Nestled in an old warehouse neighborhood, lies a small coffee retail/shop. The shop actually lies in a small corner of their large distribution facility where they may even roast. The shop itself is very small and quaint, almost country-like versus city-like. Parking is super tight but don't let that deter ya, just park somewhere on the block and make a relaxing jaunt of it. Outdoor seating ideal. I've been sipping Peerless coffee long before a Starbucks even entered the Bay Area, though exclusively at restaurants/donut shops. I learned early that if a place took their coffee serious then Peerless may have been part of the equation. They do many styles of roast, so there is something for everybody. The European Royale is an extremely bold yet incredibly smooth blend. It is my go-to. Recently just tried an iced coffee here and it was one of the best I've had, right up there with Peets. It was smooth yet with backbone. No acrid coffee aftertaste as I believe they may cold brew it, so the acids and oils don't interfere. I really, really like this place! Once a week i have some extra time to just chill in the morning. Peerless Coffee is my spot of choice. I arrive around six and there's no wait to order. There's usually nobody in their outside patio area (their only seating) so I get some alone time with a primo city view on a street that's just waking up. Their coffee is delicious and their baked goods (last I checked, from Raison D'etre A Bakery) are on par with their coffee. The staff is cheery (but not annoyingly) and knowledgeable, and very helpful. The inside is clean and pleasant, and there's an assortment of other food and related items to peruse and purchase. Prices are also very reasonable. I counted fifteen parking spaces in their lot. I haven't purchased any of their coffee beans, but I will as soon as I run out if I can remember. My only qualm is that I wish they had a location closer to home so I could come here more often. read more

As a native Oaklander, I feel like it is both an obligation and a privilege to patronize another native Oaklander like Peerless Coffee. I really enjoy the homey feel and all of the colorful knick knacks displayed for sale. With Valentine's Day around the corner, I am currently welcomed by pink and red hearts and Snoopy mugs every morning. I get coffee and cheeful colors chasing my morning fog away. I used to drive down here to buy their beans, but I recently started a job just a couple of blocks away and so now I walk over every morning for a little coffee break. Initially, I was going to Blue Bottle every day. But that was adding inches to my waistline (that's what happens when you chug whole milk cappucinos) and making a dent in my wallet. Nowadays, I have the Peerless travel mug and it only costs me only $1 to fill it with their regular ready made coffee each time. Sure, it can be a little slow sometimes, but at least I already have my coffee in my hand and can sip it as I wait. These people are always nice and friendly and I really appreciate that. The coffee is very good. the shop is cozy and warm and has goodies all over the place. If you want they will keep track of your orders which is very helpful. This is my GO TO coffee shop for the best coffee I have ever had. I treat myself to their weekly specials around 3 or 4 times per week, and every week it's a new surprise! From a mocha with almond roca to a white mocha with strawberry... They're all amazing. HOWEVER, nothing brings me back to this coffee shop like the STAFF. The ladies working at Peerless are absolutely the sweetest, most considerate, friendly and patient people. They know my name and my orders, too! Claudia, Jihad, Dorothy and Naomi make me come back to Peerless devotedly. I work in the mental health field and I am often drained from work, and somehow I always manage to have a smile put on my face when I am greeted and served by any of those four ladies. I became hooked on Peerless brand coffee years ago after having it at a restaurant. Last year a friend of mine bought some Ethiopia Moka and I couldn't stop drinking it. I just recently found out about this little Peerless coffee and tea store in Oakland. This place sales coffee and tea from all over the world. The lady that helped me when I went in to buy a coffee drink was very nice and answered my questions. They have three different coffees a day that you can sample. So far my favorites are the Ethiopia Moka and the Kona blend. The only thing that I didn't like is that the store is small and has too many things in it which makes getting around in the store difficult. read more

If you live in the neighborhood, give these guys a shot because imho, this is the best coffee in the neighborhood -- Blue bottle is way too expensive, Bicycle coffee tastes terrible, and Starbucks is Starbucks. Coffee: I love the cold brew and oat milk latte here. Can't beat the size for the price either! I have gotten some beans here and they did not disappoint. I also love walking home in the evening on Oak and smelling their roasted coffee. Service: 90% of the time the staff are so friendly. It was so off that I wonder if they put the Jamaican Blue Mountain label on the wrong beans. Great place to buy your coffee beans, drinks and coffee/tea tools and gadgets. They have a huge selection of beans and you can ask for a tasting cup for the brewed coffee they have out to sample. You can buy the beans whole or ground. The flavored beans are so fragrant and irresistible! My fave is the Cinnamon Frangelico! It is convenient that they have a parking lot. And all the times that I have been here, there's always several law enforcement patrons, so appreciate that they support Peerless too. And it is pleasant opportunity to tip off my hat to say "thank you" for their service. Explore this place! If you brew your own coffee, I recommend to get the beans here, as they are freshly roasted here! Maybe buy 2-3 different varieties to try. Once you run out, try another few until you find your fave! I ordered the two varieties of Ethiopian coffees. Mystic lion and Moka Fancy. Both had a burnt, over-roasted taste to them and nothing like the Ethiopian coffee beans I drink. Awful tasting coffee. Even shared with a couple of friends and both said it was bad. I did call peerless to report and they did offer inspect the ordering maybe refund if i would ship it back to them. But i decided to not to pay to ship it back after paying once to ship it already. read more

Went there because someone said they have great coffee. I am an espresso lover and a good espresso is hard to find but Peerless gets a 5 out of 5 from me. Its used to be excellent. Their blended white Mocha used to be perfect..way way more better than Starbucks'. But that was like 3 or 4 years ago. Recently, the quality of their blended white mocha has gone down significantly. I cant really taste what Im drinking right now other than ice, just a tad bit of the coffee favor. I so miss the old recipe. The texture was so thick, so strong, so sweet. The white mocha they have right now is so Bland... so bland.... boring... when they make 2 orders at the same time in a blender, its even worse. So disappointed ! In the meantime, I'm going to observe the carnival from Peerless, a proper, well-run, longstanding local family-owned coffee company that's been at this craft for decades (88 years!). Outstanding bean selection for endless hours of finding favorites, and I'd put their roasted-on-site blends up against any number of fancy single-source beans out there. Every morning I'd get up and muscle back the okay brand, waiting for the day i could grind up some Peerless. +10 stars for the Colombian Supremo. It is the best cup of coffee I have ever had. Period. I haven't tried any other coffee they offer because after just one cup of the Colombian, I saw no reason to. The coffee just tastes like coffee should. Its not mellow and soft, but its not overly intense and flavored with this month's bullshit marketing copy like, "Swiss Almond Chocolate roast" "French Poppy Field Meadow Bean" "Zen Grind, with Hints of the Dalai Lama's Gooch Sweat" Its just good coffee. read more

I've actually been here several times since my last review. I've had espresso, joe, lattes, in all flavors and various times of the day. I've bought and come home bearing roasted beans. The coffee is consistently wonderful as with the workers and all of those that serve. Even though it seems to be kind of out of the way, they get more foot traffic than first appears. This is surprisingly delightful because unlike the social scene that Starbucks or even Peets evokes, they are able to create a draw (following) without that overkill. I met the owner's wife, and she is very sweet. If more people felt as proud of what they do, this world would be a much better place. The one reason I upped my previous review from 4 stars to 5 is exactly because of a profoundness in product, not the hype. read more

Peerless is great. From coffee to staff, everything is really fantastic and unpretentious. They brew a good cup and have tasty pastries. No prepared food, but I'm okay with coffee and a croissant on a Saturday morning. They are very dog friendly and put out a jar of treats for all the doggy visitors. If you are a fan of drip coffee and not always in the mood for, "fancy caffeine" you should definitely try Peerless. The name really does say it all. The shop on Oak Street has a coffee stand that's open early morning, or you can go inside and buy it by the cup or the pound. It's strong and flavorful, and if you chose to buy it by the pound, there are some great flavors like cappuccino fudge and moka java. They also sell fair trade coffees. FYI, the shop is connected to the company's headquarters and there's a gift shop inside the store. The prices are extra reasonable, and if you are currently wasting money on that tasteless coffee Starbucks sells, you'll be pleasantly surprised. The best coffee ever! read more

This coffee is Italian roasted, resulting in a medium-dark roast with a full-bodied, round mouth feel, which is forward in the front while soft in the throat. We start with an award winning organic coffee from a farm perched high in the Sierra Madres in Chiapas, just a stones throw across the border of Guatemala. Looking at these beans, they are dark and oily and shout richness. Grinding your own keeps the coffee fresher. Buying the 5-pound size gives you a further discount. Update to review below (which still stands): 3 years on and I'm still coming back though not as often as I'd like now my work schedule has changed. So pleased that Rachel the barista is still serving at the morning coffee window and giving my cappuccino the TLC it deserves, seriously she rocks and cares so much about presenting Peerless coffee in the best way possible. Down the street Blue Bottle is twice the price, twice the wait and twice the attitude. But you know what, most of the time the foam is tepid and the espresso tastes no better (lets face it BB are really only known for their overpriced drip, if you want the most awesome espresso get Ritual). So as long as Peerless retain excellent baristas I'll keep coming back, happy to patronize a local business, but watch out - crappy service and poorly made drinks isn't something most coffee drinkers tolerate for long. Original review: I've lived in the Jack London District for years and years (13 as of writing) and tried every coffee place around. The new comers World Ground and Sierra Deli are closer to me and I have my own espresso machine but I now go almost exclusively to Peerless, why? Well Peerless are a coffee roaster - so they also sell beans including several fair trade types, they have an extra outside counter in the mornings before 10am for super fast brew - say hi to Rachel, she's awesome, a real coffee goddess. Most importantly their staff are well trained on how to make espresso drinks. As my friend says "they hand craft every one". Sierra Deli may use Illy Coffee (probably my favourite) but unfortunately their staff usually don't know how to make the machine do its thing. Not all the Peerless staff are great barristas but most know their stuff and care, and all are at least okay. But be aware that they do have quite a number of employees to run the inside shop and if there is employee turnover it can take a while for a new one to get up to speed. Elsewhere you'll be lucky to find one staff member who really cares about the coffee - a time consuming drink like a cappuccino can just be an irritation to them. IMHO the only better and more reliable source of espresso drinks in the area is Cafe 817 on Washington St (amazing cappuccino!). Peerless staff are friendly, happy, and a big bonus is their espresso drinks are the cheapest around - a double cappuccino is just $2.25 and if you get their loyalty card every tenth one is free, plus at least one month a year they seem to do a buy one get 50% off deal. Compare that with $3.50 or more elsewhere for an inferior brew. They also have regular promotions of other drinks (often lattes), and receipts usually have discounts on them too. Inside the store you can also buy all kinds of teas, yerba matte, coffee paraphernalia including some good quality machines like the Rancilio Silvia. They also sell peanuts, lots and lots of chocolate, cookies, candy, preserves and all kinds of cute gifts. Finally for those not walking to the store Peerless has more than ten dedicated customer parking spots! In an area where it is really hard to park during the day that is invaluable. Sure they don't serve food yet (if they opened a cafe they would clean up!) and the only seating is a few chairs outside but I still say they are the #1 coffee location in the area. read more

Yelp is full of morons. This coffee is the brown watery crap they serve at Motel 6, truck stops and prisons. If you have given this place more than three stars you should be banned from posting any reviews on Yelp. The staff is nice enough. The place looks cool and has great ambiance. Other than that, I would put McDonald's or 7-11 coffee up against this crap in a blind taste test any day of the week... Both are better. I only gave it 2 stars, instead of one, because if you must have coffee, no matter how crappy, they sell it. This place is awesome. The coffee here not only tastes better than most coffee shops, it's cheaper, too. Kira is usually the barista when I visit and she is so meticulous and detail-oriented with everything from making a latte to gift-wrapping a teapot. Wait time can be long when there are several customers ahead of you but you can kill time by looking at the myriad of coffee/tea products they sell. They also carry chocolate and candy that you normally wouldn't find elsewhere which tempts me every time but I'm trying not to be a fattie. Overall, a different take on your average coffee shop and a fun, unique experience, from the great customer service to the windows in the back of the shop so you can see the actual roasting (you won't get that at Starbucks!). So while I can't say much for a trendy crowd, or a quaint place to sit, Peerless' beans knock the others out of the park. The first time I experienced Peerless was at a restaurant in Modesto. I ordered a simple cup of coffee, and it utterly blew me away. I had to ask what kind it was. The waitress told me that it was made in Oakland. I was living in Berkeley at the time. I DREAM ABOUT THIS COFFEE. I started an internship at KTVU studios, nearby and the coffee makers there were, well, disgusting. But for a long day, I needed something to keep me going. From the outside, it's hard to tell that the inside is like a menagerie of coffee. The staff is amazingly helpful and friendly. And they have all kinds of coffee and tea you can think of. The coffee there makes all others seem like mud water. While they have some tables to sit outside, it's in a very industrial area, not a place where you can take your coffee out the doors and enjoy a nice scenery. It's very much catered to a coffee on-the-go objective. In fact, they even have an espresso bar you can just walk up to. I love that it's local, has been around for decades and is family run. I was leaning toward coffee snob, until prices drove me to a less radical position. With how much coffee I drink, I'm just now realizing that I can't afford high-end. In fact, I'm not quite sure I can taste a real difference. I do know that 'triple-certified' coffees doesn't necessarily guarantee a good cup of coffee. Now, I'm on the lookout for cheap and tasty coffee. Peerless Coffee is just about all I need. They've got lots of options; I tried the Tanzania Peaberry and could detect hints of berry. The Ethiopian Moka I'm drinking is delicious. I say good riddance to expensive coffees, and I'd say I just saved myself some money.. Long line at this location.
