My child has been with Dr. Hirai since she was about 4 years old. I found out about them having a the worst experience with the pediatric dentist that was with the Aiea Family Dental care. They only had one pediatric dentist at the time which made it difficult to get an appointment even when I informed them that my child was in so much pain. When I first found out about Dr. Hirai, my insurance wouldn't allow me to seek outside care since he wasn't part of the Aiea Family Dental. Mrs. Hirai helped us by not only accepting us as new clients but also gave us discount since I was willing to pay out of pocket to treat my child. Today, we loved hearing that we can stay with Dr. Hirai while my child is a student :) Dr. Allen Hirai has the experience, knowledge and a friendly personality that makes my child happy. That's what matters to me! He knows how to make my child happy, calm and learn about healthy habits. The staffs ate all super nice and friendly too! My kids have been seeing Dr. Hirai from day one. In the last 11 years we have been taking our kids for their dental work here, bi annual cleanings and even the harder procedures- all of which we have t gotten any complaints from our babies. Also, it's nice to be greeted by name and treated with kindness and care. Doesn't matter who helped us here, the care was consistent. We had a great experience at Kahala Dental with Dr. Audrey. They took us in on a short notice and assisted my child with an urgent need, even though we were a patient of a different office. Dr. Audrey's presence was warm and reassuring and she really took her time to help my child. He is usually very nervous at the dentist but felt calm at this office. My kid went here for awhile. Each time we went there was another cavity. We brush and floss daily. I asked for a prescription for fluoride and that was reluctantly given. Considering that cavity work that was being done, I found it surprising that fluoride was not recommended. We went to another dentist and since then no cavities at all. We've been to the new dentist 4 times. I've waited to offer a review to have a comparison of sorts. Our new dentist, also, readily offered fluoride and openly reviewed x-rays. read more

I took my 5 year old son to his routine checkup here. They told him he needed 6 filings which would've been a very uncomfortable and painful process for a young child. As this sounded very suspicious I took him to a different practice for a one off checkup and they said his teeth were in great condition. No fillings needed at all. This is a Super arrogant dentist. I've worked in dental field for 10 years with a hand full of doctors, to know 1. Don't you dare oppose to this doctor's recommendation or he'll start giving you the guilt trip and talking like he can predict the future. Dr. Allen had recommended to extract my son's baby teeth because the adults teeth are coming in. I opt to wait for it to fall out naturally. That I will give my son's baby teeth, a small tug/wiggle everyday when brushing, to help it come out instead. He then stated " it won't work and that I'm actually TOURURING my son if I'm tugging at it with no anesthetic.." sorry to disappoint you doc.. but my son is definitely not crying in PAIN, as he would be in your dental chair. I explain to the Dr. Allen that prefer my son to be a little older for any extractions to prevent causing a traumatic experience for my 7 yrs old. He than had the audacity to mention how I "choose to crowned a lot of my son's teeth and that never in his 39 years has he had a patient like my son.." Mind you, we have our reasons and don't have to answer to you.. He finished by saying "Tugging on your son's teeth will not work and YOU'LL COME BACK TO ME, with this issue later and it'll be hard to fix.." I than stated "That is what an OTHO appointment is for" He than criticized "Do you know how much Otho is? $8,500. Quest insurance isn't going to pay for that." and I'm just in disbelief...Just because we currently have Quest, he assumes I can't afford/get my son's OTHO treatment? I didn't choose to tell him that I worked in a dental field and that , just to see how he acts towards his everyday patients and my gut was right. Understand this... even if my son did the extractions, it's not a guarantee that my son won't need OTHO TX in the future.. BOTTOM LINE. All kinds of red flags during this 1 conversation. Instead of explaining the pro and cons of the situation, or even giving a simple metaphor explaining my son's extractions recommendation, I was given the an arrogant, guilt trip of a response. Dr. Allen really needs to learn how to better explain the situation without getting offended with the questions being asked. For 39 years you've been doing this and this is how he acts? There are GREAT dentists out there that will take the time to explain these logics of their diagnose and will talk to you with compassion and respect your decisions. Sadly, this isn't the place. 1 star for the friendly front staff because they were really patience and pleasant in directing me to their location. My sons have been seeing Dr. Hirai for a couple of years now and have no fears seeing him or his staff. Matter a fact they enjoy going to the dentist, because they get to pick a treasure/toy of course. Although I was a little hesitant at first, after knowing that we don't get to accompany our boys in the room during their cleanings and procedures, I eventually overcame being hesitant since both boys have always came out feeling good about their visit. It would've been a 5 star for me if we didnt have to wait more than 15minutes after our scheduled appointment times, which happened to have occurred several times. Overall, the staff is very friendly and Dr. Hirai seems to be doing a great job with our boys. read more

I took my 8 and 7 year old here for the first time today. My 8 year has a big fear of Dentist (X-rays and the big light mostly) so I was very apprehensive about her going into a appointment alone, but that apprehension was put to ease from the first encounter we had at the front desk. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the 2 ladies in the front, they are so welcoming and inviting that even my kids relaxed and weren't nervous. Then they got called back and not one peep from either child, after the X-rays they had their cleanings and still no crying (that's unheard of for my kids lol). After their cleanings I got called back for the exam portion, "Uncle Allen" explained EVERYTHING TO ME. Problem areas, molars, teeth crowding, proper flossing (to get the tight back teeth), it was one of the most informative and detailed exams I've been too. I am 100% confident in having my children work with this AMAZING STAFF! Kids are still happy and can't wait to go back to the "Uncle Dentist" lol. 10 out of 10 for this office! Also big plus to all the Covid safety measures, clear directions explained before the appointment and when you arrive. They make everything easy and streamlined the registration process making it a breeze! So happy to have found a safe,honest, and reputable Pediatric Dentist for my children!!! read more

I have been taking my children to Dr. Hirai for a few years now and have nothing but good experiences. He is a very kind and awesome dentist, his assistants and (most of) the staff are wonderful and make my kids feel so comfortable. I was so happy with this practice, until now. After her most recent checkup appointment, my oldest was scheduled for another appointment later the same week to administer a sealant on her teeth. Unfortunately, the night before her appointment, she started to feel sick. Sore throat, headache, congested. I was concerned because earlier that day, she was sent home with a COVID exposure letter from school. Several of her classmates were home sick with COVID. The next morning, she really wasn't feeling well and I kept her home from school. I called the office as soon as they opened on Friday morning and spoke to a woman named Christina. I explained that I needed to reschedule this appointment because my daughter wasn't feeling well and had been exposed to classmates with COVID. Christina immediately reprimanded me for not giving enough notice to cancel. How could I have possibly given more notice? I explained to her that my daughter wasn't feeling well, and she insisted that I bring her in anyway. She told me that it was too late notice for the dentist office to fill that time slot. Like that was her biggest concern? Losing money? She told me to just come in anyway, and that "kids get the sniffles all of the time" in a very condescending tone. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She then tells me that everyone in the office is protected from COVID and that I should just bring my sick child in anyway. I told her I wasn't comfortable with that and she put me on hold. She comes back and still requests I bring my daughter in. And that if I cancel, there will be a penalty. I asked her, "So you want me to bring my child, who is likely sick with COVID-19 into your office, is that what you're telling me?" She said again how everyone in the office is vaccinated and wears masks, that they're protected from the virus and that little kids get sick all of the time. Ok.. but what about consideration for the other patients? What about those who are immunocompromised? Either way, I should never have had to defend myself to this person. It was very unprofessional. She put me on hold one last time and came back and told me that she would "allow" me to cancel this time, and that is my only "warning". The next time would cost me $100. Let's be honest, I dragged out my service with Pediatric Dentistry Kahala for as long as I could. I'm sure lots of people thought I was waiting for my kid as I sat in that waiting room, but I didn't want to leave! I never understood why people hated the dentist when I had these guys. Uncle Allen and his team are so fantastic at what they do, and they're truly great people. Shout-out to Aunty Lei especially for always making me feel at home and remembering details I mentioned 6 months previous. Uncle Allen - you were always there with a smile and you made me feel at ease. They always strove to make me feel absolutely comfortable for each visit, and they coached me through every new dental issue over the years - from flossing and proper brushing to more intensive oral health concerns. I first met Dr. Hirai when my youngest child age 7, needed some dental work done for his cavity. My son had been to the dentist many times prior, but one particular visit was especially difficult. During the visit he would not stop crying so the dentist was unable to complete a cavity repair. We were then referred next door to a pediatric dentist, Dr. Allen Hirai. I did not have a chance to research who this dentist was and his experience. With the recent negative media publicity of inappropriate practices, I was a bit anxious and scared. However, I was completely taken back when I met him and saw this new environment. Dr. Hirai and his staff instantly made me and my son feel at ease. His calming demeanor, professionalism and compassion, helped to calm down my son and was able to complete the work that was needed. I transferred my other two children to Dr. Hirai soon after. They all enjoy going to the dentist now. They are comfortable getting dropped off and picked up after their appointment. Dr. Allen Hirai and his staff always doing an amazing job every time my kids get seen. They always make them feel comfortable and they are always so caring . I've been with them since 2015 and been satisfied every time . To me finding a great dentist is very important for me as a mother so when I heard about Dr. Allen Hirai office I checked it out and loved it. Although It takes me about 30 mins to drive to the office because I live on the other end it's so worth the drive especially for my kids. My son, who never had cavities, suddenly had 6 cavities according to Dr. Hirai. Both the Dr. and the front desk staff confirmed that there were 6 cavities when looking at the x-rays. Well, as a concerned parent, I got my son looked at by my dentist of 30+ years, and he assured me his teeth looked great, NO cavities. 6 months later, I took my son for his next cleaning and exam at a new dentist...Still NO cavities. I cringe to think about how many unnecessary fillings my daughter must have had done prior to my getting a second opinion for my son. Do your children a favor, when in doubt, get a second opinion. read more

Wasn't exactly thrilled with him or his staff growing up. He recommended that I didn't need braces and it would be a waste of time. Going here was absolutely torture. My parents listened to him instead of me, I claimed I was in severe pain, but because of Dr. Hirai's recommendations they wouldn't let me get braces... They finally gave in, every orthodontist I talked with recommended I should get braces (i talked with five orthodontist), and I should pull out teeth. After I notified his receptionist I will not be seeing him, and I would be seeing another dentist, his staff keeps on calling me when will I be coming in...Seriously, I'm not coming back. read more
