Wanted to try new coffee places in Oakland since I'll be here every weekday now. I ordered the cardamom cappuccino and I don't know if I'm the only one that doesn't like getting their tongue burned for hot drinks, but as I took my first sip.. I burnt my tongue right away. I feel like, at least for coffee there should be a certain temperature for you to actually sip on your coffee so you can enjoy the taste. This is a great place to grab tea, coffee or pastries...especially for those that were addicted to Starbucks which disappeared months ago. It's a small spot with great employees and tasty drinks. They also support federal employees & others during these strange times in America. This is by all means a safe space for many so to speak. The staff is super friendly & have great conversation. Been meaning to write this a while ago. I was downtown for a work training and needed a drink to go with my bagel. I happened across this while walking in the direction of the Starbucks. They had alittle easel that said Masala Tea. I turned about and when into their store. Aplus is they are a small business, I believe women owned. I then saw they had Kashimiri masala tea. So had to order that, with my almond milk substitute. Wow! the flavor was so good. There was just that hint of rose that sets it apart from the regular Indian masala. The staff is friendly and awesome. You can tell they love their business. I also love all the different types of coffee pots they have through the eras on their shelves. Unfortunately I start work at the time they open and get off work at the time they close. But great spot and highly recommend checking them out and supporting. read more

The coffee itself is great. But I go to the self service cream station and the half and half is empty. To be polite I bring the empty pot to the counter and tell the person they're out. The person refills it then, as I'm sitting at the table tells me it's ready ands stares at me to come get it and take it back to the station. There's no one in line, three people standing behind the counter but they're aching like it's part of the customers job to keep the station stocked. That's fine but i should share the tip I just gave you for doing part of your job for you. Small things like that speak volumes. I've given them the last dollar I ever will and won't go back. But the coffee is great. read more

I'm on the fence about this place. The coffee is good. The service is interesting. I order and they don't take your name. They call out the drink order which is a fine system for a place that isn't busy/crowded. When two people have the exact order that becomes an inconvenience. Sometimes they don't even call it out and just set it on the side counter. This does deter me from coming back especially since Awaken is not too far and I've never had this issue there. It's very cute inside though. I just wish they had a better system. read more

I do wish that they had names on the orders; some guy in a suit grabbed one of my lattes and left me his latte with milk (yuck). I decided to try Modern Coffee today right before they closed at 1pm, and I'm so happy I did! Jessie (sp?) immediately greeted me and seemed excited to hear it was my first time coming in. I asked for their recommendation, which was the Black Strap Iced Coffee. I also ordered a croissant. The coffee and croissant were great, and the service was exceptional! I am no coffee snob. Although I have repeated this to many that the best coffee is the one that wakes you up without giving you a heart attack. That distinction goes to an unobtrusive place on Avenida Santa Fe in the Recoleta Barrio in Buenos Aires. Let's just say after a 16 hour plane flight, I had a cup of coffee there at 2pm and didn't go to sleep until 6:30am the following morning. Where was I? Oh yes no I am not a coffee snob but every once in awhile, I'll pay a premium price on a cup of joe and in Oakland this place more or less attached to Oakland's Tribune Tower is where I go. I love this place because of one drink and I apologize in advance if I spelt it wrong: the Cortado. It's nothing special but for whatever reason, once every fortnight or so, I think about it. I'm not even sure why. It is a paradox that pacifies and stymies me simultaneously! I'm strictly a drink-it-black-the-tarrier-the-better kind of a coffee drinker and the Cortado is on par with say, a cappuccino or latte. It's rather mild by my standards but then I have a sort of constant craving for it especially on special occasions when I actually go out for lunch with an old friend or colleague and wanna grab a post lunch coffee. This is where I go. Be warned, 1:30pm is too late. Get there by 12:45-ish or that craving will be imprisoned within the stem cells of your imagination. Service here is reliable and they take their coffee making seriously here. No gimmicks like blue bottle coffee which tastes like Folgers to me. Just focused barista spells which they have entranced my tastebuds with. I think I know why I come here. I lost my "using Apple Pay with my Apple Watch" virginity here. And like a salmon that returns upstream from when it first spawned...there I find myself wailing in the air flapping my tail as if placed into charm of nature's belly. This place is right near my work! I always go for the matcha, it's literally the best and the chocolate croissant is sooooo delicious! I wish they can warm it up. But overall the service is speedy and the people who work there are always so nice & friendly and make everything so perfect! read more

Modern Coffee is the place to go if you work in the area. They are fast, much faster than the Starbucks across the way, and I love their coffee. I've heard wondrous things about their banana bread and can personally vouch for their Burnt Cinnamon Latte, either cold or iced. It has a nice coffee flavor throughout, isn't too sweet, but very milky. It is their fall drink. For their spring/summer drink, its the Lavender Latte! Still bitter with the taste of coffee and lavender. Its light and heavy at the same time. The Lavender gives it a sense of lightness/freshness, while the coffee has a heavy base. You first taste the heaviness, then the lightness. Really friendly baristas and quick service! read more

The space is small but the coffee and the service are just as wonderful as Modern Coffee's other locations! Four or so tables inside with a few outside as well. Sleek, modern vibe makes the small space still feel spacious. Can definitely sit in and drink your coffee but seems a bit more geared to grab and head back to one of the million offices nearby (state and federal buildings, city hall, etc.). Lavender latte cost me $4.50, so pretty standard pricing, but dang that was a good latte. Enjoyed it alongside one of the delicious cookies they have for sale. Pastry offerings weren't particularly diverse but were very good. All in all, very happy to have another modern coffee location! I think they make some of the best coffee in the area and they're always friendly and cheerful making it. read more

I normally look forward to their seasonal lavender match and I try to only get it when I really want to treat myself at $6 a pop. That said, I was extremely disappointed on my latest visit. It was probably the worst matcha I've ever had. I even think they forgot to add the lavender. It was very weak and watered down with no hint of lavender or matcha flavor whatsoever. I'm not a picky person so I was surprised as to how much I didn't like it. If I hadn't already gone back to work, I would've asked them to remake it. Lesson learned to always taste before you leave. 2 stars because it could've been better and normally isn't that bad. read more

With Paris Baguette being closed for like a year now, Modern Coffee is the closest coffee spot to me, and is one of 3 solely coffee spots, plus 3 cafes offering coffee, in City Center. While I do love Roma, and openly disdain Starbucks, Modern is quick, casual, and has a great selection of breakfast pastries. Located on Clay, this is easy to pass by if you don't head that way. You walk in to a single room coffee shop, order at the counter and you can have a seat or just stand as you wait. The coffee shop ambiance is not really there, but the staff is fun to talk to and overhear. I generally get a red eye - a drip coffee with a shot of espresso in it - And a Kouign-amann. Love me a caramelized pastry. So if you want a fast, good cup of coffee, can highly recommend this spot. But if looking for a coffeeshop work vibe, you can do better. read more

This is a really cool little coffee and snack joint. The environment is small enough to be personal and cozy, without the feel of the big corporate giants. It is well lit and uncluttered inside. The staff feel like they want to succeed and want you, the customer, to be happy. The mocha I had was very good. Pricing is between average and maybe a tad high, but I have to imagine with the cost of that storefront monthly, the prices are probably in line with ensuring they survive. So happy to see Modern Coffee open up on this side of Broadway! I had a large vanilla latte and a butter croissant. Vanilla latte (large) - $5.00 - Pricey but very smooth and delicious (and had the wonderful latte art). Butter croissant - $3.25 - Butter croissant was alright. Easy payment using Square. There are a few tables for indoor seating. I didn't check for outlets or wifi (but I may update this later next time I visit, which could very likely be next week, ha) but environment is great for a small meet up with a client or friend. I saw one table and two stools for outdoor seating right on the sidewalk, but kind of an awkward spot on Clay on the sidewalk. Otherwise, good experience and will return. Cute alternative to the super busy Starbucks next door but lots of coffee competition in the area so hope it will stick around! Overall, no complaints, average rating of 3 stars for a decent but pricey little spot in downtown Oakland. read more

Giving the folks at modern coffee 4 stars though truth be told I'm not quite sure they deserve it... or i guess, maybe the coffee doesn't. The customer service was stellar. I strolled in on a Wednesday at 4:34. The time is important because unbeknownst to me, they had technically been closed for 4 minutes. The cashier took my order without bitching-- an iced vanilla latte with oat milk-- then asked the barista AFTER if the machine had already been cleaned (which was when I realized they were closed and immediately began apologizing). The cashier was so sweet and assured me that it was totally fine. The barista made my drink for me anyway. It took a tad longer than it "should have" but I assume it's because he had just put everything away and had to pull it all back out again for little ol' me. How could I possibly be upset?! The vibe was cool, but not unlike other "hip" "modern" coffee shops and eateries in the area. You know the drill: white, black, and a pop of color...in this case it was yellow. It's pretty small so probably not the best place to meet up with a bunch of friends, but its a chill little spot to sip coffee and people watch on a lunch break. The ratio of the latte seemed off to me. Very heavy on the oat milk. I could barely taste the flavor of the espresso, but I will say that the potency of the espresso was just how I like it! I slowly sipped on 1/3 of it, and that was enough to fuel a page or two of writing. Anyway, long story short: the customer service is incredibly welcoming, the vibe is cute and cool albeit uninspired...and the coffee? Well. let's just say it wasn't my cup of joe. read more

Modern Coffee is my new weekly go-to spot! My usual: Almond milk mocha. I worked in San Francisco for 7 years and definitely turned into a total coffee snob. Yes, I admit it. I was used to getting my weekly dose of delicious amazing coffee from Sightglass (shout out to Sightglass!). Since switching jobs and now working in Oakland, I was on a quest to find a Sightglass-equivalent on this side of the Bay. Modern Coffee is totally on point! The almond milk mocha is SUPER good! Not too sweet. They use some kind of semisweet chocolate, which is perfect! Many of the larger chain coffee joints make their mochas super sweet (Starbucks), which is equivalent to drinking a cup of diabetes. Anyway, the almond milk mocha at Modern Coffee is the perfect blend of strong (yay!) and sweet from the chocolate and almond milk. I'm not sure how it tastes with the regular milk. I have lactose issues so I'm not trying to go down that road. Verdict: Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. A must try! read more
