Heard all the buzz about this once beloved establishment opening back up in the neighborhood and decided to check it out. I went on a Saturday early about 10:45ish as a new customer. First of all, the girl at the counter had an attitude like any question I had about their menu was an inconvenience to her. Apparently how a basket works is it's half fries/half onion rings. How is anyone supposed to know that when the only clues on the menu are "basket" and price. So she got my order wrong and I had to clarify that and get a partial refund. I guess screw me for not knowing how they operate. Next, the PRICE. I paid $35 for a basic cheeseburger basket and a double cheeseburger basket; those Do Not include drinks. Why should anyone pay that much for fried food? I certainly wasn't paying for the customer service. Next, the wait time. I placed my order at 10:58am. It took 35-40 minutes for my order to be ready. I just don't get how they could have been that backed up that early on a Saturday after being newly open for a minute. The least they could do is offer seating if they are going to make people wait half an hour for "fast food". They had no chairs inside or out on the patio. Everyone was just standing around waiting for their food. Once I finally received my food, it was raining and since we walked there I had to interact with her one more time and ask for a bag. She gave me a tiny cvs prescription bag that fit one of the baskets. I got an eye roll when I asked for a second bag for my second basket. Last, quality. The biggest takeaway was the onion rings. The batter was great and they tasted better than ones you get at an average bar/grill. You can just get those for $5 and that's probably the best deal on the menu. The rest was forgettable. Paul's might be an KCK institution to some, but I suggest they are more of an embarrassment. The entire premises is filthy and dilapidated. I don't think anyone has painted in decades, the lobby has exposed cords, non-working lighting, handwritten signs with poor penmanship that are torn and barely hanging and a menu board that is falling off the window. Such simple and cheap issues to rectify but it appears no one gives a damn. The open view of the grill and kitchen is less than spectacular also with clutter and old equipment. The burgers are reminiscent of Hi-boys; fresh meat smash grilled and topped with lettuce, tomato onion and sauce; quite adequate, although the onion rings were some of the worst I've ever had - doughy and greasy. Sorry, I can't jump on the nostalgia bandwagon for this old hamburger joint, someone needs to pull the plug and start fresh. read more

Used to love this place. Tonight changed that quite a bit. While shakes we're being made the woman behind the counter said who even orders shakes this big f***ing pigs. This place has been around forever. I haven't been in many years but last Sunday, I decided I needed a mega grease fix. The first thing that hit my mind, was Paul's. It's tucked into the end of a triangle of streets. I think Osage is one and Argentine Boulveard is the other. It's just a drive-in and not a drive- through. That's right people. You have to get out of your car and walk inside up to the window. No car hops and no screens to talk into. You can smell the homey smell of old grease the minute you walk in. The lady taking orders was very friendly. There were three ladies in there. Two of them who were cooking didn't look very happy. One was propped up on some boxes cooking away kind of looking at me with the spatula in her hand like she wanted to come over and smack me with it. The other one was bent over the grill and she glanced at me with a disgusted look...so, if you're looking for ambience and enthusiasm? This ain't the place. What it is, is a piece of history. The way they used to make tenderloins, burgers, Italian steaks, in the old days. And thank goodness for it. The people work hard in a greasy, steamy, hot environment and I'll bet it is pure hell in the summer but...their finished products are junk food masterpieces....like an explosion of magic grease , splattering all over the sky wafting out a plethora of tongue-tingling flavors and aromas and scents that will send your nose into a sensory ecstacy. Now, you have to wait for this stuff. It's not sitting under lamps getting soft and spongy. It's cooked to order and it takes a few minutes. I ordered a pork tenderloin basket which is a nice sized pork tenderloin sandwich not those thin, overly crispy, practically meatless things that are twice the size of the bun and taste like a sandwich made of hot pork rinds...no, this tenderloin actually has meat in it and it sit regally, in the bun, slathered with mustard and mayo and shredded lettuce and onion. OMG! It's almost too much to describe. I'm getting aroused. Just a minute...let me compose myself... Ok, included in the basket are the standard greasy fries and 3 or 4 of the battered onion rings that are so necessary for making a true "basket". Listen, I got this gastronomic orgy home and I worshipped it for about 1/2 hour, savoring each deliciously greazy bite. I couldn't finish it. I had to leave some of the fries. I will probably catch flack for this review. I'm ok with that. Paul's is a solid drive in. That's it. They've got history, and I'm down with that. They've got their own ambiance as well. I'm down with that too. However, if it wasn't for Paul's location, good pricing, and regulars, I can't imagine it doing very well. Here's why: I got the cheeseburger basket with fries. There was nothing exceptional about the food. Standard burger dressing. A big bun, with a thin patty that was seemingly void of any flavor. Perhaps that was my mistake and I should've got a double. All I could taste was pickle, onion, mustard, and a hint of cheese. It's not that these ingredients tasted bad. However, I must ask, where is the beef? It was hidden underneath all that bun and all those condiments, as if Paul's was hiding something. Think a winstead sized patty (which I normally like) on a Grand stand sized bun. And the fries... People, you can make krinkle cut fries out of an ore-ida bag at home. I understand that many dives use them, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Paul's is no exception. As soon as I saw krinkle cut fries and tasted them, I was already wishing I just would've got a triple cheeseburger instead. Paul's has good things going for it, and the food is not bad. Hard to go wrong with almost anything here. Be aware that if it's between 11:00 AM-1:00 PM, CALL YOUR ORDER IN AHEAD OF TIME. The building is dirty, the staff looked less than thrilled to be there, and the food wasn't that good at all. Thank god it's cheap. Might be the worst onion rings I've had in my life. They are the tempura style, which I usually like, but these had a thick batter that was sweet like pancakes, and so thick that it was as soft and not crispy. I at 2 and threw the rest away. The burger patties are thin smashed. And they were okay. However the bun was dressed with shredded lettuce that didn't taste fresh, mustard, tomato, and pickles. I didn't enjoy the burger all that much either. The customer service here is horrific, with the employees squabbling and complaining right in front of a lobby with customers. While I was there, prob 4-5 other people got their meals as well, 2 brought theirs back because orders weren't correct, or were missing something. Everyone was wondering why it took 15 mins or so to get your order after ordering, when they were not all that busy. Only reason I don't give them 1 star is because the beef was cooked well, and tasted fresh. Everything else I had here was overpriced garbage. read more

When I called to complain about today's visit, she would barely let me get a word out before she got all defensive and finally said well why don't you just call the owner then! I only wanted to let them know about today's poor service. I want looking for free food or even an apology although it would have been nice to hear something as simple as "I'm sorry for your experience here or that you misunderstood" instead I got more rudeness and arguing.... and HAIR in my burger! OH-EM-GEE Paul's is AMAZING!! I've been going to Paul's since I got my first car in high school and could explore KC with friends (the better part of a decade :-P ). YUM. Every time I go I end up ordering the same thing but drool over the menu and other possibilities. SOMEDAY I'll end up ordering something new and will probably love it as well, but to this day I am extremely satisfied with the regular cheeseburger and onion rings with a red cream soda. He order a double cheeseburger and I ordered the tenderloin sandwich. Neither sandwich was hot nor fresh. The top and bottom bun were smashed as flat as pancakes.
