We dined at Pawley's Raw bar while visiting the island and had a good experience! They don't take reservations but we arrived at 3pm on a Friday so it was empty. The atmosphere is super fun, lots of cool island and nautical decor. Although we sat inside, they have a fun outdoor space and playground for kids. We were seated and greeted right away, and our server was incredibly friendly! They have a pretty extensive menu. One nice thing about the menu is that they have options that are not just seafood. We all got waters & I ordered a glass of Cabernet. I'm a sucker for Oysters Rockefeller so always try these at a new spot! These were really delicious, however, there was quite a bit of topping on the oyster and it could've been a little lighter, but still so yummy and would order again! We all ordered either the grilled chicken or grilled shrimp tacos for our entrées and they were outstanding! They are served with beans and rice but you can substitute for any other side. We ordered the chicken tenders and fries for our daughter and she enjoyed them. She's also obsessed with pickles, and the server brought us a few extra which was very sweet. My first time ever coming to this restaurant was Friday, September 14th. I haven't eaten that entire day because I was so excited to try something new in a different area. After eating there around 3/4 pm, I started having stomach aches, diarrhea, & nausea. I am still going through all of that to this day which is Monday, September 21st. I went to the hospital yesterday and my doctor told me I have caught food poisoning and because of that my colon is inflamed! I have not eaten anything since last Friday when I ate here. I would rate this a 3.5 after stopping in for what we hoped would be a quick bite to eat on the way home. When we arrived, the restaurant was not busy but they were clearly understaffed and the wait was 30 minutes. We decided to wait since we had already been on the road back home to Myrtle for hours. We started with the calamari which was tender and phenomenal! We shared a steamer pot for two, which my 9 year old could have crushed and then some on his own. It was a bit pricey for what you got. The shrimp were super overcooked so almost impossible to peel. We were missing the potatoes in our pot but never saw our server to let her know and by the time she did come by she was exhausted from running around all her tables and we didn't want to bother her. The food took another hour to come out and it made for a super long night. We love this place. We've been coming here for at least 4 years, and every time we come it is a great experience! The she crab soup is great. For non-locals and/or new visitors, she crab soup is a staple of this part of South Carolina. Pawley's Raw Bar is up there with the best. Today, I had the blackened grouper tacos, which were some of the best I've had. Seasoned perfectly, with fresh pico de gallo, soft tortillas, and a filling side of rice and beans. I don't remember exactly what I ordered in the past, but I know I've always enjoyed it. The service is quick and friendly, especially when you go for lunch, as it is not too crowded! And finally, the ambiance is inviting and beachy. Whether you're outside or inside, there are plenty of fun decorations to look at, and there are also fun rainbow lights throughout. I know that's a kitchen problem, but the server did not communicate well with us so that we could make an informed decision about whether or not we'd like to stay... they kept saying "it's coming soon" for an hour when it was not in fact coming soon. We've been loyal customers of Raw Bar for 15 years, making it our go-to spot for our annual reunion dinner. Sadly, this will be our last. Our party of 10 (thirty minutes to be seated which is fine) but we waited over 3 hours to get appetizers and entrees--again. This is the second year in a row we've had the same problem: not enough staff to handle even a half-full dining room. On top of that, they were out of several basic drink ingredients that could have been easily restocked from the grocery store next door. We were on bikes and no real bike parking. The place is clean and when you walk in everyone greets you. I liked that the restaurant did not over decorate. I hate it when things are shoved in every place of our could... This was tasteful. I got the crab cakes and they were good. I prefer Kiki's in Maryland and this was not that type of crabcake. This is inland crab cakes with h half being breading. For what it was it was very good. You would not be disappointed as long as you don't think you are getting a lump crab cake from the east coast. I would order the crab cakes again. My husband had the raw oysters and loved them. They carry 2 kinds and the best ones are the smaller ones. Overall the place was clean and nicely decorated. It has "Shack" in the name and that is appropriate given that it's a Pawley's restaurant... it's just a bit rustic and shabby in a good way. It feels like an old spot on a dock on the coast. You expect to look out the window and see a fishing boat pulling up. Food is good, no complaints there. It's casual so don't expect that you will get a charred octopus with truffle butter or saffron cream... likewise you will not pay that extra $25 for your entree. There is a lot of frying going on here, that's not a complaint either, just come ready to enjoy great fried seafood. We've been on a Friday or Saturday night and the place can get crowded and noisy... it can border on "crazy", but the staff seems to hold it all together. Stopped there for lunch with my friends , we always try a different restaurant in our area for lunch . So we felt like seafood the interior was quaint and had a fireplace and tables and small bar . I ordered a cup of she crab soup which was 7 bucks but absolutely delicious it beats the always winner Lees Inlet kitchen . It was full of crab , I also had the oyster poor boy 16.00 which came with fries and slaw it was also delicious , my friends the shrimp poor boy and fish which they liked. And their key lime pie . I would definitely eat there again but it is probably very crowded in the summer . We always rate the restaurants we try and this one will definitely not be on THE ONE AN DONE LIST! They had a "bangin" sauce that gave it a bit of a kick. They should invest in those taco holders though, so that the tacos aren't a flat mess with stuff falling out. It just looks much nicer. Rudest hostesses and manager I've ever seen. We were given a buzzer thingy (that most places no longer use) and was told 45 min wait. We started noticing people getting sat that came in long after us after waiting for an hour. When we asked hostesses, they couldn't find our name (the page had already been thrown away) and the rude girls acted like we never put a name on waiting list. However we HAD THEIR BUZZER IN HAND. Manager came over, we explained situation and he told us where to sit. No apologies at all for forgetting us nor being rude to us. Second time visiting, a nice family restaurant for conversation and decent food (setting expectations) . The Top Shelf margarita (pictured) was one of the best I have had in the area! The fried green tomatoes appetizer was very good, enough for 3 if sharing. The fried oyster plate was OK, felt about right for my expectations. The oysters could have been fried a bit less (lighter), the fries were very good and not soggy as you sometimes get at places with a fried meal, not here - very good fries. My wife enjoyed the bangin shrimp salad and rated it a 4, which is a good rating from her/us. The wait staff was busy, and still friendly and attentive.
