I cannot tell you anything about the service or the ambiance as I've never visited this location - however, I have eaten a lot (too much?) of their offerings at both Common Grounds locations in Greensboro. Baled goods-absolute winner! From hand sized fired apple and cherry pies to donuts and donut holes, pastries, upon pastries, upon pastries - absolutely yummy and consistent. The portions are so well controlled that it doesn't look like it's hand made but it absolutely is! I saw others say it has the best donuts - I will not go that far - but they are really good. We stopped by on a Wed morning. It was my daughter's birthday and we wanted to try their "grab and go" cake. I'll get to that later. We also tried the chocolate iced donuts. By far the BEST donut we have ever had !! We also got the fresh baked cinnamon rolls. We weren't going to eat them until the next day so we got the icing to go. We warmed them up the next day. Also super fabulous !! Delicious !! As far as the "grab and go " cake went. This was a loser. Chocolate cake (kinda dry) and the worst part was the vanilla buttercream icing. Just horrible. I went to the parade and it was freezing. I googled a coffee shop and this place popped up. After arriving here it was packed inside. The staff was working hard but they greeted everyone that walked in. I ordered hot cocoa and a morning bun with sausage egg and cheese. It was absolutely delicious. Ok we officially found the best donuts in NC. We were on our way for antiquing adventures and I have been watching Paul's creations for a while on Facebook. Finally! A chance to not just drive 40 minutes for donuts (done it before and so many shops have let me down!) Pauls was exceptional! We got taken care of right away and you could tell they had a busy morning, but there were donuts left at 9:30am on a Saturday. We got three: a sugar, Bavarian cream and raspberry lemonade, plus a coffee. Donuts first: o m g. Incredible. Soft, perfectly proofed, not too sugary and well balanced. The sugar was incredible, Bavarian cream luscious and raspberry lemonade was sweet tart. The only note and it is not a criticism: they were so full! Incredible. The place itself is cute: gave me some old NYC vibes and the donut monsters are wild. Definitely head that way if you, like me, need some good donuts in your life. read more

This is a classic in Burlington. They're only open early and run out quickly. They have delicious coffee and service and a convenient drive thru. Their cakes are amazing. I love the Italian cream. Doughnuts on a different level! I've been hearing People comment about these works of wonder so I called the night before for a 7AM pickup the next morning. Got there, picked up two dozen to go and as soon as I grabbed the boxes I knew this was on a DIFFERENT LEVEL! Holy Toledo! Firstly, they are beautiful and secondly they are serious homemade doughnuts. It was a incredible value and my customers raved about them. They have a expresso machine so you can get all the exotic coffees. Be aware, they open 7AM but my call ahead was handled flawlessly for those of us that have to get going early. My 1st experience here was wonderful and from there... never again. Unfortunately. This morning was the absolute worst yet and it's put me off Paul's for good. I'm not driving all that way when I can't depend on the business to provide consistency in service or product. The hours are open at 7am. I arrived approx 7:15am and neither the donut holes nor the glazed donuts were ready. At that time there were also only 4 cake donuts available. If you open at 7am your product should be ready for customers at 7am. I've been wanting to try one of Paul's plain cake donuts for a year and this was my first opportunity. It was THE MOST disgusting donut I've ever had. And I've had donuts all over this country. It was bizarre - it was like the dough was rolled out then cut because the donut was FLAT. No rise, no puff. Flat, like a rolled & cut biscuit or a cookie. It was way, way overcooked. It was very dense and didn't have a nice crumb at all. The flavor was "off", it did not taste good at all. I threw it away. Theres no way the shop should have sold that product in the 1st place. I'm very disappointed. The sweet & spicy donut holes were, for the 1st time ever, really lacking in flavor. Normally there's all sorts of spicy sugar on them and in the bag. This time they were essentially plain donut holes. The glazed donut was perfection. Today. Which is the reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1. And the owners are really really nice which is the reason I kept going back despite the inconsistent service & product quality. read more

Not everyone wants sprinkles and crazy designs on their Donuts..Some people just want their classic glazed or chocolate covered..And when they specifically ask for chocolate covered donuts and you give them what you think they should have not what they asked for is disappointing..Second screw up customer asked for one dozen.. half dozen plain half dozen chocolate covered ..and a additional half dozen in another container mixed..You claim that was to much to do and placed all the plain in one box and others in another..That would be great if they were all going to one place..but you made that decision even after customer specifically asked .. Paul's seems to generally hold a special place in the stomach's of most Burlington natives. As far as donuts go in the area, it's truly challenging to compete with these guys. For as long as I can recall, the donuts here have been consistent... and consistently good. The chocolate glazed, original glazed, and raspberry filled are my favorites. But really, you can't go too wrong with any choice. Despite donuts being their top seller, they do make cakes and cookies amongst some other bakery items, but I'd recommend sticking to the donuts. I've only been to Paul's a few times, but this will definitely be my last! I stopped on the way, taking the kids to school and thought we would use the drive-through and I would get donuts for the kids and a dozen to take to work. The sign in the drive-through says $13 for a mixed dozen so I presumed that's what I was going to pay, that $13 ended up being closer to $18. Which wouldn't have been a big deal if I had received what I asked for in my mixed dozen donuts. I had asked for the mixed dozen to be apple fritters, glazed, donuts, and Frosted with sprinkles. There was not a single apple fritter in the box and only two frosted wisp sprinkles. So paying $18 for a dozen donuts when you don't get almost anything you asked for makes it sting a little bit more. When I called to let them know, I was told their price went up about six months ago, and there was nothing that they could do about it that if the drive-through price was outdated, it just was what it was. No receipt was provided. I only found out by looking at my bank charges. Will definitely not be back. read more

I've lived in Burlington for 6yrs now and decided to finally try Paul's Pastry. I'm not sure about everyone but one thing I enjoy about living in the south is "Southern hospitality" and after visiting most places in Burlington it's actually something I expect, it's the norm. Unfortunately, my first and last visit to this pastry shop did not meet that standard. Not one smile or a good morning, the entire visit. It bothered me. I watched as other people entered and were greeted and immediately thought Starbucks would never! I've been waiting to try this place and I'm glad I did, because I know I'm not missing anything special. My advice, go to Dunkin, Starbucks or Krispey Kreme. Customer service can make/break an experience and this pastry shop definitely lacks customer service. I won't even review the donuts we bought because, who cares! Wow! These doughnuts are great! I am a devout Krispy Kreme junkie and cannot stand Dunkin' Donuts. I never thought I would like a donut as much as KK. These are different but really amazing. They almost have a bagel-y, doughy chew. Really good. I only needed one to put me into a sugar-induced Roofie-like coma. I ate a chocolate glazed and it was perfect. The store looked a little tired. The best I can say is.... These donuts are fluffy and light and not drenched with thick slimy icing. The donuts have just enough sweetness. As I said, the donuts are light, and NOT like eating a round piece of pound cake that settles like a brick. Not like the commercial Krispy Kreme that's overpowering. However, I would beg to differ.... We went to Paul's for the first time this morning. The donuts are the same size as Krispy Kreme--so don't expect bigger. Everyone in our family decided the regular glazed were nothing to write home about. They were actually a bit doughy. Our neighbor had mentioned they don't like Paul's. I was thinking they were gravely WRONG because of all the great reviews on here. But now I have to sheepishly admit, I'd agree with them. My thought on Paul's.....eh....could take or leave them. They're quite a drive from us, but definitely not worthy of the trip again. Granted, I would give three stars for their filled donuts (or at least the lemon filled and barvarian filled). THUMBS DOWN for two which were supposed to be filled and were EMPTY!!!! So they were just round glazed lumps. NOT happy about that AT ALL! What you should know....NOT a lot of choices here.
