Honestly, ignore the rating, this place is 5 stars in my book! I needed my boots repaired last minute and called to see if they could have them done the same day. They were so nice and accommodating, and they got them done SO fast. The work was excellent too, i was really impressed with how they turned out. I had called a few other shoe repair places first, including some with higher ratings, and either the prices were absolutely ridiculous, they were rude on the phone, or they didn't even answer. I travel all the way from Alameda to Oakland's Lakeshore district just to bring my shoes to Ike's--and it's absolutely worth it. I've had three pairs of designer shoes repaired here, and each one was restored to perfection. The pricing is very reasonable: I paid $15 for a simple heel replacement and another $15 to have the cloth strap on my Valentino slides reglued. My Tory Burch sandals didn't survive a night of salsa dancing--the straps came completely off both shoes--but Ike's brought them back to life for $45, and they looked brand new! They have a clear policy of paying in advance for repairs, and they accept all forms of payment. There's plenty of street parking nearby, which makes dropping off and picking up easy. They also carry a wide selection of shoe accessories like inserts, laces, polish, and leather oils. The owner has been at Ike's for seven years and took over the business just last year. His craftsmanship is amazing--he truly has a gift for reviving worn shoes and giving them a second life. One less shoe in the landfill is a step in the right direction, in my opinion. read more

I brought in a pair of heels that needed new soles and was charged $85.00. When my husband went to pick them up today, the shoes had glue on them and there had been no effort to match the soles with the color of the heels. This is the second time in the last few months that we have had to request a re-do on shoe repair because the first effort was astonishingly poor. It strikes me that this must be a tough business. Customers walking in with shoes and boots and leather goods in every possible state of wear, from thrashed leather, worn soles and heels, broken stitches, and every degree of wear and tear you can imagine and they come in and ask these folks to give them a second life. They do a great job with whatever they're presented with and always try to give me an honest assessment of their ability to fix what I'm presenting them with. My latest experience involves my two pair of Tony Lama Monterey Desert round toe Ropers (which are THE BEST horseback riding boots), one I wear with spurs, one without. Well, they don't make these anymore (frustrating) and I'm trying to extend their life as long as I can. I wear them every day and they take a beating. I'm grateful that I have Ike's shoe repair to bring them to for a life extension. My latest refresh included new heels and soles, goat hide leather conditioning, and conditioning and cleaning of my spurs. They always do a great job and they gave me at least another year extension on my beloved boots. I highly recommend Ike's for tough restoration jobs (as well as everyday maintenance work). I left a backpack and a piece of carry-on luggage for repair here. The carry-on luggage had a broken wheel, and they fixed that just fine for $35. The backpack had two problems: first, it had two giant holes at the bottom of it, and second, it had the logo of my old company, which I wanted them to sew a patch over. They wanted $65 for this job, which seemed a little bit steep to me, but it is a comfortable backpack so I wanted to keep it. Well, they did fix the holes at the bottom by sewing a large leather patch over it. But the company logo remains, they completely whiffed on that. I thought about complaining about it, but I need this backpack for a trip coming up in just a couple of days. So I am not thrilled that I paid a bunch of money and only got half the job done. read more

I have a very nice golf bag that I was getting ready to throw away because I thought the broken zipper was a done deal. Someone mentioned a Cobbler Shop should be able to fix it and did not even think of that. Since Ikes is close by, I gave them a shot and brought my ripped zipper golf bag over. Gentlemen looked at it and said "of course we can fix that". Told me to come back in 3 days to pick it up. I had zero expectations as Ive never done this and the bag I brought was a very nice bag that I figured was not repairable. Picked up when they told me and the bag as done! Original zipper pull was put on and the zipper track and zipper was replaced. If I didnt know any better, I would not have known any difference from factory to this this. I feel compelled to write this in part because of the negative review just below... The new owners are wonderful! Daniel and his wife (sister and brother-in-law of the former owner) are so lovely and accommodating, prices are fair and reasonable, and turnaround is fast. I even saved an extra stop and had some keys copied while I was in the shop. To remount a wheel (I had the original wheel) on my big roller suitcase, reinforce the panel it screws into, and fix some bursting seams was under $50. Highly recommend! read more

I have used this business for the last 30 years. The original owner during those years was reliable, straight forward and though he was not overly friendly, he was pleasant and I enjoyed doing business with him. I always thought the prices were fair and his work met my expectations. I was always amazed when he could find my order in a brown paper bag when I had misplaced my shoe repair tag. This new owner, however, has nonexistent customer service skills, the work is just OK and it appears to me that the prices are very arbitrary and high. I had a recent request for service and after I dropped off my items, he called me back to tell me that the price that he quoted me would not be enough to cover the service that he and I had just discussed. In order to get the service I anticipated I would have to pay double the amount or be satisfied with a very odd and unfinished looking, finished product. I thought the original cost was exorbitant but this development was ridiculous. I made another trip over to pick up my item and told him after 30 years of supporting this business, I was disappointed and sadly would look elsewhere, he didn't seem to care. read more

TL;DR - I am definitely going to bring my boots here for future resoles. The gentlemen were helpful and honest with answering my questions. Did not try to upsell me or anything. Strictly business. Bought a pair of Wolverine 1000 Mile on eBay for a steal, the only downside was that the boots needed a resole. Originally, I was going to take my boots to another cobbler but the cobbler said they would be closing their doors in a couple of weeks which made me look elsewhere for a resole. These gentlemen added a fresh layer of cork and a rubber vibram resole. I won't put how much I paid since most shoe requires something different but I am happy with how much I paid: It's not the cheapest prices but they are average compared to other cobblers. As a side note, I have a pair of Red Wings that I had resoled by Red Wing and paid slightly more than what Ike's charged me but I did not have to wait 2 weeks to get my boots back. Bought a new pair of leather laces when I picked my shoes up and instead of charging me for 2 separate laces, I was suggested to buy one long lace that could be cut in half. Put the laces on and I still have excess length that I could cut shorter if I wanted, but I prefer to wrap the excess around my ankle. In the end, there ARE negative reviews but my experience was pretty seamless if you ask me. ;) I added a picture of the new stitches just in case you're interested in seeing their work. read more

Beware! There's a reason they have bad reviews. They are scammers. They charged me $25 to fix a zipper on my pants but when I went home and tried them on the zipper was still broken. I went back to see if they could fix it and he pretended to wiggle it around but not replace the zipper like we agreed. It appeared fixed but actually was still off track and he actually had not done anything to fix it. I explicitly said what did you do to fix it and he literally said nothing! I ask for my money back but he said there's no guarantees. If you bring something here just be okay to not get your money back when they pretend to fix it. I feel scammed, at least it was $25 but I worry for others who may have more expensive repairs and get scammed out of their money. read more

I was blown away once I stepped into Ike's shop on lakeshore. It exudes professionalism and the owners who know their craft. Everything was so orderly, tidy, their works space immaculate, and all the clients shoes packaged neatly in brown paper bags with the tags stapled to the bags. Instantly, I knew I was in good hands and trusted whatever they would do for repair. I brought in a piece of light luggage (bag) that needed the zipper re-enforced as well as some patch work to repair the bag itself. The repair was a bit more costly than other quotes I received, but again, I knew it was going to be done "right" so I went ahead and had my item fixed. They are scammers: say will do, lie, breaks again, you go back, they want to charge more for no job done. They supposedly changed a zipper. They charged me $35 first, but the zipper broke a month after. I went back and they said they did not change it completely, but only made some adjustments to the old zipper straightening the teeth (no joking less than half of an inch!). No wonder why it broke! $35 for a tiny bit of adjustment of not straightened teeth!? The said if you what a whole new zipper is $95. 1-The lied to me 2-they charged me too much 3-they wanted to charge more for the job they were suppose to do in the 1st place. Do not come here! When I visit my family in Latin America, I will bring these shoes. There is only $10 for a completely new zipper. $90 vs. $10? = scammers charge the highest here. Awful experience, I would NOT recommend taking your items here. I brought in 3 pairs of shoes that desperately needed new soles (exposed nails, peeling soles, etc.). I expressed to the gentleman that I wanted all of the soles completely re-done with something nice and sturdy--regardless of cost. He said ok and charged me $38 to replace the soles of each shoe ($104 total). Flash forward one week later...I go to pick up my shoes and notice that only the front half of the sole was replaced and not the heels of the shoe. The guy started arguing with me saying he said he thought the heels did not need to be changed and he was just trying to save me money......even though he charged me full price. They do not have service prices listed anywhere, it is a free for all pricing system (and I definitely felt there is was some prejudiced profile pricing). Then, he suggested that he can place new heels for an additional $20 per shoe! He kept arguing and yelling at me, to the point that my baby started crying! I left and have no intentions of returning. I will go somewhere else to have the job completed. THIS PLACE WILL SCAM YOU FOR MONEY. As a small businesswoman and supporter of small businesses, I know how customers should be treated. I went to Ike's Shoe Repair and I'm unsatisfied. I brought in 4 pairs of boots and only one pair was done correctly. He did a great job on my black Derby Swirls, he put my new heel caps on my Gladstone boots and reattached a strap on a pair of doc martens. However, don't bring him suede. He overbrushed both pairs of my suede Fluevogs which affected the color on them and removed most of a printed logo on a pair. I also specifically asked to have the multitone Doc Martens polished with clear polish and he used brown and altered the color of the boots. read more

I had an excellent experience here. I was closing my hard shell travel bag, preparing for an evening flight when my hard case bag seam ripped. I called this establishment and was told over the phone they would see what they can do, no promises. Parking can be a little crazy at their location. But there are metered spots. They assessed the repair and said the next day. I can see they had plenty of work ahead of mine. I insisted... I needed it in 2 hours and they were able to accommodate my request. I am still traveling with the same bag. The repair has held up! I like my luggage and it's part of a set. I am glad I will have many more miles of wear left for them.
