My wife dropped her shoes off here and was told the heels on her boots could be repaired and was told they needed two weeks to do it. 2 weeks later we went back to pick them up and they weren't ready so we called and they said they would be done the next day. I called to make sure they were ready as I was getting the feeling they hadn't even started on them and was told they would be ready in 30 minutes. We went in and they hadn't even started on them. This was 2 weeks and 2 days later. We heard the man fixing them in the back. My wife was on an important phone call so I didn't think to inspect the shoes when I asked her for her card to pay. He put new heels on the boots but it is not smooth on all sides and definitely not flush as it should be. We are both upset. Me with myself for not checking before paying and both of us for going to Paul's. They may have been good back in 1992 when they apparently were established but I would not recommend them to anyone. It looks very unprofessional and will include pictures. Not to mention the fact that they held onto the boots and didn't even try to fix them until we arrived 16 days later. I hate to leave such a poor review for such a delicate shop but I will not be returning. I had dropped off my shoes in February to get a zipper fixed and was told that they would be ready in a week. I come back a week later not only to find them untouched but also misplaced. I waited 20 minutes for him to find the shoes just to tell me to come back in a few days. I am not exaggerating when I say this reoccurred countless times over the span of a month and a half. I would walk into the store he would search for my shoes and then tell me that I should come back in a week. I did not get my shoes back until the beginning of April. They did not acknowledge the time issue ever throughout my countless visits and charge me full price. When I got home I had found that the sole from one of the shoes was missing and that the zipper repair was mediocre at best. The owner seems like a lovely man but if you are looking to get quality shoe repair this is not your place. read more

Holy crap. Don't know where to begin. Brought my shoes in for one zipper to be replaced. Normal stuff for a shoe repair guy, no? I dropped off my shoes March 3rd. He said that they'd be ready by Friday. I go in on Saturday; he says they're not ready and doesn't give an estimate. Long story short, every time I went in after that, they told me the shoes would be ready "tomorrow". As my mom lives closer to the shop with a more permissive schedule, I tasked her with checking on my shoes to see if they would ever be ready. The technique is to tell you it'll be done "tomorrow". To quote Les Miserables, "tomorrow never came". I imagine something in my spitfire mom's skepticism got them to choke up the reason. They had lost the strap on my boot. Not to worry, they weren't going to charge me. For the piece they lost... Well my mom successfully got my shoes back. Please, check the photos for the quality workmanship. I can't help but wonder if they offered a group of middle schoolers tequila shots and asked them to sew. Good lord. And this beautiful piece of art only took Paul's 7 weeks. Harry's on University and Sacramento will have them fixed by Wednesday for less than it cost Paul's to ruin them. ETA: Paul's handed these shoes to my mom with a straight face and no offer to refund the $60 (!) I had prepaid for the service. read more

I've been taking my shoes to Pauls since the 80's and have always received great work and great service, however, the last time i took my boots to be re-soled the repair was very sub-standard. I think because the men who work there have been there since the 70's and because of their age and possible sight loss that the quality control have been lost. i can't speak to the lack of customer service, I've never experienced bad customer service. STAY AWAY FROM HERE!!! Never even think about going here. I am a 68 year old retired professional. I own a pair of suede house slippers. Recently one of them developed a small, about one half inch, tear in the toe. I simply wanted them to put the a patch over the hole. I brought the slipper to them and told them to put a patch over the hole. That's it. I just went to pick up my slipper. After looking for parking for some time and not finding any, I double parked in front of the store. I intended to quickly bring my claim in and go back to my car and wait until they found my slipper. I went in and saw a person whose name is Eddie. I said that I was double parked and wanted to drop my ticket and go back outside. He literally ignored me and turned his back on me. I couldn't believe it. I will be 69 years old next month. This was my first-AND LAST- visit here. Eddie then started berating me. He said "You don't have any manners! You need to learn respect!' Again, he turned his back on me and ignored my question. This is beyond belief. He also ruined my beautiful slipper. When I brought it to them it had a tiny, about one half inch tear. What they did was make this small whole much, much LARGER. It is now about 3 times its prior size. He said that he glued something in from the inside. It looks like some scrap material. The new material sticks out from the now large hole and is sticking out of the toe. No stitches at all. Some glue on the patch which now sticks out the hole. I could have done a better job myself. Again, they ruined a beautiful suede slipper. I was told I have no manners and respect because I pointed out that he turned his back on me. DO NOT GO HERE. THEY WILL RUIN YOUR SHOES, AS MANY OF THE PRIOR REVIEWS STATE. Don't subject yourself to being berated because you ask a question. Disgusting! I brought in a really comfortable pair of Clarks after the OEM soles wore out. They said 4 day turnaround and they were as good as their word; workmanship is first rate. I got the boots at an outlet store, and resoling cost as much as the original price - so I can't say it's economical unless you factor in the value of keeping a good pair of walkers that are broken in. They put a proper Vibram rubber sole in place of the OEM urethane, so I expect them to last more than 2 years this time. I will come back for my resoling needs. read more

It PAINS me to do this, but i have to say it, this place is terrible. The gentlemen who own this establishment are as nice as can be, pleasant even. However, the quality of their work is terrible. I took my very expensive Fluevog boots in to have the shafts stretched, and the man at the counter explained that he couldn't do that and that he needed to realign the zippers. I was desperate to wear my boots so i agreed, asking several times about the neatness of how it would be done, and the man assured me that it would be fine. Fast forward five days when i pick them up... contact cement everywhere, gaping stitch holes, sloppy stitching, the zippers were coming UNDONE, the leather layers were wrinkled and just terrible. They were practically DESTROYED. it was a nightmare. I didn't know what to do, so i paid the guy and got the f*#$ out. After crying my eyes out and trying to fix the huge mess i took them to Model Shoe Repair where the guy took one look and asked, "Did you take them to that place down the street?!" He KNEW!!!! ugh. So in all it cost me 250 for a 20 stretch. Again, the guys who own Paul's are super nice.... but they need to retire, because the "workmanship" is just not there. read more

Getting my boot repaired through this business was a depressing affair. One of my favorite leather boots, a Harley-Davidson calf-height boot I wear almost daily for regular (non-moto) wear required a new zipper. When the left boot zipper gave out about a season ago, I had brought it to Elmwood Village Shoes. This time, it was the right boot's zipper. Paul's business was only 2-3 minutes walking from my work, just around the corner, which is why I chose to try this place out. A terrible decision that would cause me grief and regret. Visit #1: Dropped off shoes, was told to come back on a certain day not quite a week later. Received a receipt. Was not asked for my phone number. Visit #2: Swung by an extra day after they told me to come, just in case they were not ready. Indeed, they were not ready. Their excuse had to do with there being a holiday. But I gave them an extra day. I believe this is the visit when they told me that at least they had received the zipper. Um.. Visit #3: Came back looking forward to reclaiming my fixed boot, again giving an extra day to when they told me to come back. They said that due to something to do with the people that they outsource the actual repair work to, the boot was not yet ready and that I should return in yet another week or so. Was quite annoyed. Visit #4: They wasted 30 minutes or so of my time searching their back room, turning it inside and out searching for my boot. I told them what it looked like. I had my receipt. They were painstakingly slow in the search, I offered to help them look! But they didn't take me up on my offer; they just ignored me. They offered to finally call me when it arrived instead of me just coming in. By this time I was enraged. Visit #5: 2 weeks or so after the last visit, I returned. Note that they never ever called me to let me know about the boot. I just came in wondering WTF was going on with my boot. Did they lose it? Was I going to 'lose it'? I was in a rage wanting to scream and cry that I had wasted all this time and energy by this time. I was quietly, hysterically believing that they wouldn't have it ready YET either and I should just give up on my beloved boot. My boot was in fact there. I couldn't believe it. I paid maybe $28 for it. I felt that they shouldn't have charged me after all that goofiness called customer service, but I said nothing. I tried to remain calm and not say anything nasty to anyone. I just wanted to get the hell out of there with my boot and never, ever return. BOOT RESULTS: The boot ended up with this weird lump at the bottom of the zipper area. The zipper runs along bottom to top along the inside of my leg, ankle to calf. One of the men there had told me upon initially inspecting the boot that he would leave a bit of 'leeway' or something because he thought the area needed it. So I expected this, but it was unattractive and I didn't really see how it helped the repair or the way I wore it. A month later, my boot is in need of repair again. The zipper doesn't work again, the threads/seams with the surrounding leather has weakened and is falling apart. The lumpy 'opened up' area (or whatever) seems disfigured. (Having learned my lesson, I took it to Elmwood Village Shoes. I told them of my shoe repair woes, and they fixed it quickly (less that 5 business days before I got a call), and charged me about $34(?).) * The two men that work there seem nice enough as people, but they are much too slow and do not seem to possess the mental wherewithal to provide proper customer service. * It is strange to me that they do not want your phone number to begin with to call you when the shoe(s) is/are ready. Do not go here. Instead, go to Elmwood Village shoes on College, near Ashby. They are much more professional and responsible. read more

The two older gentlemen that run Paul's Shoe Repair should retire. Neither one of them can see well enough to continue repairing anything. I brought in a $90 pair of sandals for some minor repairs (replace stitching) and got back a shoe that was only half fixed and more than 4 days overdue. So, instead of doing the smart thing and just taking my sandal and leaving that shop forever, I handed my sandal back to him and told him to finish the work. What a horrible mistake! Those two blind old men didn't make one straight stitch, used glue on the face side of the sandal and actually cut half-way through one of the leather straps. I was shocked and horrified. I admit,I went to Pauls instead of my usual cobbler because it was convenient for me and I was impatient to get the sandals repaired. I will never make that mistake again! I took my sandals to Harry's Shoe & Leather Repair on University Avenue, just west of Sacramento Street in West Berkeley, and had Paul's work repaired and the rest of the work completed on time (within two days) and for $10. I've used Harry's several times in the past and I will never go anywhere else again! I think it's time for Paul and his grandpa to retire. read more

Oh, how I wish I'd read reviews on Paul's Shoe Repair before taking in my Italian-made dress shoes! This pair of shoes, purchased many moons ago, doesn't see the pavement too often. They are my "dress up" dress shoes. (Read: rarely worn.) However, they were in need of a heel replacement and, so, I thought to take them to be repaired locally. As another reviewer mentioned, the awning of the shop is dirty and could use a cleaning. Sadly, the same should be said for the store's interior. Paul's is a cluttered tangle of shoes, shoe boxes, and various shoe creams. The display case, atop which all transactions take place, could stand to be tidied and its products arranged neatly as well. Back to my shoes: When I arrived today to pick them up, I was met by the senior gentleman of the shop. Perhaps the owner? In any case, he found my shoes and presented them to me. The repair was done seemingly well enough. However, there was some damage done to the soles during the repair process. I wasn't too perturbed by the damage, but made mention of it. He responded defensively to my claim, and quickly refuted any notion that the scratches on the sides of the soles could've been done with the tools in the shop. I could only say that the shoes hadn't looked as they do now before being repaired. This gentleman then went on to say (almost talking to himself as he said it) that he'd better inspect all shoes that come into the shop from now on. He repeated this assertion a number of times until I felt compelled to respond with, "That's a reasonable alternative." Before I could finish my sentence, he began saying over and over, "That's right it is." I quickly paid and left the shop vowing never to return. Had this gentleman at least been able to entertain the notion that, perhaps, accidents in his shop could indeed happen, then I don't think that I'd be feeling as sour about the whole episode as I do now. I wasn't so bent out of shape over what had occurred, but rather his response to it. --don't need to be made to feel like a shoe-lunatic; I'll go elsewhere for shoe repairs. 2014 update: I took my shoes in to a shop where I now live to have minor repairs done. I took two pairs of shoes and two bags there for cleaning and repairing. I told them a week earlier that i was going to pickup on Friday which they promised, only to realize on Friday that the shoes and the bags were discarded in a corner and without being touched at all. They told me that they are going to work on it and I can pick up three hours later - same thing, I came back and the shoes and bags are still in that corner without being touched. First off, let me address some issues about shoes. If you bought your shoes for less than 100 dollars, more than likely, your shoes were mass produced and were made of bits of crap. Cheap shoes are not repairable. The shoes are glued and are not hand-crafted. These gentlemen are master craftsmen. If you have shoes that were not mass produced, they can fix them because they have the technology. Of course, it's old world technology, but they have it. What you need to ask are the right questions: Are my shoes cheap? Is it worth fixing them? Was the shoe designed to be worn for a long time or are they throw-aways once worn? I bought PW Minor shoes from Paul's five years ago. He said that the shoes were like tanks. It will last five years. The price was pretty steep at $220. Guess what! The shoes are still here on my feet. I am plotting ways to get a new pair because it's been five years and I have not worn them down. The leather has been marked from daily walking, but the shoes are fully functional! I have ordered a 3rd pair of PW Minor shoes from them. In addition, thee repairs of the PW Minor shoes are possible because they were made in thee old fashioned way. They can completely remove the soles. When the newer shoes are made, the soles are an integral part of the shoe. The design of the shoe determines that the shoe can no longer be repaired because it would cost too much or it would be very difficult to do. You want repairable shoes, buy quality shoes. I echo what one reviewer said. Thee pains in my knee are gone. Better than surgery! Cheaper than surgery! I have bought a total of four shoes worth $220 each from them. One was for my brother. The rest was for me. I put my money where my mouth is. $880 dollars of business. How much did the negative reviewers spend? You folks decide whether this place is good or not. read more

I have been going to Jim and Eddie at Paul's Shoes since 1982. I am surprised to see so many negative reviews. These guys are excellent at customer service and they do know shoes. They take care of my business shoes on a very regular basis and they keep extra thick leather in stock for me so that I can visit a little less often. What I am always amazed with is the people that go there. There are people that have different leg lengths, people with orthodics, and all sorts of special needs clients. I have heard several people say that their podiatrists have referred them to the shop. This is a great place for shoe repair and I should have posted this review years ago. read more

Yes!! I took my waterproof stylish boots to a cobbler in Berkeley, and they told me the soles of the boots couldn't be fixed because they were unique and custom fit to the boot. On a whim, when I was in the area, I brought them by Paul's on Shattuck and asked him before bringing the boots to Goodwill. Paul said absolutely they could be fixed. And sure enough, he did it and helped me save a favorite pair of boots!! On top of that he shined them up for free, so they look better than ever. I first went here for repairs to leather ice hockey equipment, not shoes. After another local shoe repair store sneered at my goalie pads and refused to work on them, I a), noted which shoe repair shop I'll never go to again and, b), walked into Paul's down the street. They instantly accepted the work and correctly identified the structure of the pads (hint: a lot different than shoes) and did good, solid work that fixed the problem and extended the life of the pads by a few years. I've since taken my shoes to be repaired here and have no complaints- in fact, a sole that they installed came unglued after 1-2 years of constant use and they reglued it for free. This is 4 stars, not 5, because sometimes with the goalie equipment they misunderstood the instructions and had to redo work (all for free). Also, sometimes the stitching/gluing would be extremely visible- but again, this is all for work on items that aren't in their normal range of expertise. read more

I'm resurrecting a Yelp account I haven't used in years just so I can warn others not to go here. It's that bad. Warning: this is a long and angry review. I should have listened to all the other one-stars before giving these guys a shot. :( On Monday, I brought in a pair of cheap little oxfords from Amazon that I bought for like $20 two years ago. The heel was worn down/snapped on both of them and there were some scuff marks on the toes. I also brought in a piece of luggage with a broken zipper. They told me: - The shoes would be ready by Friday (which I confirmed again via phone call Thursday) and would cost about $20 to fix - The zipper would have to be ordered from a special place in LA (??), would take a week or so, and would cost $50 for the zipper alone -- yikes, but oh well, I'm going on a trip in 3 weeks and luggage is an investment, right? They gave me a tag that said "82.50" on it, which sounded a little pricey, but about right for two major repairs. I dropped off the shoes and the luggage at the counter. I returned today and the first red flag was that my luggage -- which has an ID tag on it with all my personal info -- was sitting in the exact same spot I left it, right next to the chairs, accessible to the public. I try not to be too paranoid, but damn, you couldn't at least move something with personal info a little out of the public eye? Anyway, I said I was there for the shoes and presented my ticket. The guy showed me my shoes (which were completely un-fixed) and said it'd be another 20 mins. Like, why say they're ready Friday if they're not going to start working on them till I come in? Oh well. I took a walk. When I came back 25 mins later and showed them my ticket again, it took them five mins of looking just to locate my shoes again. They suddenly couldn't find them and didn't believe me when I said they'd literally JUST shown them to me a half hour earlier. Anyway, they finally located the shoes, and said it'd be another 5 mins. I was irritated -- I'm on a break from work here, and now this is longer than I'm really allowed to be out -- but oh well, what can I do? When I was sitting down, I looked at the luggage again and it said $80 on it, which was waaaay more than I was expecting to pay. I asked the guy at the counter if I could take the luggage back since I'd might as well just buy new luggage at this point, and he agreed. We took it off my ticket and I took the luggage back. Finally, 15 mins later, the guys came out with my shoes. They told me ... drumroll ... it would be $52.50 for the shoes. WHAT?! In no world would I pay over twice what the shoes actually cost me just to repair them. I was baffled and told them that it was much, much more than I was quoted and didn't even make mathematical sense ($82.50 - $50 at least from the luggage = ~$30 for the shoes). Like 5yrs ago I got a similar repair done at a shop on Durant, and that only cost me $15, so I expected the price to go up some (we ARE in the Bay Area ...) but this was waaaay outside my frame of reference. They then told me that the luggage was never going to cost $50, even though I had literally just seen that price on the tag that was sitting on my luggage before I took it back. I said that I was quoted $20ish just a few days earlier and I know I could go to other places and get this work done for a reasonable price -- not to mention, at this point I'd rather just buy the same crappy pair of shoes again than pay this price. I even showed them the Amazon listing for these shoes, which were around $22. We went back and forth on what was quoted -- with all 3 of these guys going off on me, saying this was "disappointing" and implying I had lied about the quote they gave me, until I got totally freaked out and almost started crying -- but I still held firm and said I simply wasn't going to pay something so far above what was quoted. They eventually told me that they would do it for $37.50 and, late for work and totally panicky about this whole ordeal, I agreed. I shouldn't have given in because I feel awful about it now, but I feel worse about being put in such a shady and dishonest situation in the first place. One of my coworkers had a good experience with Paul's, but another one had a very similar encounter where she left feeling ripped-off and confused. The cherry on top is that I finally checked the shoes (I know, I should have checked before I left, but I was super stressed out by the confrontation and wanted to leave) -- they left glue stains on the shoes, the new heels/soles are put on super shoddily, and the toe scuffs are literally worse and more widespread than they were before. They may be just down the street from my office, but I am literally never going there again and we're gonna do our best to avoid them. This whole ordeal was ridiculous and confusing, not to mention altogether dishonest. Please go elsewhere -- it's worth the walk. read more

I know about feet, as a chiropractor, and I send my patients to Paul's for expert attention for difficult to fit feet, shoes that need building up because of leg length discrepancies, etc. I also get my shoes fixed there. My wife has a pair there, now. She is getting her favorite sandals reinjected with life so she can travel with them on vacation. If there is any criticism it may be that their assistant may be a little unorganized. Anything work that has not been done to my absolute satisfaction they are assiduous about correcting. Entering the store is like going back in time to the 50's. There is nothing slick or gimmicky. The old gentlemen who run the establishment are close to my parents age have nearly a southern charm. It is my understanding that they bought the store from Paul back when they were young. Old style shoes, old cabinets, bottles of dye and polish and antique equipment in the back, if you peek around to see it. It is one of the very last holdouts of old-style charm and service that you can find anywhere. Where else can you go in and get 20 minutes of unhurried advice on how to use a $6 product? read more

Please do yourself a favor and keep walking past Paul's if you want your shoes repaired. I took in a pair of expensive boots to have taken down in length. I told them if they thought it wasn't going to work I'd forget about it. They assured me it was no problem and they had it covered!! and it would be ready for pick-up in a week. One week, two weeks, three weeks...you see where I'm going with this. I was then told to come in and try them on because they couldn't finish till I tried them on. So I did, and didn't like what I saw, but again they assured me it wasn't the finished product. Another two weeks went by and I pushed for a pick-up date on the phone. Finially I got my poor boots back and I almost cried when I saw them... So if your in the market for insoles or comfortable shoes they have a small selection and can help you. My back and feet were hurting bad so I decided to visit a real shoe store. The man was helpful and reasonably friendly. The styles of shoes were limited and over $100 but worth the theraputic value. Only one person has teased me about wearing "old man shoes", but most say they look cute, AND expensive. This place has been here over 50 years so if you are one of those people who likes old school malt shops and record stores, you can really vibe off this place. I also got some shoes altered here because they were bruising my feet. I thought I wasted 60 bucks but they fixed 'em. After a few visits these old fellas warm up to you. All in all a place that I will go because I am over 30 years old now. I would have given four stars, but they use the old style credit slips which hits the bank depending on when they do the books. I went 3 times over the past month and am still waiting for two charges to hit my bank. The only one that has been charged to my bank account is the second one I made...? I will be back. read more

These guys are friendly, yes, but friendly isn't everything. I took a pair of sandals to them for resoling, then picked out the sole I wanted from their catalog. Waited three weeks for them to get it in, and when I went to pick up the sandals, they'd put on the wrong sole. They didn't offer to get the right one and re-do it; just told me that the sole they'd put on would be fine. It isn't, and I won't be back. read more

Dropped of some casual leather shoes to be resoled. After paying $60, and having my shoes take 6 days (a day longer than they had promised), my shoes were done. They looked like they had been thrown together in 15 minutes, there was glue on the shoe, and the shoes look terrible. The midsoles and outsole were not flush and some places weren't even glued together. 0/10 would recommend, take your shoes elsewhere unless you never want to wear them again. read more
