My 8 year old had learned about pearl harbor in school and wanted to visit it. We tried signing up for the free boat ride USS Arizona Memorial the day or two before,.. but it filled up immediately. There is like two parking lots. The main one get's full. There is one literally to the right of it. I'm not sure why it's not connected.. but maybe because it's for the submarine museum next door. Anyways,.. we ended parking to the right (free parking). I didn't like the bag policy. As some have mentioned, parents with baby's.. its abit of an annoyance to have to check in your bag or backpack at the bag checkin center. Luckily my wife had a clear bag. But what's surprising is the approved purse size. My wife's purse was literally just a few inches too long and we were asked to check in her purse. Entrance is free. There were about 2-3 exhibit rooms. You can view them pretty quickly or you can take your time as they have some audio recording you can listen to. There was an outdoor video, but we passed on this. You can walk around the center and take pictures and that takes about 30 min. We finished the visitor center in about 1.5-2hours. It was interesting, but I'm not a huge history guy. read more

Had such a wonderful time here. If you're looking for a free visit, you can definitely do a lot. I failed to reserve anything but loved the walk to remmeber and the two inside museums. Very historic and they do a great job of telling the history. Probably because of COVID the movie didn't play. I stood in standby for about an hour and then was let onto the ship to see the USS Arizona memorial. Very somber and I like how the rangers educate that this isn't a place to be gregarious but reverent. Love this place and feeling the strength of America! read more

I wish we had more time to explore the area but all we got to do was the memorial. It seemed like there were various museums, other memorials, even short movies that documented all things related to the Pearl Harbor Attack. If you haven't been before, then you should definitely check it out at least once. There's a lot of emphasis that what you're visiting is a memorial so there's an expectation for proper dress attire, demeanor, etc. when visiting. At the memorial, once you're dropped off, the time it takes for the next ferry to arrive is about the time it takes to walk through the whole thing. There were some park rangers stationed that would answer questions and right before the next ferry came, one of them gave a moving narrative of the history of the memorial. There's a $1 reservation and they run out of spots pretty often. We visited on a Friday and our time slot was completely full. Would I do it again? Probably not since it doesn't change but would recommend for first timers. read more

But honestly I appreciated that you did not have to do the video before taking the boat to the memorial since I previously viewed it. The memorial is beautifully done and a must see if in Oahu. Typical visitor's center with helpful staff. One thing you must know is that bags can't come in. They have a staffed bag check, which charges a fee until an hour before close. Then bag check is free. It's really a good plan to book your tour online through the NPS because only a very limited number of tickets are available at walk-up. Also, as of late March 2019, the Arizona memorial is still closed for tours while the Navy repairs structural problems. Trust me. It's still inspiring to see it from boat or land. read more

We did an 11am ferry to USS Arizona (arrive by 10)am, Deluxe Audio Tour for the grounds, lunch from the hot dog vendors, and then shuttled over to the Aviation Museum until closing at 5pm. 2- Get the Deluxe Audio Tour voiced by Jamie Lee Curtis. 3- Pack a lunch, get to the convenience market early for a sandwich (bc they are sold out by noon), or make piece with eating at the hot dog stand. read more

Visiting Pearl Harbor was one of the top things to do on my Hawaii Trip. We went on a Friday, not thinking it would be too crowded. We arrived a little before 1 in the afternoon. By the time we got there, tickets for USS Arizona, which is free, were sold out. The staff informed us that they offer 1300 tickets daily, and they are on a first come, first served basis. The Visitor Center offers a passport deal to all the attractions for $72/adult and $35/children (4-12). You can also pay by attraction or choose one of the package deals offered. We decided to go with the USS Missouri Battleship and USS Bowfin Submarine. For the battleship, you have to ride the shuttle, which is really a charter bus to get there. It closes earlier than the other attractions at 4pm, and the last bus leaves at 3pm. The buses seem to run every 10-15 min. When you get there, you have the option of exploring the ship yourself or a 30-35 min casual tour with a guide, which is included in your admission. We opted for the tour guide. Our guide, John, a Navy retiree, gave us a very informative tour and answered all of our questions. We caught the shuttle back to the visitor center to check out the USS Bowfin, where you have the option to use the audio tour. Both attractions were awesome to see. I would not suggest them for anyone that has a serious disability, especially on the submarine since there is a lot of climbing through small spaces. It was a great visit. We spent close to 4 hours exploring the two attractions alone. Definitely an enjoyable adventure for the entire family; lots of history to be learned! read more

First a Happy Birthday shout out to the Navy 243 years old on Oct 13. If you are a Navy veteran and visiting this week take advantage of the complimentary admission to the U.S.S. Bowfin. ($15 per adult). We were using the time before our scheduled viewing in the museum theater before heading to the U.S.S. Arizona and wanted to tour the submarine. The nice people working ticket sales proactively asked if I was active duty or had served. Since I had served in the Navy, admission was free for me and my guest as part of the USN birthday week. What a pleasant surprise. Note that the U.S.S. Bowfin tour is not included in the cost of the Arizona memorial, but is worth the visit if you are here. They do a great job here in supporting the large number of visitors and it never feels overwhelming due to crowds, tour times are spaced out and there are plenty of historical items to see that will keep you engaged with historical information and remembrance for the brave men and women who lost their lives for our freedom. A great experience at a major historical location that will never be forgotten. Highly recommend a visit here if in the area or planning a visit. read more

We went in the USS Bowfin submarine for $8 per person, and it was our first time walking through the inside of a submarine, experiencing the lives of sailors living inside, which is not an easy life. The inside of the submarine is well maintained. There are the bunk beds, toilets, showers, and kitchen. But no windows, completely enclosed. It is very claustrophobic. The dock area is narrow and long. This is a nice experience to do at the Pearl Harbor. Also, the tickets are donations to charitable organizations. read more

Alright if you want to come and see the USS Arizona the tickets are free but they only give a limited amount of tickets per day for walk ins, I believe something like 1,300. You can also reserve tickets online which this number is not included in the count but they do charge a non refundable $1 and said it is good up to 60 days. This ticket you will be getting has a time on it, show up like 10-15 mins early to watch a film of actual footage from Dec 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor once it's over open the doors to the left to board a boat that will take you on a ride to the USS Arizona memorial. The visitors center has a couple of small museums that are also free for you to explore. If you want to see the USS Bowfin and the Missouri those are extra. Not sure exactly how much. Since we did a tour, ours was covered in the whole bundle. You are not allowed to take purses, if you do they charge $5 for a locker. You are allowed those small what are they called clutches yea those lol. This was an experience for sure that I will never forget. read more

When I first visited Pearl Harbor, it was pretty simple stuff. Park the car. Walk in and get a ticket with a stamped time for theater viewing and boat ride to the Arizona. Museum, rest rooms, and gift store to the right. Theater to the left. Now, twenty years later. If you don't get here when they open, allow ample time to visit. Their parking lot is more organized, but about half the size since adding the pick up/drop off and bus areas. Make sure to pre-order your tickets online for the film showing and Arizona ride. If you have valuables that you don't want to leave in the car, check in at the bag storage area to the right of the entrance. Walk through the security machines and proceed to the ticket windows with your confirmation # to get your tickets. Proceed to the waiting area for the theater and wait for your appointed time. After the boat ride to the Arizona, we returned to the center and used the restrooms. On the side, I noticed a short line and wondered why. The sign stated one of the survivors of the bombing was signing autographs for interested visitors. Warning: For seniors, please be prepared for traveling a distance in getting from your ride to experience this historical landmark. The film is updated and sheds more light on the events leading up to and the actual event. Definitely a must visit for first time or repeat travelers to Oahu. read more

Amazing site and the history of it is sobering... However... we traveled all the way from Arizona to see the memorial... the web site instructed you to reserve you boat passes to the Arizona 24 hours in advance. We tried that many times with no success. Upon arriving, there was a 2.5 hour stand by line.. the ranger said people get their passes 6 weeks in advance! Wish we would have known that.. It costs $35 per person to see the Missouri! This is a national memorial... it should be free, and they need to get everyone out to see the Arizona! Needless to say, we traveled all this way from Arizona and did not get to see it.. very disappointed. The "museums" were little rooms with a couple of photos and a couple of models of ships. The movie "theater" was a large TV under an outdoor porch... People should be allowed to roam the base and airfield and see the bullet holes in the buildings and see the ships and experience all the history! There are some food options inside and you take a shuttle around to see all of the areas. You don't need to pay to do those since you can just view it from ashore. FYI, if you're a tourist, you can just take the bus. It's very cheap and only like 30min ride here. This is a must see if you have any time on Oahu. The obvious historical significance should be more than enough reason, but the exhibits and tours available make it very unique. I first visited the Arizona memorial more than 40 years ago. They've made significant improvements in every aspect of the experience and more are in process. For younger kids it is probably not going to be something they enjoy, but for middle to high school kids with an interest in US history or WWII it will be worth almost a full day. The views are spectacular, and it is relatively easy to put yourself back in time, to immerse yourself in the moments that changed lives almost 60 years ago. We arrived about 15 minutes before the memorial opened and the line was already huge. I'm note sure when you need to arrive to be at the front of the line. Once the line started moving it moved very quickly. You get a ticket and check in for a time to go out to the Arizona Memorial. While you wait there are a variety of exhibits to walk through, and like I said you could spend the day at the site. There is lots of free parking, but remember where you park and don't lock your keys in your car. We tried to help two groups that locked their keys in their car on our way back to ours. Dress for the weather. You are going to be outside for the boat ride out to the Memorial, the Memorial is essentially open to the elements, and many of the exhibits are also open/outdoors. Every time I come to Hawaii I feel compelled to pay my respects to Pearl Harbor. Its quiet for the most part. A place to really sit and reflect on what happened. I always love going through the museums, reading, watching the reels, learning about what happened. The movie you watch before going to the USS Arizona is always riveting and really puts things into perspective. For as long as Ive been coming to the island Im always happy to see this place is always busy. We will never forget. I brought my husband for the first time and it really moved him. He was so humbled to be able to experience this. Don't bring your bags in. They aren't allowed. Pop your phone and credit cards in your pockets. No big deal. Go straight in and try to get a ticket for the USS Arizona. You will usually have to wait an hour or two before you can go on. This hasn't changed. A must do if you are visiting Honolulu. There is tons of information to look at and explore at Pearl Harbor. Plus it is all for free. Everyday, the visitor center offers around 1300 free tickets to visit the USS Arizona Memorial out on the water. When my family around around noon, we were expecting all the tickets to be gone for the day, but were surprised when we were able to snag five tickets for a tour a few hours later. The tour consists of a short documentary and then a boat ride out to the USS Arizona Memorial. Unfortunately, the memorial has been closed for quite some time due to construction so no one is able to view the memorial. You are only able to see it as the boat passes by. Even without being able to walk on to the memorial, both the documentary and the memorial were very informative. If you are not able to get tickets for the tour, you are still able to explore and walk around the center. There are lots of things to read and look at that doesn't involve the tour. I would allow at least 2 hours to take it all in. When visiting, be prepared to not have any large purses with you. Only bags that are clutch size or smaller are allowed. They offer lockers for $5/bag/day if needed. After visiting Pearl Harbor, I now have a better understanding of that day and the sacrifices that our soldiers made for our country. It is defiantly worth at least a half day visit on your trip to Hawaii. read more

This review is purely on my experience before getting into the museum. Museum itself is great. Just want to post warnings for others before arriving there. If you planning to go there, don't bring any bag including purse that is bigger than size of a long wallet. If you do, they will charge you $5 per bag to store it. Don't leave anything in the car, because there are 3-4 cars that were robbed when I parked, they warned me to not leave anything in the cars as they are reporting to the police. This is the first place I ever been to in Hawaii with a unfriendly security in the front that act like a jerk. I guess it is his job to ruin people's experience before getting in. read more

Great museum and visitor center. Horrible park ranger. My group and I were dropped off by our driver in the parking lot right in front. No where are there signs to direct app drivers. This park ranger comes up to us, telling us it's unacceptable to get dropped off and that we need to be picked up "over there" as he points in a general vicinity. Well I look and see the sign, visitor drop off where he's pointing and think oh that makes sense, it's a little outlet. Got it! Not. After we were done with our visitation, we set for our driver to pick us up in that spot which we made note of. While we're waiting, my friend sad the ranger watching us the entire time and when it came to our driver arriving to get us at the visitor drop off center, that's when he decides to approach us. He then goes straight to our driver and tells him how he can't pick us up here and how he's already told us before hand. We tried to intervene and say this is where you said to get picked up. The park ranger, on a ego trip now, literally says "congrats you just gave your driver a ticket." Not professional at all. We all get in the car stunned at what is happening and how outraged this man is who refuses to even listen to anyone. Looking over at the sign I realize there was a miscommunication of exactly where the drop off is. The drop off for taxis, ubers, Lyft is this broken up parking lot past the visitor drop off, pass the bus stop, all the way in this corner. May I remind you there is no direction or signs for drivers to know this and when the ranger was pointing all of that was in the same direction so you see why I saw the ONLY sign visitor drop off as the correct place? When the ranger was talking to the driver, my crew is entirely under the impression that he is giving him a ticket, so I step out of the car to try and say how there was a misunderstanding/communication and what i got was cut off by a hand held in my direction with "I'm not talking to you" Pearl Harbor visitor center, you better address this. He had no right to be this outraged and disrespectful towards visitors if there is no signs indicating where drivers should go. Put up a piece of cardboard with a arrow, anything is better than having a person who isn't even military stake out to get off on telling everyone he's going to ticket them when no one even knows where to go, it's quite pathetic really. read more

Yay I'm their 400th review! A great, historical spot that warrants a visit. You really just need a couple hours to learn some of the smaller but interesting details that the schools or education system don't teach you. A fair warning however, the place did give me some chills down my spine, whether it was walking around the exhibits, reading the names who are forever serving the battleships that were sunk or lost, to even the other side of the story in the Japanese's perspective. Best of all? It's completely free! Nothing better than learning more about one of the most pivotal moments in history and taking it all in person on-site of where it all happened. Best to leave all your belongings (bags, purses or backpacks) inside your rental car if you have one as they are not allowed inside - they do have a bag check-in if you don't have a car. Also, I highly recommend coming on a weekday if you can to avoid the busy crowds, especially if it's peak vacation and tourism time! read more

Enlightening and sobering, our visit to Pearl Harbor was my favorite Hawaii trip activity. Even though the ramp on the USS Arizona Memorial has still not been fixed (so visitors can not actually set foot on it), the US Coast Guard takes visitors close to the sunken ship and around the harbor. I was in tears nearly the entire time, from the documentary film to the harbor tour to the walk through the visitor center and grounds. Very powerful and moving to reflect on such loss and sacrifice, along with the realities of war. Please visit and pay your respects if you visit Oahu. Tip: Reserve tickets beforehand, even though you need to create an account on the federal government's recreation.gov site before doing so. Also, wear clothes with pockets for the essentials (wallet, phone, keys) because you are not allowed to bring a purse or backpack in (you will need to check your bags at $5/bag before entering, so please budget enough time to do so if you have a reservation). read more

Definitely a nice place to visit to learn more about their history. Back in 2015, you were able to visit some of their attractions for free but now everything requires a ticket for entrance. You can pick certain tours to visit or visit all of them and get a day pass. It's a really cool place to visit and read stories, letters and see some of the physical items from back in the day. Having read all of the history behind the Pearl Harbor attack, I placed my visit to the Pearl Harbor visitor center, at the top of my to-do's while in Oahu and a truly touching and memorable experience it was to have been there! I purchased tickets for the "Passport to Pearl Harbor" which included: - Audio tour of the USS Arizona Memorial - Entrance to the Battleship Missouri w/audio tour (i got to do this the same day, will post my review for this too)* - Entrance to the USS Bowfin Submarine w/audio tour, located near the main Arizona Memorial exhibits, just follow the signs and/or as one of the guides to direct you (also go to do this on the same day and will also post my review for this as well) - Entrance and self guided tour to the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island where you will be able to visit the two airplane hangars (37 and 79), i will also be posting a separate review for this as well* *There is a shuttle that makes stops at the Arizona Memorial, Battleship Missouri as well as the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island, it runs all day and it is great! Tickets for the "Passport to Pearl Harbor" are only $65, VERY well worth it! You can purchase tickets to each of the attractions separately and maybe come back and check out all of the above separately on different days, i chose to do these all on one day! The key is to arrive at the visitor's center as early as possible if you intend to do all of these on one day! The center opens up at 7 a.m. We got there promptly at 8 a.m. There is parking available at no extra charge, you are not allowed to bring any carry on bags of any kind and do not leave any of your personal belongings in your car as this is a high theft area, you are allowed to check-in all of your personal belongings at a kiosk located on the right hand side of the main entrance, so make sure you check your belongings in, (there is a small fee to do so, you are handed a ticket, keep it safe as you will need it to claim your belongings at the end of your day here) before heading into the main entrance, you will be told to do so anyway at the main gate. Once we were inside, we checked in and our tickets were printed out (i had previously purchased them directly from the Center's website) at that point you will be given clear instructions on how to go about your way and what to do next! So first things first! Get your time-stamped ticket for the ferry that will take you to the Arizona Memorial! We wound up getting a time stamp for 9:15, in the meantime we were given headsets for the guided audio tour of all of the exhibits that are available within the main complex of the visitor's center. We went on did just that! Very interesting audio narratives by Jamie Lee Curtis! Before you know it, it was 9 a.m. and we made our way onto the ferry boarding area, where you first watch a film about the Pearl Harbor attack, narrated by "Stockard Channing" aka "Grease's Rizzo". The film was great too (even though i knew all of this already) i really did appreciate it! You are then asked to board the ferry which takes you over to the actual USS Arizona Memorial! The memorial sits right above the USS Arizona, the actual monument where you stand in however does not in anyway sit or rests right on the ship itself out of respect! One of the guides pointed out that oil, from the USS Arizona, still tends to leak out onto the surface of the water, i can confirm that as i did see it happen for myself! The entire USS Arizona Memorial experience took about 2 hours (NOT including the other attractions i listed) It was a truly touching and unique experience, i got emotional at times i must admit! We got lucky that day as we were told that there was a documentary being filmed on the memorial and that one of the youngest survivors of the tragedy was going to be present here (Donald Stratton) and guess what? He arrived on the ferry right after ours! WOW! According to one of the guides at the memorial, Mr. Stratton is 94 years old now, which means he would have been about 19 years old during the attacks! It was truly an honor to have visited this memorial! I had read and learned all about the history behind the Pearl Harbor calamity throughout my tenure in school, it is quite incredible to have actually have been able to visit this site, now as an adult and it is something i will carry in my heart for the rest of my life! read more

There is so much to see here now! I read up on reviews and was prepared to not bring anything in but water and what fit in our pockets. I also brought cash just in case we wanted snacks at the cash-only snack spot. I missed the window to Pre-book U.S.S. Arizona tickets 2 months out so I woke up at 6:45am the day before I wanted to go to book tickets right at 7am when next-day tickets open up (make sure to log into your recreation.gov account before 7am too). I was able to book 6 tickets for the Arizona and avoid lining up at 6:30am the day-of. Once we arrived, we got our U.S.S. Arizona tickets and realized they even if I missed out on getting those tickets, there is plenty of other things to see and experience, with a fee. We ended up deciding to pay to get into the Bowfin submarine and the Bowfin museum too. There are probably 5 or 6 different spots for you to hit if you have he time. All the little spots, museums, torpedos, etc placed around the visitor center gives everyone a good variety of things to experience and learn from. This is definitely a great place to go to learn about American history and to go pay your respects. read more

Good idea! **TIP: If you were like us and waited last minute, like, a couple days before getting your ticket, go online. Instead of showing up early to get your tickets, go online to reserve the time you want. There's a catch though. I believe it's a 24-hour window to book your tickets at the time you want (and they go fast!). Security is pretty tight before you enter. You must check in your belongings to the right side, passed the bathrooms, because they won't allow anything but water bottles, a hat and/or a camera. NO bags. NO purses. First, you'll watch the short movie showing what this place is about. After, you'll be taken on a small ferry to the USS Arizona memorial. Spend as much time over there as you want. Every one needs to visit and learn about history and remember sacrifices of people who devoted for this country. One thing that I am disappointed is hard to get a ticket which the government is providing as free.. read more

I love the ships and the history they hold! I Iove what they represent and what they teach us and the many generations that have come after World War II. So why the 3-star rating? The center's facilities were relatively modern but some of the folks who work there seemed bitter and jaded. The park ranger who provided the brief prior to entering the USS Arizona theater was rude. A lady tactfully inquired him if the riding lawn mower could be paused. He responded with something similar to, "I was in the Air Force so I can raise my voice. He has a job to do just as I have a job to do." Seriously, I don't know why asking the mower guy to pause for a couple of minutes isn't already a common practice in this organization. His little speech took no longer than a few minutes. Another is that they didn't tell people that once you enter the movie theater to watch the short WW II history lesson that there would be no opportunity to use the restroom. Be sure to go before you enter the theater. The next issue is the boat we took to visit the Arizona had a broken recording of the tour. For this reason, we were relegated to having to listen to a sailor provide us with some inaccurate accounts regarding a 14 y/o Japanese Kamikaze pilot and the date it occurred. Please DO visit the Pearl Harbor Center to travel into the past and learn about the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation and our service members. See the living accommodations first had yourself and imagine living and fighting in those conditions. Just don't have high hopes for the customer service some of the staff may provide during your time there. read more

So much history here! I did not take a single picture, I just listened to the stories and walked around paying my respects. There is nothing wrong with taking pictures I just wanted to be as respectful as possible. The area is nice and I ended going with my whole family I could not take my eyes off the documentary they show before they take you over to the uss arizona. This is is by far one of the most humbling things that I have ever done. If yo do go there is a lot to learn:) read more

First of all, Pearl Harbor is a great name to a place you can visit. Obviously with all the violent war history here, you have to pay your respects and appreciate not just what's in front of you, but what was there before and the souls who are no longer here. I've had the privilege to visit this place multiple times throughout my life, before and during my time as a servicemember. Do yourself a quick favor and read this first paragraph from Wikipedia: "The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service upon the United States (a neutral country at the time) against the naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. The attack led to the United States' formal entry into World War II the next day." I think the highlight of the trip is getting on the boat and going to the USS Arizona so if you can, come as early as possible and get early tickets so that you're not waiting around in the hot sun all day for your turn. That said, it gets real burning hot here so dress appropriately and apply that SPF! read more

Pearl Harbor!! The one attack that is in most history books and we learned about in school. Well, I finally got a chance to visit that very location that was attacked. Ohhh myy gosh, it was so cool to finally get to see and step foot on the very island that I once read about in my history book. It was such an honor to pay respect to the men that lost their lives in this attack as well as served in our United States Navy. I'm not usually a big history fan but this memorial had my full attention. If you are a history geek then this is a place for you. You will really enjoy all of the history that the memorials were created for. I'm really glad that I got to see this memorial and experience Pearl Harbor! read more
