The coffee is okay. I got the same thing I drink everywhere iced Carmel white mocha, not much coffee flavor and not much cwm flavor either. However, the attitude in this place makes me think these employees hate their job. Which could be true. Not one of the three employees greeted anyone walking in the door, the man who took our order just stared at us for a good two minutes then said what do you want, the woman with red hair and facial piercings(which were pretty dope) who made my coffee made the gals in line behind me coffee first, then turned around and set mine on the counter with about the facial expression of she's in pain and hates life let alone happy she has a job. Attitudes really make a business, if their business stance is we're miserable here and you'll get no "hey thanks for choosing peerless and supporting our business" then I'd recommend advertising that so people know they'll be treated by the employees that the business could give a shit less if they had customers or not. read more

I've seen the name "Peerless Coffee Co" for a long time on the side of trucks, at donuts places, at stores. I've always waned to go to the actual coffee bar of Peerless Coffee. Living on the other side of the Bay have been making harder for me to visit for a long time! I finally visited today, and I loved it. Even if it weren't my favorite coffee and peanut place around (to say nothing of the neat stuff to buy) I would go there because of that attitude. Their coffee blows the doors off Starbucks and all those other chains in the area. This place has it feel of a mom-and-pop ran store but with a lot more options and exotic Beans to choose from. The coffee here taste much richer and more extravagant. Definitely not the watered-down garbage like some of these other places that charge ridiculous prices for average coffee. One of the employees also mentioned they actually offer tours here for their history and coffee machines, for all those coffee buffs. I might have to come back and check that out next time when I have more time. They have a nice little front patio area to enjoy your coffee or if you prefer they have indoor seating too. This is great coffee with allot of different types to choose from. They especially excel in dark roast coffees with better flavor than most other coffee companies in the area that are considered "better" because they're newer or gained notoriety in San Francisco. If you like French or Italian roasts I recommend checking this place out. read more

I have never been here but the people who work here must be incredible - 2 days ago my friends car was broken into in San Jose and my backpack with my laptop, homework, planner, wallet, airpods, you name it was stolen. 2 days later, I received a package from Peerless with my homework, planner, and schoolbooks, with a note saying that they found these things in their parking lot. LIFESAVERS. Thank you so so much for doing this! Good karma is coming your way. as a legitimate addict to that black and oily juice they call coffee, there is none better at brewing it than Peerless Coffee Co. starbucks, peets, blue bottle, philz, and all the others do not compare to Peerless...only reason why most people dont know about Peerless is because they dont necessarily have a store front, and they are not on every street corner in every city, in every state, in every country in the world... everyday they put out 3 different flavors for you to enjoy...usually one medium roast and one dark roast, along with one "flavored" coffee and some type of decaf as well...their "store front" is actually at their plant/office so you know that everything they make there is fresh...along with selling random things like coffee gizmos and snacks of all sorts, they do serve up espresso based drinks as well... just try it. just come by....make your way out to Jack London Square...you will not regret your decision. i swear! read more

I may have caught these folks on an off day... or, maybe not The reason I visited the store was because I was looking for a Toddy cold brew system. I have a really sensitive stomach and Toddy's make very low acid coffee. I almost bought one online but then I thought, no, I should support a local business instead. Peerless was the only store in the area listed as a retailer. So I called before I drove over to see if they had any in stock. The nice woman on the phone said they were in stock, they cost $30 (comparable to most online retailers) and I would get a free pound of coffee with my purchase. Sweet! So I drove down there, excited to discover a local coffee roaster- I thought, if I liked the coffee maybe I'd start buying my beans there too. When I arrived in the shop, I liked the homey ambiance, and they had all kinds of cute tea pots and cups and things in the retail area. I didn't see the Toddy on the floor, so I waited in line to speak to a sales person. And this is where stuff went wonky... I asked where the Toddy coffee makers were, and the sales girl said they were out. I said, no, I don't think you are, I just talked to someone on the phone 15 minutes ago and you had 10 in stock. So she went back to check, and confirmed that yes, they had some, but they had to find them. (?) So I puttered around on the floor while I waited a good 10 minutes for them to find the coffee pot. Meanwhile, customers were complaining because they were out of coffee. There were maybe 5 people working at the time, and very few customers, so they were not short staffed. Another gal came out with the coffee pot and rang it up... I asked for my free pound of coffee, and she said I didn't get one. I said someone on the phone just told me I would, so she quickly turned to another person on the floor, asked them about it, they said no, so thus I got no free coffee beans. And little sympathy from the sale associate. Sad. Then, my total came to $42... It turned out the coffee pot was $37, not $30 like the woman on the phone had said it was. Really? I could have bought this thing online for $27 plus shipping and not had to go through this hassle. I kept my cool, bought the thing anyway, and ordered a cup of coffee. By this time they *still* didn't have coffee ready. The only thing available out there was flavored coffee, which myself and the other man who had been standing there waiting for ages did not want to drink (really, who serves nasty flavored coffee besides a truck stop??) Another sales person came over and offered us Americanos, which we accepted. She seemed a little irritated with us, which wasn't cool, because we were being mighty cheery and patient. The Americano was decent, though tasted like bitter French roast, which is not a favorite of mine (I'm a Peets snob, what can I say.) I also didn't notice any fair trade coffees on their menu board, which was disappointing too. (I could have missed it.) I was sad I didn't like my experience at Peerless better, and I probably won't be back. So much for supporting a local business. However, I'm really excited to use my new Toddy and make coffee at home with my usual beans from Peets. read more

Despite Peerless' best efforts to create a welcoming retail space, this place is never going to be a hip coffee bar. If you want to watch a dude with a Salvador Dali mustache take five minutes to make you a pour-over drip coffee, then Blue Bottle's down the street. What Peerless does have going for it is excellent beans that are blended and roasted on premises. An outstanding blend from this place will make for a better coffee experience than the single origin beans sold down the street, and you'll pay about half as much for the privilege. read more

Peerless sounds a lot like Alfred Peet's one store I used to go to in the late '60s on Vine and Walnut in Berkeley. Now, Peet's served in grocery store bakery departments tastes like shit. Alfred must be spinning in his grave. It reminds me of the stupid kid on the San Francisco Embarcadero at Fisherman's Wharf who threw out the original sourdough starter batch losing the original sourdough bread taste, smell, and aroma forever. I come here almost every day and my late is always perfect - never a burnt taste. I am really into coffee and so I am really picky about where I get it from. The ladies who work here are incredibly friendly and helpful. It is a really nice local coffee location who has a great candy selection. They have the best dark chocolate caramels that all of my friends are now addicted to. The candies are sinful. read more

I purchased and tried my first Peerless Coffee. I used l cup of water and 2 T coffee. It was tasteless. So i started over with l cup of water and 3 T coffee. Same. The one i bought was Kona Decaf or Hawaii decap (can't remember name). A waste of money. read more

I bought a pound of Peerless Vanilla Cream Nut beans and ground them in the store (Food Source Discount Foods, Mission Blvd/Hayward). At home I brewed a pot and OH MY WORD!! I was shocked at how delicious this cup of coffee tasted. Rich, smooth, full of flavor, and no acid taste. Reminded me of the first time I tasted a good cup of Kona. I'm hooked. why did it take me so long to discover this place? it's been around for 80+ years but has kept such a low profile that it's only just gotten onto my radar. it's been about 2 months since i started frequenting this place and it is divine! they have SO many different roasts to choose from, it's ri-donk-ulous (65+ at last count! so far, i've sampled the moka java ethiopian blend, 80th anniversary blend, president's private blend, sumatra mandheling, and hawaiian golden kona blend. i get 1/4-lb beans of each new roast to test it out. i've discovered that i like a light or medium roast, and don't much care for a dark roast. so far my favorites are the moka java ethiopian, president's private, and hawaiian golden kona blends. all have a smooth, non-acidic, non-bitter taste. the wonderful employees are beyond helpful and patient with me as i stumble and stammer through each visit. they'll gladly grind your beans for you and actually take the time to inquire how you'll be preparing your coffee (in a regular bottom-filter machine, pour-over, drip, or cold-pressed system) so they know how finely to grind the beans. this is truly a place without any pretensions and snobbery! i love the comfortable atmosphere and welcoming vibe. the fact that there is off-street parking in a private lot is an added bonus. read more

When I lived in Oakland I always bought my beans at Peerless. I recently went back & had a cup of their Nitro Cold Brew coffee. Super smooth, strong & no bitterness. It was fantastic. They have a coffee museum which was fascinating. They've been in the business for 92 years & their collection is amazing. You should call ahead if you want to check out the museum. read more

I was up from LA in Oakland to see the new grand baby and stole some time for a trip to Peerless for coffee, having passed it on many occasions. This shop is open weekdays and Saturdays so I stopped in to get some little house gifts and caffeine. The rich roast coffee is awesome! I bought some little doo dads for my coffee and tea -holics in the family. There are candies based on coffee beans, tea and coffee sets and cups, new holiday blend coffee beans (they will grind for you) and pastries. I like being able to stop in a shop that is so festive even when it is not a holiday. They are full of little locally produced candies and greeting cards, which I like for I don't do malls and shopping for the gifts on my list was easy. My son who hosted me will get a bag of holiday blend and I got him some dark chocolate covered expresso beans. I know I know the attention should be paid to the baby, but having lived in Oakland for several years and having to leave for my company, I will stop here (convenient to the 580 and 880 exits) before coming to smooch my grandson. Oh yes I did buy one of those awesome burlap Peerless bags to hold my purchases for it is gorgeous, has great handles and holds so much for grocery shopping. ps I do agree that the staff need to be quicker on the uptake. Staff are very welcoming but a little too calm. A couple found an adorable little tea set and the cashier had several others in line as she carefully dusted and inspected each piece, then requisite: are you on our mailing list? Do you want to be on our mailing list? A shop can lose customers for the speed issue... Thankful I had some time but it would really make this place hop if they trained staff to be efficient and quick. Cheers! read more

I live in Jack London Square, and Peerless serves the best tasting coffee for miles around... Although their espresso drinks are far more flavorful than a popular chain which shall remain nameless, they are also cheaper. Plus, store policy is not to tip the baristas. I was reading the review by Nadia B. from last week and I think that it is amusing that she immediately decided that the Peerless managers are racist. They are not racist, they treat everyone that way. They are just rude. I have had a love/hate relationship with this store for years. The help changes OFTEN and it seems that the managers they hire are ALWAYS rude. However, there is always at least one employee that is so nice and knows how to make my drink to perfection so I keep coming back. Sure I "boycott" from time to time but I have just come to realize that I like the coffee, it is close to my job, and I can look past the rude managers because they seem to rarely be in the store. My only complaint is that they are very very slow, so if you are in a hurry - do not stop in. Go in when you have time to wait because the coffee is actually really great. read more

I often visit Peerless when I'm in the area. Depending on what time a day you go there can be a long line, which is normally in the mornings. They need to have more then one barista working when there's a line out the door. The coffee is hands down one of the best coffees I've had. However, the manager/ barista's aren't too friendly. There is one barista that is very friendly and is very helpful when I come in to the store. I think her name is Sharon. I'll update my review when I find out her name. I'm sadden to see the other experiences customers have had. read more
