In a country where the ubiquitous kale salad is AWOL, I was thrilled to find a version with parmesan, broccoli and an egg (croutons were neither mentioned on the menu nor necessary; they should be removed, or at least listed). I had been dreaming of such a salad, the kind that's challenging to avoid in San Francisco, so I was delighted to discover a very strong iteration of it. Unfortunately, the sweet potato side didn't live up to the salad's level, and both had prices that felt steep given their simple ingredients. That leads me to the opinion that these dishes would be better suited to a more casual environment. The restaurant is beautiful, but if the prices and atmosphere were relaxed, it'd be difficult not to get this kale every day. Naturally, it's silly that I suggest the restaurant do a complete overhaul, but I wish I could have this salad at a price that reflects its production cost. That way, I'd be back repeatedly, even within the same trip to Paris. And as a reminder, remove the croutons. Parmesan doesn't need any help making a salad shine.

The hits of this meal were the oysters, onion soup, duck confit, and mont blanc dessert. The oysters are super fresh, slightly sea water tasting, but overall delicious. You can see them chucking the oysters in the front of the store. The onion soup had the iconic cheese top, with a great cheese pull. The onions were very caramelized, and the broth was a good balance of slightly sweet and very savory. The duck confit was super tender and had a delicious lightly sweet sauce drizzled on top -- almost reminiscent of char siu glaze. Definitely my favorite item of the night. They bring out a glass case of desserts you can pick from and explain each one, which is nice. Loved the richness of the chestnut cream on the mont blanc, and the cream inside was super light and airy. And not to mention, none of it was super sweet, which is great! The misses of this meal (not necessarily bad, just probably wouldn't get again) were the bread, fish, and suffren (unfortunately ironic considering the name of the restaurant). The complimentary bread was stale and really hard to chew. But hey it's complimentary, so won't complain too much. The fish was firm and not tender - I think it may have been overcooked. The sauce was too salty for our liking. Again, not bad, but just wouldn't get again. The suffren was a huge portion, so I'll give them that. There's plenty of variety, including various sausages, ham hock, and sauerkraut. One of the sausages was quite dry and mushy, and way too salty, while the other one was chewy, snappy, and delicious. The ham hock was on the saltier end as well, but tender and fell of the bone, so snaps to that. The sauerkraut wasn't that crunchy and was instead a bit mushy. Definitely some hits and some misses within this particular dish. Once again, thankful to all the staff working for being super kind and friendly on Christmas Eve!

I didn't ask a whole lot of Huguette at lunchtime and, since I didn't focus on fresh seafood I possibly didn't get the best of their offerings. Drinks, French Onion Soup, and Fish & Chips were all that I sampled in this casual bistro and though perfectly fine, this meal was easily forgettable if not for the huge, apron-clad polar bear out front welcoming guests to Huguette. Nothing about my experience here would dissuade me from returning for more drinks and - because it appears a specialty - some fresh oysters. On the flip side though, nothing I sampled would cause me to run right back. From what I tried, it was difficult to understand why my guide had recommended Huguette at all. Good enough, but I do imagine there's better meals to be enjoyed in the area.
