I requested a quote through Yelp and my request was sent to multiple auto shops. I had ruled out the upstream O2 sensor, catalytic converter (both new), MAP sensor, and fuel injectors. I explained all of this to Matt before bringing the car in. He assured me they could perform deeper diagnostics with their equipment. After dropping off the car, Matt called and told me they had "confirmed" exactly what I had already told them, and that the next step would be pulling spark plugs--for an additional fee. At that point, I decided to go elsewhere. What I don't understand is why I was still charged the full $85 diagnostic fee, plus a $4 hazardous materials fee and $3 shop supply fee. Plugging a car into a diagnostic scanner does not generate any hazardous waste--no fluids are drained, no chemicals are used, and no parts are replaced. There's nothing about a basic scan that would justify a hazardous materials charge. That kind of fee typically applies when disposing of things like oil, coolant, or other regulated waste, none of which occurred here. In the end, I paid $92, wasted time and gas, and learned nothing new. The most concerning part was Matt admitting he didn't even know spark plugs would need to be checked as part of further diagnosis.

After diagnosing it, we were all pretty shocked to find out that what the Toyota dealership said needed to be repaired had actually been misdiagnosed. Jay was able to figure out what was really going on simply by plugging into the car and properly reading the diagnostics. We were honestly appalled that the Toyota dealership hadn't caught it in the first place. So instead of spending $7,500 at the dealership and most likely STILL not fixing the actual problem, Auto Technik was able to properly diagnose and fix my Sequoia for around $1,500. Aside from saving me a ton of money, everyone here was just so nice and communicative with me throughout the entire process.
