A friend and I enjoyed a long lunch at Peg's Countryside Cafe on the first day of autumn. We chose the outdoor seating and their special of the day: Baked Chicken. It included two pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, and a popover. The food was tasty and plentiful and the price was good too. The potatoes included the skins- yum. Loved the popover. Peg's Countryside Cafe is the place to go for breakfast in the Hamel/Medina/Plymouth/Corcoran area. The bright yellow building on the side of Highway 55 is hard to miss, probably not because of its size, but because of parking lot full of cars. Countryside is a tiny restaurant that is never empty. The home-style cooking and friendly staff make this a great place for breakfast or lunch. The decor of the restaurant also makes for a fun place to eat. The walls are lined with pictures of customers and celebrities who have stopped in to enjoy a bite to eat at Peg's. The prices are reasonable and service is very fast. My wife and I are from the Seattle area, but visit Minneapolis off and on because of relatives. Whenever we're here we make it a point to get to Peg's for breakfast. Great place, great food, great people. Always welcoming, no stress, always have had good meals and we have tried most of the breakfast items on the menu at some point or another. It's like traveling back to the 1950's for breakfast. Old-fashioned, tiny place, bazillions of photos of previous visitors on the walls, with a family-run feel to it. Packed pretty much anytime--expect to wait a bit if you arrive at peak breakfast times--but service is fast and friendly. Great local experience and menu. But, you'd better arrive within ten minutes of the doors opening or the wait will be very uncomfortable. There's no where to stand and wait, the limited space is packed tight for dining. I don't blame the owners, it's a great joint and experience. Coffee was not great, but it was drinkable. Otherwise, the service was very good and food was good. They made a veggie substitution for me on the eggs benedict which I really liked. They gave my son a fancy hot chocolate and pancake. The staff was very kind to him and us, which I appreciate because its sometimes difficult to eat out with a squirrly kid. Out of all of the breakfast options near me, they are best. It might be my new go-to. I would definitely pay more for better coffee though. read more

This place was a fun experience for our family. I felt the food was a 3 - nothing special but not bad. If it's all about the food head over to OPH. However- the atmosphere, experience and value are a 5! They don't make them like this anymore. It's very similar to southern country roadside cafes. Think Cracker Barrel only without the generic mass produced feel. This is the real deal where you are seated so close to your neighbors your forced to talk to them and in many cases are sharing a table. Some may not like that but I think I'm our cell phone / Facebook world it's great to connect face to face with strangers. As for the value - the same amount of food at OPH cost our family of 4 twice as much. So Pegs is a great value! read more

Just great. Five stars for what it is and if there is a better country café/diner I would love to know what it is. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and fast and efficient. My wife and I went there for breakfast which is, mind you, not rocket science. But the eggs were cooked perfectly, the ham was delicious and the hash was outstanding. My only complaint is that the sausage gravy could've used a little more seasoning but now we're just nitpicking. Great, fun, unique place. Peg's is a classic and needs no praise from me but I did revisit Peg's delicious food a couple times via delivery this past week so I'm gonna give praise anyways. Still one of the best breakfasts on the west side. Good Day Cafe was our pre-covid breakfast spot for many years and they are great but I would put Peg's up there at the same level and in some ways better. Peg's has the same nod towards Latin flavors and I have to say I prefer Peg's chorizo to GDC's. Better hash browns too, IMO, buttery and not over-browned. I usually stick to home fries at GDC because their hash browns are somewhat unsatisfying even though I generally prefer the latter. I haven't tried Peg's cakes but another family member gave them thumbs up. Peg's just seem to do everything right while other places do many things right but have some quirks. The place is cozy and there is no bar but I'm not sure those are even negatives. Thinking back on the times I dined in the staff was always friendly and I don't remember the wait ever being too long. We eat here quite a lot! From the full turkey dinner plate every Thursday to the breakfast omelets, and lunch sandwiches. You can't go wrong eating here! A dinosaur in modern times. These kinds of restaurants are scattered in small towns across the USA. They survive because the owners are usually locals, the staff is also usually, local - and they actually smile when they greet you. The trick is to find them. I found Peg's more than 30 years ago. It has been my go-to place for comfort food. Sorry, no beer or wine. And no piped in music. From the walls filled with photographs of Peg's customers since she bought the place in 1975, to the regulars that occupy the same seats when they are available, to the staff that really are glad to see you, the place is a hotbed of local news from one table to another. Groups of people socialize, meet family members from out of town, and most don't mind if a complete stranger asks if he can share the table with them on a busy weekend morning. Peg, always the matchmaker, brings customers over to tables with one or more available seats, introduces the standee by name to the settees and leaves them to work things out socially. There are some 3rd generation families with children bringing their newest babies to the restaurant for Peg's special kind of attention. The menu items are prepared by a talented staff on the cooking battery. From week to week a new menu item is offered that is the brainchild of at least one of the cooks. It has to pass muster with Peg, of course. Then the wait-staff tests it. Sometimes it is on the menu for a 2 week trial. Naturally, some are winners with kitchen staff but not with the paying customers. Better luck next time. Breakfast on weekends is a test of versatility for the front and kitchen staff. Moving tables together for the family gathering of 11 or 12 tests versatility in a place that seats just 55. The food comes off the 6 foot griddle, waffle iron, oven or deep fryer with military precision and the customers get served quickly and efficiently. First gear wait-staff learn to shift into a higher gear quickly. Mention to a friend you have been to Countryside Cafe and the next thing you know, one person has stated his favorite dish while the other awaits his turn. A fun place to visit for a truly small town America experience; without taking out a home equity loan for that experience. read more

Peg's is a great place to stop for a home-cooked breakfast. Prices are fantastic. Servers are always super-busy on weekend mornings, but they are extremely nice and work hard. The restaurant is SMALL and you are packed in, but it's worth it if you want good food. (Not a place to linger over long cups of coffee). They serve a country breakfast sausage (large) link that is made at a local butcher - yum, with a bit of spice to it. Another option is the blueberry wild rice breakfast sausage - also great. read more

Amazing! Peg is so sweet and is always in the Cafe! So refreshing to see a business owner always throwing everything into her business, but even more into her customers. She never rests and has a keen eye for making sure things are as they should be and her customers are taken care of and happy.
