I have long been a viewer of PBS programs and just as long been a financial supporter of my PBS Station. I could go into great length of all the shows that were viewed in my household from Mister Roger's Neighborhood, and Sesame Street when my children were young. As the ages present in my household changed so did the viewing of programs. My husband has been a fan of This Old Housr and Ask This Old House. I have spent countless hours glued to the TV watching Antique Roadshow and NOVA. Of course we have also enjoyed a variety of Great Performances and even get a kick out of watching The Lawrence Welk Show remakes. PBS has programs for all ages. I recommend checking out the offerings by your PBS station and see if you too can find at least one show of interest to you. I grew up on PBS. Started with GA PBS in my hometown of Atlanta and then to KY PBS. As a child we would watch The Electric Company to learn words and enjoy the entertainment. I am sure PBS inspired my love of history as well. Some of my favorite shows are/were The History Detective, Finding Your Roots, Antique Roadshow, Are You Being Served and many more. My all time favorite shows are Keeping Up Appearances. That is one of the funniest shows of all time. I can watch that all day. Back in the early nineties in ATL remember watching Opera Singers Jessie Norman and Kathleen sing Negro Spirituals that was unforgettable. I bought the CD of this performance. This show will move your soul. Some of it is on You Tube. I highly recommend it. So no doubt PBS has been life changing for me and hope it stays around for future generations. read more

When I think of PBS, I think of "Mister Rodgers' Neighborhood! "Who didn't love that show when they were little children? It was both entertaining and full of "teachable moments!" Interesting that PBS broadcast the Watergate Committee proceedings on MacNeil Lehrer show, "gavel to gavel" in 1073. Growing up, my sweet Momma absolutely loved "Masterpiece Theater" and later in life she would not miss an episode of "Downton Abbey." "Austin City Limits" provided respectable musical content and "The Dick Cavett Show" is legendary. Alabama's affiliates are Alabama Public Television (APT) and (my hometown) Huntsville's affiliate public radio station, WLRH, on the University of Alabama Huntsville's campus. APT offers educational training, activities and workshops for everyone aged early childhood to adult including GED training, workplace essential skills training and career development resources. The show, "This Old House" is going strong on PBS and I occasionally use their website. Thanks PBS for providing cultural, educational entertainment for so many decades! read more

At the height of their popularity, National Lampoon magazine published a showstopping (and extremely controversial) cover of a man holding a revolver to a puppy's head extorting the typical newsstand skinflint to "Buy this magazine or we'll shoot the dog" or words to that effect. As the business end of a handgun can be highly motivational, this newsstand shocker was the largest selling issue in their history. Somehow that's the way I feel when the constant PBS beg-a-thons interrupt Crosby, Stills & Nash (or other classic rock dinosaurs) mid-song to beg for donations... "We'll extinguish your elderly heroes unless you pay up... $300+ for a DVD of the concert and their ubiquitous canvas tote. It's coercive philanthropy but it must work, because they keep on doing it. I give occasionally because I like the PBS NewsHour, most of the science programming and honestly, my collection of totes never leaves the closet. Maybe, if they had CSN threaten a dog... now that would be an encore. I am absolutely sure Neil Young would be up to it. Five stars. I don't mind opinions but when the reporter puts personal opinions into a news report, I change the channel and don't recommend the channel. This happened today on PBS news hour on Jan 28, 2026 when the reporter said that a politician was a liar. She didn't say "in her opinion" or "politician x has his or her opinions with which I disagree" but reports it as news, but it's not news, it's an opinion. read more

Just the greatest station ever... programs for everyone and an amazing organization! Been a member forever. I support this station and its affiliates 100%. Masterpiece Theatre is sublime. The travel shows are amazing. Every week I find more and more interesting programs...I probably watch more PBS shows than network shows. Of course I still love my Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV... But, always come back to Public Television! They depend on their viewers' support and we don't pay to watch... Update of sorts: Just watching Elton John and Bernie Taupin: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize, and what blew me away was Metallica performing their songs ... I subscribed to PBS passport. I'm now trying to sign in. When doing so I'm subjected to a beautiful picture that says this is not available. Signing in to PBS or passport or PBS Socal is such a hassle that after 15 minutes, I'm still not sure how to get past the "donate to watch" or "become a member" spiels. There are so many links to the questions of HOW DO I SIGN IN? HOW TO LOG IN? HOW TO ACCESS? that I know I'm not the only one who is being jerked around! Get it together PBS! read more

A few weeks ago, I wrote a review on my cable co., and how I tend to "channel surf," stopping only here and there with any regularity. For the most part, I regard cable as a lot of money spent for very little pay-off. However, I do have a history, however haphazard and spotty it may be, with PBS that extends back to my childhood. I remember being a kid, and being utterly fascinated with a series they did on silent movies (part of the fascination with old movies is that they "capture" the essence of people long dead, forever frozen in time, at least for the duration of the movie they're in). "Nosferatu" was the only silent film that really captured my youthful attention, and its remained one of my favorite films of all time (certainly Max Schreck's vampire is one of the creepiest in cinematic history, still to this day). As a teen, I had a brief fascination with comedian Lenny Bruce (I never found him funny...still don't...but his role as a groundbreaker, paving the way for comedians such as Carlin, Pryor and Bill Hicks, is undeniable; by the way, his Carnegie Hall "concert" from 1961 does have some laugh-out-loud material on it, and is probably where you'll be able to hear Bruce in top form) and PBS aired a documentary on him that I can still vividly remember decades after having watched it (the scene where Bruce, at the end of his psychic and mental rope, is interacting with Nat Hentoff, is indescribably sad). I discovered Monty Python through PBS. Before I had heard of them, I was flipping through the 13 channels then available, and flipped into the middle of their sketch where John Cleese is asking Graham Chapman about funeral arrangements for his deceased mother. I won't go into details of the "bit," but it left me open-mouthed in shocked dismay as I wondered, "Who are these guys?" I soon found out, thanks to PBS. I also religiously watched John Cleese's hilarious, brilliant series "Fawlty Towers," thanks...again...to PBS. I saw the Monterrey rock concert of 1967 on PBS (and fell in love with the musical alchemy of Jimi Hendrix). I saw "Gimme Shelter" on 1969's Rolling Stones Altamont concert on PBS. My late mother enjoyed "Ballykissangel" in her final years, and I have a grudging affection for it now (it's sort of an Irish "soap opera"). She also liked "Doc Martin," but I never really warmed up to that one. I liked "Prime Suspect" with Helen Mirren. Then again, I like virtually anything with Helen Mirren. Nowadays? I don't watch PBS with any regularity, but it tends to be one of the few channels that I'll linger over in my channel-surfing slog. Do I feel guilty that I've never contributed any money? Not really. I probably should (the only time I contributed money to anything was to a GoFund me page for a friend dying of cancer. I sometimes wonder if I had contributed more whether she would have lived, or lived longer...but I doubt it). I watch "Frontline." I will occasionally sit down for one of the movies being shown on PBS. Like my Yelp friend Michael N., I watch "PBS NewsHour." (I especially enjoy the commentary of "liberal" Jonathan Capehart and "conservative" David Brooks; as an aside, scathing cartoonist Ward Sutton once did a cartoon on a David Brooks-like conservative during the Bush years, said conservative saying, "Trust me. I am not one of those religious whackos who wants abortion outlawed and prayer in schools. Stem cells? Use 'em for research. Gays want to get married? Let 'em. Corporate polluters? Let's start cracking down on them! I love national parks. I love public schools. I love the French...The Iraq War? What a mess!...They'd never draft any son of mine! So why'd I vote for Bush? Because 4 more years would be to my advantage financially. That's it...See? I'm not such a bad guy after all!" Another long-winded, irrelevant aside?!? Sorry...I never learn...) I also am fascinated by the Henry Louis Gates Jr. show "Finding Your Roots." In my younger years, I wanted to be a celebrity for the money, women, adulation, etc. Now? In my old age, I wanna be a celebrity so Gates will feature me and my history on his show (maybe he would do 2 shows; one on my adoptive family and one on my genetic family; there's actually a re-printed book I purchased on Amazon that traced the lineage of my genetic maternal great-grandfather to Boscawen, New Hampshire in 1734, and my paternal great uncle became one of the leading psychiatrists in Nevada, but...sorry, I wander off topic again...). I guess if I heard PBS was really failing financially, I'd feel compelled to contribute something from my extremely limited "discretionary income" cache. After all, it is one of the last bastions of genuine culture and relatively reliable news programs still existing in our country. But if it did fail, in spite of my piddling contribution, I'd always wonder....wonder whether if I had contributed more money...just a little bit more...maybe PBS would have survived, or survived longer... Not to be confused with PMS. PBS is a great service, although it has to be said that every station should be like PBS and should be providing the public with a service, rather than just trying to make profit and sell commercial spots. Nevertheless thank goodness they exist, and long may they continue. We love some of their wildlife shows a little too much, even though they can be harrowing AF. In a supposed free country like America, PBS should be everything... instead of an afterthought. read more

The PBS station here in los angeles plays cooking shows all day on Saturdays. It's really your only choice when you get five channels and two of them are in Spanish. Since it's PBS, the video is all grainy and everyone's wardrobe looks like leftovers from the set of Family Ties; you can't tell if you're watching a 10-year-old rerun of Barbecue University or a new episode of Simply Ming. Anyway, one Saturday, one of the cooks said that the secret to good cooking was empathy. It makes sense--we prepare food for others to make them happy. We're offering them a physical manifestation of our love and asking them to validate our effort by returning that affection. So what does it mean when my friend microwaves flavored soy flour and offers me the flaccid, rubbery fake meat, saying, "Taste it, it's great, it's just as good as the land animals you eat but I don't"? I guess it means she has no empathy. Also, it means my apartment is going to smell like a wet dog for about 40 minutes. read more

I grew up watching American Masters, Nature, and Nova. I liked the accents in Antiques Roadshow UK. I'm just not the audience for American Ballroom Challenge, so I don't recognize the channel when that's on. I've got the blog for Art 21 bookmarked though. Echhh, not happy with some of the programming. I used to love watching Rick Steves until, after MANY years, he never covered Germany. Don't believe me? Check your listings. He's more than happy to go to the Middle East and ALL over Europe, but won't set foot in Germany. Really, now??? What's the problem, Rick??? I think I know. It seems the only time a really good show is on, is when they're soliciting for funds. Then, the show is always interrupted by begging and more begging. It becomes a half-hour informercial, with hosts interrupting the show saying the same thing, over and over. Thank goodness for Youtube. read more
