We've been rebuilding our house over the last three years doing most of the work ourselves - as I'm very particular about getting everything right. I can do just about everything from framing to electrical to paint/trim, but NOT drywall -- you need to have talent and be a real artist for that - and this is where Jim and his team come in. Jim and his crew just finished removing the acoustic ceiling (or "popcorn") from a property we have purchased. Aside from being available on such a short notice, we also got quoted on a very great price (comparing to 2 other companies). Jim was very responsive to any questions I had throughout the process. He never asked me to go and test my ceiling for asbestos (which another company did) But took all the appropriate reproductions incase the house did contain it. We hired Pena Drywall to do a pretty difficult popcorn removal/paint job on our new home. When he came over for the estimate Jim was really upfront of the level of complexity that the job entailed due to the popcorn being painted over several times. Jim is not man of his word so don't trust what he says. He talks a good game of doing great work and promising a speedy finish but doesn't want to commit to a date on contract. I canceled a contract with another drywall vendor because Jim said that he can finish at least 3 days earlier but when it came to contract he put the same due date as my original drywall vendor. Now I have to see if I can use my old drywall vendor. Complete waste of time and possibility of money. read more

My husband has been delaying putting up crown molding in our kitchen for close to two years because the ceiling was such a disaster. It sloped one way and then the other, and the prospect of fixing it on our own was daunting. I called five drywall companies. The first told me the only way to fix the problem was to remove the drywall and shave the joists. The next told me on the phone that the crown had to go up first, and then he would put in the mud to meet the crown. Two others came and looked and said the same thing. Danny said, "I can float this out for you." Now, when four contractors tell you a thing isn't possible, and one tell you it is, you start to wonder about the one. I texted Danny and asked if he would prefer to have the crown up. He said no, for all the reasons we thought--until the ceiling is fixed we won't have anything to attach it to, and keeping the crown clean (it's stained) from mud, texture, and ceiling paint would be hard. So, we went with Danny, crossing our fingers and hoping he improved it just enough that we could deal with the rest of it ourselves. He did it! That ceiling is as close to level as possible without having the crown up, and he's willing to come out and float out small areas that are left if we need him to. He came twice to level, and once to texture. My husband, who is an engineering perfectionist, is stoked and is no longer dreading the job of putting up the crown. He says it will be 1000 times easier. Hire Danny. Super nice guy, super competent, and while I'm sure it would have been EASIER to have the crown up before the ceiling was leveled, the end product is so much better this way. read more

Jim was Exceptional !! He completed the work according to schedule and was detailed when reviewing the job. There were things that he picked up on that I missed when reviewing the scope of work. His crew removed the acoustic ceilings, floated all my walls with a level 5 finish, and did some minor drywall repair. Once completed, they came back to touch up areas after the priming was completed which showed minor imperfections. Due to the settling of the mud, there were four cracks that appeared and were promptly fixed. Pena Drywall is about the customer and wants to make them happy. I had to demo an entire kitchen to the studs in Gilroy. The kitchen was connected to the dining area through a continuous flow of drywall. Pena's group came in routed, placed, and taped the drywall in a day. I had to have a permit inspection and passed on the first try. Pena's group then came back to texture the wall and match the texture to the dining area. They did a great job floating to make the new kitchen drywall flow into the existing dining. Seams are hidden and texture looks great. Perfect fitting around the existing electrical outlets, vents, and canned lights. We had a small job patching our kitchen ceiling after the electrical work and I had trouble getting a reasonable bid because it was a small job. I spoke to Jim Pena on the phone and although they were really booked out, he said he'd try to help me over the weekend. He wasn't able to make it over the weekend, but communicated w/ me the whole time and on Tuesday he sent his son Jimmy. Jimmy was quiet, extremely professional, and did a fantastic job on our ceiling!! He spent time thoroughly cleaning up afterwards, and left me with specific instructions on what to do afterwards with the painting that I wanted to do myself. I was surprised at the quality of the work given it was such a small job, and contractors often do not pay a lot of attention to detail on small jobs. I called Jim Peña and his team last month to see if they could scrape off the ugly popcorn ceiling of the condo I've lived in for 17 years, and they absolutely went above and beyond. Besides being extremely accommodating, he listened to me and made suggestions that had me literally telling people that every time I spoke to him my life got better: I mentioned how noisy my upstairs neighbors were and he referred me to a guy (Justin Gallego, also amazing) who could spray sound dampening insulation into my ceiling which he did and the results are life changing. Then when he said they'd have to paint my kitchen ceiling even though there wasn't popcorn in order for their to be continuity I asked if they could take down the ugly light box that was there and not only could they he had a great electrician (Lucas Casias, fantastic) who put in new lighting in the kitchen, moved a fixture in the dining room, and wired a new fixture in my living room which has needed to be done for ages. The ceilings themselves are now beautiful - crisp clean white, perfect texture, they make the place seem so much bigger, I love them. And the cherry on top was the cleaning service he has come in after (don't have their name but they were wonderful) - there is no way to not get popcorn everywhere so he has a team come in and clean up after, the place looked amazing.
