read more

Wedding cake is a FLAVOR, and it's not just for weddings! This cake is so popular they keep it in the case. We've bought them for every occasion, homecomings, farewells, just because. They'll write on them on the fly to suit your need. It stands about 10" tall with about 1/4" inch of stiff buttercream icing and a thin layer of raspberry in between the almond flavored round white cake. It cuts up beautifully and makes a really nice presentation for $40. The icing is VERY sweet, like southern sweet, cold and stiff. I don't like a lot of sweets but I can eat this because the raspberry filling gives a little tart or I'll scrape off top layer and it's perfect (for me). The almond flavoring is subtle and does not taste artificial or overpowering. I have had pastries here and I don't remember throwing any out, but can't say they were memorable either. It's THIS cake I come for. The shop is a little stand alone converted house, you can eat lunch in there but it's small. The counter help is always pleasant and will accommodating like having someone else pick up or holding the cake if you can't get in right away. Hours are limited for after work crowd to pick up something. So I place order on Fri and pick up Sat. They keep them stocked for the day, but run out by end of day so ordering is a must if you get off late. read more

My family has been ordering cakes from the Cocoa Bean for special events (showers, wedding, and birthday parties) since 2009. Never again after the terrible experience we had this past Saturday when we went to finalize a cake order for my sister's wedding. Our previous order, a birthday cake, was not filled correctly. Of course we didn't know this until after we cut into it at the party. We made sure to call and let the owner know. He assured us he would make it right with our next order. When we reminded him, we were met with suspicion. He was immediately defensive, contrary, and ultimately rude. Although he eventually agreed to apply the cost of the old cake to the new order, my sister left in tears. No cake is worth that kind of treatment. We ordered my wedding cake from The Cocoa Bean and I was VERY IMPRESSED!! The cake was SO delicious!!! not only did it taste good, but it was beautiful and very affordable!!! Unlike most bakeries, Anthony is able to do beautiful designs in buttercream instead of fondant (huge plus for me because I hate fondant) He was also reasonable on the delivery fee (he split our delivery fee with another delivery he had to make that was in our general area) Anthony is very pleasant to work with and is very accommodating. He also did both wedding and grooms cake for the same price that someone else had quoted us for just the wedding cake. We did a snare drum groom's cake and it came out wonderfully and looked just like a snare drum! People were talking about the cake days after and my sister decided to order a cake from there for her birthday cake a few weeks later because she wanted more!!! I suggest the chocolate raspberry and cream cheese cake or the chocolate and peanut butter - both are phenomenal!!!
