Cannot be more thankful for this place today! I desperately needed a daycare for my cat while my apartment was being preventively sprayed with pesticides and thought me taking him to get groomed would do the trick but I was not allowed to leave him at the groomers. I called paws in Chelsea in a desperate time of need and happened to be down the block and they were life savers! They told me to bring him in immediately and were able to keep him occupied for a few hours for an amazing price. I cannot thank them enough for their graciousness and being so kind to my nervous and frightened kitty. Not many places take cats and was so grateful for their help and hospitality. read more

We boarded our dog for four nights at Paws in Chelsea while we were on vacation. We received a call one morning from one of the staff members who were concerned with a bleeding wound found on our dog and suggested an immediate visit to the vet. The veterinarian found the cause of wound to be inconclusive but did confirm it seemed to be (recently) environmental and not self-inflicted (as our dog could not personally reach that area on her body). They did not rule out another dog attacking ours but said that was most likely not the cause. The fact is that we dropped our healthy, clean dog off in good condition and she left with a serious, visible wound as the pictures show - this was not there prior to the drop off and it's quite frankly insane and offensive that was up for debate by Paws of Chelsea. I'm giving two stars as the staff was professional and communicative in handling this issue, on the way to the veterinarian. However, there was zero accountability on their part and we were met with excuses and blame. Paws of Chelsea did give us one free night of boarding which was appreciated but was not nearly as much as we had to spend on an extremely expensive vet bill and the discomfort our dog suffered. Based on reading other reviews and how the owner chooses to respond, I do not suggest this place for boarding. If someone is choosing to board, I HIGHLY suggest doing a full examination with pictures, before dropping off your dog and signing their waiver. read more

One star is not low enough for my experience with Paws in Chelsea. This boarding facility cost my family nearly $20,000 in vet bills/continuing medications and the good health of my pug. It's actually taken me a few months to write this review due to the traumatic nature of what we went through because of their negligence. Admittedly, we left Frances here a handful of times before her tragic stay in February of 2017. It was a convenient location for us and she seemed to enjoy her time there. However, on this particular trip, I dropped off a vibrant, healthy dog and was given back a dog that was near death. I immediately took her to a vet who said she was in critical condition and sent me to a hospital. There it was discovered that she had eaten over a dollar in change and was suffering from zinc poisoning. They questioned whether she would survive the night. I was in shock. Many days and blood transfusions later she was back home but with permanent damage to her pancreas requiring expensive medication for the rest of her life. The emergency vet determined that the coins were eaten during her stay at Paws. The fact that she was given access to a toxin and enough unsupervised time to eat as much as she did is beyond negligence. It is animal cruelty. The most frustrating part to me was that, after 7 years spent successfully protecting her from harmful foods/substances, one stay at Paws turned all my worst nightmares into reality. Paws, of course, accepted no responsibility for the incident and magically did not have surveillance footage for much of her stay (allegedly the footage is 24/7). The owner claimed there was "no way" a dog would have access to coins, however, if you check their Instagram account you will see countless pictures of dogs behind the front counter where personal items/office supplies are kept in plain sight and money is exchanged. I have attached a picture to illustrate that point. If this review seems excessively harsh, it is because our dog is truly like a child to us. For an organization that claims to love animals to cause an animal as sweet and vulnerable as she is so much pain/suffering and then accept no responsibility is incomprehensible. There are many great options for pet boarding in NYC. Pick anyone else and keep your pets far away from Paws in Chelsea. Edited to add that Dennis, the owner of Paws, continues to shirk responsibility and invent excuses for this nightmare. His words are empty and motivated by his desire to draw business rather than by genuine care. His continued assertion that there "aren't coins" in his facility is ludicrous, as is his delusional statement that Frances was sick when she was brought in. Frances was a perfect, healthy, hyper, 8 lb, 7 year old pug when she entered Paws on February 18th and was near death when picked up on February 23rd. Aware of her voracious appetite, we are vigilant about keeping ANYTHING bite sized out of her reach. Paws' staff failed in their vigilance. He has been told directly by Dr. Rosenbaum at Blue Pearl that Frances ingested the coins at Paws in Chelsea and continues to contradict his medical opinion with speculation and untruths. All I can say in conclusion is that I wish I had listened to the negative reviews for Paws in Chelsea rather than making my decision based on geographical distance. I am 110% confident that if I had gone elsewhere my dog would still be in good health today. read more

Paws in Chelsea saved us when we found ourselves in a pinch at the last minute before a 5 day trip. The first time leaving your pet is always difficult, but I was in a panic and I'm so glad Paws was there to save the day. Our girl had a great time meeting new friends. It took her a bit to get acclimated and the staff was so patient with her. Even going so far as to hand feed her when she went on a tiny food strike. You can't check in on your pet 24 hours a day, and that was better for us. I'm glad we didn't have that kind of access because we would not have enjoyed the trip; we would have been watching her. I emailed twice a day and the staff responded quickly, reassured me that she was fine and sent me pictures of our girl with her new furry friends. We put our trust in the staff and they exceeded all expectations. We will be recommending to everyone and will definitely be back! Thank you so so much! read more

I brought my dog in to be groomed and my dog was ruined. I was mortified when I came in to pick up my dog. I asked them specifically to call me before making any drastic decisions, and though they may have had my dogs best interest at heart - so they say, I would never have OK'd their decision. It is the dead of winter and my dog is just 5-6 pounds, and I don't know how anyone could ever justify shaving a dog that small down to their skin. My dog is so cold I can hardly take him out on walks and it has made him very uncomfortable, and that eats away at me everyday. It kills me to see my dog in such discomfort and no one should have to go through that. The receptionists are lovely, but I would NEVER recommend that anyone should take their dog here. The groomer is horrendous, the building is disgusting, and they made no effort to rectify their mistakes after multiple disappointed and frustrated phone calls. I am sad to be writing this review, but what occurred last week is just unacceptable. I brought my 1.5 yr old dog in for daycare (this is the second time she's gone) last Friday after a good experience the week prior. I left her there with full confidence that her well-being would be looked after. At about 4:30, I checked my personal email to find an email from Paws saying that my dog had had diarrhea all day along with blood in her stool. In a fit of panic I left work and went to get my dog. When I arrived, she had cuts all over her head and a huge scrape inside her leg (she plays rough so this doesn't surprise or concern me usually), and she has dried diarrhea all over her hind end. My anger started once I had calmed down and settled down my dog. My biggest concern is that there was blood in my dog's stool, and they didn't call me. They emailed me and I didn't see it until 3 hours later. Why would you not CALL the owner when something as serious as blood in stool is happening?! And on top of that, why would you not clean her up if there is diarrhea all over her? You would assume that if the dogs were playing rough enough to scrape their heads multiple times breaking skin that they would have been separated, but clearly this did not occur. I am extremely disappointed because in my correspondence with them they promised high quality care and that is certainly not what I received. My dog will be going to Biscuits and Bath from now on and will never be coming back to Paws. read more

I just had my very old cat groomed at Paws in Chelsea. The groomer did a fabulous job and my old cat looks like a kitten again. The groomer was very gentle and no anesthesia was used. She did a thorough job and I couldn't be more pleased. The price was very reasonable plus the groomer is available on Sundays (and Wednesdays) so the appointment time was very convenient for me. I leave town every few months and so I use pet-sitters a lot. This was the worst experience with a pet-sitter I've ever had. My main complaint is related to what I feel was price gouging listed (I feel intentionally) uncleanly on the website and the incredible rude response of the owner. I had left my cats here over the Christmas holiday a year and a half ago and based on the website's description of a $6 "Additional Holiday Charge", had budgeted to pay more on Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Years Day. How wrong I was- I was shocked by how high the bill was when I went to pick up my cats. It was at least $150 more than I had expected. Much of it was due to how they choose to define "holidays". They don't define it like the vast majority of other businesses, but by the "holiday season". I tried to address this with the woman working the desk, but she said that I had to pay what was on the bill and that I could take it up with the owner via email. I emailed the owner, and she was not in any way courteous or empathetic and immediately got defensive and couldn't get over the fact that I was quibbling over money when her business worked so hard to take good care of my cats. After more than 2 or 3 incoherent rambling emails on her behalf, I finally got some of my money refunded as they had messed up the multiple cat discount, but she ardently refused to refund any of the money I paid in their egregious holiday fees. She also refused to be more specific about what they consider holiday dates the website so that her clientele could be more informed before deciding to use their services. Bottom line- if you're looking for straightforward, reliable, trustworthy, and courteous service, try someone else. read more

To insure the safety and health of all their "Boarders" they require and check that your pet is up to date on all vaccinations. A real big thumbs up!!!! Never again. I had brought my cat here twice before, and have never had an issue, although I was skeptical about how much exercise he would get, he was always fine once he got home. This past week was the complete opposite. When we picked up our cat after just TWO DAYS, he was absolutely COVERED in filth - dried up cat litter was stuck to his fur, there were pebbles in his ears and stuck to his paws, dust and clay all over him like dried cement.... it was horrible! When my boyfriend picked him up, he was told it was because our cat would not "allow" anyone to clean his cage.... so he was in a dirty cage for over 48 hours. I am calling BS on this! They claim they let the cats OUT of the cage once a day to stretch their legs.... if the cat was let out of the cage, they would not have had any trouble cleaning it! How were they (allegedly) able to feed him, but not clean out the cage? AND how could they let him come home so disgusting and clearly miserable? I now don't believe that they ever actually opened the door to give our cat the chance to stretch, let alone clean out his space. We had to give the poor cat a bath when he got home. The kicker to all of this? We were in town the entire time, simply moving apartments. I told this to Paws in Chelsea, and that if there were any issues to call me and we would come by. I never got a phone call, no email, NOTHING. If my cat was being difficult to the point where he was literally lying in his own fecal matter and dirty clumped up litter, why wasn't I notified until he was picked up? It's now been three days since we brought him home from his 2-day stay, and he is clearly sick - he has been coughing and vomiting and hasn't eaten today. Probably because he was trying to clean himself when he was so filthy. If this keeps up, this quick stay at the boarder will result in a very expensive vet bill. I would give this place a 0 star if there was an option for that. They kept our 13 yo cat for 6.5 hours just to groom and with no water. That's not a way to treat any living creature. My dog Kingsley goes to Paws in Chelsea just about everyday. Me and my boyfriend really wanted a dog but knew our work schedules were pretty rough. We checked out all the doggy daycares we could find and fell in love with Paws from day one. It was the cleanest and friendliest one we saw so we decided to give it a shot. Now it is his home away from home. Monday morning he drags us there because he can't wait. When I pick him up to go home I have to carry him out sometimes to get him to leave he loves it so much. I talk with other dog walkers on the way there and find many of them taking their precious dogs to the same exact location. I feel like Paws is really a part of the neighborhood and everyone knows and trusts them. The people there go above and beyond. When we go out of town we debate where to leave Kingsley. We tried the friends houses where they seemed more put out then anything. We tried having people check in, but we were just nervous the entire time. Then we left him at Paws and he was just as happy as he always is. They don't do cages, which was a major plus. Now we don't even think about where to leave him when we go out of town, it's just what time should we drop him off at Paws. He loves all the people that work there and we can tell that they love him too. We're new dog owners so they've helped us find a vet, helped us switch out what food he should eat, and they give us a rundown of his days activities when we get there. This place is the best, and I do mean the best, place to leave your dog if you have to travel without him or her. First of all, like olivia l. said, it is crateless boarding - allegedly, the only place in Manhattan that goes crateless. This is super important to me because I have a rescue dog as well and he despises crates. As in, he won't eat or sleep or drink water if he is forced into one. No bueno. Secondly, the staff is awesome. You can tell that they are genuine dog people, and they "get" dogs. They keep their patience when dogs (mine, specifically) explode into the room and jump up and put their paws on the counter and knock stuff down and skid around on the tile like some crazy-ass. They are gentle and kind and firm, and that is exactly what dogs need. Finally, the dogs share rooms with other dogs of like energy level and temperment. My dog is an 8 year old Golden Retriever who, once he gets acclimated to a place, sleeps a lot and plays a little. He was placed in a room with two regulars that were also 7-8 years old and liked more rest than play. He was able to be social, which he loves, but not too social, which he does not love. And he had a bed. It was awesome. And let me tell you, I have never seen him happier after a stay at a boarding place. He had no tummy/digestive trouble when he came home, he was tired, he was happy - I am so glad that Paws exists. Now I don't have to feel so guilty what I board him - it's like my dog gets a vacation too! FYI - they do NOT accept male dogs that are not neutered. Bottom line: this place is so worth the money, no matter where in NYC you live. read more

My husband and I just rescued a kitten and we were going on a week vacation in another week or so. Since we already have a cat, we couldn't leave our new kitten behind until they were ok with each other. Plus it would have been way too much for my friend to deal with two cats since she wasn't staying over our house. So I had to think fast and find a place for our new addition to stay. I looked Paws up on yelp and liked what I read. I decided to go and check it out as well to get pricing and more information about the place and what my new kitty will be up too. I didn't get a chance to do a tour of the place but it looked ok from what I've seen... The pricing wasn't bad considering it was a last minute expense but I had no choice. I took my kitty in on Saturday afternoon (she was staying for a week) and I had the option to bring my own food, which I did for my kitten and they took her to the back. I didn't want to leave her, but like I said I had no choice. On our trip to Vegas, I did call in every few days to check in how she was doing and they said she made friends with another kitten, played and ate all her food. I was happy. They really enjoyed having her there too. Saturday came and I picked her up. Everything ran me $280 but I was quoted $195. The guy said something about holiday rates...but because it was a last minute thing and my little kitty was fine I paid it. Hopefully I wouldn't have to leave her behind again, but if it came to that I would go back. read more

Paws is a magical place. I literally cannot walk my dog anywhere near their 24th Street location without him PULLING me there. Julio, my dog, goes for day care and boarding. The staff is knowledgable and loving - I am pretty sure Julio likes to be at Paws more than he likes to be at home with me. Sure, he needs a bath when he comes back from boarding but that's to be expected. Crateless boarding is the only way to go. I love the idea that Julio has friends at Paws, in both the other dogs there and the excellent staff. I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I have taken my Jack Russell- Chihuahua here to board and have been so satisfied that I have taken her here for daycare when my sister came from out of town and wanted to roam around without my doggy feeling dehydrated due to NYC hot summers. Friendly & helpful staff although they are very busy seems like. I like the cageless boarding and she seems to come out fine. Of course, with any boarding house with cageless keeping, it is only logical to want to wash your pet after housing with other dogs. Obviously they check vaccinations first before accepting pets. Would like to give no stars. This place made my 11-year-old cat, who had never been ill a day in her life, so sick I had to take her to the vet and miss two days of work! She's still not eating after the vet said she had caught a stomach flue! I've watched my pet suffer because of this unsanitary hell hole! My cat smelled like poop on the cab ride home. It angers me that I called them to tell them my healthy cat was now sick when I picked her up, and no one ever called me back. I'm looking at spending even more money on vet bills because after almost a week my cat is still not eating. If my cat dies, it will be because I boarded her at Paws. I feel guilty for taking her there. They knew she was ill when I picked her up last Saturday, and so she must have been ill the day before while in their care. It's a shame they get away with this stuff, while they make pets sick and are still paid for the boarding. It's something they are or aren't doing that is causing pets to get sick. If you love your pet, don't take them to Paws, because they will kill your pet and bankrupt you in one swoop. Worst place ever. I'm so angry. Update: After reading response from Paws: Do you read all your reviews? One person said Paws almost bankrupt their family, from medical costs incurred from boarding their pet there. I took my little pup to try out the grooming services. I am planning to try out their boarding services now that I saw how they handled her during the grooming process. Let's just say she isn't the easiest thing to deal with as she is quite the little squirmer and has a shriek that could make you wish you were deaf. I've boarded my 50 lb mutt dog Lilly here a couple of times and she really seems to enjoy it. I really like that they don't use cages, and the staff seems to be pretty friendly, plus they are close enough to drop Lilly off on the way to the airport. They lose a star because there is no outside area for the dogs, but since this is Manhattan I can understand that. I never boarded my dog at Paws but I use their grooming services exclusively. I have a Shih Tzu/ Maltese mix whose hair tends to get matted very easily. One hot day, she developed a terrible series of matted hair clumps all along where her harness was and her ears. I called Paws the next day and they were able to take her in immediately. She was done 3 hours later and looked gorgeous! They always do a phenomenal job not only bathing and brushing but at stylishly cutting her hair. When she's done, she's not put in a crate until I come to pick her up. They have her sit out with the receptionist! I feel that my dog is in good hands when she's there. read more

I've used Paws In for 9 years, since my dog was 6 months old. For a couple of years I brought him every day. He loves it there - the staff is down to earth, friendly and work there for years and years. That says a lot about the management. Once when they opened the new facility, Banjo broke a toenail because a gate wasn't working right. There was no visable sign of it, but they told me anyway which shows integrity. I've not been happy with their grooming. Banjo is a beautiful Welsh Terrier. It's almost impossible to get a good breed cut-including at Paws In. Otherwise they're fantastic! read more

My pup has been coming to paws since she was vaccinated and old enough to board and the Paws team takes excellent care of her. She comes home happy and tired after playing all day and when we get onto 24th street she pulls the leash towards the shop because she can't wait to go inside. I've lived in NYC for over 10 years and I think it's important to support local businesses. There are a lot of places in the city where the experience is impersonal. I choose to go to Paws where I know the staff, the staff knows my puppy, and my puppy knows the staff! Happy campers. read more

After surgery i had no choice but to board my dog at Paws in. I was nervous as he had so many needs-- wearing a cone, taking medicine etc... The worst place I could imagine. I should be honest and start this by saying that I have taken my dog there several times because I had no other option. When I am home I have friends dog sit at my house but being in NYC for the summer I cant do this. The place is dirtier than you would think. There is ALWAYS urine and excrement where the 'boar'd the dogs. It is basically a prison cell for dogs in that it is about 7' x 7' crammed with about 10 dogs. There s nobody in there playing with them and they are always barking and staring at the door because it is so miserable for them. After boarding my dog there the latest and last time, I was told that he had been jabbed in the eye by another dogs nail but that he was fine. Well, all day long he has been messing with his eye and keeping it shut. Now I have to go to the vet tomorrow because they obviously did not take care of the problem earlier like they should have. Maybe if they did not cram so many dogs in this one room it would not have happened. Do yuorself a favor...or, rather, do your pet a favor and do not take them here!!! P.S. Stay away. Stay away. Stay away. My fiancé and I boarded our boxer at Paws for thanksgiving and returned to a horror show. In what is a filthy,dirty,urine filled environment, our dog was returned to us caked in dry urine and hacking so terribly we had to take him to the vet. $275.67 later our vet asked us what type of environment our animal had been living in to contract a case of kennel-cough so bad they considered admitting him to the pet equivalent of the icu. They(the vet) said our dog must have been in an unsanitary environment so out of control the infection mutated into a dangerous bortatella virus that had overcome his vaccination. I called Paws wanting my money back-I paid them to return my dog to me exactly as I dropped him off-not to get deathly Ill living in squalor. They left me a three minute long voicemail saying my dog got sick somewhere else and not under their care and refused to take any responsibility. Pay extra money and take your dog else where. The place is vile, filthy,gross and bush league. I guess that's what happens when hipsters are in charge of animals. read more

Boarding and Grooming is terrible. Let me start by saying I have taken my dog here several times to board over night only due to not having another option. Every time I pick up my dog he is so filthy I have to give him a bath immediately when I get home. I thought it was a result of any daycare but this is not true. I have since taken my dog elsewhere and the experience is night and day. Now for the horror story... the last time I had my dog groomed here his paw was cut so badly to the point where I noticed an alteration to his walk. After getting home I inspected his paw and noticed the fairly large cut. It was as if they had cut a slice of his paw off similar to if we took a pair of scissors and cut a slice of your fingertip off. I understand this could just be an accident considering many dogs out there resist in getting their nails trimmed, however when I had called them to question this they completely denied anything from their end and actually pointed the blame on me and essentially my dog. I told them the wound was fresh and that it affected my dog's walk. They were not helpful in anyway and got angry instead of being apologetic. In the end my dog's wound got infected and he had to go to the vet for medical treatment. To say the least I will NEVER take my dog nor recommend this place for anyone if they have any ounce of love for their dog. Apparently, I am not the only one in the neighborhood that is disappointed with Paws and would never take their business there. read more

I took my dog here based on the positive reviews on yelp. I was hesitant to leave her there after taking a tour and finding out that the dogs are kept indoors 24/7. My dog is not a little dog and is not used to pottying inside. I was reassured by the team that all the dogs go to the bathroom indoors and I wouldnt have an issue. Of course I picked her up 5 days later and sure enough she had a bladder infection. Cost me an add'l $250 at the vet on top of the boarding expense. Never again! The interior of the place is VERY small-not a lot of area for the dogs to run and play. I would highly recommend taking a tour before you decide this is the right place for your dog. And invest in the additional cost of relief walks unless your dog is used to going to the bathroom inside. read more

My dog came home again with a horrible sinus infection after being boarded at paws. Last week he had scratches all over his body and 3 of them very close to his eye. Im now sitting next to him as he is unable to breathe through his nose from the congestion, wondering why I didn't look a little further into this place before sending him there. Probably because he loved going to that place to be with the other dogs who sit there staring at the door waiting to get out. Im reporting them to the better business bureau and the health department tomorrow morning after I take my dog to the vet for the second time in less than 6months for respiratory problems because of Paws in Chelsea. This place is filthy, the staff make up excuses, the dogs are too many to a room because they are the cheapest in the neighborhood. Please. Please. Don't read this too late. Paws is not worth the heartache I have dealt with. Im seriously afraid for my dogs life and will not sleep tonight. read more

I cannot believe my Yorkie wasn't taken out for a walk for 6 days. I am so angry at this facility, how could they neglect my dog like this!!! I went on vacation thinking my dog was in a good environment where he would be walked, when I asked they said that they didn't walk him because I had to sign a "permission slip" so they could walk him, but they never mentioned it when I dropped him off! I will never leave my dog in a place where they don't care about the well being of animals, I will NEVER TRUST THEM AGAIN WITH MY DOG! Ever! read more

I have to say that I was underwhelmed by Paws in Chelsea. I brought my dogs there and was blown away by how dirty and rundown this place is. My dogs were put behind a door to wait while their groomer got ready. I saw through the glass that the room was dirty and it was filled with cages. My animals were walking around the room with no place to lie down. The actual boarding rooms for those of you who might be considering them for day care, are a bit of a nightmare as well. All the dogs were barking relentlessly. The stress level in there was really high. I find it ironic that a place that prides itself on its grooming would be as dirty as it was. My dog is like my child. I wouldn't trust him with just anyone. That's why I have been delighted by the experience we've received from Paws In Chelsea. The staff at Paws In Chelsea is tremendous. They treat me and my dog, Winston, with courtesy and care. They are accommodating of my schedule and my dog's specific needs. When we get to Paws In Chelsea, Winston gets excited to see his friends (both humans and dogs), and I know he's in great hands. When I pick him up after a short or long stay, he's happy, healthy, and dog tired from all the playing he's done while I was away. It's the perfect experience for us both. read more

My baby is 11 years old and has a heart condition, I was worried he was going to be too active with the other dogs but the staff at Paws in Chelsea where extremely accommodating in keeping him at the reception with the other older dogs and when I picked him up he was super calm and happy! I definitely will be using them again on my next trip! read more
