I'm surprised this restaurant has 4-stars. I used to go to Peking many many years ago before it was in the Short Pump area, and the last time I went to Peking was probably 7 or 8 years ago. It sure isn't the good food I remembered. I believe the original was on Grove where EAT Partner's Beijing on Grove is now located. I stopped in for a take-out order. I ordered Gen Tso's Chicken, hot and sour soup, fried rice, pork lo mein and a shrimp spring roll. The General Tso's chicken was awful. The chicken was a mushy clump of cubed, fried chicken. The chicken was no longer crisp (I've brought home or had delivered Gen Tso's and Orange Chicken in which the batter was still crisp, so no excuse for this when I was only about 3 miles from home). The chicken was swimming in a thick, overly sweet sauce that had WAY too much cornstarch. The fried rice *looked* like it would be good, but I have a feeling the dark color was mostly from dark/black soy sauce which mostly gives color to a dish. The rice was literally tasteless. I had to add some low-sodium soy to give it some flavor. The pork lo mein was equally as tasteless as the fried rice. The slices of roast pork were so dry that without dipping it into some sauce (which looked like extra oil on the bottom of the container), it got stuck in my throat. I make my own roast pork for making my own egg rolls and it's a ton more flavorful than this was. The shrimp roll has some shrimp in it, though I couldn't really taste it. Biting into the spring roll released a bunch of oil onto the wrapper. Not very appetizing. The ONLY decent thing in the order was the hot and sour soup. It had a good balance of heat, and vinegar. I think I tasted some bamboo shoots, and there may have been some mushrooms, but really good hot & sour (like I've had in Chinatown in NY, San Francisco and Washington D.C.) has tree ear mushrooms (also known as black fungus), dried lily flowers, and other ingredients that I didn't see or taste in this soup. But it was NOT too thick which was great as some restaurants use too much cornstarch. This was a lunch combo (Gen Tso, fried rice, hot and sour soup) and the lo mein and shrimp roll was separate. All in all, the total was just over $24 and definitely not worth it. I can't see going back to this restaurant again. read more

I came here for a lunch takeout during the weeekday. I got the general tso chicken ($12) with fried rice and egg drop soup. This lunch special provided a lot of food and some good food. The egg drop soup was very good! Fried rice was solid and the general tso chicken had a good fried coating and the sauce was just right! Fantastic value and great food during lunch! Okay let me admit first I was wrong. Having eaten at another location of this restaurant years ago and being very underwhelmed, I have never bothered coming into this location despite it being so close to my house. All I can say is my expectations were exceeded. Good food (loved the cheng du beef!) good soups (loved the flavor of the broth that went with the wonton soup!), great service. Very open dining room so you can have a nice visit and conversation. Definitely adding this to the rotation, especially for Sunday lunches, for which we always try to dine out. Absolutely Amazing. We went for an early Sunday meal and they didn't open up till 4:30pm. It was worth the wait and the drive. I'm allergic to MSG, like full face swell disfigured. Notice in the picture what's front and center on the menu... No MSG restaurant. Do you know how hard that is when you're craving Chinese. So how was the flavor? Outstanding! The Wonton Soup was some of the best I have ever had. I could have eaten several bowls and taken my entree to go. I ordered the Chicken Szechuan and the reviews don't lie. The portions are huge. I had the dinner special (soup, spring roll, rice, entree, fruit) and took enough home for the next day. The flavors were fresh and delicious but her is the second best part, it actually got better overnight! The flavors developed into amazingness. I wanted to like Peking Restaurant more than I did. After hearing about Peking Restaurant for months, I decided to finally step in and give it a try for dinner. The inside is nothing fancy and exactly what you imagine when thinking of a Chinese Restaurant from the late 90s or early 2000s. I ended up ordering the combo dinner platter which was both affordable and gave more than enough food for leftovers the next day on its own. The service was friendly and quick. All the proteins were cooked well, with the beef being tender and the duck having its fat appropriately rendered. However, all of this was salty which was only amplified by the salt in the fried rice which was very salty on its own. I ended up having leftovers the next day and had to make a large portion of white rice to balance things out before I could eat everything. read more

The velvet chicken tasted reheated. When the plate came, the food was only slightly warm and the sauce had spilled over into the other side of the plate. The cantaloupe looked like it had been cut and sat in the refrigerator for days. when I pointed this out to the waiter, the cantaloupe was replaced and the entree reheated. My group was at the Peking yesterday for a Christmas Eve gathering. We had picked another restaurant last year because Peking was just too popular. But the gang wanted to go back to a favorite, so we made a reservation. It was a delightful surprise to see the discreet changes the owner/manager had taken to guide staff and customers through the busy evening. To a few harried regular staffers, they had added a crew of energetic new faces, trained and eager to help. Some things were off the menu (no hot tea service), but that was okay; everything was done to keep the systems running smoothly. And the favorite dishes were prepared to expectation. Peking is one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Richmond and it is amazing. The decor is very traditional, the service is fabulous, and the food is authentic and tasty! Special shout-out to our waitress, Khristy, who went above and beyond to make sure that our experience was great. If she's in, definitely ask for her to serve you. Each lunch special is served with soup and rice - I highly recommend the egg drop soup. I don't know what they do differently here, but their egg drop soup is better than any I've ever had. For my dish, I ordered the Szechuan Three Delicacies, which has three types of meat and snow peas in a Szechuan sauce. I'm not great with spicy, so I asked if my dish could be mild, and it came out perfectly. We found Peking by accident one evening when we were looking to visit a nearby restaurant in the same parking lot that had closed before published closing hours. Glad we found Peking! And was glad to see they were open until 9pm. Each plate we ordered was delicious, a generous portion, and reasonably priced. Service was fast and friendly. 10 years later since coming to this location and his still not improved... bland food and worse of all they tried to hide thier screw up. Ordered Honey Walnut Shrimp and they screwed up by giving me shrimp with orange peel (tangy red sauce) and tossed in some walnuts... We would come here years ago to dine as it was such a great experience in Chinese cuisine. The white table cloths and drinking glasses always made Peking seem over the top to me. The food was always great and you paid for the quality! After many years we still crave the best Chinese in western Henrico (some are good but not great), late Thursday why not order from an old favorite! So the TikTok rave is Crab Rangoons, my daughter loves them so we order 2, an order of the Double Happiness (shrimp and chicken with a rich and tasty brown sauce), shrimp lo-mein, fried and white rice and a Shanghai roll (shrimp spring roll). The filling of the rangoons was amazing but the wonton was oily so they weren't crispy (just the edge's), the Double Happiness made me so very happy, huge shrimp , tender chicken with broccoli and carrots in a flavorful sauce. Both sides of rice were ok. The Shanghai roll was maybe two bites but my niece enjoyed it. The shrimp lo mein was very disappointing...blah. The noodles were definitely spaghetti noodles and the shrimp were ok. A few veggies but not what we were accustomed to (we love lo-mein). We have been ordering take out from here for years and have never been disappointed. We have actually ordered on Christmas Eve multiple times and always expect to wait a little bit but this year tops the cake! I called at noon on Christmas Eve and told them I wanted to place an order to be picked up at 6:15ish and she told me to call back at 5pm to place my order so that's what I did. The guy even said it would be an hour is that ok? I said yes and proceeded. I got there at 6:00 expecting to wait a bit but had no idea it would be 2.5 hours to get my food. Some people were waiting for 3 hours + Finally got our food and it was as usual pretty good but not worth this wait. The owners and staff had no idea how to handle this mess. Fantastic Chinese Food, Outdated Decor Well, this is it. One of the best Chinese restaurants in Richmond. This is yet another place I've been going to since I was a young kid, and while not every dining experience has been perfect, the food here is far from average. I love getting the General Tso's Fish here, and to my knowledge, I haven't seen it on any other Chinese restaurant menu. Additionally, the rotating tables with free tea and noodles with duck sauce completely sell the experience right from the get go. I can't think of a single dish I've tried here that doesn't knock it out of the park. The service is hilarious and attentive. I've never been to a Chinese restaurant with servers like the ones here! The only negative thing I can say about this is the outdated decor and furniture. Have the EVER updated the restaurant's interior? It legitimately looks just like it did when I was 5. It doesn't subtract from the other aspects of the restaurant (it's not THAT bad), but it takes away from the finer dining aspect the restaurant wants to have. Overall, I say you should absolutely go here. Just don't be thrown off by the decor, and you should have a great time. read more

I was lured here by the positive yelp reviews. I was a bit surprised to find the parking lot so full on a Sunday afternoon! Upon entering, some children were sprawled all over the entry way. I didn't really expect that. Anyway, we were seated promptly. The place was very busy due to the brunch buffet which seems to be very popular with the after church crowd! We weren't sure if we had an option to order from a menu since we were silently seated with no instructions. Someone brought water. Someone else brought tea and those fried crispy noodles. But no one brought menus or anything. I found someone to ask my questions to. I asked if it was possible to order from the menu and what the price of the buffet was. I was told that it was $11.25 and included a drink, soup, and ice cream sundae bar. The hubby ordered the buffet and I chose the pan fried dumplings app and Sa Cha Pork. I felt that the dumpling wrappers were so thick and chewy and the filling did not have any taste. I would not order the dumplings again. The Sa Cha Pork was quite tasty, not overly salty or greasy. However, the menu indicated that the dish was hot and spicy. Totally not hot and spicy at all. The egg drop soup was tasty and the hubs enjoyed his buffet food. The buffet had about 7 entrees, steamed rice, fruit, etc. We enjoyed the ice cream bar. The ice cream was pre scooped and you serve yourself the toppings of your choice. There was coconut, chopped nuts, chocolate sauce, strawberries, m&ms, sprinkles, whip cream, etc. Our server was very friendly and attentive. She kept our drinks topped off and made sure everything was alright. Well, I guess I can cross Peking off of my "Restaurants To Try" list. Been there. Done that. Nothing amazing. DH and I have not really found outstanding Chinese food since moving to Richmond. We happened to be in the area and decided to give Peking a try. We are very glad we did. They have a rather large menu with the usual and not-so-usual things you come to expect. They also have combo meals for $12 - soup, egg roll, fruit, entree and your choice of rice. I cannot remember what DH ordered (he liked it). I ordered the Chengdu Beef, which I really liked. DH really really liked and kept eating it off my plate (even after finishing his meal). The service was great, portions hearty and prices meant our meal was a very good value. We will make our way over to Peking again. read more

Kid you not - 23 minutes from my call the delivery guy is knocking on my door. Best delivery experience and speed ever.
